Does your health plan stress you out more than it helps you? If navigating wellness feels overwhelming, you're not alone. Luckily, wellness doesn't have to be complicated. In this episode, Jenn shows us how. On this episode of Salad with a Side of Fries, host Jenn Trepeck is here to help you uncomplicate your health journey. From focusing on what works for your body to tuning out the endless noise of health content online, Jenn breaks down the essentials—clean eating, movement, sleep, stress management, including the power of social connection, and the role of supplements. Learn why consistency matters more than perfection, how to listen to your body's signals, and why sleep might be the ultimate biohack. It's time to simplify, take control, and make wellness work for you—without the stress! The Salad With a Side of Fries podcast is hosted by Jenn Trepeck, who discusses wellness and weight loss for real life, clearing up the myths, misinformation, bad science & marketing surrounding our nutrition knowledge and the food industry. Let's dive into wellness and weight loss for real life, including drinking, eating out, and skipping the grocery store. IN THIS EPISODE: (02:44) Don't allow your health plan to stress you; focus on what works for your body and your life(06:19) Limit how many content creators you follow and the truth about protein and fiber(10:31) Clean, lean protein, veggies and fruit, and eating at certain times of the day(15:27) Fasting, the difference between unprocessed and processed foods, and movement(23:40) Listen to your body, stress, sleep and supplements(31:15) Social connection and community are key for longevity(33:08) Sleep is the ultimate biohack for a healthy body(37:02) The quality of a supplement mattersKEY TAKEAWAYS:If your health plan feels overwhelming, it might do more harm than good. Simplify your wellness by focusing on what works for you and limiting the experts you follow to avoid confusion and decision fatigue. Our bodies are wired to respond to stress as a survival mechanism, but modern-day stressors—like emails and phone notifications—trigger the same physiological response as life-threatening situations. This prolonged fight-or-flight state shuts down essential functions like digestion, immune response, and detoxification, contributing to long-term health issues.Simple actions like deep breathing before meals, movement, quality nutrition, fresh air, and social connection can help regulate stress and improve overall well-being. Prioritizing sleep and establishing consistent routines further support mental and physical health.Supplements can be a powerful tool to add on, but they cannot take the place of other healthy lifestyle choices.QUOTES: (07:48) “No expert knows your body better than you do. We teach ourselves not to listen to our bodies, we outsource all of that to the rules, and we follow the rules and ignore the signs and communication coming from our bodies.” Jenn Trepeck(11:45) “The difference between a meal and a snack is how much we have at a time and how long till we might need to eat again.” Jenn Trepeck(21:33) “We've heard sitting is the new smoking. The thing we're doing that we don't realize is slowly killing us because sitting all day is not human.” Jenn Trepeck(27:34) “The physiological response designed to save our lives now contributes to our demise.” Jenn Trepeck(42:54) “Anything we're doing for one part of the body supports everything in the body.” Jenn TrepeckRESOURCES:Become A Member of Salad with a Side of FriesJenn's Free Menu PlanA Salad With a Side of FriesA Salad With A Side Of Fries MerchA Salad With a Side of Fries InstagramTop Five Tips for Digesting Nutrition NewsNutrition Nugget: 30-30-30The Ultimate BiohackSleep On It 60 Second Health Quiz

Panic is never a solution. In moments of crisis or uncertainty, it is easy to feel overwhelmed and reactive. By cultivating equanimity, we can sidestep panic and instead approach challenges with a level head. This doesn't mean we ignore our feelings but rather that we create a mental framework that allows us to address issues rationally and calmly. Connecting with our inner stillness can lead to clearer thinking and more effective decision-making. All sentient beings fundamentally desire to be happy, healthy, and free from suffering. Despite the diversity of our circumstances, we are united by this common aspiration. This understanding fosters compassion and empathy towards ourselves and others. It reminds us that behind every reaction, there is likely a story of struggle and desire for peace.
Mental illness, anxiety, substance abuse and fear are so prevalent in our lives it's no wonder our social systems are in shambles. As individuals we need to find ways to cope with life. Many people turn to self medication in order to deal with their day. It would serve us better to teach coping mechanisms in order to handle life's heavy moments. Really drive the development of strong bonds and social support systems as a community. We also need to take action for ourselves and learn new ways of handling stressful moments. There are a multitude of ways to keep your anxiety at bay and protect your inner peace. Exercise, meditation, remove toxic people from your life and get your house in order. Start simple and tidy your space. Whether it's your house or room, keep it clean and organized. It promotes a sense of calm and relaxation and gives you a safe comfortable space. All it takes to make a change is follow through. Take it one step at a time. Soon enough you'll realize the level of calm mindfulness has brought to your life.Join the sesh for a deep discussion about the concept of protecting your inner peace.I hope you enjoy!Subscribe and visit Tots420.com

Together we dive into the essence of navigating the myriad emotional highs and lows that life brings. With a keen awareness that our perceptions color our experiences, listeners are invited to reflect on the good, the bad, and the mundane events that unfold throughout the week. Through her candid musings, your host Margaret Meloni emphasizes the importance of recognizing your feelings and responses to life's occurrences, gently reminding you that while you can't control what happens, you can certainly control how you react to it. It's about fostering resilience and strength, rather than being swept away by the extremes of emotional highs and lows. To enrich the discussion, Margaret also recounts a story from the Pali Canon, highlighting the four immeasurables: loving kindness, compassion, sympathetic joy, and equanimity. Playing with our kids doesn't always come naturally to parents. For some of us, it might feel uninteresting, repetitive, or as though the only way to participate is by taking over. But today's conversation might just change the way you think about play. We're diving into the transformative power of play as a form of communication that allows our kids to feel safe while exploring what's going on inside them. Joining me is Georgie Wisen-Vincent, an expert in play therapy and co-author, alongside Dr. Tina Payne Bryson, of the new book The Way of Play: Using Little Moments of Big Connection to Raise Kind and Confident Kids. In today's episode, Georgie shares insights from The Way of Play and explains why play is a universal language that helps kids express their feelings and navigate life's challenges. We discuss how parents can intentionally use play to strengthen bonds, nurture sibling relationships, and reconnect after time apart. Georgie also offers practical strategies for engaging in play effectively, such as mirroring your child's play to deepen connection and understanding. Plus, we explore how play isn't just for kids—it's a lifelong skill that can enhance relationships at every stage of life. About Georgie Wisen-Vincent Georgie Wisen-Vincent, LMFT, RPT-S, ECMHS is a nationally recognized play therapy expert and co-author (with Dr. Tina Payne Bryson) of the new book -- THE WAY OF PLAY (Penguin Random House, January 2025). Georgie is the Founder/Director of The Play Strong Institute, a center devoted to the study, research, and practice of play therapy through a neurodevelopment lens, along with Dr. Bryson, the Founder/Executive Director of The Center for Connection, a multidisciplinary clinical practice in Southern California. Georgie is also a child, adolescent, and family psychotherapist and maintains a private practice at The Center for Connection. The Play Strong Institute offers the Certificate in Play Therapy with a Neurorelational Emphasis, an educational pathway toward becoming a credentialed play therapist. Through the Institute, the Play Strong approach was developed using child-led, adult scaffolded connection and play to help parents, therapists, educators, and care providers augment intervention aimed at the social, emotional, developmental, and learning needs of children from infancy to early adolescence. Play Strong Parenting (a component of Neurofilial Therapy) has been validated by empirical research and is currently being studied with non-parental caregivers and early childhood educators, among other research investigations currently underway. Things you'll learn Why play is a natural language that fosters social-emotional development, allowing children to express their feelings and process difficult experiences How parents can strengthen connections by intentionally setting aside time for play and becoming active observers rather than controllers How little moments of play can lead to big connections, helping to nurture sibling relationships and strengthen bonds after time apart How to engage in play effectively, mirroring our child's play to enhance connection and understanding Why play is a lifelong skill that not only supports children's growth but also enriches adult relationships and communication Resources mentioned The Way of Play: Using Little Moments of Big Connection to Raise Kind and Confident Kids by Tina Payne Bryson and Georgie Wisen-Vincent The Play Strong Institute Tina Payne Bryson's website Georgie Wisen-Vincent on Instagram Tina Payne Bryson on Instagram The Way of Play on the Play Strong Institute website The Whole-Brain Child: 12 Revolutionary Strategies to Nurture Your Child's Developing Mind by Dr. Dan Siegel and Tina Payne Bryson PhD No-Drama Discipline: The Whole-Brain Way to Calm the Chaos and Nurture Your Child's Developing Mind by Dr. Dan Siegel and Tina Payne Bryson PhD Learn more about your ad choices.
