HARLINGEN, Texas - Veteran broadcaster Ron Whitlock, of Ron Whitlock Reports, recently met up with Dr. Jose Manuel De La Rosa, MD, a member of the U.S.-Mexico Border Health Commission. The meeting took place at the Texas Medical Association's 2023 Border Health Conference, which was held at the Harlingen Convention Center.Whitlock was intrigued to know more about the U.S.-Mexico Border Health Commission, an entity that does not get a lot of media attention.De La Rosa, who is based in El Paso, said the Border Health Commission does important work. Asked to give an example, De La Rosa said:“We talk about the Healthy Border 2030 initiative. It is a process. It takes literally years to get those recommendations (into statute). But those recommendations are established in a format and then the bureaucracy goes to work. When there's an opportunity for funding and they look at equal funding for the border for different areas.“But, where do you begin to allocate funds and why? Oh yeah, somebody somewhere (the U.S.-Mexico Border Health Commission) has an official recommendation here to spend more money on, say, dust cessation, or diabetes, and it trickles through the system. “Mexico is the same way. When you have these bodies of people making recommendations officially through a national and international treaty, it is the law and if nothing else, the bureaucrats in Washington and in Mexico City, understand bureaucracy and move it forward.”Editor's Note: Go to the Rio Grande Guardian International News Service to read the full story. To read the new stories and watch the news videos of the Rio Grande Guardian International News Service go to www.riograndeguardian.com.

It's National Hispanic Heritage Month, so today we're speaking with three leaders working to improve the health and well-being of Hispanic communities in Arizona. Amanda Aguirre is the President and CEO of the Regional Center for Border Health, Floribella Redondo-Martinez is the Executive Director of the Arizona Community Health Workers Association (commonly known as AZCHOW) and Stephanie Parra serves as Executive Director for All in Education. What's perhaps most memorable about this panel is that these leaders aren't only working for Arizona's Hispanic communities, but they are of Arizona's Hispanic communities and work with their communities. Hispanic heritage may be officially “appreciated” for just 30 days each year in the US, but for these three women, there's no question it is the fuel that drives them every single day.

Roughly 45 million immigrants live in the United States today, a fourfold increase since the 1960s. Immigrants face unique challenges obtaining health care services. Some of the challenges are caused by explicit policies designed to limit or exclude immigrants from programs and benefits available to people born in the US. Other barriers relate to household income or the greater likelihood of having limited English proficiency. The health of immigrants in the United States is the topic of today's A Health Podyssey. Arturo Vargas Bustamante is a professor at the UCLA Fielding School of Public Health and faculty director of research at the UCLA Latino Policy and Politics Initiative. For the July issue of Health Affairs - focused exclusively on borders, immigrants and health - Bustamante and coauthors published a paper describing a range of health policy issues raised by the shifting demography of US immigrants. They explored health insurance, health status, and access to care over the past two decades across the immigration and citizenship continuum. They found that inequities between immigrants and US-born residents increased after The Great Recession and began to decline after the implementation of the Affordable Care Act.Listen to Health Affairs Editor-in-Chief Alan Weil interview UCLA's Arturo Vargas Bustamante about the health of immigrants in the US today and how the shifting demographics of the US are affecting health policies.Order your copy of the July 2021 issue of Health Affairs.Subscribe: RSS | Apple Podcasts | Spotify | Stitcher | Google Podcasts
