Outside Lands 2025 lineup Dave MacLean is back on Brew Ha Ha with Steve Jaxon and Herlinda Heras, to talk about Hidden Splendor Beer and Outside Lands 2025. He has been on the show before, the last time was this episode a couple of years ago. Hidden Splendor Beer is Dave's new brewery that will be opening soon. Dave likes to create good beer and then places to enjoy it in. That is what he did in his previous endeavor, Magnolia Brewing. He will be brewing a lot of traditional beers, bitter, mild, light mild, porter, stout, pilsners and lagers. Dave is also here to tell us about Beer Lands for Outside Lands 2025 on Aug. 8, 9 & 10 in San Francisco. His discussion of that is on this other podcast episode. This separation allows each of today's subjects, Outside Lands and Hidden Splendor, to have their own audio track and search traffic. ;) Hidden Splendor will have a location in San Rafael that will open in the Fall. Dave wants it to be a ‘brewer's brewery' including using some rare brewing techniques like cask beer. In the meantime they will be delivering beer to the festivals like Beer Lands. Live from the Atlanta Cask Ale Tasting!ACAT has become a tradition for us. We've gone every year since we launched and always look forward to it. This year's event, the 18th, was no exception. Plenty of awesome cask beers and great people. It was actually pretty packed, which was nice to see with all the negative talk about craft beer and beer festivals. In keeping with tradition we sat down with the event organizer, Owen Ogletree of Brewtopia Events. We chatted about cask ale and why you'll sometimes see "Ale, Beer, and Stout" mentioned together as though they are distinct things. (They are, or they were.) We talk about beer foam, lacing, and how fests like ACAT inspire homebrewers.Georgia Craft Brewers Guild executive director Joseph Cortez sits down with us to talk beer laws and the current bill up for consideration, knows as The FOAM Act, SB163 would provide various relief for brewers in relation to self-distribution, sales limits, franchise law, and direct donations to charities. Ever thought about how you can get a lifetime of free beer? Actually, let's rephrase that question. Ever thought about launching your own brewery specialising in British cask ale? On this episode of The Factory Next Door we head to West Sussex to meet Liam, the owner of Aleworks Brewing Co. Sales of cask ales have been falling for years as drinkers switch to American or European-inspired lagers. Liam tells us how he plans to save the traditional British pint, the trauma of cold call sales, and why he is only a little bit mad. We also head to London to attend a celebration of British beer and get clear on the difference between cask ale and craft lager.

Okay, maybe it's not Harry Styles or Bad Bunny, but writing about beer history is, relatively speaking, kind of hot right now. Writers at a number of publications are unearthing cool stories about the origins of beer glassware, influential breweries, and obscure beer styles. There are Twitter and Instagram accounts dedicated to beer in art, vintage beer advertisements, and other visual aspects of brewing history. And here at Good Beer Hunting, we have our own series of history-focused articles and podcasts, Source Material. While a new generation of writers might be just starting to focus on beer history, some of the most influential voices in the field have been doing it for quite a while—and they're still going strong. In this episode, I'm talking to one of the strongest: Martyn Cornell, who has published his beer blog, Zythophile.co.uk, since 2007, though he started writing about beer much earlier. In 1988, Martyn was a founding member of the British Guild of Beer Writers. Over the years, he's won numerous awards from the Guild, including Beer Writer of the Year. In our talk, Martyn and I discuss beer writing and why there are so many errors and mistakes in beer history. We talk about how he does his research, as well as his books, including “Amber, Gold & Black” and “Strange Tales of Ale.” We discuss his recent article, ‘Tishonest Prewers' and Lager Bier Operas — Uncovering the True Origins of American Lager Brewing, which Martyn wrote for our Source Material series. I also ask Martyn about the changes in beer culture that he's seen over the years, and his take on the current status of Cask Ale in the U.K.
What do Portland's Level Brewing, Foreland, Upright, Steeplejack, and Away Days have in common? They form a growing list of breweries championing honest, proper cask ale. For decades breweries have tried to popularize this style, and Americans have spurned them. We'll discuss what cask ales are and why Americans—and Portlanders—are finally starting to drink them. Show notes from Host John Holl:I met Jeff Alworth in the comments section of his blog, Beervana. A decade ago I had written an article for a newspaper and Alworth had thoughts and took the piece to task. He was wrong, of course, so like any keyboard warrior, I logged on and defended my digital honor. We became friends shortly after. If you are interested in beer, you likely know Alworth. He's internationally respected writer and authority on beer. He has a deep respect for beer styles, history, tradition, and craftsmanship. The first addition of the beer bible has sold over 125,000 copies and the second edition, according to workman, the publisher is “the most comprehensive guide to the world of beer, with everything you need to know about what to drink, where, when and why.” Alworth is author of the Beervana Blog, the The Widmer Way (Ooligan), The Secrets of Master Brewers (Storey), and Cider Made Simple. He is co-host of the Beervana Podcast. Alworth hails from Portland, Oregon and as he began national book tour to support the new book he spent a few days in New Jersey, staying at my house. You should check out the podcasts he did with Steal This Beer as well as Beer Massif at two book signings for additional context. For cofounders Michael Messenie and Tim Lee, the idea behind Dutchess Ales (https://www.dutchessales.com) in Wassaic, New York, was to recreate the kinds of cask-conditioned ale they loved when living in Britain. If you've enjoyed a proper pint of cask ale in New York City in recent years, there's a good chance it came from Dutchess. Today, the brewery is branching out, brewing beer for distribution at a host brewery on Long Island, and even making forays into lagers (such as Ketzer Helles (https://beerandbrewing.com/review/dutchess-ales-ketzer-helles-lager-1614187707/), which scored a 98/100 with our blind panel). But their first love is, and always will be, cask ale. These are no historical reenactors. Messenie blends just a touch of inspiration from his Southern California roots with this British focus, resulting in beers that aren't slavish renditions but exhibit a flash of personality (within proper context). That same fusion with a heavy dose of tradition informs newer beers such as GB Pale Ale, where seven malts and a copitched blend of three yeast strains lends it notes of past and present. In this episode, Messenie discusses: Cask ale roots, history, and inspiration How pale ale speaks in a more compelling way than IPA Brewing GB Pale Ale with blended yeast and an evolving malt bill Tilting pub ales toward a drier finish Blending malts to build character Finding interesting notes in lesser-known English hops Working collaboratively through contract brewing And more. *This episode is brought to you by: * G&D Chillers (https://gdchillers.com): Born in the Pacific Northwest from a lot of hard work and singular goal, G&D has become the best damn chiller company in the world. This week on Beer Sessions Radio, Jimmy is learning about the craft beer industry in Atlantic Canada. On the show is Chris McDonald from Atlantic Canada Beer Blog in Atlantic Canada; Chris Reynolds from Bar Stillwell in Halifax, Canada; Craig Pinhey, a writer from Rothesay, Canada; and Jeremy White from Big Spruce Brewing in Baddeck, Canada. The group kicks off the conversation with an introduction to Atlantic Canada, focusing on the remarkable cask ale, which has been pouring since 1985 and later influenced the East Coast craft beer scene. Jimmy is completely new to Atlantic, so the gang also tosses in travel tips and recommendations for when things start opening back up. To try and get a gist for the history, Jimmy then sparks a lively conversation about old traditions and strange rules within the Atlantic beer scene. For the second half, Jeremy joins in to talk about Big Spruce Brewing, and praises Bar Stillwell for trendsetting across Atlantic. Bringing the conversation back to cask ale, the gang describes the subtle texture and unique carbonation that makes cask ale so appealing. And finally, Chris shouts out a new bar opening this week in Newfoundland, getting everyone excited for summer. Graining In has finally gone (virtually) international with the guys catching up with Ben Hulse, production manager at Northern Monk Brew Co. in Leeds, ENGLAND!Noah first met Ben when the Northern Monk crew played the role of boundlessly patient tour guide for BBB on their first trip to the UK. A year-and-a-half later, when Bissell Brothers had the true privilege of hosting Ben (as well as putting him to work) for three weeks via NMBCo's brewery "exchange" program. We get into the goals behind that concept and why BBB still needs to uphold their end of the deal; How the COVID-19 experience has been for breweries in the UK and why a proposed "Pandemic Vacation" had to be scrapped; The dualistic nature that currently defines the country's beer culture as the staunch tradition of Real Ale and the new wave of heavily American-influenced beer figure out their respective roles; Northern Monk's aggressively measured expansions, fancy new BrauKon, and presence in grocery chains, PLUS a helluva lot more. OH! - and Liverpool FC (both Ben and Noah's favorite soccer/football team) FINALLY makes its far overdue debut on the podcast. Bissell Brothers felt an immense kinship with Northern Monk since first contact, and that relationship has only grown since. People like Ben are exactly why their brewery is so adored by BBB and is a great reminder (for Noah, anyway) that sometimes this industry ain't so bad after all ;-) ........ .................................... ............................................ ........... We finally close the loop on a conversation that's been in INTENSE negotiations for the better part of the last year (or, it was COVID postponed) and are joined by Daniel Endicott of Forest and Main.Dan and his partner Gerard opened their brewery nearly a decade ago, opting to set up shop inside a large Victorian house, and that tone of eccentricity has been the heartbeat of the brewery ever since. Focusing on roughly equal parts saisons, IPAs, and "Pub Ales", Noah naturally latches on to the latter, and we plunge into the wild world of American beer engines, high serving temps, and BAGS OF BITTER (yes). As the force behind all of Forest & Main's watercolor labels, which are as numerous as they are strikingly unique, Dan speaks on his process and the small and steady goals that fuel his growth as an artist. We dip into all sorts of other places in this conversation with an immensely talented guy, humble as he is interesting. But let's be honest - if you weren't sold at "BAGS OF BITTER", what the hell are you doing here?.................................... ......................................... ...................... It's just the plebs in the castle this week, and the guys are talking inert gases, English beer, new horizons, and wrapping last year's beer consumption up with a (kinda ratty looking) bow. Noah gets into the brewery's fledging affair with Nitrogen, its role in BBB's newest beer, an English-style bitter named Oi!, as well as potential growth for Nitro-finished cans within a predominantly hop-focused brewery. Matty, fired up from chatting with an idol last week, makes some public resolutions about video for the new year, which leads up to a modified Three Bay that has the guys host the absolute worst award ceremony you've ever heard. ............................................................................................................................. “When we opened, everyone said ‘You can’t open a brewery with three beers,’” says Hogshead founder Stephen Kirby. “And I think the answer to that is ‘You can if they’re good ones.’ I think the truth’s out—I only make three beers. You’ve got guys who want to make everything. I make bitter, I make porter, I make mild.” That approach of doing only a few things but with an obsessive focus is highly unusual in today's beer market, where everyone seems to want everything, all the time. But Kirby is straightforward about his motivations—he’s in it to brew the beer that he loves and wants to drink. True to his British roots, that beer is what he grew up with—traditional cask ales. Kirby doesn’t hold back, sharing his views on a wide range of subjects, including: Why brewers should have the “bollocks” to name beers what they are Selecting hop varieties for balance in flavor and aroma Underpitching English strains at slightly lower temperatures for proper yeast flavors Innovation versus tradition British versus American takes on IPA How carbonic acid impacts hops bitterness Building small beers with big body while avoiding the impression of sweetness How water chemistry affects English beer styles Mash regimens to benefit head retention Using controlled oxidation through the life of a beer to tell a story “I brew the beer that I love, and I invite you come come over and have a pint,” Kirby says. “As a business model, it sucks, but it’s good for the soul. If you’re not making the beer you love, why the fuck are you doing it?” This episode is brought to you by: G&D Chillers (https://gdchillers.com): Nearly 2,000 breweries across the US, Canada & Mexico partner with G&D Chillers. This week on Beer Sessions Radio, Jimmy puts the spotlight on cask ales. He is joined by Michael Paul Messenie of Dutchess Ales, Paul Pendyck of UK Brewing Supplies, Steve Hamburg of Cask Marque, Greg Engert of The Grand Delancey, and Tony Forder of Ale Street News. They discuss what made each of them fall in love with cask ales, and why they nevertheless remains “a niche of a niche of a niche.” From their lower ABV, soft mouth feel, natural fermentation and enhanced flavor, cask ales are great to enjoy in large portions but require proper attention and care. The group discusses what tools and practices are necessary for good cellarmanship, how to make cask ales more accessible in the US, and the organizations and festivals like CAMRA and NERAX that help highlight what’s special about this type of beer. Despite Mother Nature's best efforts, the 16th Annual Atlanta Cask Ale Tasting was a huge success It was an unusually warm day for the 16th Annual Atlanta Cask Ale Tasting and this brought with it some crazy weather. As attendees filled Bold Monk Brewing to sample the cask ales the rain started coming down strong and with about an hour left the hammer dropped. The parking lot flooded and the very well-covered patio was drenched, and finally, the power went out. Fortunately, we had completed our show taping but it did cause some chaos for the Bold Monk and cut a few festival-goers off from their cask ales a bit early. Even with the craziness, I think everyone had a great time. This is our 4th year partnering with Brewtopia Events for ACAT and we kept our tradition going by speaking with festival organizer Owen Ogletree about the event and the ever-changing world of cask ales. We also spoke to a few of the breweries currently under construction in Georgia that we hope to see debut in 2020. The team from Social Fox Brewing is ready to bring some brews to Norcross. In today's episode Matthew ruminates briefly on the importance—nay magnificence—of cask ale, before chatting to Roger Ryman, the head brewer at Cornwall's St. Austell Brewery and creator of Tribute, one of the best selling cask beers in the country. Following the interview Matthew reads his article on another of the UK's great cask ales, Harvey's Sussex Best. SESSION SUMMARY: Cask ale or cask-conditioned beer is unfiltered and unpasteurized beer which is conditioned and served from a cask without additional nitrogen or carbon dioxide pressure. In the United States, it is most commonly seen sitting on a bar top in a gravity rack with brewers adding additional ingredients to a base beer to give it some extra flavor. Some bars and breweries have hand pump engines that pour cask ale the way it was meant to be served, just like they do in the English-style pubs you'd encounter on the other side of the pond.Sadly, cask ale (also known as real ale) is labeled as "warm" and "flat" by many beer consumers. However, it's important to understand that a beer's true flavors and aromas can stand out even more prevalent fashion in a well-done cask beer. In this session, we are going to put to rest many of the misconceptions surrounding cask ales in today's beer world. In Session 42 of the Breaking Brews Podcast, host Jason Cercone is joined by Josh and Stephanie Lepke, Founders of The Leaning Cask Brewing Company in Springdale, PA - about 15 minutes outside of the city of Pittsburgh. Josh and Stephanie bring all of the nuances of an English pub to their destination and brew beer with plenty of old world inspiration. Josh has also dialed in his skill set for modern brews, delivering strong in the American IPA category and beyond. Their taproom features a hand pump engine that allows customers to experience cask ale the way God intended. At the same time, Josh, Stephanie, and their staff provide as much information and education as they can to help consumers understand why cask ales deliver a different drinking experience and help enthusiasts gain a new appreciation for the liquid in their glass. This session features some great conversation about what inspired Josh and Stephanie to take the direction they have with their brand, how they've grown The Leaning Cask throughout the Pittsburgh market, some ins and outs of cask ale and cask conditioning you may not be aware of, where they see cask ales going as the beer world continues to evolve, and much more. You can catch up with The Leaning Cask Brewing Company on your favorite World Wide Web destination of choice:Website | Facebook | Twitter | Instagram MUSIC CREDIT: Theme music and music clips for the Breaking Brews Podcast - Hellfire by Adam Drake and Tom Jenkins, licensed via www.audionetwork.comSEASON II SPONSOR: Season II of the Breaking Brews Podcast is brought to you by Drunk Swag Source. Hop Forward: Getting You Ahead in the Brewing and Beer Business
On the Hop Forward Podcast this week, we sit down with Lincoln Green Brewing Co. owner and SIBA Chair of the Midlands Region Anthony Hughes to talk about how partnering with an established pub company has helped build a sustainable business, which predominantly - but not exclusively - produces cask beers. Anthony also talks about the role of SIBA in today's landscape and shares his thoughts on how CAMRA members are possibly hindering cask beer more than they are helping it. --- Today's episode is sponsored by SSV Limited (www.ssvlimited.co.uk) with additional support from Nichesolutions GB (www.nichesolutionsgb.co.uk).

In this world of unparalled choice, where kegs, bottles and cans of all styles constantly cry out for our attention, what's the value of cask ale? Emma hosts a panel discussion about the value of the pint in your glass - not just the price, but the history, the provenance and the meaning of cask ale. Featuring: Gary Sillence (Head Brewer, Brighton Bier) Mark Hazell (Publican & co-owner of The Evening Star, Brighton) James Hayward (Brewer, Iron Pier Brewery, Gravesend) Jane Peyton (drinks writer & educator)
A few months ago in the Spring, I was in Penticton attending and part of the judges panel for Okanagan Fest of Ales. While there I stopped in to say “Hi” to some friends of the podcast who were in the process of opening their own brewery. Like many stories I’ve encountered while making this podcast series, things don’t always go according to plan. The brewery had to change their name for various reasons a few days before my visit. But now fully open and operational I chatted Liam Peyton & Chris Vandenberg with Slackwater Brewing. Hop Forward: Getting You Ahead in the Brewing and Beer Business
There are so many issues surrounding cask beer, everything from low margins and dodgy pump clips, to bad cellaring and badly brewed beers. The list is seemingly endless. However, for all it's negative points, there is nothing quite like a pint of cask ale when stored and served correctly. This week on the Hop Forward Podcast, we talk to veteran brewer Shane Swindells from the Cheshire Brewhouse to discuss what ails cask ale. For more information on the Cheshire Brewhouse visit www.cheshirebrewhouse.co.uk/

Halfway Crooks, Bold Monks, and a Schoolhouse coming soon to the Georgia beer scene Recently, we sat down at the 15th Annual Atlanta Cask Ale Tasting and talked with a few of the folks behind some of Georgia's upcoming breweries. This is our 3rd year at the festival and it's become a tradition to catch up with some of our upcoming breweries. We also talk with festival organizer Owen Ogletree about cask ales and the changes he's seen hosting the festival over the years. As a bonus, we're joined for a quick chat with UK beer writer Rob Macardle, editors of CAMRA's Leicester Drinker. Halfway Crooks Beer founders Shawn Bainbridge and Joran Van Ginderachter pose with their furry friend at their brewery in Atlanta's Summerhill neighborhood. They are targeting a Spring 2019 opening.[/caption] Brewery Guests The Bold Monk | John "JR" Roberts is currently building The Bold Monk in Atlanta's hot Westside neighborhood. In addition to the new venture, JR also owns Max Lager's brewpub in downtown Atlanta. The area is also home to the recently opened Steady Hand Beer Co. and the recently announced second location for Scofflaw Brewing Co. The Bold Monk Stained Rose, a barrel-aged Wild Saison with grapes and cherries, took 1st Place for Specialty Beer at the event. Schoolhouse Beer | Thomas Monti and Justin Waller are the masterminds behind Schoolhouse. The schoolhouse theme is inspired by their background as teachers. The brewery is a "graduation" of sorts, the duo currently owns Schoolhouse Beer & Brewing in Marietta which sells packaged beer, growlers, and homebrew supplies. For those lamenting the closure of a local homebrew shop don't worry, the brewery will also have a homebrew shop inside. Halfway Crooks Beer | One of Georgia's most anticipated breweries, Halfway Crooks Beer is building out in a new development coming to Atlanta's Summerhill neighborhood, just next door to the former Turner Field. Owner Joran van Ginderachter and Shawn Bainbridge weren't able to join us at ACAT, so we took a trip down to check out their space and hear what's coming up. Listen to past Atlanta Cask Ale Tasting episodes: ACAT 2018 with Line Creek Brewing (Open), Split Batch Brewery (Planning) and Banyan Roots (Under construction as Best End Brewing Co.) ACAT 2017 with New Realm Brewing Co., Variant Brewing, and Good Word Brewing (All open)

The Beer Guys talk to Owen Ogletree, one of the biggest influencers in the Georgia Craft beer scene. We discuss a brief history of beer in Atlanta, as well as the Atlanta Cask Ale Tasting event on January 23. We also talk to Zach Yurchick, owner of Truck and Tap. And a special guest stops by!
It's our "24" Eh! Us Canadian hosers like the "Two-Four" don't'cha'know. Come have a cold one and hear some Nerd News, sit with us for some Stiff Ifs, and relax with laughs and geeky good times. Speaking of Canada, we even talk about curling. Well, Will Ferrell as Ron Burgundy pitching Anchorman 2 in every which way he can. Did you buy you a Cards Against Humanity set during the Black Friday sale? Lots more Boardgames to plug: Story War, Gloom, Once Upon a Time, and Machine of Death (Richie's Kickstarter Christmas game.) Matt (somewhat reluctantly) gets into Skyrim Minecraft, and talks about snow. And the whole cast is bonkers over our Tiny Death Star's. Tim discusses some cool comics: Son of Origins and Imagine Agents. And as a group we wonder why we never started mining BitCoins, but consider becoming BitCoin Treasure Hunters. Also, in keeping with this episode's theme, the cast plays "The Two-Four" themed game: Fictional Beers from movies, comic books and TV show (Tim, of course, gets extra excited.) ...this podcast will self-destruct. The Last Cast, cast: Richie Favalaro. Christopher Coey. Matthew Jemmett. Tim Maclean. Please Stand By.
