This week's guest is a natural-born storyteller with a gift for amplifying voices in the hospitality world. As the president and founder of H2 Public Relations, Heidi Hageman has spent nearly two decades shaping the public image of top restaurants and industry professionals in Chicago and on the West Coast, with a client list that includes a number of Joiners alums including Daisies, One Off Hospitality, and even Scofflaw. She joins us in the studio to share how a serendipitous move to San Diego—and an unexpected post-college pivot—launched her into the world of PR. We get into the do's and don'ts of restaurant publicity, navigating crisis communications, her cross-industry collaborations with the likes of Wilco and the Blackhawks, and so much more.

This week, we're excited to welcome Julia Kramer, a former deputy editor at Bon Appetit and acclaimed restaurant critic, who joins us to tell us about her career covering food. After honing her writing skills under the tutelage of literary giant David Foster Wallace, Julia found her calling in the vibrant world of food journalism. She cut her teeth at Time Out Chicago, where she fearlessly navigated the city's culinary scene, even taking a stint as a less-than-stellar barback at Danny's own Scofflaw. Her sharp wit, infectious enthusiasm, and discerning palate eventually landed her a coveted spot at Bon Appetit, where she traversed the nation in search of America's hottest new restaurants. In this episode, Julia opens up about the highs and lows of her culinary adventures, from the thrill of discovering hidden gems to the challenges of maintaining anonymity and balancing her own voice with the demands of a major publication. She shares candid insights into the changing landscape of food media, tells us about her favorite Substacks, and so much more.
It's happy hour on Joiners this week as we sit down for a booze-infused conversation with Luke DeYoung. He's a bartender and cocktail craftsman with decades of experience at some of the city's finest bars, including Scofflaw, where he worked alongside the one and only Danny Shapiro. Together, they have been hard at work on Sip Sip, a video cocktail series that seeks to lower the barrier of entry for handcrafted cocktails with engaging tutorials and educational content. To top it all off, he's the beverage director behind Oliver's, a 1930s speakeasy in the South Loop that opened earlier this year to much fanfare. This is a man who knows his way around a good pour — we get into the nitty-gritty of technique, deliberately finite dining experiences, the best spots for heavy petting at Scofflaw, and, as always (because we can't help ourselves): so much more.
How does a slasher film flop so spectacularly that it becomes a cult classic? Join us on Screams and Streams as we explore the enigma that is Jimmy Huston's 1981 horror flick, "Final Exam." The action takes place at a small North Carolina college, where students find themselves targeted by a mysterious killer during their exam break. We kick things off with our initial impressions, critiquing the film's shaky attempt to blend college comedy with the slasher genre and noting its struggle to mimic "Halloween" due to poor writing and acting. Our sinister sip for this episode, the Scofflaw cocktail, left us feeling sour—literally—prompting us to suggest some tweaks for a better balance.Prepare for a laugh as we recount the film's more absurd elements, from the killer's unmasked appearance to the cringe-worthy joke about school shootings. It's hard not to mock the nonsensical decisions, like the implausible prank involving a fake shooting, which feels painfully out of place today. We draw comparisons to the meta-commentary style of "Scream," pointing out the lack of backstory and motivation for the killer that makes "Final Exam" a perplexing watch. We also highlight moments that are so bad they're almost good, like the scene where the killer peers comically through a windshield. As we dissect the standout and cringe-worthy moments, we can't help but commend the heroine's determination and the noteworthy gym fight that wraps up the film. From the lack of empathy shown during a killing scene to an actor enduring real ice water for a prank, we cover it all. We delve into fascinating behind-the-scenes tidbits, such as the film being shot in sequence and the reckless safety practices on set, providing a glimpse into the chaos of low-budget filmmaking. So tune in for a chuckle, some eye-rolls, and a deeper appreciation for the wild, flawed world of "Final Exam. Head to www.screamsandstreams.com for more information related to our episode.

It was a moment of panic for Liss yesterday when she realized she left her house without her drivers license & thought every cop she passed while driving knew!
Hour 4: Steve Cohen will meet the media later today and we don't expect anything to come of this that will make Mets fans feel any better. Boomer wonders why Peter Schwartz needed to call 3-1-1. Gio wants him to become Peter Schwartz, Sports Cowboy. We talked about the Jordan Davis song, ‘Next Thing You Know' and Eddie plays Jerry drops. Jerry returns for an update but first we talked about congestion pricing in NYC and what a disaster the MTA and the city is. Boomer wants to clothesline a biker going the wrong way on the streets of NYC. Billy Eppler met the media and was asked how much he was to blame for the season. The Mets hit 4 HRs and beat the Brewers last night. The Yankees lost to the lowly A's as their offense went dead again. The Kelce brothers said podcasting is the toughest job in the world. We made it through the holiday weekend unscathed and are almost done with this short work week. Nice.On this week's show we recap Brian and Nate's trips to Florida and the beer they got into on their travels. Smalls and I stayed here but Smalls threw a party so we had some grilled meats and beers with friends and then I binged the rest of Ted Lasso.I sip on a new Scofflaw brew called Hop Shatter. Here's what the brewery has to say about the beer.Originally brewed for the 2023 Craft Brewers Conference, this potent IPA showcase CGX Cryogenic Lupulin Pellets, jam-packed with resins and oils for Flavor and Aroma and less environmental impact and production waste. Featuring Motueka CGX, Amarillo CGX, and Cashmere T-90 for notes of zesty citrus, with a touch of floral, white grape, and fresh berries.Interesting. Very tasty beer, too.We discuss Sima, also known as Finnish Spring Mead. It's a very low alcohol beverage brewed for May Day festival, known as Vappu in Finland. Brian tried a commercial take on the style this weekend but it's also a very easy one to brew at home.A bill is up to allow shipping alcohol by USPS. We won't get too excited for that just yet as it's been talked about before, but we'll see. Brewers are buying their breweries back from Big Beer. Quite the turn of events, I wonder if we'll see more of it?And the monks are really sick of people reselling their beer and they're cracking down. Happy Holidays, Joiners fans! Our guest this week is Chef Wilson Bauer. Bauer is the talent behind Flour Power, a gem of a pasta restaurant he opened at the beginning of the pandemic. They're doing incredible stuff over there, and it makes sense why: Bauer came from Elizabeth and Schwa, and even helped out as a mercenary cook at Scofflaw. He cuts no corners: he puts a lot of emphasis on ethical sourcing, maintaining relationships with vendors, and making sure he uses local and sustainable ingredients. We get into the sometimes-tricky ethics of food, pricing and service, as well as the illuminating practice of growing your own.

In the final segment of the hour, we talk about fans ripping down the goalpost at Tennessee and throwing them in the river. Then the university asked fans to pay for it, and they did.

On today's episode I interview Douglas Smythe, a men's shaving guru and owner/spokesman for Phoenix Shaving Accoutrements.Douglas Smythe was first introduced to traditional shaving as a child watching his dad shave on the weekends, fast forward to today and find him and his business, Phoenix Shaving, trailblazing on the forefront of the Traditional Wet Shaving revival we are currently seeing crop up around the world.Having created his first perfume at age 8 with his chemistry set the die was cast. After college he moved to Central America where he lived in a hammock at the edge of the rain forest. While there he developed an after bite type solution that relieved the inflammation of bug bites. The product became popular with both locals and tourist alike, so much so, four years later he was back in the USA producing and shipping his wares to Costa Rica.Eventually his passion for male grooming and traditional shaving became the focal point of his business and Phoenix Shaving was born. Almost immediately, folks began to take notice of Phoenix Shaving's daring scents and creative approach to all things shaving and within 2 years both him and his business partner were featured in Forbes Magazine.Douglas is also co-host of the popular morning show I'd Lather Be Shaving and organizer of The Big Shave S'west, a yearly "Shave Festival" held each year outside of Los Angeles in sunny Mesa, Arizona. He is a lively online personality and a dynamic public speaker on all things male grooming with a concentration in the art and technique of traditional shaving.Documentary on The Big Shave West, year 2: http://shor.by/YbyFPrior podcast appearances: Fit Man Project, Gentlemen's Scofflaw, Niche Pursuits, Passive Income, Home Malone, Gentlemen's Scofflaw, The Cutting Edge Wet Shaving Podcast, Moustache & Blade...and Many More.Douglas also runs the YouTube show I'd Lather Be Shaving.Links/Social media: http://idlatherbeshaving.comStore: http://phoenixshaving.comTwitter: Douglas_SmytheInstagram: phoenix_shavingFacebook: douglas.smythe.73YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCv3quWHkQ2hPGpYRUp7gpngThe Big Shave S'West: https://bigshavesouthwest.comSupport the show (https://www.salsersmith.com/shop)
