En esta entrega, recuperamos la vida y la obra de un físico teórico francés muy activo en los años treinta del siglo pasado, cercano a los grandes debates de la física cuántica europea, militante político antifascista y comunista, que había quedado prácticamente en el olvido. Se trata de Jacques Solomon. Esto es posible gracias a las investigaciones de la física e historiadora colombiana Martha Cecilia Bustamante de la Ossa. Astrofísica e investigadora colombiana, nacida en Calarcá, Quindío, Martha Cecilia Bustamante de la Ossa ha dedicado décadas al estudio de la historia de la ciencia, en especial a los orígenes de la teoría cuántica en Francia. Su trabajo ha sido reconocido por la Academia de Ciencias de Francia gracias a su libro "En los albores de la teoría cuántica" y acaba de publicar en francés una obra monumental, tanto por su amplitud como por la relevancia de sus hallazgos: "Jacques Solomon. El destino trágico de un físico comprometido. Una maleta de manuscritos en la clandestinidad." Una biografía científica, intelectual y política de este físico comunista francés fusilado durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial. Una maleta "impactante" "Es un personaje bastante olvidado en la historia política y científica en Francia. Pero yo tuve la oportunidad de empezar a conocerlo cuando me encontré con su familia. Entrevisté a su esposa, Hélène, la hija del físico Paul Langevin, amigo privado de Einstein y a otros miembros de su familia", cuenta la autora. Estos archivos circularon hasta llegar a la sobrina nieta de Hélène Langevin-Joliot, esposa de Jacques Solomon. Fue quien le confió tres cajas con documentos inéditos, con una maleta muy "impactante". Estaba llena de documentos que "él produjo en la clandestinidad entre 1940 y 1942, cuando estaba organizando la resistencia universitaria y siempre iba con su una maleta con los documentos que iba trabajando. Esto me sorprendió muchísimo porque era un militante comunista, pero al mismo tiempo no dejó de ser investigador", recuerda la científica colombiana, que tardó 30 años en darle forma a este trabajo. La maleta muestra que Solomon investigaba temas especialmente relacionados con las matemáticas "porque él quería corregir ciertos problemas de teoría cuántica, la teoría cuántica relativista. Y él estaba haciéndose muchas preguntas sobre la cuantificación de la relatividad. Entonces él exploraba matemáticamente eso y también trabajó en física nuclear." Un científico que se quedó sin ecuación Si bien no hay una ecuación Solomon o una teoría Solomon, Martha Cecilia Bustamante recuerda que son los cuestionamientos que planteó los que destacan. Por ejemplo, "fue uno de los pocos que durante los años 30 se hizo preguntas sobre la posibilidad de cuantificar la gravitación." Si el científico y militante comunista quedó relegado, es porque murió muy joven y no le dio tiempo de cimentar una teoría o una ecuación que hubiera pasado a la historia. Su compromiso político no ayudó tampoco, según Bustamante de la Ossa. Es muy reveladora la amistad que tuvo con el profesor de filosofía Georges Politzer, "con el que se sentía muy identificado porque además tenían como lugares comunes, eran ambos judíos y originarios de Europa Central o del Este, Hungría y Rumanía." Al conocerlo, Politzer ya era miembro del partido Comunista y es así como Solomon pudo integrarlo. Lo que influenció también su manera de pensar la física, es decir, a la luz del materialismo dialéctico, el marco intelectual comunista. Fueron precisamente sus amigos comunistas que recuperaron estos archivos y los conservaron cuando fue capturado y fusilado por los nazis en 1942. Judío y antifascista, fue arrestado por las "Brigadas especiales" que perseguían a los militantes comunistas tras haber sido denunciado. "Destino trágico" de Jacques Solomon, hijo de un padre que huyó del antisemitismo en Rumanía y que siguió investigando "hasta el final" Unos 84 años después de su asesinato, hay que leer esta biografía como una crónica de nuestra época, que ha reanudado con "la gramática de los años 30". U.S. President Donald Trump has insisted that he will have the “honor of taking Cuba.” Although the administration has not specified what that might mean, following interventions in Venezuela and Iran over the past six months, there is reason to take seriously the possibility of some kind of forceful U.S. action, including military action. Already, a combination of U.S. pressure and the Cuban government's own failures has resulted in unrelentingly dire conditions on the island—leading many to expect some kind of break before long. In recent weeks, two of the sharpest observers of Cuba and U.S. policy toward Cuba have written essays in Foreign Affairs on the choices facing policymakers in both Havana and Washington. Michael Bustamante is chair of Cuba and Cuban-American studies at the University of Miami. And Ricardo Zuniga is a longtime U.S. official who served at the embassy in Havana and helped lead the secret talks that brought the Obama administration's opening to Cuba. And the opposition is too weak, too scattered, and too decimated by exile and imprisonment to be a real political alternative. Trump says 2026 is the year of liberation. But Bustamante argues the hard realities don't match his expectations, and a military invasion is unlikely. A purely economic deal, closer to Obama's 2015 opening, might suit Trump's deal-making instincts, and Cuba's government has signaled it could live with that too. But it would be a betrayal of everything Cuban Americans in South Florida have been promised. And for Marco Rubio, it would be a defining political problem. Here is how the phenomena at the two ranches compare: Shared Frequencies and Energy Spikes One of the most significant connections between the two locations is the 1.6 gigahertz frequency, which is strongly correlated with "high strangeness" at Skinwalker Ranch. When investigators from the TV show Beyond Skinwalker Ranch broadcast a voice over this exact frequency at Rocky Mountain Ranch, they observed a "massive reaction" and "tons of energy" bouncing around the house, suggesting the phenomenon at both locations may interact with or be triggered by the same radio frequency. Voices were also reportedly heard coming through stereo equipment that was turned off. The Feeling of Being Watched: Experiencers at Rocky Mountain Ranch have reported a heavy, uneasy feeling of being watched, a psychological element frequently reported by investigators at Skinwalker Ranch. Documentation and Investigation Because of these similarities, Rocky Mountain Ranch was actually featured in the book "Hunt for the Skinwalker" under a section dedicated to "other hot spots," though the family and location were kept anonymous at the time. Lacy also speaks to University of Miami history professor Michael Bustamante and Andrés Pertierra, a historian of Cuba specializing in post-1959 regime durability, about the crisis unfolding in Cuba.Missing from mainstream news coverage of Trump's attacks on Cuba and U.S. efforts to impose regime change in the region is a recognition of how Trump's policies fit into his attacks on immigrants in the U.S., Bustamante says.“One of the, I think, subtext of why this administration might be keen on government change in Cuba, like in Venezuela, it's not just about being able to plant the flag and say, ‘We buried communism in the Americas. Something that no other president could do,'” Bustamante says. “It's also about, we can deport more people. And we can deport more people. And so how does the Cuban American community react to that? That, I think, is an open question. Something that I haven't seen linked yet to the conversation about regime change, per se.”The Trump administration's strategy is likely to backfire, Pertierra says.“You don't get long-term cooperation stability through fear,” he says. “So I don't think it's actually going to solidify the U.S. position in Latin America.
