===== MDJ Script/ Top Stories for January 23rd Publish Date:  January 23rd    Commercial: From the BG AD Group Studio, Welcome to the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast.    Today is Friday, January 23rd and Happy Birthday to Earl Falconer I’m Keith Ippolito and here are the stories Cobb is talking about, presented by Times Journal KSU students rally on campus to protest ICE, deportations and detentions National Weather Service: Potential ‘major winter storm’ incoming this weekend Cobb victim advocate appointed to State Parole Board Plus, Leah McGrath from Ingles Markets on breads All of this and more is coming up on the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast, and if you are looking for community news, we encourage you to listen and subscribe!  BREAK: INGLES 8 STORY 1: KSU students rally on campus to protest ICE, deportations and detentions  Hundreds of Kennesaw State students walked out of class Tuesday, joining a nationwide protest against ICE on the anniversary of Donald Trump’s second inauguration. The “Free America” walkout, organized by Students for Socialism at KSU, called for justice for those detained, deported, or killed by ICE—like Renee Nicole Good, who was fatally shot by an ICE agent in Minneapolis earlier this month. Students gathered on the campus green, holding signs and chanting, “Justice for Renee” and “The people united will never be defeated.” Some marched around the student center, megaphones in hand, their voices echoing across campus. Grace Blomberg, one of the organizers, said the walkout was about solidarity. “We have a responsibility to stand with our immigrant brothers and sisters and with students in Minneapolis who’ve been striking for days,” she said. Not everyone agreed. Andre Stafford, chair of the Cobb Young Republicans, called the protests “misinformed” and said, “At the end of the day, it’s about law and order.” STORY 2: National Weather Service: Potential ‘major winter storm’ incoming this weekend  Winter’s about to make its presence known in Georgia, and the National Weather Service is urging everyone to stay alert. A major winter storm is brewing, set to hit the eastern U.S. this weekend, but where it’ll hit hardest? Still up in the air. Meteorologist Sam Marlow explained the storm’s setup: Arctic air surging south meets warm, moisture-packed air from the Gulf and Pacific. Somewhere along a line from the Carolinas to Texas, they’ll collide—bringing snow, freezing rain, and chaos. For Cobb County, expect a messy mix. Rain and snow showers could start early Saturday, with temps hovering around 40. By nightfall, it’s all but guaranteed—precipitation, freezing rain, and lows dipping to 26. Sunday? More of the same, with highs near 36 and lows plummeting to 19. And once the storm’s gone? Bitter cold sticks around. The advice? Be ready. Stock up on groceries, cover outdoor pipes, and pack an emergency kit for your car. If roads get bad, stay put—it helps crews clear them faster. For those without a warm place to stay, MUST Ministries is opening its winter warming shelter Saturday through Feb. 3. Located at 1297 Bells Ferry Road in Marietta, the shelter offers hot meals, beds, and breakfast. Guests should arrive by 8 p.m., and transportation is available through county transit vouchers. Stay safe, Georgia. STORY 3: Cobb victim advocate appointed to State Parole Board  Kimberly McCoy, a veteran in victim advocacy from Cobb County, has been appointed to the Georgia State Board of Pardons and Paroles by Gov. Brian Kemp. She steps into the role left by Meg Heap, who departed in August to become U.S. attorney for Georgia’s Southern District. McCoy’s resume is stacked. She co-founded the Cobb Family Justice Center, served 25 years as director of the Cobb DA’s Victim Witness Unit, and holds degrees in criminal justice and public administration. But her new role hasn’t been without controversy. Attorneys for death row inmate Stacey Humphreys, convicted of killing two Cobb real estate agents, argued McCoy’s past work with victims’ families creates a conflict of interest in his clemency case. Though McCoy planned to abstain from voting, a judge ruled her involvement could still unfairly sway the outcome. Humphreys’ execution, originally set for Dec. 17, has been delayed until a full, impartial clemency hearing can take place. McCoy’s appointment marks a new chapter in her career, but it’s already proving to be a challenging one. We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Call 770.799.6810 for more info.  We’ll be right back. Break: INGLES 8 STORY 4: Severe blood shortage: Give blood to Red Cross now  The American Red Cross is in desperate need of blood donors—like, now. Winter always strains the blood supply, but this year? It’s critical. Patients can’t afford delays in lifesaving care, so if you’re eligible, roll up your sleeve and help. As a thank-you, donors through Jan. 25 are entered to win a trip to Super Bowl LX in California. From Jan. 26 to Feb. 28, you’ll snag a $20 e-gift card. Local drives are happening all over Cobb County—Marietta, Kennesaw, Smyrna, and more. Check RedCrossBlood.org for dates and locations. And remember: your donation could literally save a life. STORY 5: F BRAVES: Carlos Beltrán and Andruw Jones are headed to Cooperstown, two center fielders who dominated their eras with a mix of power, speed, and jaw-dropping defense. Born just a day apart in April 1977, they’ll now share the stage at the Hall of Fame induction on July 26. Beltrán, in his fourth year on the ballot, finally crossed the 75% threshold, earning 84.2% of the vote. Jones, in his ninth year, got 78.4%. Both had to climb uphill—Beltrán’s path clouded by the Astros’ sign-stealing scandal, Jones’ by a slow start in Hall voting (just 7.3% in 2018). Beltrán, a nine-time All-Star, hit .279 with 435 homers and 1,587 RBIs over 20 seasons. He was a postseason monster, batting .307 with 16 homers in 65 playoff games. “The Mets are a big part of my identity,” he said, though his career spanned stints with Kansas City, Houston, St. Louis, and others. Jones, meanwhile, was a defensive wizard, winning 10 Gold Gloves and smashing 434 homers. He’s now the sixth Braves legend from their 1990s dynasty to make the Hall, joining Maddux, Glavine, Smoltz, Chipper, and McGriff. I'm Keith Ippolito and that’s your MDJ Sports Minute. And now here is Leah McGrath from Ingles Markets on breads We’ll have closing comments after this. The new national subsidies have made first-tier energy-efficient products the mainstream for consumers," said Liu Meichen, a store manager at Suning Max Beijing.苏宁易购北京店长刘美辰表示:“我们看到顾客对以旧换新政策的热情响应。新的国家补贴政策使一级能效产品成为消费主流。”For consumers, the trade-in policy is about more than just discounts. It provides them the opportunity to purchase cutting-edge smart appliances at more affordable prices. Products like AI-powered refrigerators, smart washing machines, and energy-efficient air conditioners are now in high demand. Over 70 percent of consumers are also prioritizing health-related features, such as self-cleaning or odor-removal functions while buying appliances.对消费者而言,以旧换新政策不仅关乎折扣优惠,更让他们有机会以更实惠的价格购入尖端智能家电。如今,人工智能冰箱、智能洗衣机和节能空调等产品需求旺盛。超过70%的消费者在选购家电时,优先考虑健康相关功能,例如自清洁或除臭功能。In the 3C sector, sales of smartphones and smartwatches rose 170 percent and 115 percent, respectively, reflecting the growing popularity of tech bundles, according to Suning.com.苏宁易购数据显示,在3C领域,智能手机和智能手表的销售额分别增长170%和115%,反映出科技产品组合的日益普及。"The smartwatch is a great tool for health tracking, and with the subsidies, it's good value," said Li Shunying, a Beijing resident who runs 2-3 times a week.每周跑步2-3次的北京居民李顺英(音译)表示:“智能手表是追踪健康的绝佳工具,加上补贴后性价比很高。”The policy's focus on green and smart technology is expected to reshape the market over the long term. From Jan 2024. Dive into the provocative world of artistic "theft" as Ty and Nathan explore how creative innovation truly emerges from our influences. This conversation challenges the myth of pure originality, arguing instead that the greatest artists throughout history have been masterful collectors and transformers of ideas.Beginning with Japanese fashion designer Yohji Yamamoto's transformative quote—"Start copying what you love... at the end of the copy you will find yourself"—the duo examines how creative development flourishes through strategic borrowing. From Quentin Tarantino's open acknowledgment of film references to David Bowie's musical influences, the most distinctive voices often emerge from those who've absorbed the most diverse inspirations. They unpack wisdom from creative legends including Jim Jarmusch, Paul Schrader, and Jean-Luc Godard, who all emphasize that true originality lies not in where you take ideas from, but where you take them to. Art movements throughout history—from Impressionism to Abstract Expressionism—evolved through artists stealing ideas from each other while working side by side, proving that innovation rarely emerges in isolation. What distinguishes mere imitation from transformative theft? When does copying become finding your voice? The conversation offers practical advice for artists at every stage: diversify your influences, document what moves you and why, maintain an "omnivorous" approach to inspiration, and create systems to capture ideas when they strike. Ultimately, the episode makes a compelling case that the most authentic artistic expression comes not from avoiding influence, but from embracing it wholeheartedly.Follow us on Instagram @ty_nathan_clark and @nathanturborg to continue exploring how creative influences shape artistic development.Send us a message - we would love to hear from you!Make sure to follow us on Instagram here:@justmakeartpodcast @tynathanclark @nathanterborg

On Friday, US president-elect Donald Trump asked the US Supreme Court to pause the potential TikTok ban from going into effect, until his administration takes office and can pursue a "political resolution" to the issue.12月27日,美国当选总统唐纳德·特朗普要求美国最高法院暂停执行TikTok潜在禁令,直至其政府上任并通过“政治手段”解决此问题。There are voices claiming that Trump is rendering assistance to TikTok because it helped him harvest support from young voters during his run for the presidency. But US President Joe Biden registered a TikTok account in February, about four months earlier than Trump, while Vice-President Kamala Harris registered her account before she became the presidential nominee. Actually, Trump actively pushed for a TikTok ban in his last term from 2016 to 2020. TikTok。TikTok is just a platform, and what really matters is that TikTok has already become part of the daily life and an essential channel of expression for more than 170 million US users and any attempt to ban it risks violating their constitutional freedom of speech. Data show that since 2020, TikTok's quarterly download volume in the United States has surpassed that of native social media apps such as X(formerly Twitter), You-Tube, Facebook, Instagram, and Snapchat. According to Statista, by April, or the time Biden signed a "ban or sell" act targeting it, its number of monthly active users had already exceeded 1.58 billion around the world, making it the fifth most popular social app. In a statement, TikTok also pointed out that if the "ban or sell" order is not frozen, within a month small businesses on TikTok would lose over $1 billion in revenue. That loss is the real challenge to US national security as it might push higher the unemployment rate that's closely associated with crime and social disorder. Another blow the TikTok ban will deal is to the credibility of the US government. TikTok is fully registered in accordance with US laws, operates legally and compliantly, and is subject to US regulatory oversight. By trying to suppress a legal company with political power, the US government makes itself and its written laws untrustworthy. This is particularly ironic for a country that claims "free speech" and a free-market economy. Jan 19 will be the deadline for the "sell or ban" order. It's also going to be the last day of the Biden administration. From Jan 20, the Trump administration will face all the problems of the US. By trying to pause the order, it has made a rational move to protect the US' long-term interests.1月19日是“不卖就禁”令的截止期限,也是拜登政府执政的最后一天。 oversightn.

Dr. Al Grauer hosts. Dr. Albert D. Grauer ( @Nmcanopus ) is an observational asteroid hunting astronomer. Dr. Grauer retired from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock in 2006.  From Jan 27 & Feb 3, 2023. travelersinthenight.org Today's 2 topics: - As asteroid hunters equipment and skills continue to improve we will be able to find and track some of these tiny impactors and perhaps be able to suggest where to find pieces of one of them on the ground. - On Halloween night while observing with the Catalina Sky Survey's 60 inch telescope on Mt. Lemmon, Arizona I discovered 21 space rocks streaking through the night sky. The most interesting one could be the destination of asteroid miners.   We've added a new way to donate to 365 Days of Astronomy to support editing, hosting, and production costs.  Just visit: https://www.patreon.com/365DaysOfAstronomy and donate as much as you can! (Begin episode transcript) Hi Friends, I'm Scott. This is What a Weird Week: Ten Weird Things from this Week's News. For transcript/ shownotes/ podcast stuff see www.shownotes.page! Here's Season 5, Episode 17 first published on Friday April 26th 2024... Nine Nines Revisited!! In this episode we check in on 9 former stories to see how they're holding up... ❿ Dog story (From Jan 12th) A couple of scary dogs caused $350,000 damage at a car dealership in Houston. And there's video. The dogs have been arrested and are being detained at an animal shelter. They scratched the paint and tore bumpers off cars. They went HAM on these automobiles. But why? They think cats were hiding under the cars and the dogs got all fired up and took it out on the poor vehicles. https://abc13.com/dogs-tear-apart-cars-g-motors-cypress-tx-barc-houston-stray-canines/14262071/ *UPDATE: Those dogs have yet to sign any deals for Influencer Boxing or as Junkyard Spokescanines, or any number of possibilities... Snickers Bar for Dogs? "We're not ourselves when we're hungry." *Does it hold up? This story holds as a weird one. Also, it keeps happening! It happened again last month in Florida. https://nypost.com/2024/03/30/us-news/dogs-cause-3000-in-damage-to-car-trying-to-get-to-cat/ ❾ A New Approach to stop floods... get bent! (From Jan 19th) This is an article out of the UK from Sky News about how some rivers have gotten "canalised" over the years ("canalised" = "straightened out like a canal"). Now they're gonna try to bend those rivers again and if the researchers are right, when we bend it like Beckham our rivers might be less likely to flood. Or... you're able to control where it happens, maybe is more accurate... It's about slowing the water flow just like a bendy road slows down traffic. (Looking at you, Lombard St. San Francisco.) https://news.sky.com/story/could-making-rivers-bendy-again-help-prevent-flooding-13047000 *UPDATE: Other than a report on how costly flood prep is, there has been little followup on this. *Does it hold up? Yes. Yes it does. Flooding remains a problem to be solved. Or we can all live in an ark. ❽ Chinese marathoner disqualified for chain smoking through the entire race... (From Jan 26th) - the fellow's name is Uncle Chen... he is 52... he finished the race in 3hrs and 33mins! (winner's time was 2:06:46). - this was at the Xiamen Marathon... tens of thousands of runners take part in this... - official ruling was disqualification smoking on the track. https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-12979881/chinese-marathon-runner-uncle-chen-smoking-brother-disqualified.html *UPDATE: Weeks after that report, Uncle Chen was banned from competing at the same marathon for two years. *Does it hold up? 10/10 it holds up! In a world where people run marathons dressed like bananas, etc., Uncle Chen continues to get be talked about in running circles. This article from Run Society goes deep into the sport psychology of Uncle Chen... https://www.runsociety.com/races/chain-smoking-marathoner/ ❼ Super Swiftie breaks world record... (From Feb 2nd) This is a fellow in Pakistan... 20 year old fellow... who was able to break the record for the most Taylor Swift songs identified from their lyrics in one minute. The world record is now 34 Taylor Swift songs. Maybe you want to try to break that record this weekend. So it's quite straightforward. You have to listen to the lyrics, identify the songs. No peeking... wear a blindfold. It looks like it takes intense concentration. https://www.guinnessworldrecords.com/news/2024/1/worlds-number-one-swiftie-breaks-record-for-naming-taylor-swift-songs-763982 *UPDATE: A month ago Bilal posted a video on YouTube unboxing his plaque/certificate. *Does it hold up? 10/10 it holds up. That record will be tough to beat! ❻ (CHARACTER LIMIT!) for full show notes see https://www.scottyandtony.com/2024/04/what-weird-week-special-episode-nine.html or just remember WWW.Shownotes.Page --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/weirdweek/message

It's Thursday and we're talking about Ford's comments on BYD's strategic move to North America. We also cover the IRS' issuance of advanced tax credits as well as Apple fans returning their VisionPro headsets. China's electric vehicle giant, BYD, is reportedly making a strategic move by setting up a new EV factory in Mexico, aiming to turn it into an export hub for the U.S. market and worrying many in the industry. The company is conducting a feasibility study and negotiating with Mexican officials about the factory's location and other terms. This move is part of BYD's global expansion strategy, complementing its dominant presence in the Chinese market.Last month, Elon Musk said that Chinese automakers will "demolish" global rivals without trade barriers.A forthcoming report by the group Alliance for American Manufacturing says "The introduction of cheap Chinese autos… backed with the power and funding of the Chinese government… could end up being an extinction-level event for the U.S. auto sector."On Wednesday, Marin Gjaja, COO of Ford's EV unit, Model e, spoke about the ‘colossal strategic threat' of Chinese EVs:  “They are ahead of us in this technology… We look at that and say, ‘That's coming here eventually, so we'd better get fit now and better get going on EVs or we don't have a future as a company.'”The U.S. government has dished out $135 million in advance EV tax rebates since the start of this year, marking a significant shift in consumer electric vehicle tax credit processingPrior to 2024, EV credits were claimed on tax returns the following year. From Jan. 1, these can now be transferred to dealers at the sale time, reducing purchase prices. The IRS reported over 25,000 sale time reports, with 78% involving advance payment requests, totaling around $135 million paid to dealers.New EVs account for 17,500 of the advance payment requests, with used vehicles making up 2,000. Over 11,000 U.S. auto dealers are now registered for the program.Just weeks after its launch, a notable number of users are returning their $3,500 Apple Vision Pro headsets, citing discomfort and limited applicability. Most complaints are primarily about comfort issues like headaches and motion sickness due to the headset's design.Parker Ortolani from The Verge reported a burst blood vessel in his eye after using the headset, highlighting health concerns associated with its use.Apart from physical discomfort, users also cite the headset's limited productivity and entertainment applications as reasons for their dissatisfaction.Concerns around file compatibility and multitasking inefficiencies further dampen the user experience, as noted by Google's senior manager Carter Gibson.Hosts: Paul J Daly and Kyle MountsierGet the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/ Read our most recent email at: https://www.asotu.com/media/push-back-email ASOTU Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/automotivestateoftheunion

RBI released a discussion paper that said: We've let you good people live all this time with “free” payment systems, so should we allow banks to start charging now? Specifically for UPI, which has reached volumes of 10 lakh crore rupees per month? And should we charge merchants? Deepak's answer is a big NO. He firmly believes that the payments ecosystem (and the economy as a whole) will gain much more than any fees on UPI transactions will. As always, Deepak has a context to his argument and covers a wide range of nuances. Listen to this podcast to understand his view on different aspects of the UPI payments system, its evolution, and the ways in which it can drive innovation. Also, this podcast covers many different aspects than Deepak's earlier post on the same topic.  Show Quotes & Time stamps 02:00 - Deepak and Shray trade fascinating stories about payment systems before UPI. 07:00 - The interoperability of UPI is a game changer 10:30 - How much do we pay for other payment systems? “RBI spends 4,824 crores per year printing cash. None of that cost is borne by anybody except the government itself” 14:30 - The evolution of ATMs, Cheques, NEFT, RTGS, and the big role that RBI played in making these systems affordable for users. 21:30 - Has UPI always been free? Or has it also evolved over time to be free? “The government went to parliament and passed a resolution to make UPI free… That's the extent we went to keep this payment mechanism free” “1,00,000 Crore is now available to banks to make money by parking it RBI and earning interest…. This is because people want to keep money with banks to make UPI payments” 31:00 - How much does it actually cost to run the UPI payments system? “NPCI spends just ~680 crores per year maintaining the UPI infrastructure. Compare that against the float income that banks make on the additional 1 lac crore float” 34:00 - The argument that UPI is a toll road so you should charge for this "public infra" “Credit cards transact about 100k crore a month, debit cards 60k crore per month, ATM withdrawals are at 300k crore per month…. So even now, after all these years, credit + debit card transactions are not more than cash” 41:00 - If you don't let players charge for UPI, who will fund innovation? “Internet protocols were free and they disrupted the world through innovation” “Interestingly, in the payments ecosystem, all innovation has come from the regulator and not private players” 43:40 - Counter arguments from Deepak's Twitter on why UPI shouldn't be free. 44:00 - Google and PhonePe did all the handwork to make UPI popular. Now you're telling me I can't make money on it? “You're building a road and they tell you... you can never charge a toll. But you still keep building that road… that's the payment apps for you” 50:00 - Let's say that the biggest private players leave because you won't let them make a profit. The top 2 guys control ~75% of all transactions. What happens to the ecosystem now? 1:02:00 - Why regulators have enforced limits on incentives and fees? “Financial regulation is not like tech where if you're too big, rules change for you. Here, if you are too big, and you disturb the system, the regulator first makes you small and then beats you” 1:05:30 - Government responses to the UPI monetization paper were very harsh. Why so? “Hoarding cash is ok. Spending that cash on the economy creates a whole new economic system that's outside the view of the government. That's not ok” “From Jan 2020 to now, the total ATM withdrawals are flat. UPI has gone from 120k crore to 1000k crore. The fact that UPI transactions are free has reduced cash transactions” 1:09:30 - The number of UPI transactions has drastically increased. But, is that all? The UPI tech reached its full maturity? What do we have to look forward to wrt UPI? 1:14:00 - UPI as a credit check for lenders and a game-changer for quick small loans   There's a lot more interesting stuff ahead with UPI. We're just getting started!
