In 2003, Houston, Texas, an entire family was almost wiped out by a masked intruder who had broken into their home. It appeared to be burglary that had turned deadly – but evidence at the crime scene did not support this theory. A murder investigation was launched but, with few leads, police were baffled by the seemingly motiveless crime – until shocking evidence came to light suggesting the true perpetrator was someone much closer to home. This is what happens when a narcissistic, sociopathic son is prepared to do anything to get what he wants.  This is the case of Bart Whitaker.

Thomas Bartlett "Bart" Whitaker had a loving family that he threw away the night he plotted to have them murdered. While out having a celebratory dinner, no one in his family could've imagined the horror that waited for them when they got back home. This week, Savannah details how Bart hired a hitman to kill his family as soon as they set foot inside, how he was found out, and the miraculous survival of his father, Kent Whitaker. Incredibly, Kent has since forgiven his son for orchestrating the killing of his son Kevin Whitaker and wife Patricia Whitaker, and has even visited him regularly while he was on death row. And in another twist, mere minutes before Bart was set to executed, he got a call from the governor commuting his sentence instead to life in prison. So why did Bart kill the people he supposedly loved? All to cover up another web of lies. Love Killer Instincts but hate the ads? Which one of us may or may not have had a CIA-trained sharpshooting grandma? Are WE among Merie’s list of certain reputable podcasts? How is Becky going to end up like the Texas cheerleader murdering mom? Did Dwight Eisenhower accidentally create a dirty joke for Merie’s family? How will Merie know when it’s time for her to murder Becky? Can someone stop Becky from using the word “homegirl” ever again? (And is THAT why Merie may have to kill her?!) Does Becky really quote a Nike ad as encouragement for NOT murdering your family? Come for the professor and the professional college attender. Thomas Bartlett "Bart" Whitaker arranged with two friends to kill his parents and younger brother Kevin. The much-indulged son of a well-to-do family, he resented the fact that his cousins would inherit the family business. And he was tired of waiting for his "share". Knowing that his parents were heavily insured and that their assets were significant, he cold-bloodedly arranged for them to be murdered. To deflect suspicion away from himself, he instructed his henchmen to make the murders look like an interrupted burglary. He scheduled the murders on the night that the family was having a celebratory dinner at an expensive local restaurant. Believing that their son was soon to graduate from college, the proud parents presented him with a $4,000 watch to express their pride in him. When the family arrived home, all four were shot. The plan was for the parents and Kevin to die and for Bart to be slightly injured. But Bart's young friend wasn't a professional. He killed Tricia and Kevin Whitaker, but only wounded Kent Whitaker. Mistake #1. And the rifling of the house that was supposed to make it look like a burglary was poorly done, looking like the fake job it was. Mistake #2. When the police started looking suspiciously at Bart Whitaker he bolted for Mexico and hid out there until the man whom he had paid to get him there turned him into the police and collected the reward. Mistake #3. Three strikes and you're out, even with relatives as naive and gullible as the Whitaker/Bartlett family. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/burl-barer/support

Brandi starts us off with the story of Johnson County’s other serial killer. That’s right, folks. There’s more than one. In the late 80’s, young women in Johnson County apartment complexes had a good reason to be afraid. Three twenty-something’s vanished without a trace. Their apartments showed no signs of a break in. But there weren’t signs of murder, either. For a while, all anyone could go on was a sinking suspicion that something was terribly wrong. Then, to everyone else in Sugar Land, Texas, the Whitaker family seemed to have it all. But that all changed one winter night in 2003. The family went out to celebrate Bart Whitaker’s graduation from Sam Houston State University, and when they arrived back home, a masked gunman shot all four of the family members. Kevin died almost immediately. Trisha died in the hospital. Bart and his father Kent survived. They begged police to find the people responsible for the crime. But police didn’t have to look too far… And now for a note about our process. For each episode, Kristin reads a bunch of articles, then spits them back out in her very limited vocabulary. Brandi copies and pastes from the best sources on the web. And sometimes Wikipedia. (No shade, Wikipedia. We love you.) We owe a huge debt of gratitude to the real experts who covered these cases. In this episode, Kristin pulled from: The 48 hours episode, “Sugar Land: Life or Death” And a tad from “Thomas Bartlett Whitaker,” Wikipedia.com In this episode, Brandi pulled from: “Gone in an Instant” episode, On The Case With Paula Zahn “CRIME HISTORY: Serial Killer Richard Grissom — A Conviction Without Any Corpses” by Terri Osborne,http://crimefeed.com “Jurors Convict Grissom in Triple Murder, Eight Other Counts” by Richard D. It was a night of celebration for the Whitaker family. Their son Bart was graduating from college. But when Bart's brother Kevin opened the door to their house, a masked intruder shot him point blank. His mother took the next bullet, followed by Mr. Whitaker and Bart. Blood was everywhere, but somehow Bart and his father survived. To the cops the story didn't add up, and their investigation discovered a stunning web of lies. Bart was living a double life. He hadn't been enrolled in college since his freshman year. Instead of attending classes, he'd spent his days playing video games with his friends - while planning to murder his family to inherit their million-dollar estate. Savage Son takes us inside this chilling murder case to reveal the twisted motives of a seemingly All-American-Boy-Next Door who turned into a cold-blooded killer now residing on Death Row.
