In this fascinating episode of the Compared to Who? podcast, Heather Creekmore is joined by Dr. Brook Sheehan to explore the topic of listening to your body—addressing misconceptions, fears, and spiritual questions that often come up in conversations about health and self-care. Dr. Brook Sheehan shares her powerful personal story, including growing up in a conventional medical model, her diagnosis with cerebral palsy, and her journey to becoming a chiropractor. Through her experiences, Dr. Brook discusses how she moved from ignoring her body’s signals to idolizing health—and finally, to navigating a balanced, grace-filled approach to honoring the wisdom God built into our bodies. Highlights include: The difference between bodily wisdom and New Age thinking from a Christian perspective How tuning into simple “this or that” decisions each day can help rebuild trust with your body Destigmatizing emotional eating and recognizing that body signals aren’t always black and white Practical cues to listen for—like cravings, random sneezing, and dry skin—and how to respond with compassion and wisdom Encouragement for everyone who feels “broken” or out of touch with what their body needs The importance of grace over perfection in both spiritual and physical health Dr. Brook also offers her “Body Signal Decoder” as a valuable resource for listeners who want to decode common body signals from a holistic perspective, covering physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual pillars. In this episode of Candidly with Coffee, we unpack why this popular advice is often misunderstood and misapplied, especially in midlife. They explain how “listening to your body” can quietly turn into avoidance, self-sabotage, or constantly giving yourself a pass and how true self-awareness actually requires a balance of discipline, structure, and compassion. This conversation is about finding the middle ground: not being overly rigid and punishing, but not being so flexible that nothing ever changes. What you'll learn: • Why “listening to your body” is not the same as honoring your long-term goals • How comfort-seeking and emotional cues can override logic and consistency • The difference between self-respect and self-indulgence • Why structure creates freedom — especially in midlife • How to rebuild self-trust without burnout or all-or-nothing thinking • When your body needs rest… and when it needs directionIf you've been stuck in cycles of starting over, second-guessing yourself, or feeling conflicted between discipline and grace, this episode will help you reframe what listening to your body should actually look like.#mindsetshift #midlifehealth #selftrust #consistencyoverperfection #fatlossmindset #womenshealthover40 #candidlywithcoffee #podcast

In this episode, Hannah is joined by Donna Noble, whose relationship with yoga began like many others, as a place of relief, structure and support during a demanding corporate career (a likely cause of the Bells Palsy she suffered with). Over time, though, something shifted. The very practices that once helped her began to feel uncomfortable, confusing and at odds with her body.Donna shares what it was like to realise that forcing herself into familiar shapes was no longer serving her, and how questioning long held assumptions about yoga opened the door to a very different way of moving and practising. We explore how pain, discomfort and persistent niggles are often normalised in yoga spaces, and why so many students assume the problem is their body rather than the method. This conversation is about curiosity, unlearning and the courage to pause when something no longer feels right.A thoughtful episode for anyone who has ever wondered why yoga stopped feeling supportive, or sensed there might be another way.About DonnaDonna Noble is an author, and speaker on body positivity, diversity and inclusion, social justice, wellbeing and Yoga.Donna's personal mission has always been to improve diversity and inclusion in the Yoga and wellbeing space and within corporate environments, whilst also championing health and wellbeing for everyone.Donna continually works towards making a difference and leaving behind a legacy of greater diversity and inclusion.Donna shares her passion for promoting health and wellbeing and creating inclusive spaces within the yoga and wellbeing industry in a light-hearted and accessible way.  She was also one of the original co-creators of the UK's first Black Fitness Festival in 2020Donna has delivered numerous workshops, at conferences and for various organisations on diversity inclusion, social justice and body positivity. Send us a textWhat if the foods we reach for to feel better are actually adding to our pain? In this episode, we talk honestly about the pain–comfort–inflammation loop, sharing our own stories of mystery aches, stiff mornings, and the subtle clues our bodies were giving us all along. We explore overlooked signs of inflammation—like puffy faces in photos, tight rings, itchy scalps, burning skin, and that heavy stiffness that drains the desire to move. We also unpack common surprises, like how drinking something all day can still lead to dehydration, why artificial sweeteners matter, and how simple chair exercises can help when walking hurts. Along the way, we share personal experiments—taking a break from gluten, easing off diet sodas, trying dairy alternatives—and how quickly pain eased and energy began to return.Instead of rules or shame, we focus on curiosity, prayer, and gentle testing. We talk about what real freedom looks like—not eating anything anytime, but choosing what supports healing so we can show up fully for the people and purposes we love. With a faith-first lens, we offer six grace-based steps: inviting God into the process, noticing patterns without obsessing, running short single-variable experiments, prioritizing water, practicing gentle movement, and renewing the mind with truth. Many of us were taught to override our needs, stay productive at all costs, and ignore the signals our nervous system sends when it's overwhelmed. But your body isn't failing you — it's communicating. This short episode is a reminder that the shift isn't always about doing more. Sometimes, it's about pausing without guilt, noticing what your system needs, and choosing safety over pressure. In this episode, you'll learn: Why feeling tired or overwhelmed isn't a personal failure How your nervous system communicates through your body A gentle reframe for moments when you feel "off" Why slowing down is a form of awareness, not weakness Let today be about listening instead of fixing.

If you're tired to your bones, craving soup and bread, and wondering why you can't seem to keep up with… well, anything right now, you're not alone. In this episode, Michelle shares her own recent crash into winter exhaustion (including a 12-hour sleep after Black Friday) and walks you through what's actually happening in your body and nervous system at this time of year. She explains how shorter days, less light, and constant holiday demands set the stage for both physical hibernation and emotional burnout—and how diet culture swoops in to sell you control, discipline, and “New Year, New You” just when you're most vulnerable. Instead of seeing winter as a problem to solve, Michelle offers practical ways to honour your body's need for rest, comfort, and gentler rhythms, so you can move through this season with more compassion and less self-blame.In this episode, you'll hear about:Why winter fatigue is normal, not a moral failingHow reduced daylight affects melatonin, serotonin, circadian rhythms, mood, and motivation—and why your body naturally shifts into energy conservation mode.Comfort food cravings as protection, not a problemWhy those longings for soups, stews, bread, and “soul food” are your body's way of seeking warmth, stability, and nervous-system soothing. The winter + burnout combo that fuels diet cultureHow emotional labour, family dynamics, holiday busyness, and end-of-year reflection create peak burnout—and make quick-fix body plans feel extra tempting. The burnout-to-diet-culture pipelineWhy exhaustion makes us cling to rules, plans, and “resets,” and how to pause and ask: Is this actually care, or is this control?Gentle structures instead of rigid rulesIdeas for soft “anchor points” like warm breakfasts, a few minutes of daylight, earlier bedtimes, and other rhythms that support you without demanding a full-body transformation.Getting curious about cravingsHow to ask what your cravings are offering—comfort, warmth, connection, pleasure—and ways to meet those needs with food and non-food nourishment.Letting yourself rest without earning itA reminder that rest is not a reward for productivity; it's part of the natural winter rhythm your body is designed for.Michelle's personal winter ritualsFrom Indian takeout and daily baths to a tech-free “cocoon” room with records and candles, Michelle shares how she's been giving herself permission to slow down and just be.If you're craving permission to stop fighting your winter body and start listening to it, this episode is your invitation to exhale. I also offer practical guidance for how to pause, listen, and make decisions in real time, even when fear or doubt follow closely behind. They unpack how our nervous systems get hijacked by stress in modern work, how noticing our physical responses becomes a tool (not just a symptom), and how teams and agencies can shift culture to reclaim better performance and wellbeing. This is a grounded, real‑world conversation—no fluff—about how our bodies, our minds, and our projects intersect.Resources from this episode:Join the Digital Project Manager CommunitySubscribe to the newsletter to get our latest articles and podcastsConnect with Abigail on LinkedIn and InstagramCheck out SouthleftConnect with Matthew on LinkedIn and The BureauThe Leadership Circle Profile assessment What it is: The most comprehensive 360-degree leadership assessment that measures both competencies (what you do) and internal assumptions (how you think)Why I use it: It's the only tool I've found that measures both reactive leadership patterns (controlling, protecting, complying) and creative leadership capacities (relating, self-awareness, authenticity, systems thinking)Visual profile shows leaders exactly where they're operating from fear vs. trustI'm certified to administer and interpret this assessmentSomatic & Body Intelligence PracticesWindow of Tolerance (from Polyvagal Theory): there's a "window" where you can think clearly and respond consciously. In an industry obsessed with outward appearances, what if we made decisions by listening to our body and not just looking at it? If clothing choices came from a place of self-awareness, how would that change the way we design products and run fashion businesses? Victoria Lister approaches her work from this perspective. In episode 124, she shares what made her start listening to her body and what that has meant for her underwear and lounge brand Hummingbird Pie. Victoria is the founder and owner-operator of Hummingbird Pie, an Australian-based, micro-business that has supplied women with luxe, everyday basics since 2015. The business was born from Victoria's personal quest to solve the problem of thigh chafing without resorting to shapewear – a challenge that led her to create Hummingbird Pie's flagship product, long-legged underpants known as ‘Longerpants'. Today, the range has expanded to include outer as well as underwear, designed to help women of all ages, stages, shapes and sizes to feel at home in themselves – not reshaped, but supported, relaxed and free to be. Hummingbird Pie fits in and around Victoria's work as a researcher, with the help of her wonderful husband and two dear friends who work casually on different aspects of business, and local suppliers and manufacturers. This episode explores: Fitting the customer How the Hummingbird Pie target customer has expanded since the start of the business The mindset that unites Hummingbird Pie customers What makes Hummingbird Pie garments different The relationship Victoria wants her customers to have with Hummingbird Pie clothes Fitting the lifestyle The challenges of scaling a cottage business Why new products don't always start with design What gave Victoria the courage to start a business The behind the scenes lifestyle that supports Victoria's business Fitting the values How Victoria's self-awareness and valuing her body influences her approach to design Why Victoria prefers working with other collaborators instead of learning how to do everything herself People and resources mentioned in this episode: Hummingbird Pie website Hummingbird Pie email Hummingbird Pie Instagram Victoria's LinkedIn Do you want fashion business tips and resources like this sent straight to your inbox? Whole-Body Healing Without Guesswork: Listening to Your Body for Real Answers with Beth Mielbrecht

Healthy Mind, Healthy Life

On Healthy Mind, Healthy Life, host Avik speaks with “health detective” Beth Mielbrecht about moving beyond trial-and-error wellness. Beth blends engineering-style problem solving with energetic and bioindividual approaches to help people identify root causes—rather than silencing symptoms. From digestion and detox to stress, grief, and belief systems, she explains how tuning into your body's signals can drive practical change in daily choices. This direct conversation challenges “it's just age/genetics” thinking and offers a clear path: ask better questions, listen closely, and take aligned action.   About the guest : Beth Mielbrecht, known as a “health detective,” combines a background in mechanical engineering with training in Reiki, homeopathy, and bioenergetic testing. She helps clients uncover individualized root causes and create targeted next steps—without medical diagnosis or one-size-fits-all fixes.   Key takeaways:   Your body is not the enemy—it's always trying to heal; symptoms are messages, not mistakes. Treating pain without asking “why now, why here?” can mute signals but miss the root cause. Daily elimination, safe detoxification, and reducing exposure to common toxins can unlock stalled progress. Emotions matter: grief and chronic stress often map onto physical weak spots (e.g., lungs, adrenals, thyroid). Beliefs shape outcomes; closing the door on possibility narrows what you try—and what works. Practical cadence: ask specific questions → listen to what changes symptoms → act on small, testable steps. Track patterns (food, sleep, people, places) to see what reliably helps or harms. “Whole-body” isn't anti-medicine; it's expanding your health team and methods when standard paths stall. Gentle, personalized support (e.g., homeopathic/energetic tools) can increase capacity to move, engage, and live. Progress compounds: relief in one area (e.g., joints) can catalyze energy, mood, and life decisions.   How to connect with the guest  : Website: yourhealthwithbeth.comSocial: @YourHealthWithBethFree quiz available on the website.   Want to be a guest on Healthy Mind, Healthy Life? Those whispers of "I don't feel right" or "I'm so tired" aren't just inconveniences – they're crucial messages that deserve your attention. In this deeply personal conversation, health and mindset coach Andrea Joy shares her harrowing journey from severe burnout to vibrant health. After opening her own business at 26 while caring for her mother with stage four cancer, Andrea found herself facing multiple autoimmune conditions, including lupus symptoms and hypothyroidism. Even if a doctor says you're okay – you know what's best."For entrepreneurs especially, this episode offers invaluable wisdom on preventing burnout before it takes hold. Andrea outlines practical strategies for creating your personal wellness "toolbox" and incorporating self-care directly into your business plan, not as an afterthought but as a foundation for sustainable success.Whether you're facing burnout now, recovering from health challenges, or simply want to build resilience before problems arise, this conversation offers compassionate, experienced guidance to help you thrive, not just survive. After five years on a vegan diet, she transitioned to Keto in 2020 to address her health needs more deeply. Then, in May 2024, she made the switch to a Carnivore diet, and the results have been nothing short of transformative.Since embracing Carnivore, Andrea has experienced a profound shift in her health. She gained 20 pounds of strength, steadily reversing more autoimmune symptoms that had persisted for years. The benefits have been undeniable: higher energy levels, no more intense cravings for sugar or carbs, and even the return of a regular menstrual cycle after two years of inconsistency. Andrea believes food is our medicine and the importance of tapping into your body to understand what your body is asking for to thrive!Social Media and Bio Website FacebookInstagramYouTubeLinkedInTikTokWe hope you have enjoyed this episode. “You should listen to your body” — but what does that actually mean? In this episode, we're breaking down one of the most common (and confusing) pieces of advice in the intuitive eating space: how to actually understand how food makes you feel. If you've ever thought, “I want to listen to my body… but I have no idea what I'm listening for,” this one's for you. We walk through the real-life barriers that block us from tuning in — like busyness, distraction, diet rules, and self-worth — and then guide you through simple ways to reconnect with your internal cues. From digestive reactions to emotional responses, energy levels to satisfaction, we cover the full spectrum of physical and mental signals your body gives you after eating. In this episode: How to check in with simple prompts like “pleasant, unpleasant, or neutral?” What to notice beyond fullness: energy, mood, digestion, and more How to move from food rules to body trust Real-life examples (including some funny ones!) of how tuning in changes everything Whether you're just starting your intuitive eating journey or want to deepen your connection to your body, this episode will give you practical tools and new perspectives to explore.
