Taoist Manimal Podcast Ep 47 Dr. La’Toya Latney Dr. La’Toya Latney is an exotic animal and zoo veterinarian. She's a boarded reptile medicine specialist under American Board of Veterinary Practitioners. Under their reptile specialty, she's one of 20 worldwide. She is the head of the Exotic Animal Medicine service at the University of Pennsylvania’s Veterinary Hospital. She grew up in a community that experienced poverty and violence as a regular part of daily existence, she has lived in a third world country, pilgrimaged out of the country and within it to study the classical Indian dance form Bharatanatyam, all while being a progressive advocate and teacher for a unique and growing service. She also has been one of my closest friends for 7 years, legal family member by marriage, and soul-mate by nature of my deep appreciation, admiration, respect and love for her as a human living her own unique dharma while respecting and supporting my own. La’Toya and I recently separated as traditional life partners, choosing to live our own paths while continuing to love, respect and care for one another as individuals outside of a romantic partnership. We don’t manage to get much into that in this discussion, but I anticipate that being the subject of future conversations as we continue to redefine things like what family is, soulmates consist of, and (as tends to fit with my affinity toward Taoism) how definitions of things (love being one example) always fall quite short of the power of a thing. In the meantime, La’Toya would like you to remember “don’t overextend yourself” as she redefines her own limits, while still making the world a better place because of her efforts in it. Taoist Manimal Podcast Ep. 41 Candace Stevens "It all started with George Harrison. In 2003, I was introduced to and promptly fell in love with The Beatles. The moment I heard the song "Within You Without You", I became deeply curious about yogic philosophy and approaches to life. My first college summer, I took a yoga class at a local community college. The desire to more deeply understand reality ultimately led me to earn a Bachelor's degree in Philosophy (as well as one in Communication) from Villanova University in 2008. I wanted to find a a way to apply my desire to explore and communicate about the deeper questions in life in a way that could serve others, which led me to earn my Master's Degree in Clinical and Counseling Psychology from Chestnut Hill College in 2012. While I was earning my degree, I also completed my first teacher training in 2010, and immediately began teaching. I very quickly saw the importance of connecting yoga and mental health, and over the next few years studied with researchers in the budding field (such as Bo Forbes and Bessel van der Kolk) to learn as much as I could about how to heal the mind through the body. A very important component of what I do is shaped by my primary teacher, Shiva Rea, who Iâve been studying with since 2012. Studying with Shiva has helped me more deeply feel the poetry behind postures, understand the healing power of free-form movement, and deepen my understanding of the evolution of sequencing, towards both physical and energetic outcomes. I was deeply shaped by my clinical work, particularly with women who had experienced trauma from domestic abuse. I came to appreciate freedom and empowerment much more deeply, and apply what I learned in nearly everything I do professionally. I also spent a year working as a trauma-specialized family therapist. Taoist Manimal Podcast Ep. 37 Emile Sorger Emile sees movement as a discipline, a conversation and a celebration of being. He began in the womb of his mother as a mysterious intelligence assembled his body in a profoundly elegant and organized way. Emile's childhood was characterized by inexhaustible physical energy coupled with a very serious interest in stillness and introspection, exemplified by his proclivity for climbing trees and sitting for long stretches in their highest branch. His formal yoga training began in 2005 at Goucher College where he studied yoga asana alongside meditation and religious philosophy. Since then he has studied meditation in India, Tibetan Buddhism in the Himalayas, Yoga Asana and Capoiera in Baltimore, Handbalancing in Philadelphia and New York, more meditation in the hills of Virginia, geometrically based and mythically infused yoga in Manhattan and the Ido Portal method in Manayunk. EmileâÂÂs biggest influences include Kim Manfredi and Will Walter of Charm City Yoga, Nevine Michaan of Katonah, Marcy Vaughn of The Three Doors, Lin Junming of the Fu Jian Circus, Johnny Sapinoso of the Ido Portal method, the Iceman Wim Hof, his brothers in yoga Noah Julian, Johnathan Raiss and Ari Halbert, his sister in dance Lily Kind and the cosmic inner guru that permeates all matter. EmileâÂÂs classes integrate traditional yoga sequencing and creative movement with contemporary mythology, music and inspiration with the aim of creating a space in which students can discover and express themselves in their individual and universal form. He is the co-founder of Yoga and Movement Sanctuary, PhiladelphiaâÂÂs most talked about studio. Taoist Manimal Podcast Ep 22 Noah Maxwell Noah Maxwell viewed by most as a fitness coach but in reality he is an "agent of change." Not all fitness coaches are created equal, and Noah is among the best of the best I have had the pleasure to meet and work with in person. "I began studying Kung Fu at age 9 and achieved a third-degree black belt in traditional Northern Praying Mantis Kung Fu in 2003. Martial arts showed me that diligent training can change the body and that changing the body can change the mind. I've worked as a full-time personal trainer and private strength coach since 2001. After majoring in exercise science at Temple University, I earned my strength and conditioning specialist certification from the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA). I'm a SFG Level II Kettlebell Instructor, certified practitioner of the Functional Movement Screen (FMS), and have the honor of being appointed a StrongFirst User Course Instructor by Pavel Tsatsouline, Chairman of StrongFirst. Through my work with athletes, the general population, and individuals with injuries and special needs, I've seen that diligent work and strengthening the body can truly change lives for the better. Winter Solstice Special: Nevine Michaan Pranayama with singing bowls by Leydin Kotapish. Nevine has been working on her yoga practice for over 35 years. It is through the practice that she has found the: âmagic of organic, organized nature. Taoist study has deepened my sense of this inner directional intelligence of the body. âManipulating the form of the body through asanas and refining the measure and meter of the breath through pranayamas, yoga has provided me with tools for my personal and communal growth. Yoga practice promotes the joys of integrity, of virtue, and of honing skills for developed well-being.â This recording was made in a recent pranayana (breathing) class taught by my teacher Nevine. My life, practices, relationships and general well-being have all made great improvements in large part due to the practices she has taught me. She is a treasure and I cherish everything she has taught me and continues to teach me. Great thanks to all the Gurus that surround us, the moms, dads, brothers, sisters, friends, teachers and lovers that hold up a mirror subtly drawing attention to the blemishes in the metaphorical glass. Allowing us to clean them through a process of intention and thus allowing to see the truth that lies beneath. Recorded on December 2nd, 2016 Lily Kind with Noah Julian: Lily is a multi-media artist focused on dance-making. She is interested in how comedy works, what our bodies know, the social functions of dance, and the possibility of being a locally-responsible artist in a world of global capitalism. I met Lily this past Spring when she joined the Yoga and Movement Sanctuary team, and have since had the opportunity to watch her perform, learn from her and teach her. In this podcast I had an opportunity to sit down and better digest her journey as she explains her experience with dance and other forms of movement. Taoist Manimal Podcast Episode 19 Noah Julian with Ari Halbert Recorded on November 19th, 2016 One of my dearest friends and most respected of colleagues. Ari is a musician, sound engineer, yoga practitioner, movement instructor, (soon to be certified) acupuncturist, deep thinker and much more. We jump subjects effortlessly and go off on crazy tangents, it may be the least structured of my podcasts so far, but it is amoung my favorite conversations. Recorded on November 18th, 2016 Noah Julian with Ron Wood: Before I ever met Ron, people talked about him reverentially. When I first started exploring the idea of movement outside of a yoga-asana context, friends and colleagues would emphatically express âyou have to meet Ron!â About 6 years after first hearing about the myth, I have the great honor not only to meet Ron but to study from him and alongside him. Ronâs background, from dance to martial arts is impressive to say the least, and it is exciting to have him teach at my studio, Yoga and Movement Sanctuary, and be a part of the path that he continues to carve out. I hope you enjoy this conversation with my friend and teacher Ron Wood. Ron is not very active on social media but you can find him on facebook as Ron Wood. Recorded on November 11th, 2016 Noah Julian with Emile Sorger: Emile is a dear friend and my partner in business at the Yoga and Movement Sanctuary. Emile has a spiritual practice that mirrors my own in its quality of having many facets and his own intensity toward it. At one point Emile drew a metaphor to fighting a war of sorts and the many battles that must be fought to reign victorious in the self. I enjoy every conversation I have with this gentleman and always feel grateful to walk away with new concepts to ponder. Recorded on September 31st, 2016 Noah Julian with Johnathan Raiss: Johnathan is my oldest and one of my dearest friends in the Yoga and Movement communities. Having studied with several of the same teachers, we have had the opportunity to grow alongside one another, sometimes complementing and sometimes challenging each other's views. It has been invaluable to have an individual always striving for improvement in the crafts of teaching and self study. This conversation is as far reaching as any of had and another testament to how lucky I feel to have individuals such as this to dialogue and grow with. We couldn’t help but enter some (generally depressing) political dialogue, but overall we both seem to hope that following the election, we might all begin to mend the divisiveness that stagnates our growth. Recorded on October 8th, 2016 Noah Julian with Matt Hollenberg: In 2012 I shared a stage in Philadelphia's Kimmel Center with this gentleman. Now, Matt is able to look at that achievement as just a day on the job. Matt is making art on the highest of levels with peers and musicians we idolized starting out. He considers John Zorn a personal friend! Bridging the genre gap and showing that music is music. Some may listen to what he does and call it jazz and others might call it metal, but in reality those classifying it into a box are doing so with a lack of imagination and the expansiveness this music invites us to experience. (07/02/2015) This has been a long time coming, since I felt the need to sit with this one for a while. Technically the first episode of The Taoist Manimal Podcast as it was recorded earliest. After a rather profound experience I felt the need to sit with my mom and tell her how much she means to me and relive some of our past and work through a lot of stuff I had never said aloud to anyone. This was very emotional for me, and I know I talked a lot, it was one of the most profound conversations I’ve ever had, but it is almost hard for me to listen back to - as I hear how scattered I am at times and how much I didn’t slow down to listen. Though, the theme to this one seems to be one of acceptance, and in large part accepting who and where I am right now in life, which has been a recent practice of mine. I hope you will get something out of this, the most profound podcasts I have been lucky enough to hear where those with or about loved ones. I hope if nothing else this inspires some of you to be more open with everyone in your life.
(08/22/2015) A short podcast, stream of thought style, explaining why I'm podcasting and what I'm learning from the process. Some thoughts on how to listen for those who don't already listen to podcasts and what the world of podcasting has to offer. Some long form podcasts on the way and very diverse guests. www.NoahMoves.com
