A former chair of the BA's supply chain subcommittee has advice for navigating today's challenges. Special Guest: Mitch Steele.
Like any good parable, the "David and Goliath" self-mythology of the American craft brewing industry in the '80s and '90s was illuminating, compelling — and maybe a bit reductive, too. In Episodes 33 and 34, we examined this us-versus-them dynamic from the perspective of one of the “thems,” Keith Villa, who created the Blue Moon Brewing Company from within the Coors colossus in 1995. Today, we're coming at it once again through the eyes of New Realm Brewing Co. cofounder and brewmaster Mitch Steele, who did a substantial stretch, semi-concurrent to Villa's at Coors, at Big Beer's biggest and baddest "Goliath" of all: Missouri's pre-InBev Anheuser-Busch. After starting his career in a California brewpub, Mitch eventually wound up in St. Louis towards the end of the 20th century on a skunkworks-style R&D team tasked with brewing up answers to those pesky “microbrews” that would somehow satisfy distributors in the mighty red network, the American drinking public, and August Busch the Third himself — no mean feat. Would creative extensions on the premium Michelob line do the trick? What about a new brand named for A-B's hop farm in northern Idaho? You'll have to listen on to find out. I am Director of Brewing Operations at Sonder Brewing outside of Cincinnati, OH. I am a former high school and university educator, and I have been making beer for a living for over a decade. My goal here is to give a behind-the-scenes look into the craft brewing industry, and to share any knowledge I have. I am not the perfect brewer, but I am always pushing myself to get better and to learn more. Our goal in the brewhouse is to always aim for the bullseye, knowing we will never hit it. That mantra keeps us focused on continual growth, and helps us appreciate the journey of improving as brewers.
A note from John Holl: "This week I'm pleased to share with you a recent episode of the Brewer to Brewer Podcast, which runs on the All About Beer channel. Shaun O'Sullivan of 21st Amendment interviews Mitch Steele of New Realm Brewing. The duo discuss Steele's career and he shares insight into his time working for Anheuser-Busch at the dawn of craft beer and the movements made to address and combat the upstarts. It's a fascinating look into business and history and I hope you enjoy listening to this conversation as much as I did."

Hey Folks! We ventured out last week to the Atlanta Cask Ale Tasting and spoke to a handful of really cool people. A bit of a change up from our usual ACAT shows where we typically have a few of Georgia's soon-to-be breweries. Maybe a sign of the times, but this year we didn't find anyone new in attendance. No worries, we still have some great guests. Owen Ogletree, festival organizer and owner of Brewtopia Events joins us to talk about cask ales, the festival, and beer tours. Mitch Steele of New Realm Brewing sits with us for a spell to chat more on cask ales, their 5th anniversary, and whether or not he's forming a brewers band in Georgia. Charlie Meers of Magnanimous Brewing joins us. We just met Charlie at the event but we have several mutual friends that said Charlie was cool and we needed to chat wit him. So we did. Wrapping up the show Joseph Cortez, Executive Director of the Georgia Craft Brewers Guild shares some of what the Guild is up to this year and Steve Hamburg, Chicago's Cask King joins to share his love for all things cask ale. The event was awesome, the people were awesome, and the show is awesome. So much awesome.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

"I spent a few days in Georgia earlier this month, visiting breweries that had long been on my list but current global events kept me away. Chief among the breweries was New Realm, an impressive outfit that was founded by a trio of brewing professionals with long careers in beer. On the brewing side is Mitch Steele. He's one of those first name club brewers who has spent his tenure creating intriguing and classic recipes, pushing the boundaries of hops, and working to bringing forgotten or shaddowed styles into the light. At New Realm he is overseeing several breweries and a distiller, including the main location where we sat at the bar on a recent afternoon drinking lager and IPA. It's a wide ranging conversation that eventually turned to Stone Brewing, where he spent a decade as the brewmaster. That brewery recently sold to Sapporo Brewery, a move that shocked and saddened a lot of beer fans. Although he's not there anymore and hasn't been for some time, Stone is part of his history and Mitch shares some thoughts."- John Holl This Episode is Sponsored ByHarpoon BreweryDid you know that Harpoon IPA is New England's Original IPA?Brewed in Boston and Vermont for decades by their Employee Owners.Hoppy, crisp, perfectly balanced.Harpoon IPA: New England's Original IPA.For more Drink Beer, Think Beer or to check out Beer Edge follow us on Twitter @thebeeredge and visit All About Beer. While other 90s brewpubs have disappeared, Iron Hill Brewery only gets stronger Do you remember the brewpub boom of the 1990s? It seemed like there was one on every corner. John Harvard's and Hops were a couple favorites in Atlanta, and Sundays on the patio of Atlanta Beer Garten listening to 99x's Resurrection Sunday still conjures very fond memories. All of those brewpubs are long gone, along with many others founded during the 90s boom. Beating the odds, Mark Edelson's Iron Hill Brewery is still going strong, and getting stronger. Edelson joined us on the show this week to talk about what gave his brewpub staying power over the years and what's in store for the future. We talk about his days as a member of the board at the Brewers Association alongside the likes of Mitch Steele, Ken Grossman, Peter Bouckaert, and Mr. Charlie Papazian. He tells us about the challenges of defining a "craft brewery" and shares his thoughts on the biggest challenges today's brewers face. Iron Hill has the impressive distinction of winning medals at the Great American Beer Festival for 20+ consecutive years included being named Best Brewpub. As the brewery approaches their 25th anniversary this November Edelson has plans for some big beers, he reveals the "big one" on the show this week. We chat about their new production brewery in Exton, PA and their entry into the distribution market, as well as recent events at their newest pub right here in Atlanta. Best of 2019 - Mitch Steele, New Realm BrewMaster (ex- Stone BrewMaster)MITCH STEELEBrewmaster, COO and Co-Founder, New Realm Brewing Co.Mitch Steele is a true renaissance man — widely respected for his award-winning talent brewing great, innovative beer for just the right time (and times). Authoring IPA: Brewing Techniques, Recipes and the Evolution of India Pale Ale and the “Hoptripper” blog, he has been invited to judge many national and international beer festivals. He studied the craft and art of brewing science at the University of California Davis. Studying turned into home brewing and, later on in 1988, he made his passion a profession and eventually worked his way up to the title of brewmaster. If he could have a beer with anyone in the world, it would be an IPA with Stephen King, mainly because of his writing and love of Rock-n-Roll and beer. It should be noted that Steele has a 50,000- song music collection and is a guitar-rocking band member himself.https://newrealmbrewing.com/Craft Beer Storm Website: www.craftbeerstorm.com If your Company, Hotel or Restaurant wants to book a CraftBeer Weekend or Craft Beer Evening for your guests or employees send an email to Michael@craftbeerstorm.com Linked In: https://www.linkedin.com/in/craft-beer-storm-podcast-30776075/Subscribe to Craft Beer Storm Podcast iTunes: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/craft-beer-storm/id1438117278?mt=2*** A Top 20 Podcast in Food on iTunes ***Michael Potorti is the Host of Craft Beer Storm and Founder/Brewer at Beara Brewing Co. in Portsmouth, NH*** Interested in starting your own brewery? If you brew IPA, you’ve probably read Mitch Steele’s book on the subject. His storied brewing career has taken him from from positions as Brewmaster at Anheuser-Busch and Stone to his newest venture as Brewmaster at Atlanta’s New Realm Brewing. This latest chapter has posed one of the biggest creative challenges he’s faced—designing an entire beer program from scratch. In this episode, Steele discusses creating beers to style that still contain unique character, explores the structure of their hoppy lager, admits to goofing on their first IPA releases and discuses how they made recipe and brand changes to satisfy their customers, cracks the code on hazy IPA and discusses the ways they’ve designed and brewed that style, delves into the resurgence and reinvention of West Coast IPA, shares their innovation process from small scale evaluation brews on up, and talks about their latest tests in the hard seltzer space with what works and what doesn’t. This episode is brought to you by: G&D Chillers (https://gdchillers.com): As the brewing industry’s premier choice for glycol chilling, G&D Chillers has set the standard on quality, service, reliability and dedication to their customer’s craft. For three whole days, we are the masters of our domain - which is the expansive festival hall in Denver, Colorado for the Great American Beer Festival. We’re double dipping on this episode as we combine interviews from the festival floor with beer reviews and a weekend recap from the comforts of our hotel room. We stop short of two hours on this one, but it’s filled with takes on our favorite beers from the fest, a recap of Illinois medal winners, and highlights from drinking around Denver all weekend. Also, hear about a few surprise breweries coming to FoBAB, a beer that was literally aged on grunge, how the guy who wrote the book on IPAs feels about the haze craze, the actual best chili in Cincinnati, what it means to win it all at Hunaphu’s Day, and which brewery makes the most Seinfeld references. It’s gold, listener! Gold! Here’s to feeling good all the time. In this long-awaited sequel, we are filling our meters with GABF excitement as we talk about the upcoming fest while drinking some local medal winners. We sample four Chicagoland beers that have previously earned medals - and deservedly so. There’s also a lot of tips for the Great American Beer Festival for 2019, including our Illinois brewery picks, which new-to-us breweries we’re most excited about, and all the other breweries that can’t be missed. Also, we develop an emergency plan in the case of a skitching, plead for more care in pug diets, resist feeling the Mitch Steele, and seek the weirdest weird beers. #rebootALF Illinois Medal Winners Reviewed Maplewood Brewing Co. - Fat Pug (Oatmeal Milk Stout) - 2017 Bronze in Oatmeal Stout Smylie Brothers Brewing Co. - Purple Line (Wheat w/ hibiscus, blueberry, and blackberry) - 3-time medal winner Piece Brewery & Pizzeria - It’s Your Fault Alt (Altbier) - 2017 Silver in German-style Altbier Eris Brewery and Cider House - Foiken Haze (New England-style IPA) - 2018 Bronze in Juicy or Hazy India Pale Ale

MITCH STEELEBrewmaster, COO and Co-Founder, New Realm Brewing Co.Mitch Steele is a true renaissance man — widely respected for his award-winning talent brewing great, innovative beer for just the right time (and times). It should be noted that Steele has a 50,000- song music collection and is a guitar-rocking band member himself.https://newrealmbrewing.com/Subscribe to Craft Beer Storm Podcast iTunes: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/craft-beer-storm/id1438117278?mt=2Michael Potorti is the Host of Craft Beer Storm and Founder/Brewer at Beara Brewing Co. in Portsmouth, NHMichael PotortiFounder/BrewerHost of "Craft Beer Storm" Podcastmichael@craftbeerstorm.commichael@bearairishbrew.com*** Come visit our brewery for some delicious local craft brew! ***Beara Brewing Co.2800 Lafayette RoadPortsmouth, NH 03801Tel. New Realm Brewing Co. is booming on the Beltline In early 2018, New Realm Brewing Co. opened on the Beltline in the heart of Atlanta. Co-founders Carey Falcone, Bob Powers, and Mitch Steele aren't new to the beer business. Falcone and Powers have worked various roles in the industry for over 25 years. Steele managed fermentation for three breweries as well as new beer development at Anheuser-Busch, and prior to starting New Realm, he was the Brewmaster for Stone Brewing in California. Steele helped define the West Coast IPA style and authored a book on the subject, IPA: Brewing Techniques, Recipe, and the Evolution of India Pale Ale. With a power team and a prime location, New Realm has seen explosive growth in their short six-month existence. With the unfortunate shuttering of Green Flash Brewing in Virginia Beach, New Realm seized an opportunity to grow quickly. They purchased the brewery assets of the location and later worked a multi-year lease on the building. Their soon-to-open Virginia brewery will allow New Realm to increase production as well as innovate new beers. And then there's Charlotte. After opening in Atlanta, a building they'd previously considered in Charlotte became available at a deal "too good to pass up", they purchased it. Falcone shares a bit with us this week on what's going to happen in Virginia Beach and what the plans are for Charlotte. With Steele's masterful knowledge of IPA, we had to pick his brain on the subject. We discuss the early days of American craft beer, how quickly its grown in a relatively short time period, the evolution of IPA, trends and fads, and whether or not he'll brew a NE Milkshake Smoothie Glitter IPA. (Spoiler: No. Definitely no.) Craft Beer News In this week's news, Brian shares the long-awaited location and date for 2018's Shelton Bros. Festival, info on a lawsuit about a beer named after a van that was named after a man, the cheapest place in the world to buy a beer, and a brewery that's going to be 100% non-alcoholic. What an amazing event! If you haven't been to one of the 13 iterations of the Atlanta Cask Ale Tasting, then you're missing out. Owen Ogletree, owner of Brewtopia.com, puts on the event every year at the Prado in Sandy Springs. This year's version featured more than 60 casks of unique and creative beers from Georgia, national and international brewers! We took advantage of our attendance at ACAT to drink some amazing beers (of course), but also to get updates on a few breweries and brewpubs in planning. First on the list was Mitch Steele. The former brewmaster for Stone Brewing is working with his partners to open up a brewpub on the Atlanta beltline sometime late in 2017. We spoke with him about the plans, and the reason why they picked Atlanta. Next, Owen took some time out of his busy day to talk about casks. What they are, the history involved, and why they are so much more nuanced than "normal" tapped beers. In our third segment, we speak to Matt and Lauren Curling, the husband and wife team behind Roswell's Variant Brewing Company. Also planning a 2017 launch, we talk about how they got started in craft beer (hint: it wasn't Matt at first!) and the trials and tribulations of starting up a new brewery. We also talk with our great sponsors, Your Pie Perimeter, about their upcoming Second Anniversary party. Ryan Skinner and Todd DeMatteo joined us in the fourth segment. Ryan and Todd are planning a new brewpub, Good Word, in craft beer starved Gwinnett County. We talked about starting up a new brewpub in downtown Duluth, as well as their idea for bringing the comforts of home to a brewpub. Finally, we were lucky enough to grab two of the world's foremost experts on cask ales. Des de Moor is a London-based beer judge and writer; and Steve Hamburg is a Chicago-area writer and beer judge. Both are cask experts, and we talk about the cask movement in the United States and what makes a great cask ale. Next week, we'll be cidering it up with the folks behind Mercier Orchards. Thanks for listening, and don't forget...drink local!
Happy Halloween, Beer Here! listeners. In this episode, Alex and Will focus on pumpkin beers and the history of the gourd itself. Beers this episode include the infamous Southern Tier Pumking as well as Dogfish Head's Punkin. Topics include a discussion of a 6 million fine dealt to AB InBev, Mitch Steele's (former Stone head brewer)remarks that we may have an IPA problem in America, and what beers we love to drink as the weather gets a little cooler and Fall comes into full effect. Music this episode is AFI's cover of 'Halloween', originally by The Misfits. Have a spooky Halloween everyone. Cheers!
We took the show on the road this week. All the way out to Avondale Estates to the home of Wild Heaven Craft Beers. The folks there were busy, you see. They were brewing a collaboration with a little place from Florida called Cigar City. So we were able to interview two amazing brewers at once - Wild Heaven's Eric Johnson and Cigar City's Wayne Wambles. We talk about Eric's non traditional entry into brewing, Wild Heaven's move to canning, and many more things...including what he and Wayne are cooking up! We'll also learn about the success of Emergency Drinking Beer and crack open a special sour that's in the works. Truck and Tap's Beers of the week included Wild Heaven's Autumn Defense, and a surprise from across the pond. Wayne and the Cigar City crew have spent the last several months traveling around the world, collaborating with brewers. One of their collabs happened to be with Ireland's Galway Bay Brewery, home of friend of the show Wil Avery. We sampled the result - Phaethon IPA - and gave Wayne his first taste as well! In the headlines (sponsored by Your Pie - Perimeter), we talk about Atlanta's newest planned brewpub, headed by former Stone Brewing brewmaster Mitch Steele. Also, Tim talked to Nick Hudson from Albama's Free the Hops, and has an update on the proposed regulations regarding to-go brewery sales. Don't forget to subscribe to the podcast (and leave a review!). Coming up next week, we'll have Cherry Street Brewing Co-Op's Nick Tanner. We'll be on the socials all week long, and we'd love to have you join us. Beer Guys Radio Craft Beer Podcast 038

I don’t think people fully appreciate how alive a beer is – it’s a live product made from agricultural products. It’s a very perishable item – these beers change a lot with time.
