I refer to a blog post I wrote last year that referenced Kristen Neff's research on self-compassion. That article is here and the reference is in the section called “Step Two: Flip the Script.”I'd also like to acknowledge some of the other wise teachers whose work has helped shape my ideas. They include Rev. angel Kyodo williams, Michael Meade, Bo Forbes, Robin Wall Kimmerer, Acharya Shunya, Mirabai Starr, Leonard Schlain, bell hooks, Brené Brown, Ibram X Kendi, Jason Reynolds, Liz Gilbert, Bessel van der Kolk, my own children and sisters and friends, and more. One way I'm trying to be less white supremacist in my thinking is to notice when I'm feeling like “I did this all myself!” and instead stop to recognize the many people whose voices and efforts have informed my own. I stand on the shoulders of many. Lifting oneself up by one's bootstraps is not possible nor advisable.

Listening to your body This month on the podcast we are talking about how to listen to your body. This is one of my favorite topics. I recently just finished reading Yoga for the Emotional Body by Bo Forbes. It validated what I feel is missing in the wellness space the idea of how to listen to your body and if it's truly possible. Listening to your body has been thought of lately as if it's something that cannot be done or that we shouldn't trust what we are feeling. I call BS. We have been told for many years that we don't know best and that others doctors, fitness professionals, yoga teachers, dentists, teachers, etc have the answers and we cannot trust what we discover about ourselves. Now I know all of those have a place in our lives as if you have no idea where to start with a workout program hire a trainer, if you break a bone or need medical advice you can see a doctor, and teachers are amazing but don't hold the answers to everything reminder I was a 6th grade teacher and definitely didn't know all the answers. I have numerous guests coming on this month that range from yoga teachers to energy healers, to Ayurvedic practitioners and dietitians. All with the goal to help empower you to take back some of the power over yourself. Don't doubt the little thought that comes in your mind that you should do xyz. If it keeps showing up day in and day out it might be time to start exploring what's coming up. Bo Forbes is a clinical psychologist, embodiment guide, urban contemplative, and research collaborator in the science of well-being. Her paradigm-bending work explores the body as an essential part of transformation and the inextricable links between individual and collective well-being. Bo’s work is interdisciplinary, and integrates emerging research in science, psychology, somatics, and contemplative practice with decades of experience on the front lines of somatic education. Since the 1990’s, her experience in the field of trauma and social epigenetics has included inpatient and outpatient psychiatric settings, private practice, organizational consulting, somatic therapy, and scholarship. She has a unique perspective on embodiment: she works intimately with the body in relation to trauma, and has also experienced, written about, and spoken publicly about sexual assault and harassment. Her mother was a prisoner of war in World War II who between the ages of 7 and 12 was forced to march through Kenya, Uganda, and Siberia. And until the age of two, she lived with her parents on a Seneca reservation in New York before its destruction by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers; her master’s thesis focused on the bodily rituals of indigenous cultures. Bo co-teaches a course at Tufts University with colleague Kris Manjapra that focuses on colonialism, social justice, and the body. She is the founder of Embodied Awareness, an online education company, and teaches workshops and trainings internationally. She recently presented her work on interoception, connective tissue, and emotional health at the Fascia Research Congress in Berlin. She has written scholarly and lay articles for numerous leading magazines, and is the author of Yoga for Emotional Balance: Simple Practices to Help Relieve Anxiety and Depression and Her newest book on the science and practice of embodiment, is slated for publication in early 2020.

Taoist Manimal Podcast Ep. 41 Candace Stevens "It all started with George Harrison. In 2003, I was introduced to and promptly fell in love with The Beatles. The moment I heard the song "Within You Without You", I became deeply curious about yogic philosophy and approaches to life. My first college summer, I took a yoga class at a local community college. The desire to more deeply understand reality ultimately led me to earn a Bachelor's degree in Philosophy (as well as one in Communication) from Villanova University in 2008. I wanted to find a a way to apply my desire to explore and communicate about the deeper questions in life in a way that could serve others, which led me to earn my Master's Degree in Clinical and Counseling Psychology from Chestnut Hill College in 2012. While I was earning my degree, I also completed my first teacher training in 2010, and immediately began teaching. I very quickly saw the importance of connecting yoga and mental health, and over the next few years studied with researchers in the budding field (such as Bo Forbes and Bessel van der Kolk) to learn as much as I could about how to heal the mind through the body. A very important component of what I do is shaped by my primary teacher, Shiva Rea, who Iâve been studying with since 2012. Studying with Shiva has helped me more deeply feel the poetry behind postures, understand the healing power of free-form movement, and deepen my understanding of the evolution of sequencing, towards both physical and energetic outcomes. I was deeply shaped by my clinical work, particularly with women who had experienced trauma from domestic abuse. I came to appreciate freedom and empowerment much more deeply, and apply what I learned in nearly everything I do professionally. I also spent a year working as a trauma-specialized family therapist. Brooke's personal path with her own body, how learning through the podcast changed the way she sees the body, how she parents based on what she's learned, her current practices (particularly in natural movement and somatic meditation), and what the road ahead looks like are all covered in this closing conversation for season 3.
Bo Forbes is a clinical psychologist, yoga teacher, and Integrative Yoga Therapist. We’re following up on the last two episodes which are pretty interoception based- first with Will Johnson and then with Norm Farb. A central guiding theme of Bo’s work is with interoception, and she has put together the Interoception Tribal Council which is bringing together researchers, primarily neuroscientists, who are looking at interoception and its effect on the whole person’s health both physically and mentally. In this conversation we talk about some of the amazing research that is coming out these days, but we also talk about her own experience putting her interoceptive abilities to the test when she underwent hip surgery this year- which was her 4th hip surgery in 8 years. It’s a really beautiful story of living one’s practice.
Bo Forbes, clinical psychologist, yoga teacher, and integrative yoga therapist talks about what Integrative Yoga Therapy is, interoception, relaxing rather than corralling into expansion, why vinyasa and restorative yoga fit together on a continuum, and how using momentum when we get uncomfortable can get us onto some pretty slippery slopes.
Bo Forbes joins me to offer a glimpse into her work as a Yoga teacher and Yoga therapist. She artfully weaves together her training as a clinical psychologist and therapist with her knowledge of Yoga and contemplative practice. Bo discusses her understanding of what it means to cultivate embodied awareness, integrating the mind and body.
