I, even I, am He who comforts you. [NKJV]
Welcome to Daily Bitachon. We are now in the zone of nechama —the time of comfort . As we know, this week's Shabbat is called Shabbat Nachamu , based on the Haftarah , which opens with the words נחמו נחמו עמי / Be comforted, be comforted My nation, יאמר אלקיכם —so your God will say. The Pri Tzadik in this week's parashah is bothered: it shouldn't say יאמר /He will say—but rather אמר /God said. He explains that it's for future generations; whenever we read this Haftarah , God Himself is talking to us and giving us words of comfort. This is not just the first Haftarah , but for the next seven weeks. There are seven weeks of comfort. His words are, מתחדש הנחמה מפי השם ממש —the words of comfort literally come out of God's mouth and are renewed every year— ונכנס ללב —and enter the heart. That's how we get ready for the High Holiday season. It's worthwhile to refresh our memory—what does the word nechama , which we loosely translate as comfort , really mean? We go back to the first time the word nechama shows up in the Torah , where it says וינחם השם כי עשה את האדם בארץ . Simply speaking, Hashem comforted Himself that He made man on earth. ויתעצב אל לבו —and He was u pset. So now, if He's upset, why is He comforting Himself? Rashi says וינחם means נהפכה מחשבתו של מקום —God's thought changed. He changed from the trait of mercy to the trait of justice . Rashi continues and says: וכן כל לשון ניחום שבמקרא — wherever it says the word nichum in the Torah , it means to have a change of mind, as it says: ובן אדם ויתנחם/ Is God like a human being that changes His mind? על עבדיו יתנחם —on His servants He will change His mind. וינחם השם על הרעה —God changes His mind from the bad, and so on . כולם , says Rashi , all of them, לשון מחשבה אחרת —it means a different way of looking at things. So nachamu means not comfort , but: start looking at things differently. Have a different angle on things. Yes, we suffered. Yes, it's difficult. But there's a new perspective to be given. This reminds us of the famous story at the end of Masechet Makkot , where the group of Tannaim were going to Yerushalayim . They reached Mount Scopus, and they tore their clothing. When they reached the Temple Mount, they saw a fox running out from the Kodesh HaKodashim —the Holy of Holies. The rabbis started to cry, and Rabbi Akiva started to laugh. They said to him, "Why are you laughing?" He said, "Why are you crying?" And they replied, " This is a place where it says a non- kohen that enters should die, and now foxes are running there—and we shouldn't cry?" He said, " That's why I'm laughing. Because there are two pesukim . One says there will be negativity, and the good will only come when that negativity is fulfilled. And now that I see the negativity being fulfilled, I know that the positive prophecies will come true." And they said to him, Akiva nichamtanu, Akiva nichamtanu — Rabbi Akiva , you comforted us. Which means: Rabbi Akiva , you gave us a new angle, a new way of looking at things. And that's what our job is for these next weeks. We have three weeks of negative Haftarot , and seven weeks of positive Haftarot . That means Hashem wants us to focus on the flip side— not on the negative. In one of the upcoming Haftarot , Yeshayahu 49:14 , it says: ותאמר ציון עזבני השם — Tzion says: God has forsaken me. ואדני שכחני —and God forgot me. And God says: " You know what? You're doing the same thing Adam HaRishon did. I made a wife to help him, and he complained. Yaakov Avinu —I'm making his son into the king, the viceroy—and he's complaining. And Tzion , you're doing the same thing. I'm busy now getting rid of the other nations of the world. I already got rid of Bavel , I got rid of Madai , I got rid of Yavan —and now I want to get rid of the final wicked kingdom. And you're complaining and you're saying עזבני ?" So we have to look at things in a different light. And that's what we'll be doing, b'ezrat Hashem , this week until this Shabbat—which is Tu B'Av —and then b'ezrat Hashem , after that, we will start a new series to be announced next week.

Comforts For The Church In Babylon (Psalm 9) // Graham Phillips by Hope City Church
Some things are so familiar we stop thinking about them. Bread, for example. Or curry. They show up in so many meals they’re practically background noise. Staples. Comforts. Universals. So what happens when someone decides that’s not good enough? On this edition of Out to Lunch we’re talking about reimagining the familiar — turning the everyday into something exceptional. It takes a mix of obsession, patience, and maybe a little defiance. It’s the kind of project that makes your friends say, “You’re doing what now?” Morgan Angelle is co-founder of Straw Cove Flour Mill and Baking Company. Morgan isn’t just baking bread—she’s milling her own flour, from grain she sources directly from farms she’s vetted herself. She even knows which wheat scientists developed the strains she uses. That’s commitment. But it’s more than that—it’s a philosophy. For Morgan, bread isn’t just food, it’s a story of place, labor, and connection. Morgan’s culinary path started early. She grew up in Breaux Bridge watching PBS cooking shows and experimenting in the kitchen. She earned her culinary degree in New Orleans in 2005 and worked in kitchens across the region, but never quite felt at home behind the line. It wasn’t until she got obsessed with dough—literally, while working at Buck & Johnny’s—that she found her calling. Over eight years, she deep-dived into flour science, traveling to learn from bakers, millers, and farmers. She returned home in 2022 with a mission to build better bread from the grain up. Sajeev Joseph is co-owner of Priya’s Indian Food. You might think you know Indian food — tikka masala, naan, maybe a samosa or two. But Sajeev and his wife Priya offer something different: food made the way it’s cooked at home in India. No artificial colors. No sugar. Lots of vegan and gluten-free options. Originally from India, Sajeev studied theology, economics, and philosophy before settling in Lafayette in 2014. He and Priya started small, selling homemade dishes at the farmers market—she was the first Indian vendor there. In 2020, they opened their restaurant, a cozy four-table spot with a big reputation. Sajeev left his full-time job to support the business and help care for their kids. These days, their children sometimes pitch in too—making it a true family operation. One of the knocks you hear from bigger city folks from, say, New York, New Orleans, or Austin, is that, as cool as our Cajun culture is, wouldn’t it be great if there was an awesome bakery here? Or a real, authentic Indian restaurant? Well, one of the benefits of living in a community like Lafayette, is that one person can make a big difference. When that one person opens an awesome bakery, and another person opens an authentic Indian restaurant, not only do we now have the kind of food you normally only find in a big city, but guess what? We also don’t have to live in - or even visit! - New York, New Orleans or Austin. Johanna Divine sits in for Christiaan Mader, hosting this edition of Out to Lunch live over lunch at Tsunami Sushi in downtown Lafayette. One truth, two reactions. “God sees you.” How we react to that truth is very telling. In this study, we'll look at how to make sure you're on the comfortable reaction side of that equation. Zechariah 1:7-17 Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
Ever feel like being angry at injustice is a full-time job? What if you got some help with that? In fact, what if God promises to take care of all of that for us? How would that change your day? Your Nightly Prayer
Many of you have had an encounter with Jesus. I'm sure it was unique in many particulars, but it was also life changing. There's just nothing or no one like Jesus. You can't be neutral toward Him either. He evokes a deep-seeded response, either you're drawn to Him or repelled by Him. Today we're going to look at a relational encounter with Jesus and two of his very best friends, Martha and Mary. It's found in John 11:17-37 so open your Bible and/or Bible app and let's get to it. Thanks for listening. God bless you! To find out more about our church please go to www.whccnb.org.
When trials and suffering come, where do we turn? We ought to turn to God, the God of all comfort. Suffering in this life is inevitable. David knew that. He wrote his psalms about that. But he wrote with the knowledge that God's love brings comfort, encouragement, freshness, and life to those who pant after Him. In this message, Jill points us to the many resources for encouragement that God has already given us: His Holy Spirit, His word, and His people. God aks us to bring encouragement to those around us. This week, Steven, Ben, and Devon record remotely to avoid the usual chaos (rat wrestling included). From blacksmithing birthday gifts to questioning the ethics of breakfast, it's a classic episode full of heart, guilt, and sci-fi coziness. Real Life Devon's work trip was mostly pointless, thanks to the other party being wildly unprepared. Meanwhile, Steven got new windows installed and watched Captain America: Brave New World in the middle of it all — his verdict: “fine,” which seems to be Marvel's current default. He and Ben discuss Harrison Ford stepping in as Thunderbolt Ross, the return of The Leader and Red Hulk, and whether Marvel's third-act fight addiction is dragging it all down. On the home front, Steven had an “intense Thursday” filled with gymnastics class, BBQs, and blacksmithing five custom hooks for his mom's birthday. Ben went to the beach and made a solid case for awe — like ocean waves — as a cure for modern burnout. Oh, and Yellowcard is releasing a new album with Travis Barker on drums. Yes, really. Future or Now Devon read Animal Liberation Now and now feels like a hypocrite for still eating meat. The book's argument: if animals can suffer, they deserve rights. Cue a deep dive into factory farming, animal testing, calorie efficiency, and whether “ethical meat” should be a rare luxury rather than a daily default. They talk about cows, chickens, and baby monkeys; the morality of milk and butter; and why our modern food system depends on people looking the other way. Steven questions how to get enough protein on a vegan diet, and Devon admits it's complicated — especially for anyone without time, money, or access. If nothing else, they agree that learning to treat animals better might teach us how to treat each other better, too. Book Club: A Psalm for the Wild-Built The gang begins Becky Chambers's cozy sci-fi novella, where humans and robots live separately but peacefully. Dex, a non-binary monk, ditches the city to become a tea monk — traveling the countryside offering comfort in the form of warm drinks and conversation. Their first attempt fails, so they go all in: building a hydroponic tea garden and trying again. The story is full of sustainability, small joys, and gentle spirituality. The hosts love the “cozy punk” vibe and Ben's especially struck by the god of small comforts' advice: find the strength to do both. Next chapter brings a two-year time jump — and (hopefully) a robot. Thanks for listening and supporting the show — and for sticking with us through windows, waffles, and weird philosophical spirals. – S, B & D
Send us a textHave you ever felt like you're sitting on an emotional trash can, afraid that lifting the lid will make everything spill out? We've both been there. In this episode, we talk about how we've tried to hold it all together—telling ourselves to “move on” or “just get over it”—because that's what we heard from others and from our own inner critic. But we've found that real healing doesn't come from avoidance. It comes when we let God into the mess, one honest moment at a time.We share personal stories—like digging through old journals and clothes tied to body image struggles—and how counterfeit comforts only gave temporary relief. The real shift started when we stopped numbing the pain and started facing it with God. Psalm 23 reminds us He walks with us through the darkest valleys, not around them. This isn't about having it all figured out—it's about trusting the One who holds us even in our weakness. We hope you'll join us in exploring what it means to find lasting comfort, not in escape, but in Christ.Support the showLearn more about our Revelation Within Community: https://www.revelationwithin.org

Send us a textIn this episode, we get real about the counterfeit comforts we each reach for when life feels too heavy—whether that's emotional eating, perfectionism, scrolling, or even throwing ourselves into ministry. We open up about how our personal stories shaped these patterns. Heidi shares how growing up with alcoholic parents taught her to cope through control and performance, while Christina talks about how her mom's trauma from WWII in Germany created a legacy of anxiety and over-functioning in her own life. These habits may look harmless, but they often mask a deeper ache we're trying to numb.We also talk about how family history and cultural messages feed these false comforts and how even “good” things—like spiritual routines—can become a way to avoid real connection with God. But there's hope. Scripture invites us to bring our struggles into the light and let God meet us in the very places we tend to hide. Instead of running from discomfort, we're learning to pause and invite God in—right in the middle of our mess. Tune in and join us as we unpack the beginning of this healing journey.Support the showLearn more about our Revelation Within Community: https://www.revelationwithin.org
