The conversation underscores the enduring significance of the wartime experience in shaping Poland's national consciousness and its evolving relationship with its past. For Poles, the fact that that war began on the 1st of September 1939 is something that can't really be removed from public consciousness. They, the Poles, by definition, were there. Self-responsibility and compliance are important in interactions with police officers. Community support plays a significant role in shaping the perception and effectiveness of police departments. Find somebody to watch the kids while you giggle through today's poem. Happy reading.Respected editor, publisher, writer and poet, Paul Ruffin often relied upon his experiences growing up in the South as a foundation for his stories. He was born in Millport, Alabama, and grew up outside Columbus, Mississippi. After serving in the U.S. Army, Ruffin earned both his bachelor's and master's degrees in English at Mississippi State University. He took post-graduate courses at the University of Southampton in England and graduated with his doctoral degree from the Center for Writers and the University of Southern Mississippi in 1974. He accepted a position at Sam Houston State University where he founded The Texas Review—an international literary journal—and Texas Review Press, a member of the Texas A&M University Press Consortium.Karla K. Morton, 2010 Texas Poet Laureate, said, “His work at The Texas Review Press elevated the whole of Texas Letters.” Throughout the years, Ruffin worked tirelessly to promote the press and its authors, once giving his views on university presses moving toward digital books as opposed to traditional ink-on-paper.“We're fulfilling the ancient role of the university press and that is to produce books. I don't want to give up the book because it is an art,” he said.During his extensive writing career, he published more than 1,500 poems, 100-plus stories, and more than 90 essays in magazines and journals.  His work also has appeared in numerous anthologies and textbooks. In addition, he wrote a weekly column that appeared in several newspapers in Texas and Mississippi. In 2009, he was named Texas State Poet Laureate. In a 2009 article in SHSU's Heritage Magazine, Ruffin was described as someone who “loves football, shooting, riding his tractor, maintaining his truck, and doing his own carpentry, electric, and plumbing work…not exactly the stereotypical image of a person who loves words and is a master of arranging them into beautifully crafted poems and other literary works.” -bio via Sam Houston State University Get full access to The Daily Poem Podcast at dailypoempod.substack.com/subscribe

Although heartbroken about what that might mean for the kids she taught and loved, Kirsten knew if something didn't change, she wouldn't be able to continue to be the kind of teacher her students needed and deserved.Kirsten went on to write a children's book, “Sprinkle Your Sparkles” and also combined two of her passions to create Kirsten's Kaboodle - an online shop chock full of fun and effective resources for elementary educators.  Former Texas House Representative Glen Maxey was born near a refinery in Baytown, Texas, in 1952. His first job was working in a traveling rodeo and his first serious foray into politics was as a student at Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, where he led the charge to allow alcohol to be sold in that formerly dry county. Although he was already a known quantity in the Texas Democratic Party by his early 20s, it wasn't till he was almost 30 and left teaching 5th grade in rural Texas that he got his first job working at the Capitol. In 1981 after getting Kent Caperton elected to the State House, Glen was asked to join Representative Caperton's staff and immediately began cultivating a relationship with the most powerful senator in the state, Oscar Mauzy. The following year, Glen lost his own race for an open House seat in Bryan-College Station. He quit teaching and permanently relocated to Austin to join the staff of Sen. Mauzy. Glen lived an extremely closeted life as a gay man. But that ended in 1985, when, using the bull horn of Sen. Mauzy's office, he stood up against Texas's draconian response to the HIV crisis, and overnight became a very public gay rights activist and the first executive director of the Lesbian Gay Rights Lobby (LGRL). No one thought he had a real chance to win an election in Texas in the early 90s; his good friend Governor Ann Richards said, “Don't do it. Even if you win, they'll never let you do what's important.” Glen Maxey proved them all wrong becoming the first out gay man elected to the Texas State House in 1991 and over the next 12 years passing more impactful legislation than any legislator in Texas history.

The event is fully booked, but there is a standby policy that you can read about on the Landmarks James Turrell web page. Artist and PSO collaborator Mark Menjivar will join Paul and me and play processed field recordings sourced from the Texas Bird Sound Library, a treasure trove of recordings he discovered during his time as a visiting artist at Sam Houston State University. Included on the pod are randomly picked tunes from the PSO archive. Highlights include field recordings from the coast of Maine, in Bastrop State Park, and sounds from the porch from as far back as 2018. The pod ends with two pieces that feature collaborations with Gavin Watts of The Answers and the Reformers and John Hunt, a staple of the Austin music scene since his days in Silver Scooter, Fivehead, The Decade Show, and now plays in the band, the Bantom Woods. LinksPSO websitehttps://porchswingorchestra.org/Bandcamp https://porchswingorchestra.org/ BandcampNewsletter on Substack (FREE!) https://porchswingorchestra.substack.com/Track ListingAll recordings were made in Austin, Texas unless otherwise noted.(03:26) no.218 | Practice Makes Practice(09:11) no.83 | no.154 | Lost Pines, Bastrop State Park, September 30, 2021, Bastrop, Texas(012:30) no.114 | Pool Patch, October 7, 2020, Austin, Texas(15:32) no.24 | Bailey Island Revisited, August 26, 2018.  Welcome to Game Changers with Jeff Newkirk, where we speak with people who have done something to make this world a better place. It's simple: inspire, educate, and let's change this world!  On today's episode, Jeff welcomes guest Rebecca Smith Nash to discuss a troubling and sensitive subject: foster care. In the U.S. alone, there are 700,000 children in foster care. 80% of the children in foster care in Texas have some mental health need. Similarly, 80% of prison inmates grew up in foster care.  Rebecca has a wealth of experience as a counselor who also runs two organizations. She earned her Bachelor's degree at Southwest Texas University and her Master's at Sam Houston State University. While working on her PhD, she began her private practice and was working at Houston's Harris County Jail, the third largest county jail in America. She began working with kids in foster care as the foundation of her practice and fell into the unique niche of families involved in custody modification. Rebecca explains that custody modification occurs when children refuse to go to a specific parent's home. In her work, Rebecca has found that sorting out the parent's issues often solves the children's problems immediately. This goes to show that children are the products of their environment. Don't miss Rebecca's anecdote demonstrating the importance of parental emotional behavior on their children.  Then, Rebecca shares what drew her to her work in the foster care system. Since launching in 2021, her organization, Love Heals Youth, has exploded with support. Although COVID prevented the non-profit from talking off sooner, she shares the bright side of that frustrating time. It inspired Rebecca to digitize all her client files, which means she can serve her clients from anywhere and ensure that no one is left behind. Because many of her clients are young children in the foster care system who move around frequently, this newly digitized service allows for continuity in services no matter where they live. Their services are also 100% free. 60% of  Love Heals Youth's clientele are foster youth, and 40% are homeless. Although this topic can be weighty and sad, Rebecca does not miss the opportunity to share some of her most significant success stories. She sheds light on how helpful prayer has been for her personally and professionally to sort through emotions and encourage an internal dialogue. Before wrapping up, she shares some exciting upcoming events for Love Heals Youth. Finally, she reads her moving poem Love Heals Youth. Learn more about Love Heals Youth and get involved!  Learn more about Jeff Newkirk. Do you have any game-changers in your life?
