Julia Gomez: Colcha Embroidery

The Long Thread Podcast

When colonists first left Spain for what became Mexico and the American Southwest in 1598, they came with the continent's first wool sheep. These weren't the famed finewool Spanish Merinos—export of those was punishable by death—but rougher multipurpose Churra sheep. With simple tools, men sheared the sheep, women spindle-spun wool yarn, and men wove plain cloth called sabanilla. In their few spare moments, women embroidered on scraps of fabric with naturally dyed yarn and a simple couching stitch. Embroidery made the fabric warm in the winter, valuable for trade, and beautiful for religious observances. Along with tinwork, wood carving and painting, and pottery, colcha embroidery became one of the folk arts that grew uniquely in the Southwest. When finer materials became available in the early 1800s, colcha embroidery began to decline in practice. Home economics teacher Julia Gomez first learned colcha embroidery in the 1970s in a class at El Rancho de las Golondrinas, a living history museum in Santa Fe. With teaching and family obligations, she didn't delve deeper in the craft until decades later, when she fell in love with this local art form. Learning not only to stitch the colcha embroidery but also prepare the yarn and woven fabric (and even shear a sheep . . . once), she developed passion and expertise for its stories and techniques. Her work has been included in the juried Spanish Market, winning first prize, and is in numerous museum and private collections. In addition to her own embroidery, Julia enjoys teaching and demonstrating, a natural continuation of her decades in the middle-school classroom and years as a docent at the Nuevo Mexico Heritage Arts Museum (formerly the Museum of Spanish Colonial Art). Whether spinning and weaving at El Rancho de las Golondrinas or demonstrating embroidery across the United States and internationally, Julia preserves the beautifully rustic tradition of colcha embroidery. Links Julia Gomez authored “The Art and Tradition of Colcha Embroidery” and created the design “A Colcha Peahen” for PieceWork Winter 2022 (https://pieceworkmagazine.com/library/141964511). Julia demonstrates at the El Rancho de las Golondrinas (https://golondrinas.org/) in Santa Fe, New Mexico, which is open from June through October each year (and in April and May for private tours). Julia demonstrates and teaches at the Nuevo Mexicano Heritage Arts Museum (https://nmheritagearts.org/), where some of her work is also part of the permanent collection. Julia's presentation “A Stitch Out of Time: A Story of Colcha Embroidery in New Spain” at the 2024 Weave a Real Peace (WARP) conference is available to watch on YouTube. (https://youtu.be/6aDO9pV4Hv0?t=165). El Rancho de las Golondrinas hosted Julia's presentation “The Art and Tradition of Colcha Embroidery,” which is available on YouTube. (https://youtu.be/-T2r4u1kRaU) Santa Fe honored Julia as part of National Hispanic Heritage Month in 2021 and created a video (https://youtu.be/Dx1UYT6rj-k) to celebrate her accomplishments. Four Strategies to Uplift People of Hispanic Descent

I'm rebooting my podcast to focus on communicating for change. This week we're going to talk about how to uplift people of Hispanic descent. I share statistics about the prevalence of people of Hispanic descent in the U.S. workforce and why it's important to uplift them.In the U.S., National Hispanic Heritage Month is observed from September 15 to October 15. It's a time to celebrate the histories, cultures, and contributions of Americans whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America. In this podcast I share four strategies to celebrate and support people of Hispanic descent during this month and all year long.1.   Know your termsLet's begin with Hispanic, which means someone descended from Spanish-speaking countries. A Latino or Latina is a man or woman of Latin American descent. Latinx and Latine have emerged as gender-neutral alternatives to Latino or Latina, which encompass Hispanic people from all racial backgrounds and those who identify as LBGTQIA+. The terms “Latinx” or “Latine” are not widely accepted though, especially among older generations.Others prefer to identify themselves by their country of origin, similar to some Native Americans preferring to be called by their Tribe or some Black people disliking the term “BIPOC.” It's more respectful when you name someone's origin instead of lumping them together.Ask people of Latin-American or Hispanic descent what terms they prefer.2.   Avoid cultural appropriationIn a Great British Bakeoff Mexican-themed episode a few years ago, the hosts wore ponchos and sombreros and made insensitive jokes. As we approach Halloween, this is a good time for my annual reminder to not appropriate other cultures.Unless you are Latine, avoid:·      Wearing Mexican or Indigenous traditional costumes or Chola style outfits ·      Getting culturally themed tattoos·      Celebrating Dia de Los Muertos without understanding its deep cultural meaning·      Using Cinco de Mayo as an excuse to party without participating in the cultural elements3.   Celebrate with culturally appropriate activities Celebrating cultural holidays, traditions, and events can be a powerful way to show support. Ask your Latine colleagues or community members for ideas, but avoid singling them out or requiring them to lead or participate. Here are some ideas to consider:·      Feature culturally inspired music, food, films, and art·      Sponsor a book group with selections by Latine authors·      Discuss Latine diversity, equity, and inclusion·      Host an educational session led by Latine professionals ·      Celebrate the contributions of your Latine employees or community members·      Spotlight Latine businesses·      Host celebrations and workshops, encouraging employees to share their own experiences and customsMake sure your activities are respectful and inclusive. Do your research and check in with Latine folks to make it fun and educational. 4.     Offer support to Latine employees in the workplace all year longAny attempt to celebrate National Hispanic Heritage Month will be inauthentic unless you work toward everyday inclusion. With their rich cultural heritage and diverse perspectives, Latine employees contribute significantly to the workforce. However, they face everyday prejudice and need specific support. This support could include:·      Fostering cultural sensitivity and awareness. Educate employees about diverse cultures, traditions, and languages. Break down stereotypes and create a more inclusive atmosphere.·      Addre

National Hispanic Heritage Month is celebrated in the U.S. from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15 each year. The theme for 2024 is “Pioneers of Change: Shaping the Future Together.” Belinda Campos relishes that idea. Between her work as chair of UC Irvine's Department of Chicano/Latino Studies and a faculty member with the Program in Medical Education for the Latino Community in the School of Medicine, Campos takes the future of the Latino population very seriously. She helps lead a network of colleagues who endeavor to foster in students an understanding of Latino history – and how to apply that knowledge in building a brighter future. Campos' research examines how people develop the high-quality relationships associated with better health and longer life. Her team's work has revealed that some classic Latino cultural components, such as an emphasis on positivity and tight-knit families, create a connectivity that can help individuals endure difficult, stressful times. Some of their findings are shared in a recent article in "Greater Good" magazine titled “How to Fully Appreciate Your Loving Relationships,” a collaboration with Jessica Borelli, UC Irvine professor of psychological science. This multifaceted episode of The UCI Podcast includes detailed descriptions of Campos' research and other undertakings in the Department of Chicano/Latino Studies and discussions on the history and future of PRIME-LC and its new offshoot, UC PRIME Pre-Health Pathways; how culture can influence our interpretation of social support in times of stress; and why connecting to our families and communities is good for one's health. “Pioneers,” the music for this episode, was provided by Audionautix via the audio library in YouTube Studio. “Pioneers” is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 license.
