A top college Running Back for the University of Washington, Bishop Sankey discusses committing to the University of Washington after verbally committing to Washington State University. In this episode, Bishop talks about transitioning out of the NFL and gives advice on athlete transition from sports. He uses real-world examples for how to stay positive in the face of challenges and provides strategies to overcome obstacles. In particular, he shares with athletes how to stay positive and move forward when athletic careers are cut short. Finally, Bishop talks about life after the game and how to find joy in new opportunities. Bishop's story depicts resilience. In 2018, Bishop's NFL season was cut short when he suffered an ACL tear. The next season he competed in the Alliance of American Football, a start-up football league. The league went bankrupt before the end of the first season. On this week's RSP Cast, Rookie Scouting Portfolio creator Matt Waldman discusses 10 running backs from the 2019 NFL Draft class whose games beg the question: Is his game greater than the sum of his parts or less than? I finished the 2019 RSP running back chapter today. It was the most difficult RSP chapter that I’ve ever written. At first, I wondered if it was because I’ve moved twice in four months while doing the research. The quarterback chapter was work-intensive but not this difficult--so that wasn't it. What I’ve come to realize is that this running back class as a whole was the most difficult class I’ve ever evaluated. I’ve had difficult individual decisions that take time such as giving lower grades to players like Darren McFadden and Bishop Sankey when they were considered early-round feature backs. This is different for several reasons. When you break down positions into the buckets that I do and define them in detail and grade by that detail, you begin to realize that a player’s game has such a wide range of parts that can be combined in different ways of expression. Two players with the same grade can express that grade in vastly different ways. For instance, Justice Hill and Benny Snell have the same Depth of Talent Grade in the upcoming 2019 RSP. However, their games are vastly different. This is why NFL teams filter their evaluation of players at a position to a much smaller number than independent scouts. Each individual team evaluates far fewer players than what I study for the RSP. I were part of a team or working for a team, I’d be looking at 12-15 backs and they’d all be of similar skill sets. The other issue is the way this class of backs expresses their individual games. This class has a greater potential to be a minefield for NFL teams and fantasy players than any class I’ve ever studied. Many of the backs receiving positive buzz have the oddest combinations of parts that can comprise an individual's total game. Is their game greater than the sum of their parts or less than? This week, I discuss 10 running backs whose games merit that question. Find out who they are. For the most in-depth analysis of offensive skill players available (QB, RB, WR, and TE), get the 2019 Rookie Scouting Portfolio. Today I go Beyond the Surface with professional football player, Bishop Sankey. Bishop was drafted by the Tennessee Titans in the second round of the 2014 NFL Draft. Before the NFL, Bishop played collegiately at the University of Washington. He carried the ball 644 times for 3,496 yards (third-most in Huskies’ history) and scored 37 touchdowns on the ground, while also adding 567 yards and one more score on 67 receptions (8.46 ypc) and 134 yards on seven kickoff returns (19.14 avg) for a total of 4,197 all-purpose yards (110.45 ypg). In 2013, with a 200-yard game against Washington State in the Apple Cup, he finished the game and the regular season with 1,775 yards for the season, breaking Corey Dillon’s 1996 record of 1,695 yards. On the same play on which he passed Dillon, a seven-yard touchdown run in the third quarter, he also broke Napoleon Kaufman’s school career rushing touchdowns record, with his 35th. Last year Bishop was a member of the Kansas City Chiefs and New England Patriots and he is now on the Minnesota Vikings. Give Bishop a follow on Twitter @BishopSankey.
