But Tony's coaching transcends business; it's a journey to life transformation, where each session is a stroke that helps paint a new horizon. Tony's passion for change began with the inception of PureGame in 2009, a sports-based youth development nonprofit rooted in the firm belief that every child deserves to flourish. His program, Warriors of Change, ingeniously incorporates the elements of water and flow, mirroring the adaptability and fluidity required to navigate life's varied challenges. It's this unique methodology that sets Tony apart—a coach who sees beyond the scoreboard to the vast potential of the individual. In our conversation, Tony shares his own transition story, reflecting on his move from England to America, a time when he felt adrift yet eventually found his calling in youth coaching. His focus shifted from athletic performance to the development of character, social engagement, and mental health support for teens. Tony's reflections offer a window into his philosophy: It's not about the wins and losses but about fostering a positive environment where children can truly thrive. How is Dr. Daniel Zimet serving athletes in transition?Transitions, in sport as in life, can be very difficult, especially if you are not prepared for them. Some of the most challenging times in my life have been during major transitions. College. Marriage. Parenthood. Divorce. Unfortunately, I was short on the resources to manage these changes and it took a toll on my life.Perhaps, one of the most difficult transitions of all is when an elite athlete must exit their sport. Athletes are some of the most resilient people walking the earth, but yet are still human. After years and years of investment into the single most important thing in an athlete's life, sport is gone in a blink of an eye and it is nearly impossible to replicate that experience. The mental health impacts can be negative and sometimes tragic. My guest on this episode, Dr. Daniel Zimet, is a licensed psychologist and Certified Mental Performance Consultant®. Dan and colleagues in our field of sport psychology are conducting the Athlete Transition Study to better understand the experiences of retiring athletes on a large scale. In Episode 46, Dan discusses the inspiration for conducting the Athlete Transition Study and why its implications are so important to how we support retiring athletes. Further, Dan and I discuss the unique challenges of athletic identity and how sport psychology professionals help athletes keep things in perspective. So, what was your biggest takeaway from my conversation with Dr. Daniel Zimet? For me, it's that we must truly understand the elite athlete's transition experiences in order to serve them properly. Athletes lose a critical part of their identity when they retire and the potential long-term mental health consequences are significant. Investing in the Athlete Transition Study is a small price to pay for a potentially huge payoff. My suggestion to elite athletes and their loved ones is share your story. You are not alone. All athletes, elite and non-elite alike, can struggle after they leave sport. Without the proper support, the transition out of sport can be extremely difficult. Share your story with a friend or trusted professional.I want to thank Dan for his kind generosity and the wisdom he shared with The Freshman Foundation Community. You can learn more about the Athlete Transition Study on their website at https://athletetransitionstudy.com as well as on Instagram and Twitter @athletetransitionstudy.To learn HOW mental performance coaching can help your mind work FOR you rather than AGAINST you, visit https://michaelvhuber.com.Thank you for listening. In this episode, Bishop talks about transitioning out of the NFL and gives advice on athlete transition from sports. He uses real-world examples for how to stay positive in the face of challenges and provides strategies to overcome obstacles. In particular, he shares with athletes how to stay positive and move forward when athletic careers are cut short. Finally, Bishop talks about life after the game and how to find joy in new opportunities. Bishop's story depicts resilience. In 2018, Bishop's NFL season was cut short when he suffered an ACL tear. The next season he competed in the Alliance of American Football, a start-up football league. The league went bankrupt before the end of the first season. Bishop tells us how he approached the end of the Alliance of American Football. In 2020, he signed with the Toronto Argonauts of the Canadian Football League, and again had his season cut short because of COVID-19. Bishop tells listeners how they can recreate themselves and build new careers. In particular, he discusses life after the game of football and how athletes can build successful second careers. However, the benefits of flow state can easily be accessed outside of sports, and it will positively impact your life. We wanted to discuss Flow State on this episode to get you familiarized with the concept and its benefits! Key takeaways: Flow State can be tapped into through breath work, hyper focusing on the task at hand, tuning out, and learning to truly tune in. Flow state is typically accessed through movement, but it can be as easy as a yoga sequence flow to get there!Be safe when practicing getting into a flow state and always be aware of your surroundings (ie: please don't try to get in the zone while dodging traffic)Meditation and Flow State can increase productivity, longevity, and mental sharpness. The importance of being comfortable with failure. As athletes we tend to put a lot of pressure on ourselves to perform, and when you’re used to being the best and winning in your chosen sport, failure isn’t always something you experience. The idea that failure means losing or not reaching your goal is completely wrong. When we talk about failing, we’re talking about the first step to learning, growing, and evolving. When your sport ends, it can be difficult to find that team aspect again. Many athletes look towards club teams or group sports where they can meet new people, train together, play together, and be integrated into a different community. If you've ever asked yourself: Should I join a club team? Then this is the episode for you! For Don, he enjoyed aspects of club volleyball, rugby, basketball, and also joining a kickball league after he finished his collegiate career swimming at University of Texas. On the flip side, Brooke never felt compelled to join a league or club team after her running career ended at University of Iowa. The two discuss the ways in which joining a team again can be a good thing, whether it's the right choice for everyone, and what to look for if you are joining a team for the first time after ending your athletic career in your sport. Two years ago, The Sustainability Report featured an interview with this week's guest in which she described her first sustainability gig – voluntarily greening the Women's Field Hockey World Cup in England.Since then, Joie Leigh's career in sustainability has gone from strength to strength. She has successfully transitioned from elite sport to life as a sustainability professional with strategic firm Carbon Intelligence, with a stint implementing sustainability operations at the Netball World Cup in 2019 in between.During this episode, Leigh discusses her journey from elite hockey player – in which she was part of the successful Team GB women's field hockey team that won gold at Rio 2016 – to developing sustainability strategies in a number of sectors. She also talks about jumping in at the deep end and taking on the responsibility for the sustainability operations at the 2018 Women's Field Hockey World Cup and the 2019 Netball World Cup, both hosted in her home nation of England. Finally, Leigh explains how the athlete mindset can be adopted to take on sustainability challenges, and how the skills she learnt as a sportsperson helped her transition from the field to the office.“Although you're in an office, and the surroundings are very different, you find that the same things are important in terms of working as a team to enable businesses and sectors to become more environmentally aware. Having a team and goal is still prevalent.”
