Comedian Bobbie Oliver is a charming conversationalist. She comes to us filled with witty anecdotes dispensed with southern charm and precise comedic timing you could set a Swiss watch to. But this Buddhist feminist activist philosophical comedian extraordinaire, came from humble beginnings. Bobbie has gone from 7 family members living in a small two bedroom trailer, out in Covington, Georgia, to owning her own comedy school in Los Angeles CA. Her school, The Tao of Comedy, is one of the best places in North America, to develop your comedic voice. It is truly Bobbie Oliver's Magnum opus, though she is not done yet. This multi faceted entertainer is a joy to talk to. She comes filled with wisdom intellect and humor all rolled up into one. Her 30 years plus of Comedy experience shows during her Amazon comedy special, “Bobbie Oliver‘s Greatest Hits“. We have yet to unpack all the complexities of this comedy legend called Bobbie Oliver. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/rawle-d/message
Plenty is said about "safe spaces" and the effects they have on social discourse and, very specifically, comedy, but it isn't often that you actual hear from a legitimate safe space and the folks that built something to directly address rampant, systemic issues in the art form and community of comedy such as misogyny, exclusion, and even hack writing. Bobbie Oliver has spent several years taking on all such issues through her own classes and workshops as well as the venue she founded in LA, Tao Comedy Studio, dedicated to being as inclusive as can be and free of chauvinist and purely edgelord comedians. TCB's Jake Kroeger kicks off 2023 with a deep chat with Bobbie Oliver about pushing the art form forward (as well as addressing Andrew Tate ever claiming he was being some sort of comedic character). Find more about Tao Comedy Studio at taocomedystudio.com and follow @taocomedystudio across platforms and follow Bobbie @thebobbieoliver on Twitter on IG and watch her special, Bobbie Oliver's Greatest Hits. Have you ever been out to dinner with a group of friends and after a bunch of chit chat the table falls to a dead silence… And as that awkward feeling starts creeping up your shoulders someone starts babbling again and relief washes over you? What is it about silence that gets to people? I think that we are so used to being bombarded by sound, that when silence arrives, it's so unfamiliar that we have an unconscious need to fill it back up. Why? Because nature abhors a vacuum. We have an unconscious need to fill empty space. What does this have to do with comedy? Well, It's been said that “music happens in the silence between the notes”. This is also true for comedy. Comedy happens in the pause. And if we look at our job as being a conductor on stage, then we get to create magic between ourselves and the audience And if you can master this one thing, it will make you a better comic in no time. In fact, if you're new and you build this in to your set straight from the gate, you'll give off the essence of being a pro. That's how powerful this is. Today, we're joined by Bobbie Oliver, author of The Tao of Comedy – Embrace The Pause And it was in her book, that I first read about the importance of pausing. You'll hear first hand how pausing on and offstage will help you build confidence and a commanding stage presence. Bobbie Oliver joined The Take On and I didn't stop laughing the entire time! Bobbie has made herself a name in the male-dominated world of stand-up comedy, and she shares her tips on how to navigate this misogynistic world. We also talked all about our thoughts of Trump as President and how to navigate in a family of Trump supporters. Bobbie has an educated twist to her jokes so when you're laughing, you're also learning something. She has created her own space called Tao Comedy Studio that has created a safe space for newcomers, people of color, LGBTQIA and women to feel comfortable to do their first stand-up set. Fun Fact: I did my first stand-up set at Tao and it was such an amazing place to do a first open mic. Looking for a laugh during these crazy times? Then this is the episode for you! More about Bobbie: Los Angeles comedian Bobbie Oliver is one of America’s funniest comics. Her act is smart and irreverent, and she never shies away from personal experience or edgy material. A native of Covington, GA, the city where the Dukes of Hazzard tv series was filmed, by way of Athens, GA, the hippest little city in the South, Bobbie’s Southern charm wins over audiences wherever she performs, never catering to the stereotype of “Southern comedy.” Bobbie has appeared on ABC, TNN, The Style Network, WeTV and Entertainers with Byron Allen. Bobbie was called one of the “best comics in America” by the New York Post. A regular on the Los Angeles comedy scene, Bobbie has performed at The Improv, The Ice House, The Comedy Store, Jon Lovitz Club, Flappers Comedy Club and clubs across the country, including Zanies, The Punchline, Nick’s Comedy Stop, The Laughing Skull and The Riviera in Las Vegas, and has been heard on Sirius XM Comedy Radio. Bobbie has performed at tons of colleges (including UCLA, USC, UC Irvine, UGA, Cal Tech, GA Tech and more) and corporate events (such as NASA, IBM, City of Hope, Congressional fundraisers and more). Bobbie has won many comedy contests and festivals including the Hollywood Ha Ha Festival, LA Superbowl of Comedy and was one of the LA winners in the national World Series of Comedy. Bobbie has appeared on billboards in Hollywood and on the cover of Pasadena Weekly twice. Bobbie owns Tao Comedy Studio in Los Angeles and published The Tao of Comedy: Embrace the Pause in 2013, recommended by Maria Bamford and Wendy Liebman. Bobbie Oliver is a Georgia native comedian who has learned the comedy ropes through touring and just aiming to make the experience better for everyone. You have seen her on TNN and The Style Network and runs a comedy club called Tao Comedy Studio in Los Angeles which is a female and LGBT friendly space where classes, mics, shows AND a yearly festival takes place. Through her music, we learn all about growing up in a trailer in the heart of Georgia with three MUCH older brothers, how she figured out she was funny in high school, when she realized you COULD be a comedian and how she started a comedy group in college because the first open mic she went to told her she was too young. From there we learn about her life on the road as a comic, how the man she'd end up marrying first depsized her and the music he introduced her to wound up becoming the inspiration for her yearly comedy festival. If you enjoyed the songs, learn more about the artists in our blog! https://ytunesshuffle.blogspot.com/2020/04/ytunes-shuffle-with-bobbie-olivers.html Then, we wrap up the episode with the First and Last Concert experience. Keep up to date with Bobbie Oliver, her Greatest Hits album due out soon, and everything Tao Comedy Studio. And you are always welcome to reach out to the show. We are on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter at @YTunesShuffle.

Bobbie is a comic, a teacher, and an adoptive parent. She opens up about her childhood of mental illness and abuse, her struggle to gain her own life, and taking in her sister's children. She has an inspiring story that gets dark, be warned, but there is plenty of humor, and ultimately redemption. Enjoy our chat! bobbieoliver.net kiracomedy.com allthingscomedy.com
