Buh-bye to Dry January, hot sauce seltzer, and rising beer prices

We made it to FOUR HUNDRED episodes.  Whew. This week marks the 400th episode of Beer Guys Radio. Crazy. We've been pretty steady with the show since we launched in January 2016, and here it is 2024. Thanks for joining us for the ride.We open up with a little WTF action as Truly launched a Hot Wing Sauce Hard Seltzer "just in time" for the Super Bowl. Maybe it would pair well with our cellared Hormel Chili Cheese Beer?Just like everything else the average price for a case of craft beer is up, and I learned there are several categories of craft beer at retail, all the way up to Apex Craft.Bids are in for Anchor Brewing and it's expected a winner will be announced soon. The Anchor Union is still in the mix but no word on where they stand in the race.We share some thoughts on Dry January and hop water, now that it's all behind us, and thoughts on what breweries can do to keep people coming in during those challenging months. We definitely support giving your body a break, but we sure don't want to hurt our favorite bars and breweries. In related news, NA beer is the NA beverage of choice (next to NA wine and spirits) for Dry January. We take a little side venture into hot sauce chat, and about if listening to a book counts as reading a book.More closures. So many more closures. Buffalo Bayou Brewing got locked out of their building for non payment of rent. The CEO says he's trying to come back. We ponder the likelihood of that happening. You gotta have a bold strategy to pull off a Lazarus move.AB InBev continues to close down craft breweries it acquired. But it's keeping some of the brands alive at its other breweries. Let's see what they have left when it's all said and done. Finally, a shout out to our friends Jason and Leslie from Orpheus Brewing. They're having a going away party this weekend ahead of a move to Amsterdam where they'll start up a much smaller brewing operation, The Hollows. We wish them luck!Beers of the WeekScofflaw Juice Quest (Hazy IPA)Three Taverns Decatur 200 (Cold Pale Ale)Dogfish Head / Rodenbach - Crimson Cru (Red Ale, blend of Rodenbach Grand Cru and “an off-centered red ale” infused w/sumac & sweet orange peel.)Bearded Iris Pep Talk (Lager)Thanks for listening to Beer Guys Radio! Our beer fest tour continues...Last weekend we took our happy selves to Duluth, GA for the Les Bon Beer Festival hosted by our good friends at Good Word Brewing.Good Word always puts on a great event and this highly-curated selection of brewers and oyster farmers was no exception.  We enjoyed a variety of saisons, mixed fermentation brews, and oysters as we chatted with some of the events participants. We always love to learn more about things we don't know about.  Ed Mera of Mera Brothers Oysters joins us to drop some general knowledge on oysters, the impact of hurricanes on oysters, green gills, and merroir.Averie Swanson from Keeping Together tells us about her brewery and the journey from Texas, to Chicago, to New Mexico while educating us all on mixed culture beers.  We get a shot of Underberg to keep our digestion in check, and discuss the wonders of Malort. There are a few people we know well and always have good conversations with.  Orpheus Brewing's Jason Pellett is one of those people.  Jason's been on the show a handful of times over the years and was one of first guests wayyy back in 2016.  Jason recently closed his taproom in Atlanta and is in the process of moving to Amsterdam where he'll open a much smaller brewery, The Hollows, thanks in part to more friendly brewing laws.  We talk with Jason about these changes, the "protections" of the three-tier system, and why everything is so damn expensive these days.  FYI... even though the taproom is closed you can still find Orpheus beers at retail and on draft thanks to their partnership with Bevana. Thanks for listening to Beer Guys Radio! The last time I was in Colorado was for the Great American Beer Fest back in 2016.  I know how much Georgia's craft beer scene has changed since then and no doubt it's the same for Colorado.  Outside of the festival we visited awesome spots like Mockery, Trve, Crooked Stave, Great Divide and a few more.  I need to get another visit soon to try some of the stuff I missed last time.Jagged Mountain's Chad Bratt and Executive Director of the Colorado Brewers Guild Shawnee Adelson  join us on the show this week.  We learn about the challenges facing Colorado's brewers and a couple of fun events like the recent Collaboration Fest and upcoming Colorado Pint Day, and protecting good beer laws. The Beer ListOf course we have some Colorado beers on deck with Weldwerks Juicy Bits IPA and Odyssey Beer Works I'm Not Dead Vienna lager. We got some sad news this week that one of our favorite local spots Orpheus Brewing is closing it's taproom.  We opened their The Bridge (Wild Ale with botanicals) to mourn the loss. Thanks for listening to Beer Guys Radio! Talking today's hot news with some cool people UPDATE: Things move quickly in the world of craft beer.  In this episode we discuss Brewery X's purchase of Modern Times.  Only Brewery X ended up backing out of the deal and now Maui Brewing purchased them.  Our details are out of date, but the general discussion still holds up. Rather than featuring a specific beer or brewery on this week's show we decided to invite some friends in to share a few beers and talk about some of the happenings in the beer world today.  The burning issues.  Like PBR's 1,844 can pack.  Important stuff, ya know. Jason Pellett, founder and brewmaster at Atlanta's Orpheus Brewing joined us.  We've enjoyed Jason's beer's since before the brewery opened.  Sitting on the patio sipping geuze and talking all things wild.  Or maybe at a secret tapping at somewhere it shouldn't have been tapped, but I'm not gonna tell if you don't. The one and only Bill Boyer came along as well.  Bill's an old homebrewing friend and he is on fire in the homebrew circuit.  His brews have earned him over 200 medals in competitions, with 100+ just this year.  His homebrewer is called Beer and Fire and encompasses beer, cider, mead, and hot sauce.  He also grows his own peppers.  Bill is a regular Renaissance man. Hot topics this week In addition to huge packages we also talk about the sale of Stone Brewing and Modern Times, and Melvin pondering a "strategic partner."  We discuss the horrible news out of New Jersey and the new constraints on brewers there.  Bill shares a bit about mead and cider and homebrew competitions before we run out of time.  We'll have him back in the future to talk more on these subjects. Sexism has always been the Craft Beer industry but why are we talking about it now? It all started with a simple question posted on Instagram by a female brewer in Massachusetts, "What Sexist Comments Have You Experience?" A match was lit and a firestorm of stories from all over the nation poured in to the inbox of @ratmagnet. She shared each of them and the curtain has been pulled back on sexism in this industry and breweries are scrambling to come to terms with this harsh reality that women are all too familiar with. I start with speaking to Beth Demmon (@delightedbite) a food and beer journalist and advocate for women's rights where we discuss her most recent article on this topic-Link to Article- https://vinepair.com/articles/sexism-assault-beer-industry-ratmagnet/ Next we speak with owner and brewmaster from Orpheus Brewing on his take as a male ally and what he does in his establishment to ensure the safety of women in the brewery and why all breweries should be speaking out against sexism in this industry. Next up is Jen Blair, (@underthejenfluence) she is a very prominent figure in the industry and an advocate for women in the beer industry everywhere. We discuss her very public resignation letter from a well-known brewery in Atlanta, how she took a stand and how employees and consumers can do the same. Link to Jen's Beer Judge Training is here- https://underthejenfluence.beer/beer-judge-training. Finally we speak with good friend of the podcast and Executive director of the Georgia Craft Brewers Guild, Joseph Cortez. We discuss his reaction to these accusations, what the guild is doing to address these issues, ways to get more women involved in the guild and what he hopes will happen moving forward to make sure sexism in the craft beer industry is not tolerated moving forward. Social Fox recently released their first beers in cans and has more in the pipeline.  They recently released Straight Outta Norcross, a West Coast IPA, to give visitors a break from all the haze out there.  Gold Belt Golden Ale also offers a drinking beer when you just want to take it easy and not overthink what's in your glass.  On the opposite side of that coin they've also released some Oenobeers, a beer-wine hybrid, and plan to brew more of those as well. Crooked Run Brewing is more than just beer When Crooked Run Brewing opened co-founders Jake Endres and Lee Rogan were just 25, making them the youngest brewery owners in Virginia. They've had great growth in the last seven years. The duo has opened a second location, started making wine, and launched their Native Culture sub-brand offering wild and spontaneous ales using Virginia ingredients. Endres joined us on the show this week to talk about the journey. We've got more hot coolship talk this week, a staple of their Native Culture series. They released their first Lambic-style beers in late 2020 and will release a Geuze-style later this year. Coolships, wine, and fruity seltzers In addition to beer they've also began making "low-intervention wine", also called natural wines, that use less or no additives in the process. Crooked Run has also got into the seltzer game, making massively overfruited versions. (How did we get here? Wasn't seltzer supposed to be a lighter, lower calorie alternative to beer??? Now we're overfruiting them and even making smoothie versions? Sheesh.) Like many breweries, Crooked Run has taken a hit from the pandemic. But shifting into more packaged product to go has helped them weather through. Enders is excited for what they've got planned this year, with big releases from the Native Culture series, more wine, and yes... even more of those fruit-filled seltzers. Somerville Chocolate in Massachusetts steeped their nibs in fermenting beer and then dried them out to make bars. When it comes to our money, how should we measure our progress? For someone out there who isn’t into personal finances at all, it might be tempting to measure your financial success by what they’re able to purchase, or even by the size of their paycheck. But we know those are poor and inaccurate measuring sticks, and this is why net worth is so important. Regardless of where you are on your financial journey, now is the time to start tracking your net worth. It’s a really important snapshot of how we’re doing at the moment, but at the same time it’s not the end all be all. We talk about net worth’s shortcomings, how we track our net worth, and then finally how to grow your net worth in today’s episode! Other topics we discuss are the return of the MLB and NBA, how Atlanta United (and the Braves) did the most Atlanta thing ever, and Madden ratings. Our featured beers are a Halfway Crooks x Burial collab (Control Data), a fruited sour ale called Magnetic North from Wild Mind Artisan Ales, and the Disassemblage imperial stout from Orpheus Brewing. Cheers!

RUN This week is the first part of our recap of Northside Orthopedic Hospital Half Marathon Weekend Powered By Jeff Galloway.  It is a weekend that is near and dear to our hearts!  It kicks off with Barb’s 5K, as in Barb Galloway, Jeff’s wife.  Her race is a great way to start off the weekend and we tell you all about the race itself through Atlanta’s Piedmont Park, the race swag, and the post-race celebration at Orpheus Brewing!   EAT Bantam Pub is really close to the Atlanta Beltline and it was a recommended by a friend of the show!  They were serving brunch when we finished the 5K and it did not disappoint.  They have a frittata and a country-fried steak entree that we really enjoyed!  It is a nice small place with really friendly bartenders and staff.  We can’t wait to go back and try the burgers and other items on their regular menu!  We tried a couple of their original cocktails, so stay tuned for a Quick Bite featuring these beverages. DRINK Bantam Pub was near the Beltline and our next stop was right on the Atlanta Beltline.  We headed to New Realm Brewing Company.  We pass it each on the race course of the half marathon, so we wanted to explore the beer menu that tempts us right around miles 4-5 on race day.  They have a huge menu of original beers, so we each had flights!  In the flights, we found a wide range of styles and a couple of favorites we’d go back and have a pint of for sure.  It is a huge and beautiful space that is ideal for a party. Welcome to Atlanta, Georgia and the 5th Anniversary of the Jeff Galloway Half Marathon Weekend! RUN This episode features Barb's 5K, the first race in our weekend celebrating the 5th Anniversary of one of our favorite races.  We also got the chance to run with some great people from the Extra Mile Podcast Group. If you have not listened to the Extra Mile Podcast or Extra Mile Podcast: Galloway Edition, you are missing out. Kevin Gwin is the host of these two awesome podcasts about running and this group is so motivational.  We ran through Piedmont Park.  Although it was wet, raining, and very cold compared to Florida weather normally, we had a blast with these people and in the beautiful setting of the park. Barb Galloway even met us at the finish and congratulated us on finishing the race.  We loved every minute! We hope you'll join us next year! EAT Whenever we come to Atlanta, we make it a tradition to eat at Trader Vic's.  Home of the original Mai Tai, their food is also an amazing taste of the South Pacific.  We had the Pupu Platter called Cosmo Tidbits on their menu.  Ribs, perfectly battered and fried shrimp and delicious ribs from their unique wood-fired ovens that you can see as you sit and sip on your Mai Tai.  We also had their delicious Morel Mushroom appetizer.  It is a must-have from their menu.  These appetizers are why we almost never get to the main entree.  We also had a Hot-Buttered Rum as part of our dessert.  Buttery, cinnamon, and sweet flavors warm you from head to toe.  (I know this is the eating portion, but it was so good, I couldn't help but mention it.)  If you come to Atlanta, come to Trader Vic's.  Their entrees are also dynamite, but their appetizers are shareable and very filling.   DRINK Right after Barb's 5K, we went to Orpheus Brewing.  They hosted a special event celebrating Barb's 5K and letting us try their tasty beer.  We had a Stout and a couple of sours they had on draft in a beautiful snifter commemorating the race weekend.  We hope they continue this tradition for years to come because the after party had tasty beer and great runners to hang out with and celebrate. We’re joined by Doug Veliky of Revolution Brewing, just because we wanted a friend to share these with. But Doug shares with us a bunch of Revolution updates, and spoils our dreams on why we’ll likely never see a canned Gueuze. Orpheus Brewing and The Woodlands talk sour and wild beers Wild and sour beers continue to grow in popularity.  From "simple" sour beers like Berliner Weisse and Gose to complex, spontaneously fermented ales with funky, earthy, cheesy character.  There's a huge variety out there. When you think of SweetWater Brewery, you may not think of sour beers - but you should.  Nick Burgoyne, Lead Brewer and Blender at SweetWater's The Woodlands focuses on brewing wild, sour, funky and barrel-aged beers.  He recently won a Silver Medal for Cambium (an American Wild Ale) at the US Open Beer Championship. Orpheus Brewing opened in Atlanta in 2014.  Brewmaster and President Jason Pellett had a goal to introduce an approachable, sour beer that anyone could afford and his Atlanta (Tart Plum Saison) did just that.  In the past 4 years, Orpheus has brewed many more sour beers, and recently won Bronze for Lambic-style Ales at the Great American Beer Fest. Burgoyne and Pellett join us this week to talk about the adventure of expanding the acceptance of sour beers.  We talk simple kettle sours like Berliner Weisse and Gose, and more complex sours like Lambic and Gueze.   We also discuss the challenges facing American brewers as they mimic these styles and try to name them without offending traditional Belgian brewers, and how that brought about the move towards the Méthode Traditionnelle under the guidance of HORAL (High Council for Artisinal Lambic Beers).  As we sip through several beers, the conversation moves to the process of traditional spontaneous brewing and blending sour beers. The show was taped at SweetWater Brewery during ZCON Atlanta's brewery night.  We talk with Z Car Club Association President Chris Karl about Z Cars, the club and ZCON - their annual national convention. This episode is part of a series of interviews recorded in December at Salud Sourfest, an annual beer festival hosted in Charlotte, North Carolina. The event attracts a curated selection of skilled, sour-making breweries from around the country, with a heavy presence from the Mid-Atlantic region. Sourfest represents a kind of festival that's rapidly growing in popularity, where attending breweries often run in the same circles or share a like-minded ethos, making for a special occasion for attendees instead of an event with any and every brewery that would care to send a keg. As drinkers sipped on a variety of wild and sour beers, I was able to pull a collection of brewers and business owners aside for brief conversations about their companies, specialties and what's catching their eye in the industry. This episode and others run about 20 to 25 minutes, so we had time to dig in a little bit, but the interviews are a bit more focused than the free-ranging talks you hear most weeks here on the podcast.

"Drinkin' Beer." It's a beer that you always keep stocked in the fridge or cooler, ready to go after a hard day of work or relaxing at the beach or a party. Red Hare Brewing Company aims to be the craft beer that's stocking that fridge or cooler. We talked to Roger Davis, Managing Partner and Bobby Thomas, Head Brewer of Red Hare on the show. We talked about their start, born out of the recession of 2008-09, and the importance of canning their offerings.   Truck and Tap's beers of the week? Red Hare's SPF 50/50 "IPR," an India Pale Radler with grapefruit soda. And their newest creation, Cotton Tail Orange Creamsic-Ale, an orange/vanilla take on their pale ale.  Tim's Whales of the week are Orpheus Brewing's Even The Furies Wept. We sampled this earlier in the year on the show, and now it's available. Also, Three Taverns Night On Ponce IPA, which is their second can release.  The Hot list includes the Georgia launch of Hi-Wire Brewing, as well as Wish You Were Beer's third anniversary week. Details at beerguysradio.com. Next week? We'll be talking all things bottle shops with Hop City and Whole Foods. Join us on the socials for even more beer happenings across the southeast!
