Despite great progress in eliminating malaria in the country, cases of malaria remain high in certain areas of Uganda. Understanding the epidemiology of cases and control is a vital component to a successful malaria mitigation project. Using a cloud-based electronic medical record we have created a pilot project to document and track malaria cases in a central Uganda health center. This type of technology can be utilized in other rural health centers to track malaria and other diseases. Deborah Campbell, an advocate for parental rights in education, discusses the dangers of school-based healthcare centers. She argues that these centers, which provide medical services to all students, infringe on parental authority and violate the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). Campbell emphasizes that while school-based services are protected under IDEA for special education students, school-based healthcare centers are not and can lead to the overreach of parental rights.   School-based health centers funded by Medicaid are raising concerns about parental rights and government overreach. These centers, which provide medical and mental health services to students, are seen as a form of socialism and a violation of parental authority. Additionally, there are concerns about the lack of informed consent and the potential for medical procedures to be performed on children without parental knowledge or approval.   School-based healthcare centers are being implemented in Oklahoma schools, but the details are not being shared with parents. Informed consent is crucial, and parents should be aware of the risks and alternatives associated with these programs. State borders are the new front lines in the nation's abortion battle. On this encore episode of Us & Them, host Trey Kay looks at the evolving geography of abortion. Since a 2022 U.S. Supreme Court decision overturned federal abortion rights, 21 states have either banned or restricted abortion access, including West Virginia. Meanwhile, West Virginia's neighbor, Maryland, is one of 22 states that are protecting abortion rights and expanding access. Kay follows the decision of Women's Health Center of West Virginia to move its abortion services from Charleston to a new clinic just over the border near Cumberland, Maryland. The move was intentional because Western Maryland, like West Virginia, is a so-called abortion desert. The two regions have some deep political and cultural similarities. Western Maryland Republicans say they feel ignored by the overwhelmingly liberal, Democratic legislature in Annapolis. They say the new abortion clinic is not wanted or needed in their part of Maryland, and they blame the clinic's presence on the fallout from Roe v. Wade's defeat.
