We review the documentary Too Soon: Comedy After 9/11 which you can catch on Vice TV on Sept. 8th, just a few days before the 20th anniversary of the 2001 attacks. The documentary features interviews with comedians including David Cross, Gilbert Godfried, Janeane Garofolo, and Marc Maron about the struggle to re-establish humor's place in the aftermath of the attacks that day. The film explores how stand-up comedians, Broadway performers, late-night hosts, and Saturday Night Live helped audiences laugh even in the darkest of days. Our guest is Julie Seabaugh the director, executive producer, and story editor of Too Soon: Comedy After 9/11.Too Soon premieres on VICE TV September 8 at 9 p.m. and will be repeating numerous times thereafter. (VICE TV is available via all major satellite and cable providers and the VICE TV app via iOS, Android, Apple TV, Roku, and Chromecast.)Julie Seabaugh grew up on a farm in rural Missouri and discovered stand-up when Dave Attell performed during her senior year of college. Way back in 2003, she founded and edited the criminally ahead of its time print and online comedy magazine Two Drink Minimum. Now the only full-time freelance comedy journalist in the United States, she's contributed to The New York Times, Rolling Stone, The Hollywood Reporter, GQ, Variety, The A.V. Club, The Village Voice, The Huffington Post, Spin, Playboy, Vulture, Paste, Time Out New York, Time Out Chicago, and numerous other alt-weeklies. Seabaugh's coverage of modern roasting culminated in the 2018 book Ringside at Roast Battle: The First Five Years of L.A.'s Fight Club for Comedians, and her love of Mitch Hedberg led to producing/hosting 2020's Hope on Top: A Mitch Hedberg Oral History for SiriusXM's Comedy Central Channel (available to stream via the SiriusXM app). With Emmy-nominated director and editor Nick Scown, she is currently producing the documentary Too Soon: Comedy After 9/11. It's full of lively adjectives and truly paints a picture of what the Amazing Johnathan looks like, what he's experiencing and how he got to his current state. I felt like he was sitting next to me, boisterously telling his story.”For nearly two decades Seabaugh has covered, judged, and moderated panels at festivals including the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, Just for Laughs Montreal, SXSW, San Francisco Sketchfest, New York Comedy Festival, Just for Laughs Toronto, Sasquatch, Grand Rapids' Gilda's LaughFest, Montana's Big Sky Comedy Festival, Austin's Moontower, Portland's Bridgetown, the Seattle International Comedy Competition, Riot L.A., Nashville's Wild West Comedy Festival, and Atlanta's Laughing Skull.Follow Julie on:Twitter: @julieseabaughFollow us on:Twitter: @supdocpodcastInstagram: @supdocpodcastFacebook: @supdocpodcastsign up for our mailing listAnd you can show your support to Sup Doc by donating on Patreon.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Bobbie Oliver joined The Take On and I didn't stop laughing the entire time! Bobbie has made herself a name in the male-dominated world of stand-up comedy, and she shares her tips on how to navigate this misogynistic world. We also talked all about our thoughts of Trump as President and how to navigate in a family of Trump supporters. Bobbie has an educated twist to her jokes so when you're laughing, you're also learning something. She has created her own space called Tao Comedy Studio that has created a safe space for newcomers, people of color, LGBTQIA and women to feel comfortable to do their first stand-up set. Fun Fact: I did my first stand-up set at Tao and it was such an amazing place to do a first open mic. Looking for a laugh during these crazy times? Then this is the episode for you! More about Bobbie: Los Angeles comedian Bobbie Oliver is one of America’s funniest comics. Her act is smart and irreverent, and she never shies away from personal experience or edgy material. A native of Covington, GA, the city where the Dukes of Hazzard tv series was filmed, by way of Athens, GA, the hippest little city in the South, Bobbie’s Southern charm wins over audiences wherever she performs, never catering to the stereotype of “Southern comedy.” Bobbie has appeared on ABC, TNN, The Style Network, WeTV and Entertainers with Byron Allen. Bobbie was called one of the “best comics in America” by the New York Post. A regular on the Los Angeles comedy scene, Bobbie has performed at The Improv, The Ice House, The Comedy Store, Jon Lovitz Club, Flappers Comedy Club and clubs across the country, including Zanies, The Punchline, Nick’s Comedy Stop, The Laughing Skull and The Riviera in Las Vegas, and has been heard on Sirius XM Comedy Radio. Bobbie has performed at tons of colleges (including UCLA, USC, UC Irvine, UGA, Cal Tech, GA Tech and more) and corporate events (such as NASA, IBM, City of Hope, Congressional fundraisers and more). Bobbie has won many comedy contests and festivals including the Hollywood Ha Ha Festival, LA Superbowl of Comedy and was one of the LA winners in the national World Series of Comedy. Bobbie has appeared on billboards in Hollywood and on the cover of Pasadena Weekly twice. Bobbie owns Tao Comedy Studio in Los Angeles and published The Tao of Comedy: Embrace the Pause in 2013, recommended by Maria Bamford and Wendy Liebman. Paul was born and raised in Atlanta, Georgia and had a traditional educational experience—went to college, got an Ivy League MBA, then joined the work force with $100k worth of school debt. However, after achieving success in the corporate world (he was one of the first 250 employees of Facebook as VP, West Coast Sales), he finally decided it was time to give in to his true passion. So, he left the high paying tech field behind and dove into the uncharted waters of… stand up comedy. Today, Paul’s comedy career takes him to clubs and corporate events all over North America, where he has opened for top comics like Dave Attell, Norm Macdonald, and Bill Burr. He just recently headlined Carolines on Broadway and in December, Paul headlined the West Side Comedy Club in New York City and is an official selection of the most recent Laughing Skull, Asheville, Cleveland, and North Carolina Comedy Festivals. When he isn’t touring comedy clubs, he is the host of his recently launched podcast, Crazy Money, in which he interviews entrepreneurs, celebrities, authors, and artists with a humorous perspective on money, wealth and careers. The show focuses on how we think about and live with money, as a society and as individuals. Andrew Stanley graduated from college with a finance degree. He always thought he was funny but didn’t know how to explore writing comedy. A mutual friend introduced Andrew to Scott Dunn, who writes for a lot of great comedians (Listen to Scott’s Episode of the podcast here). Scott recommended Andrew write five minutes of jokes, and then go do them at the local comedy club open mic. Andrew hesitated at first because of a fear of speaking in public. His father and grandfather are well known and respected pastors. Yet, he didn’t see himself as someone who would stand in front of strangers and talk for a living. But he mustered up a few jokes and attended an open mic at the Laughing Skull in Atlanta. With 20 comedians doing five minutes each, he remembers leaving there thinking he wasn’t the best, but wasn’t the worst. He decided to keep at it. Lucky for us he did. We cover a lot of ground on the podcast, including: How his father Andy Stanley influenced my podcast How the School of Laughs podcast influenced Andrew's early days How Lace Larabee encouraged him to pursue comedy Inviting friends out to see you perform Transitioning out of work and into Stand-Up Comedy Who was the last one to decide he should go into comedy full time Balancing church and comedy club events Being dark in the light place and light in the dark place Early successes that have led to more work The Catalyst Conference The blessings of family The benefits of clean comedy Confusing family-friendly with clean comedy Venn diagram of what works in comedy environments Building material that works in all places Starting with a punchline and building the joke from there The necessity of stage time Exploring writing processes Learning when and how to say “no” to wrong opportunities AND A WHOLE LOT MORE! First episode of the standup comedy podcast called "I Swear I'm Funny". I go over two 5 minutes sets performed at the Laughing Skull in ATL.
Comedy set after Tiffany Haddish at the Laughing Skull lounge in ATL.
I am going to be a bit slow over the holidays with releases. I've stepped down to one every other week for the time being as I am home on the east coast. In this interview, I chatted with Michael Longfellow! Michael is 24 and has already been on Conan, placed 2nd in Laughing Skull comedy festival, helps run Arizona's Big Pine Festival, was a TBS Comic to Watch, and can be seen on Hidden America with Jonah Ray. In this interview we touch on: getting into comedy, not joining a frat, college comedy at ASU, circumventing the gatekeepers, having a relationship and doing comedy, starting over in LA, running a festival, Laughing Skull Festival and his Conan Stand Up Set.
Back for another facebook LIVE edition of PWW, Tony Schiavone and Beau Le Blanc broke down the world of Pro-Wrestling as only they can. Beau went to Tony's live show at the Laughing Skull last weekend and Tony discussed doing that and what him and Conrad have planned for the future. Tony was also educating us on the latest with MLW and asked whether it seemed like "independent" promotions were making a greater effort to lock down talent lately. Ronda Rousey is currently WWE Raw's biggest star as she's been getting a lot of airtime lately, so Tony and Beau debate what that means for the program over all. Sasha Banks and Bayley finally uttered the words, "Women's Tag Team Champions" on TV, which Beau has been suggesting for months. Who would make good teams? Seems like several are already established. Over on Smackdown Beau wondered why we so rarely see Shinsuke Nakamura and Tony wondered why we keep seeing Jeff Hardy vs. Randy Orton. Beau made a face turn of sorts by shaving his face, which Tony was NOT in favor of, but the heel turn by Daniel Bryan was welcomed by both men. Listen at your leisure and let us know what you think at @PWW929 on twitter and facebook.
After one of their trademark hiatuses, PWW's Tony Schiavone and Beau Le Blanc returned to the 92-9 Digital Studio for another facebook live edition of Pro-Wrestling Wednesday! Recapping Tony's travel woes that scuttled the last episode attention turned to his upcoming live show Sunday, December 2nd at Laughing Skull lounge. (General Admission Tickets Still Available) Then of course, attention turned to the latest from WWE Television. Did WWE buy all the leather jackets for their roster? Why were two segments on Raw filmed at Medical Facilities? Is it possible WWE are paying to much attention to what people say about them on the internet? What can be done to elevate Finn Balor, Shinsuke Nakamura and other exceptional NXT talents that seem to be treading water on the main roster? How does one pronounce Battle Royale? Tony and Beau attempt to answer these questions and more, this week on Pro-Wrestling Wednesday.
On this episode of Talking Late Night, Max chats with Plug Chapman, a stand-up comedian, writer, actor, and even former rapper. Plug started his performance career as a rapper. Born and raised in Jackson, MI Katrina Pope, moved to Atlanta the summer of 1996, started putting her vision of becoming a comedienne together on February 18, 2010, when she woke up to an epiphany. “I want to be a comedian!” She immediately started to follow her dreams. The road to where she is known wasn't easy but she's remained determined, aggressive and humble the entire way.A self-proclaimed “professional student” she has worked various jobs throughout her life, to include being in the Military for 10 years, Paralegal, Esthetician, and Bartender. Never being able to find excitement in Corporate American, coupled with being fired for her “attitude not being conducive to the work environment” she started bartending. Bartending allowed her to develop her alter ego “Kspot”. Her flexible schedule of bartending 3 days a week, allowed Katrina to attend, St. Leo University and finally graduate in June 2009 with a BA in Criminal. She later decided to take the LSAT in hopes of becoming a Criminal Defense Attorney, yet quickly learned a score of 125, was more like her ideal weight that an competitive score to attend law school.Already known for her “Brutally Honest” attitude, Katrina quickly familiarized herself with the stage. Katrina Pope started her comedy career in Montgomery AL, opening up for the nationally respected comedian Doug Williams on April 9, 2010. Despite the microphone malfunctions and colorful language, Katrina, was able to make the crowd laugh and look good while doing it. After her first show, she developed her tagline “I just look like this” after getting several sideways compliments from the crowd on her looks. “I just look like this” let everybody know that even though she's cute and prissy, she's been through some trials in her life and she's able to relate to all women. In less than 6 months, Katrina has performed for a sold out crowd in her hometown of Jackson, MI, along with gracing the stage at Uptown Comedy Club, Laughing Skull, Phat Comedy, Atl House of Comedy, Back Stage with Bruce Bruce, Miami Improv, West Palm Improv, (opening act for comedy veteran Marvin Dixon) Laugh Lounge, in New York, Moca lounge in Harlem, NY, and hosting her own comedy room and New Year Eve's Party at the legendary Justin's Restaurant. Oh weather outside is frightful. Eh. But nonetheless, Welcome to the holiday 2017 episode of the Dana Gould Hour, recorded high atop in Los Angeles at Falcon's Lair Recording Studios. We have two incredible interviews and a heapin' helpin' of audio extras for your listening pleasure. First of all, it IS December, and that calls for a year-end recap. Last year, I'm sure you recall how, prior to election day, we all thought we knew how the year was going to turn out. Well it didn't quite work out that way, did it? So joining me at the mic today is none other than Mike Murphy. I'm a Democrat, he's a Republican but outside of that, we walk alike, we talk alike, we even wear our socks alike. Mike has no love for the President, and neither do I, but he has some excellent insight into how the other side approaches this most unique period on out history. Joining Mike and myself is Pete Aronson. Pete has held many an executive position in show bidness, as well as being a very talented writer and all around funny guy in his own right. If you are a fan of Stan Against Evil, you have Pete to thank for it. But more than all of that, he's a smart cookie and I'm eager to get this rolling. We also have Danny Bland with us. Compared to Mike and Pete, Danny is a disreputable hobo. Hobo, I say! And that's why we're friends. Danny is, among other things, the road manager for The Blasters, and, yeah, I'd say he has some stories. He's also the author of the excellent novel In Case We Die which details his oh so fun recovery from heroin and the people he met along the way, Danny, well, you'll hear it. I'd like to have Danny on every month. He is the real deal. For details, tickets and links to all of my live show malarkey, please visit the live appearance page at DanaGould.com. I will be back at one of my favorite clubs in the country The Laughing Skull in Atlanta on Jan 4th, 5th and 6th, and then I'll be back up to San Francisco on Jan 18th, 19th and 20th for good ol' Sketchfest. On Jan 19th at the Marines Memorial Theater, the folks who brought you last year's live staged reading of Plan 9 From Outer Space are reconvening for a live stage reading of The John Travolta classic, The Boy In The Plastic Bubble. It stars not only Stan Against Evil actors like me, Janet Varney, Deborah Baker Jr and Nate Mooney, but also Scott Adsit from 30 Rock, Maria Bamford from Lady Dynamite, and Steven Ogg from The Walking Dead, as well as Bob's Burgers' Ron Lynch. The Boy In The Plastic Bubble. See it. We want to put our germs on you. Lastly, if you are in the DC area, I will be at the Arlington Drafthouse in in Arlington, Virginia on Feb 2nd and 3rd. http://DanaGould.com
Today's show features two amazing guests, author, actor, podcaster, husband, father, men's facial hair advocate John Hodgman is here. Many people first became aquainted with John from his appearances on The Daily Show, but he is so so so much more than that, and he has an excellent new book out now called Vacationland and he is here to discuss that, and so much much more. Also, I was recently in the lovely city of Chicago, Illinois where I was able to speak with the one and only Rich Koz himself, otherwise known as Svengoolie. He of ME-TVs SciFi Saturday night. An American institution and, as America's leading horror movie host, a man I am somewhat if not very jealous of. http://DanaGould.com Speaking of me, which is a great title for a book, you may want to come see me perform my live comedy all professional joke telling show. December 14, 15 & 16, I'll be in San Francisky Ca. at the Punchline. My good buddy Emma Arnold will be joining me at those shows. They're sure to sell out, so get your tickets early. And then show up, and get them oily. Jan 4, 5 & 6 I'll be in my home away from home Atlanta, GA. At the Laughing Skull. One of my favorite clubs in one of my favorite cities, how can you go wrong? Feb. 2 7 3rd I'll be in Arlington, VA. At the Alamo Drafthouse and Cinema, so all my DC friend are encouraged to hie on out, and Feb 22 – 24 finds me in Denver, CO. at The Comedy Works. For details on all of this and more, toddle on over to Dana Gould.com and click on the See Me Live page. Or Calendar or whatever it's called. You'll see it. DanaGould.com And nowwwwwwwwwwww let's do, our filthy business.

Matt Knudsen (Kah-nood-son) was born in Hawaii, raised in the Mid-west and sailed around the world as a merchant marine. After trips to Africa, Europe and The Far East, he eventually put down his sea bag, he picked up a microphone and began performing stand up comedy all across the country. As an actor, you may have seen Matt share the big screen with Oscar winner Sean Penn in the Warner Brothers feature Gangster Squad or you may also recognize him from his appearances in Emmy winning TV shows like Big Love, Boston Legal or Malcolm in the Middle just to name a few. Matt's also been a part of several high profile commercial campaigns for Volkswagen, Apple and GE; which have aired during the Superbowl and The Olympics. As a stand up, he's appeared on Conan, The Late Late Show and Last Call as well as several festivals, including The San Francisco Sketchfest, Bridgetown, Laughing Skull, High Plains and the prestigious Just for Laughs Festival in Montreal; where he was named a "Best of the Fest." His critically acclaimed albums The Comedy Stylings of Matt Knudsen and American are top downloads on iTunes, heard regularly on SiriusXM radio and "Mix droll observation with a dry, almost hypnotic delivery," (The Onion A.V. Club); and with Knudsen's unique style, "The personal feels universal, and the universal feels personal. The only explanation for this phenomenon is that it's all finely crafted comedy from a strong central voice...a great stand up album."
