RIP Kobe Bryant and his daughter Gianna Bryant. There is a short moment of silence in the beginning to honor their memory. Legends Live Forever. This episode was planned to be fun and light hearted, however, we were informed the unfortunate news of Kobe Bryant passing right before our recording. We have to thank Ale Sharpton for kicking it with us on this suddenly somber occasion and some good people at The Beverly for informing us. Some of Ale's current media outlets include Thrillist.com, Southern Craft Beer Magazine, Craft Beer Magazine, Upscale, and Ebony to name a few. The Kobe Bryant news was developing during this episode’s recording, so please excuse any misinformation. This is the perfect episode for non-beer drinkers who are destined to become converted. We discuss Kobe’s legacy, Ale’s collaboration with New Belgium and creation of his Piano Keys Imperial Stout, beer festivals, the little-known origins of beer, and more. Tell us what your favorite beer is on Facebook and enjoy!
Despite Mother Nature's best efforts, the 16th Annual Atlanta Cask Ale Tasting was a huge success It was an unusually warm day for the 16th Annual Atlanta Cask Ale Tasting and this brought with it some crazy weather. As attendees filled Bold Monk Brewing to sample the cask ales the rain started coming down strong and with about an hour left the hammer dropped. The parking lot flooded and the very well-covered patio was drenched, and finally, the power went out. Fortunately, we had completed our show taping but it did cause some chaos for the Bold Monk and cut a few festival-goers off from their cask ales a bit early. Even with the craziness, I think everyone had a great time. This is our 4th year partnering with Brewtopia Events for ACAT and we kept our tradition going by speaking with festival organizer Owen Ogletree about the event and the ever-changing world of cask ales. We also spoke to a few of the breweries currently under construction in Georgia that we hope to see debut in 2020. The team from Social Fox Brewing is ready to bring some brews to Norcross. A few of Georgia's Next Breweries Outrun Brewing | Founders Josh Miller and Ryan Silva (formerly of Decatur, GA's Three Taverns) join us to discuss the plans for their retro 80s-themed brewery coming to Stone Mountain. We did confirm there will be an Outrun arcade machine at the brewery. Sabbath Brewing | Founder Jeff Oparnica joins us to talk about his struggles fighting through zoning laws with the City of Atlanta, his plan to ferment 100% in oak vessels, and brewing raw ales. Social Fox Brewing & Storey Time Construction | We didn't have enough mics to get the whole team on with us but they all came out to support the cause. Mike Greene joined us to represent Team Social Fox to talk about their brewery coming to Norcross. Anthony Storey joins us from Storey Time Construction as well to discuss building out their brewery and some others that are in the works. (Storey Time is one of BGR's super awesome sponsors.) The Beer List A few favorites from the festival: Best End Hawker Hornet ESB The Eighth State Arcus | Sour Ale with blueberry, lemon, cinnamon, and marshmallow Rainy Day Brewery Double O Buzzin' | Coffee and vanilla Milk Stout with lactose StillFire Brewing Olde Chief Inspector '19 | Traditional English Barleywine The 16th Atlanta Cask Ale Tasting offered up over 50 casks including ESBs, Emglish Milds, Barleywines, and plenty of pastry stouts. ICYMI: Previous ACAT episodes 15th Annual Atlanta Cask Ale Tasting with Bold Monk Brewing, Halfway Crooks, and Schoolhouse Brewing 14th Annual Atlanta Cask Ale Tasting with Banyan Roots (now Best End Brewing), Line Creek Brewing, and Split Batch Brewery 13th Annual Atlanta Cask Ale Tasting with Good Word Brewing, New Realm Brewing, and Variant Brewing

The Classic City Brew Fest in an Athens institution. In its 24th year, a lot has changed since organizer Owen Ogletree founded the event. Last year, the festival made a big switch amid the flood of "regular" beer festivals and went to a primarily cask ale format. This year, we catch up with Akademia Brewing to see what the last 12 months held for them. Their beer is available in cans now, and they've recently remodeled and added a larger lounge to their brewpub. Owners Matt Casey and Morgan Wireman join us to fill us in. We also catch up with a soon-to-be brewery in the Normaltown neighborhood of Athens. Athentic Brewing gives a nod to their city and their logo (shaped like a guitar pick) pays homage to the rich musical history of Athens, home to bands like REM, THe B-52s, Drive by Truckers, and Widespread Panic.
We visited the Fourth Annual Festival of the Lost Township in Raytown, Missouri. Brought to you by Crane Brewing and Raytown Three Trails Kiwanis, the Festival of the Lost Township welcomed 89 commercial brewers, distillers, cideries, roasters and vendors. A wide selection of food trucks and 45 home brewers with Brewtopia rounded out the festival. Find out who won our Best in Show and our favorite part of this craft beer festival.
On this episode of Bev Boyz, Jeff and David are sampling beers from all over the Seattle area including Stoup, Fremont and Elysian! Later, Carson Stephens from Funny Fire joins the Boyz to begin the brewing process for the Funny Fire Brewing x Bev Boyz collaboration beer for Brewtopia 2018!
We're talking all about Athens-area beers with Chris Herron, CEO of Creature Comforts Brewing Company, Brian Roth of Southern Brewing Company and Owen Ogletree from Brewtopia Events. Owen was kind enough to invite us to broadcast from the 22nd annual festival, and it was awesome as expected. The guys from Scofflaw also crashed the party too! Have a great week, check out beerguysradio.com, Facebook, Instagram and Twitter...and DRINK LOCAL!
What an amazing event! If you haven't been to one of the 13 iterations of the Atlanta Cask Ale Tasting, then you're missing out. Owen Ogletree, owner of Brewtopia.com, puts on the event every year at the Prado in Sandy Springs. This year's version featured more than 60 casks of unique and creative beers from Georgia, national and international brewers! We took advantage of our attendance at ACAT to drink some amazing beers (of course), but also to get updates on a few breweries and brewpubs in planning. First on the list was Mitch Steele. The former brewmaster for Stone Brewing is working with his partners to open up a brewpub on the Atlanta beltline sometime late in 2017. We spoke with him about the plans, and the reason why they picked Atlanta. Next, Owen took some time out of his busy day to talk about casks. What they are, the history involved, and why they are so much more nuanced than "normal" tapped beers. In our third segment, we speak to Matt and Lauren Curling, the husband and wife team behind Roswell's Variant Brewing Company. Also planning a 2017 launch, we talk about how they got started in craft beer (hint: it wasn't Matt at first!) and the trials and tribulations of starting up a new brewery. We also talk with our great sponsors, Your Pie Perimeter, about their upcoming Second Anniversary party. Ryan Skinner and Todd DeMatteo joined us in the fourth segment. Ryan and Todd are planning a new brewpub, Good Word, in craft beer starved Gwinnett County. We talked about starting up a new brewpub in downtown Duluth, as well as their idea for bringing the comforts of home to a brewpub. Finally, we were lucky enough to grab two of the world's foremost experts on cask ales. Des de Moor is a London-based beer judge and writer; and Steve Hamburg is a Chicago-area writer and beer judge. Both are cask experts, and we talk about the cask movement in the United States and what makes a great cask ale. Next week, we'll be cidering it up with the folks behind Mercier Orchards. Thanks for listening, and don't forget...drink local!
Oktoberfest may be over in Munich, but it's on our mind this time of the year. With that in mind, we talked to Max Lager's owner John "JR" Roberts and Brewtopia's Owen Ogletree. Both are experts in the field, and we talked, drank, and learned more about Martzens, Festbiers and all sorts of styles popular this time of the year. Owen just returned to the states from a trip to Munich, and he shares his experiences with us. It's also the weekend of the Great American Beer Festival. We will be there, and so we talked to John about the GABF...and some tips on surviving! Truck and Tap's Beers of the week: Bell's Octoberfest Cigar City Good Gourd Funky Buddha Sweet poe-tay-toe Wild Heaven Autumn Defense Headlines (brought to you by Your Pie - Perimeter) Monday Night Brewing has a new facility in planning. It will be dedicated to brewing sours and barrel aging. It's to be on the SW side of Atlanta, along the beltline. We got the scoop - read and listen here. Tim's Whales of the Week: Three Taverns Hoplicity cans Creature Comforts Epicurious Alabama - Get your Orpheus Brewing beers! While they were available in limited numbers/places, they will be fully launching by next week. Beer Guys Announcement Project BGR is coming! Our new podcast will feature interviews from national brewers and beer experts....and some cool things we're interested in. Stay tuned for the official launch, coming soon! On next week's show, we're talking to Terrapin Beer Company's Spike Bukowski. And we'll have a recap of GABF...that is, if we can remember what happened. Cheers, have a great weekend, and don't forget to DRINK LOCAL.
