Earlier this week, some of the world's leading astrophysicists came together at The Royal Society to question the very nature of our Universe. Does the Lambda Cold Dark Matter model, which explains the evolution of the cosmos and the Big Bang, need a rethink? Dr Chris North, an astrophysicist from the University of Cardiff, joins us in the studio to explain what this model says, and why it might need to be changed. The last few weeks seem to have been a non-stop cycle of depressing climate stories, with floods in Pakistan, mass coral bleaching and last month being the hottest March ever recorded. It's perhaps no surprise that many people are anxious about the news. Vic Gill is joined by Prof Lorraine Whitmarsh, an environmental psychologist at the University of Bath, and Tom Rivett Carnac, an author, political strategist and co-host of the podcast Outrage + Optimism. Together they discuss climate anxiety, and how to stay engaged with the news without feeling overwhelmed. And with all this wet weather, how are our precious insects faring? It turns out, bumblebees might have a trick up their fuzzy sleeves when the ground gets flooded - at least according to a new experiment led by Sabrina Rondeau from the University of Ottawa. We also get bumblebee expert Dave Goulson on the line to tell us more about these charismatic insects. Then there is a new cannibal star, suspected of eating its own planets, and the detection of new "Galactic Streams" of stars that all formed together but have since spread out through the Galaxy. Finally, we move onto planet formation and the detection of ices in forming planetary systems. But where does all that planet-forming material come from originally? Haley Gomez and Cosimo Inserra tell us about a new object that's changing our view of where all the dust in the Universe originates.

In 2020 astronomers spotted an object slowly getting brighter, but it wasn't until 2021 tha they quite understood how unusual it was. In 2021, they studied it in more detail, and found that it was something we don't think has ever been seen before. It was also the most energetic single event ever witnessed. Going by the catchy name of AT2021lwx, or simply "lwx" to its friends, this month we learn more about it. Dr Phil Wiseman, from University of Southampton, and Dr Cosimo Inserra, from Cardiff University, explain more. Elsewhere in the news, Chris North and Edward Gomez discuss how the JUICE mission has been jolting one of its antennas, the retirement of NASA's long-serving astronaut Peggy Whitson, and of course more from JWST.

A news roundup of the last couple of months with Chris North and Edward Gomez. With a few failures - the SpaceX Starship launch, iSpace's moon landing and Virgin Galactic's bankruptcy, it might seem things are going wrong. But it's not all bad news - ESA's JUICE spacecraft has successfully launched on its way to Jupiter! Elsewhere in the Solar System, archives of data from the Magellan mission to Venus have revealed further evidence of a volcanic activity on the hard-to-reach surface of Earth's evil twin planet. And there's Phaethon, the unusual asteroid that is the source of the Geminid meteor shower, and about which the mystery has deepened. Much further afield, there's new research on what leads to quasars, the energetic "burps" of galaxies as their central black holes gorge themselves on infalling gas. And finally, there's the mystery of the "impossible galaxies" seen in one of JWST's first ever images, which turn out to be, well, less impossible!

In the last month there was a show of the Northern Lights - or aurora - visible from the UK. If you didn't get to see it (spoiler: neither did we!), then you might get a chance in the future if there's another outburst. Edward Gomez and Chris North discuss how to increase your chances of seeing them next time there's an alert. In science news, some new thoughts on how the Moon could have formed, and an intriguing (and controversial) story about how balck holes might - possibly - be the answer to the mystery of dark energy. Chris also continues the conversation started in the last episode with Dr Ian Harrison and Dr Bob Watson about observing the cosmic microwave background. This time we discuss the advantages and challenges of launching in to space, and the problems caused by increasing numbers of satellites. There's also a new observatory being built in Chile - the Simons Observatory - which will present a huge leap forward in ground-based observations of the early Universe.

Chris North was born in 1948 and moved to East Anglia at a young age.  While working at a holiday camp as a photographer in 1966 Chris started watching the magicians who were performing shows for the children. He believed he could do a better job so started work on a semi-professional basis, initially performing for children but later doing shows for the adult audience too. In the early 1970s he was joined by assistant Lynn and, under the guidance of Anglia Agent Chic Applin, they worked the holiday centres of the East Coast performing their very slick illusion act, with good magic and lots of audience participation. In 1973 Jill Cullum replaced Lynn in the act and a year later they turned professional, and continued to work around the East Coast area.   Jill also had a local background, was born in Norwich in 1958, and before joining the act worked in a boutique and as a model. In December 1975 the duo appointed, Ipswich based, Barry Dye as their personal manager and began to pick up more bookings around the country. Their initial break came through the WheelTappers and Shunters Club, and a recording date for the show was all set when Chris and Jill were accepted to appear on New Faces. With the New Faces show recording scheduled before the forthcoming WheelTappers and Shunters Club, they were cleared to confirm both shows. The magic pair were runners-up on their New Faces show, in April 1976, with 114 marks out of 120, a fantastic achievement for a speciality act. When Pat Tansey, the New Faces show winner, was disqualified after it was revealed he had previously appeared on Opportunity Knocks, Chris and Jill were announced as the show winners and booked their place in the All Winners Final on 15 May 1976. Since then Chris has performed at a very high level supporting huge celebrities throughout the UK.  One thing that has defined Chris's career is his ability to adapt his act and change things up.  It's this skill that has not only kept him relevant but also kept him performing well into his 70's.

ON COACHING | Why does the topic of New Year's resolutions often elicit an eye roll? Maybe it feels cliché or maybe it's your personal history with it or maybe it's the national track record–an 80% failure rate by February. But what if we shifted our perspective around goal-setting from zeroing in on one particular outcome at one particular time of year to focusing on character growth and becoming a more committed being? A person who consistently follows through, sticks to their word, and has the power to make things happen in the world. Coaches Rosanna Tomiuk, Joseph Thompson, Randy Poon and Chris North turn the traditional idea of goal-setting upside-down, challenging listeners to rethink their approach as they discuss setting goals based on passion and inspiration, rather than on fixing problems; why engaged detachment is so effective; the trap of holding happiness hostage; and the benefit of community for accountability. Amanda shares insights from her various lenses over the years--single, married, divorced, before children, after children, and through lifestyle changes. She and the team detail three specific tools to use to set you and your family up for success during the holidays and beyond.2. Cultivating ConnectionWhy do we gather? For many of us, a desire for connectedness is at the root of the holiday tradition; yet meaningful connection sometimes gets overshadowed by a sense of burden and obligation. The group discusses this common disconnect and how to realign. Chris explores divisiveness, tension, curiosity, and why it is so beneficial to approach gatherings with a posture of "listening to understand, rather than speaking to be right."3. Grief + LossIt's natural to feel grief more deeply during the holidays, a time when we're expected to be happy. Johan, Dan and the team share personal stories about their own experiences with grief. They address different types of loss that people face--death, divorce, unemployment, the loss of an expectation ("Why don't I have a family yet?")--and how to create space for both sorrow and joy to coexist.Novus Global is a tribe of elite executive coaches who work with Fortune 500 Companies, Professional Athletes, World Renowned Artists and Business Leaders to create lives, teams and companies that go beyond high-performance.Book a free consultation with a Novus Global coach here: http://novus.global/now/ This podcast is produced by Rainbow Creative with Matthew Jones as Senior Producer and Jeremy Davidson as Editor and Audio engineer. The Discussion: In a month when the European Space Agency succeeded and failed in the first part of their Exomars saga, we go through the glory and the debris of Mars exploration, hanging out with astronauts Tim Peake and Tim Kopra, conducting exoplanet research, provide some advice about studying astrophysics and explain why the effects of dark matter aren’t witnessed in our own solar system. The News: Rounding up the space and astronomy news this month we have: Exomars, round one Another look at the Viking mission data that may have discovered Martian life Hubble discovers that the universe contains 10 times more galaxies than thought A philosophical discussion about the chances of life existing elsewhere Venus was habitable when life began to flourish on Earth Elon Musk’s plans for colonising the solar system The ethics of colonising other planets An update of NASA’s Juno mission at Jupiter And the latest taikonauts and astronauts. The Hat of Woo: Paul’s Hat of Woo is the repository for all festering and rancid conspiracy theories that have no basis in truth and yet persist in any dark and stinking corner of the internet. This month we pull one of the biggies out of the putrid hat: Evil aliens and a reptilian rival for the title of overlord. The Interview: This month we return to writer, broadcaster and researcher Dr Chris North from Cardiff University to answer a listener’s question on Chris’ interview in last month’s episode. Dr North mentioned that we can see Gravitational Waves to discover all sorts of information from these waves, such as size, distance & velocity, which I can understand (through Amplitude and frequency and rate of change of the signal), but how is it also possible to infer things like the spin and spin rate from the wave signal? (ignoring the question of how does a black hole spin if it has mass but no matter as Dr North mentions, and how do events happen inside a black hole since as you get closer to the event horizon doesn't time appear to us to slow down to us as an outside observer?) This month we take you through the delights of dark sky stargazing among friends, Jeni becomes a paid scientist and we get the reactions of the gang as we reveal signed movie poster mock ups that we’re emailing to listeners. The News: Rounding up the space and astronomy news this month we have: Gravity Spy – hunt for gravitational waves in this new citizen science project More details on NASA’s Asteroid Redirect Mission The first data from ESA’s Gaia spacecraft wows us all The Interview: This month we welcome back writer, broadcaster and researcher Dr Chris North from Cardiff University to discuss Gravitational Waves: what this means for the future of professional astronomy and what we can expect from this new field of astronomy in the future. Q&A: Listeners’ questions via email, Facebook & Twitter take us on a journey into the astronomy issues that have always plagued our understanding or stretched our credulity. This month we’re tackling a question about exoplanet detections with a back of the envelope calculation – and Jeni’s making Ralph do the maths. It’s fair to say, he’s not happy about it: A big hello from your Antipodean fan from Melbourne to all Martian superior beings in the UK (or something like that)… Whilst listening to your eagerly awaited last instalment of the show I was intrigued by Jeni's (who I believe has been to Australia…) exoplanet research. I am familiar with the concept of observing transits and teasing the dip of brightness out of the data flood. So far so good. That means that we, Earth and Mars of course have to be in the same plane in order to be able to get an observable transit. Is there any data or knowledge if there is a general orientation of planetary systems in relation to us or the galactic plane? Meaning if we know that can we extrapolate somehow how many planets are really out there as we obviously can only observe a fraction of the existing systems? Bit hard to explain but with your superior minds I am sure you will get the idea… :)? Clem Unger, Melbourne, Australia.

This month we talk National Astronomy Week and have an audio report from the outreach we conducted. In the news, we have a discussion with Jeni Millard and Sebastian Khan from Cardiff University about the discovery of gravitational waves; we discuss the auroral display that lit up Europe and the ensuing scandals caused by the Daily Mail; we have a possible way of detecting dark matter and a theory that dark matter may have killed the dinosaurs; a new minor planet emerges beyond the orbit of Pluto and a yet another minor planet is found to have its own ring system. In the 5 Minute Concept, Paul poetically explains the history and science behind that false dawn that plagued observers for centuries, the zodiacal light. We interview Dr Chris North, Astrophysicist at Cardiff University and presenter of the BBC's Sky at Night programme, about the detection of gravitational waves and what it means for wider cosmology. And in Q&A, we answer listeners' questions on Transient Lunar Phenomena and what happens on the boundary of a black hole.
