Heat, COVID, and Monkeypox are all health threats that are looming this summer. Monkeypox comes from a virus and is rarely fatal, but the World Health Organization just declared it a global health concern. Meanwhile, COVID infections persist even through public health agencies are not tracking it as comprehensively as before. And as the climate changes, illnesses related to heat are becoming more of a concern for farm workers and vulnerable populations. Today on Native America Calling, Shawn Spruce speaks with health experts Dean Seneca (Seneca), CEO of Seneca Scientific Solutions, and Steven Bradfute, Assistant Professor in the UNM Center for Global Health and Department of Internal Medicine.

Iman Nuwayhid's decades of experience as professor of environmental health, dean of the AUB Faculty of Public Health, and this year a visiting professor at Yale University, prompt him to call for a new way to address public health issues. In this interview he links three pivotal historical events in the USA and Arab lands – George Floy's killing in the USA that sparked the Black Lives Matter movement, Mohammad Bouazizi's self-immolation in Tunisia that triggered the Arab uprisings, and young Mohammad Durra's killing by Israeli soldiers in Gaza while he was in his father's arms, which sparked greater Palestinian popular resistance – that compel us to see people's pain, suffering and death as the consequence of deeper and global realities. Beyond isolated health issues that are counted and documented, we must grasp individual pain and death rather as reflections of systemic and trans-generational injustices. All over the world, going back centuries, these include racism, colonialism, occupation, corruption, and incompetent governance, which create “invisible wounds” that must be made visible, appreciated, and treated through political, social, economic and other means.

Throughout the COVID pandemic, people have tried many things to help cope with their emotions and reduce the fear they feel. But that may not always be a good thing. If fear can motivate positive health behaviors, perhaps simple things like washing your hands, then could doing away with fear lead to less healthy behaviors? And, if so, are there better ways to cope with the current pandemic? To shed some light on this topic, we interview Brett Ford with the University of Toronto, who has published a paper in the journal Psychological Science on “Coping with Health Threats.”

MESSAGE SUMMARY: Jesus said, in Mark 2:27-28, “The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath. So the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath.”. Therefore, practice a weekly Sabbath – worship and rest. This practice of the Sabbath is to build back into our lives a time alone with God each day. In Mark 1:35, Mark tells us about Jesus: “And rising very early in the morning, while it was still dark, He departed and went out to a desolate place, and there He prayed.". If Jesus needed to spend time daily alone in prayer, does it not make sense that we need to spend time in daily prayer with God as well? TODAY’S AFFIRMATION: Today, because of I am filled with the Holy Spirit, I will not be controlled by my Compulsions. Rather, I will walk in the Spirit’s fruit of Patience. “The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.” (Galatians 5:22f). SCRIPTURE REFERENCE (ESV): Mark 2:27-28; Mark 1:35; John 16:33; John 10:10. DEVOTIONAL VIDEO MESSAGE SUMMARY: Feeding of the 5000 (St. Andrews Episcopal Church; Ft, Worth, TX) As in Jesus’ “feeding of the 5,000” when Jesus was looking for time away from all the people to be alone with God, God desires that we spend time alone with Him and look to Him and to take what He has given us. No matter where you are or in what context of your life’s involvement that you find yourself, you need to be willing to be broken vessel for use by God for His purposes. After John the Baptizer had been beheaded by King Herod, the Apostles that told Jesus of this news, also, suggested that they get away from the crowds of people into a desolate area in which they could rest and pray. However, a large crowd of people followed Jesus and His Apostles onshore so that when Jesus arrived at the area in which they wished to rest. Jesus had compassion on the people that had followed Him. Therefore, He began teaching, in Mark 6:34, to a very large group. When Jesus’ teachings carried on late into the evening, His Apostles suggested that Jesus send the crowd away into the villages to buy food. Rather, Jesus asked His Apostles to determine how much food was on hand in the crowd; and they determined that they had five loaves of bread and two fish. Jesus blessed this food and, in Mark 6: 42-44, all the crowd ate from this food: “And they all ate and were satisfied. And they took up twelve baskets full of broken pieces and of the fish. And those who ate the loaves were five thousand men.". Living like Jesus and to receive what God knows that we require, we need to move our focus away from our personal desires and perceived needs onto the real needs of others. Mark’s teaching, in Mark 6:34 regarding the miraculous “feeding of the 5,000”, we see that Jesus’ compassion for the people was greater than His personal needs to grieve for the death of John the Baptizer and to rest. Upon His arrival to the intended personal resting spot, Jesus began, immediately, to minister to the people: “When he went ashore he saw a great crowd, and he had compassion on them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd. And he began to teach them many things.”. Like Jesus and to receive what God knows that we require, we need to move our focus away from our personal desires and perceived needs onto the real needs of others. When we move our focus away from ourselves and to a “outward focus”, we become free to hear and to receive from God. TODAY’S AFFIRMATION: Today, Because of who I am in Jesus Christ, I will not be driven by Hatred. Rather, I will abide in the Lord’s Love. “I am the vine; you are the branches. If a man remains in Me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from Me you can do nothing.” (John 15:5). SCRIPTURE REFERENCE (ESV): Mark 6:31; Mark 6:34; Mark 6:41; Mark 6:43; Psalms 46:1-11. Hilarie Gamm of American Workers Coalition is back with us to discuss how the sellout of the American worker to mass foreign labor is actually making us more vulnerable to health epidemics. Not only do we have the travel problems from one million Chinese students, but we have the brain drain problem, which becomes the brain gain of China. China now manufactures many vital medical products. Hilarie explains how the outsourcing problem began with bad immigration policies. While shark attacks, sinkholes, plane crashes, and other “Act of God” insurance nightmares get all the glory of media coverage, there are plenty of other events that account for at least as much—if not more—a share of injuries and deaths. They may not be glamorous or worthy of silver screen treatment, but as causes of hospitalization (and sometimes mortality), the numbers these health threats put up annually certainly qualify them for at least a second thought. So read on and learn about the top ways people wind up in the ER or the morgue, that somehow never get their moment in the spotlight.

Peter Sullivan, founder of Clear Light Ventures, discusses his extensive work in the environmental health community. Sullivan has been an important voice in the environmental health community for many years. His work has been heavily focused in many important areas, such as toxic metals screening, electromagnetic field safety and awareness, as well as the environmental factors that play a role in autism. His company, Clear Light Ventures, seeks to improve overall human health and functioning via the removal of environmental health threats. Sullivan talks about the journey toward his current career in environmental health, discussing his own health issues as well as his children's. He states that with chronic disease, by the time you notice symptoms, it's usually many things not just one thing, that is impacting your health and how you feel. Sullivan talks about all the gadgets, wearables, and other electronic devices that we take for granted and utilize, but what could they be emitting, and how could they be impacting our health? Sullivan discusses mercury poisoning and its effects, as well as the health symptoms and effects of various environmental toxins. Sullivan introduces the ways we can all reduce our exposure to environmental toxins. He explains that there are many things we can do, such as either turning off our smartphones at night, or making sure that they are not sitting right by our beds when we sleep. Something as simple as moving the device away from your bed area could help a great deal. As he explains, dropping exposure can be achieved by distance, the further away we move the device from our bodies, the more we decrease our exposure. Sullivan goes on to discuss sperm damage and potential DNA damage, and how wireless radiation could be one of the big suspects. Sullivan talks about other ways we can keep ourselves safer. We can turn off phone chargers, routers, and anything that is receiving or emitting, that could be causing potential health issues. The environmental toxins expert goes into detail on some of the kinds of meters that are available on the market such as EMF meters and meters that measure wireless radiation, magnetic fields and electric fields, and other factors. All of these, along with dirty electricity, are to be avoided if at all possible. You can also seek out the help of an expert who specializes in the area and can make assessments for you in your home. Sullivan's work on detoxification and EMF has been featured in many current books and periodicals and he is a celebrated authority and expert in the field of environmental toxin exposure.
