Interestingly, many of these early pioneers weren't domestic recruits but foreign nationals.During the late 1800s, wealthy families and government officials from China and Japan often sent their children to the U.S. and Europe for education. These students brought back more than just engineering degrees; they brought back a love for American sports.The "Exchange Student" Athlete: Many of these students were natural athletes who joined football teams as walk-ons to better acculturate to American life.A Multi-Sport Legacy: Tim Brown highlights one standout at the University of Pennsylvania who was not only a varsity baseball player but also one of the top tennis players of his era before trying his hand at football.From the Islands to the Iron: Walter "Sneeze" AchiuWhile Asian players appeared on the East Coast as early as the late 1800s, it wasn't until the 1920s that we saw the first identified Pacific Islander make a mark. That man was Walter Achiu.Achiu's journey is a fascinating look at the "hidden" pipelines of early football. A standout at the St. Louis School (then St. Louis College) in Honolulu—a Catholic school that still produces NFL talent today—Achiu ended up playing for the University of Dayton.Why Dayton? It turns out both schools were run by the same Catholic order, creating a bridge from the tropical islands to the Ohio gridiron.The First API Star in the NFLAchiu was a dual-threat star, captaining the track team and playing halfback and quarterback. In 1927, he broke the ultimate barrier by joining the Dayton Triangles, making him the first Asian and Pacific Islander player in NFL history."His race was half of his football identity in the press. They'd call him 'The Chinese' or 'Native Islander'—it was a novelty to the media of the time, regardless of his actual skill on the field." — Tim BrownHis nickname, "Sneeze," reportedly came from his surname, Achiu (pronounced Ah-choo), which he told fans was "just like a sneeze" to help them remember it.A Legacy Beyond the GridironLike many players of the era, Achiu's athletic career didn't end with the NFL. He transitioned into professional wrestling, a career he maintained into the 1950s. Rick talks to Wisconsin Badger football legend, Montee Ball this week. After a record-breaking high school career, Ball had a stellar career for the Badgers. In 2011, Ball was named First-team All-American by Yahoo Sports. He was one of five finalists for the Heisman Trophy. He finished fourth in the voting, with 348 points (22-1st place, 83-2nd place and 116-3rd place points). Ball’s fourth-place finish was the highest in Wisconsin history for a non-winner of the award, until Wisconsin running back Melvin Gordon finished second behind Oregon Ducks quarterback Marcus Mariota in 2014. He was joined by teammate Russell Wilson, who also received votes. On January 2, 2012, Ball scored his 39th touchdown of the season, tying him with Barry Sanders for most touchdowns in a single FBS season. He finished the season with a NCAA-leading 1,923 rushing yards and 33 rushing touchdowns, while adding 24 receptions for 306 receiving yards and six touchdowns. In 2012, Ball scored three rushing touchdowns against Purdue, giving Ball a career total of 72 touchdowns. This broke the Big Ten record and the Wisconsin record of 71 held by former Badgers running back Ron Dayne. He also ran for a career-high of 247 yards against the Boilermakers. On November 24, 2012, Ball became the FBS career record holder for total touchdowns when he scored his 79th touchdown on a 17-yard run against Penn State. Ball won the Doak Walker Award, given to the nation’s top running back. Ball became the second Badger to win the award. Ron Dayne won the award in 1999. He was named as a Consensus All-American.
