Izzy Baker returns solo for a special Tuesday edition of Mental Man Monday — and this one carries emotional weight. He opens by revisiting key takeaways from the latest episode of The Mental Health Podcast, “Your Homeboy Was Never Your Homeboy,” which highlights the uncomfortable truth behind broken friendships. One moment stands out: “You ever get cut off and wish you were the one who cut them off first?” It's the kind of raw reflection that sets the tone for everything that follows. The episode then shifts into a somber tribute to the late Malcolm Jamal Warner. After a resurfaced clip on The Shade Room shows Warner discussing legacy and impact just before his passing, Izzy pauses to honor him and to ask a hard question: If today were your last day, what would your legacy actually say about you? To close, Izzy lightens the mood without losing spiritual depth, reflecting on David and Tamela Mann's response to divorce rumors. Instead of clapping back with hostility, the couple uses humor and unity to shut down the noise. Izzy offers a new framework for responding to lies, drama, or rumors not with rage or silence, but with confident, Godly wit. This episode weaves legacy, loss, and levity into one thoughtful stream. It's a reminder that your presence, your relationships, and your responses all matter, and they're writing your story, even now. Tune in. Reflect. Ask yourself what story you're leaving behind.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/p-s-a-the-mental-health-podcast--5520511/support.
Season 9, Episode 13 of PSA: The Mental Health Podcast marks Izzy Baker's return to the mic solo for the first time since the premiere, diving headfirst into a conversation most people are too afraid to have: what happens when you realize your homeboy ain't your homeboy? Blending personal reflection, social media trends, and biblical truth, Izzy explores the emotional and spiritual toll of betrayal between friends, especially among men. Using the story of Jonathan and David from 1 Samuel 19–20, he breaks down what true loyalty looks like and how covenant friendship can't be confused with trauma bonding. Drawing on insights from resources like Psychology Today, Mental Health America, Calm, and Headway, the episode outlines clear signs of toxic friendships: emotional exhaustion, manipulation, subtle competition, and spiritual misalignment. Izzy makes it clear—just because you've known someone for years doesn't mean they're assigned to your future. He challenges listeners to stop calling jealousy loyalty and to stop mistaking gossip for concern. Throughout the episode, he reflects on times when he ignored the signs, offers perspective on taking accountability, and provides a blueprint for knowing when to make amends—and when to walk away.Whether you've outgrown someone, been disrespected too many times, or are struggling to hear God through the noise of familiar voices, this episode is for you. You weren't built to maintain friendships that drain you. You were built to discern, to grow, and to protect your peace. Izzy invites listeners to be honest with themselves and ask: is this really my homeboy—or just someone who's comfortable with my dysfunction?Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/p-s-a-the-mental-health-podcast--5520511/support.
This week, we tackle the lofty, ambitious, sometimes bombastic topic of rock operas and concept albums. Most acknowledge that the rock opera was the outgrowth of the psychedelic era where, particularly in a post-Sgt. Pepper world, the rock n' roll album became an artistic statement. As musicians sought to expand and alter the fabric of pop music, “rock operas” with narratives, character development, and distinct movements were being explored on records like the Pretty Things' SF Sorrow (1968) and the Who's Tommy (1969). All rock operas are concept albums, but not all concept albums are rock operas. The concept album is a collection of songs that are tied together to present an overarching theme, going back as far as Woody Guthrie's Dust Bowl Ballads, a 1940 collection of 78 rpm records that stayed true to the title. Joining us as our Third Lad for this discussion today is Dave Gebroe, the creator & host of the music obsessives' podcast Discograffiti. Dave dives into amazingly deep and immaculately researched discussions on the catalogues of a wide range of artists - if not with the artist themselves, then with a jaw-dropping roster of guests. Dave is also a filmmaker, writing, producing and directing the movies The Homeboy and Zombie Honeymoon. If that weren't enough, he's masterminded a 2 LP tribute to-slash-reimagining of Lou Reed's much maligned album Metal Machine Music, and I believe is working on a rock opera of his own. Oh, and you thought Gregg ruins everything? Just wait until he meets his match...Berlin! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Look. Times are dark. So this week, we decided to tackle a somewhat lighter topic and look into Drake's remarkably tone-deaf lawsuit against Universal Music Group—the label to which both he and (beef opponent) Kendrick Lamar are signed. In essence, Drake alleges that UMG used all their influence to make Kendrick's Grammy-winning diss track “Not Like Us” a viral mega-hit. Which, like…yeah. Of course they did. They are in the business of producing viral mega-hits. While the context of the lawsuit—namely, multiple violent attacks on Drake's house—is quite serious, it's hard not to find the whole thing ridiculous. After over a decade of industry machinations, Aubrey really had the nerve to sue UMG for…hurting his feelings? [Yes, it's actually for defamation of character, but in the court of public opinion, those two are pretty much synonymous] Despite this, the actual content of the legal filing is fascinating—offering readers a guided tour of exactly what UMG is doing out there, hosted by someone who really knows how the sausage gets made. Payola? Selective copyright enforcement? Contract negotiation hardball? You betcha. THEN: Saxon and Sam get a little loose and take a jog through the Grammys. Album Of The Year? Sure. But also…who did you have for Immersive Audio? Subscribe to our Newsletter!

Music artists should register their music rather than rely on personal friends for management because registered music provides legal protection and establishes ownership. This ensures that artists can receive royalties from their work and have a clear record of their creations. Additionally, professional management offers industry expertise, networking opportunities, and a structured approach to building a brand, which friends may not possess. By choosing to work with professionals, artists can focus on their creative process while their management team handles the business aspects of their career.Remember to Like, Share, and SubscribeSupport the showhttps://rumble.com/c/c-6858269https://www.Blonde-Intelligence.comhttps://youtube.com/c/IndieArtistMusicHustlewithBlondeIntelligencehttps://chrt.fm/track/GF3B5B/dts.podtrac.com/redirect.mp3/feeds.myhost.com/my.mp3

Jesus isn't a "Sky-Fairy, Old Man Upstairs, or Homeboy." He also isn't a Hallmark Channel version of God or Genie in a Bottle that much of watered-down Western Christianity makes Him out to be. We need to live bold lives that don't obscure the good news and diminish the great name of Jesus with tepid, religious, and hypocritical behavior.Show Notes:Here's the link to Pastor Tim's recent sermon audio I referenced. Most of our listeners have surely at least heard of Homeboy Industries, which is the largest gang intervention, rehab and re-entry program in the world. Founded in Los Angeles by the Jesuit priest Fr. Greg Boyle in 1988, Homeboy works with about 10,000 former gang members each year in dozens of different ways, from job training to tattoo removal to wraparound case management services. Fr. Greg recently received the Presidential Medal of Freedom for his pioneering work in this area. One of Homeboy's initiatives that host Mike Jordan Laskey just learned about recently is the Homeboy Art Academy, which engages at-risk youth and adults in diverse forms of art as tools for healing and transformation. The art academy is the brainchild of today's guest -- Fabian Debora, an accomplished visual artist and a former gang member himself. Fabian's story is so powerful – full of trauma and despair and hope and beauty and community. Unlike most episodes of AMDG, this one isn't a classic interview. We're just going to let Fabian share his story with you. You don't want to miss it. In May, FATHER GREGORY BOYLE, founder of HOMEBOY INDUSTRIES in Los Angeles — the largest gang intervention and re-entry program in the world — was honored by President Biden with the Medal of Freedom, the nation's highest civilian honor. Homeboy said that Boyle “…exemplifies the transformative power of compassion, forgiveness, and second chances. For nearly forty years, Father Greg has empowered hundreds of thousands of individuals to break free from the cycles of poverty, violence, and incarceration.” Here's our 2010 conversation where we talk about his work and his first book, TATTOOS ON THE HEART. We were joined by Luis Perez, one of the senior staff at Homeboy. Learn more: homeboyindustries.org

We are super excited to have David Gebroe, host of the Discograffiti Podcast, as our guest on No Simple Road this week. Dave Gebroe has written, produced, and directed two feature films to date. The Homeboy, distributed worldwide by Urban Entertainment, marked his debut. His follow-up was the horror hit Zombie Honeymoon. After a successful festival run (Slamdance, Sitges, Hamptons, Torino, San Francisco International, and many others), Zombie Honeymoon was picked up for national distribution by Showtime, and internationally by Fabrication Films. It is enjoying a healthy life in over 45 countries, in addition to having experienced a successful North American theatrical release. In addition, Gebroe has served as manager to such indie music luminaries such as Jessica Pratt and La Sera, and has been a contributing music critic to such publications as the International Review of Music and LiveDaily over the years. This conversation is a masterclass in what it means to lay it all on the line, give it your all, go all in, go balls to the wall. David's frenetic schedule of releasing content is nothing short of incredible and his passion for music is only matched by his humor and his wit. We talk with him about creating the Discograffiti podcast, losing his co-host at a crucial moment, The Grateful Dead and why he thinks Brent was awful, keeping a pace to give folks a world to immerse themselves in, reasons his health has suffered at the hands of his podcast schedule, and a ton more! It's easy for CEOs or other leaders to get stuck in the “corporate” bubble. But there are valuable lessons outside that bubble — even in unexpected places. This week, we're talking to a gang rehabilitation nonprofit CEO who shares some of the principles that make his organization tick. From team culture to leadership and successful business ventures, there's a lot he can teach organization leaders — or any individual who wants to make the world a better place. This episode is also a special “giving back” episode where we spotlight a charitable organization every week during the holiday season. Tom Vozzo is an author, speaker, and Fortune 200 executive turned nonprofit CEO at Homeboy Industries, the largest gang rehabilitation and re-entry organization in the world. Tune into the full episode for more on what Tom has learned during his stint as a nonprofit CEO (and why those lessons are different from the corporate world), the genesis of Homeboy Industries, the simple solution to poverty in the U.S. that not enough people recognize, and much more. Here's a Glimpse of What You'll Learn: Info about Homeboy Industries and the population they serve More about Carl's personal experience touring Homeboy, and the “sanctuary” that the nonprofit has created for former gang members What it means to be a “survivor to the extreme” — and how Homeboy Industries serves that group of people The importance of tattoo removal in the work that Homeboy does What Tom has learned in his position as Homeboy CEO, after his time in the corporate world How Homeboy Industries measures success within the organization — plus why he's “allergic” to that term Why Homeboy takes the Pareto principle (the 80-20 rule) — and completely flips it upside down to do the opposite The genesis of Tom's book, and why the lessons that he wrote about can apply in any business or organization What the “Homeboy way” can teach us about poverty, leadership, helping people, building a business, and more More info about how people can donate to or support Homeboy Resources Mentioned In This Episode: Homeboy Industries website Tom Vozzo on LinkedIn “The Homeboy Way: A Radical Approach to Business and Life” by Tom Vozzo Homeboy Industries on Facebook Buy a copy of “Lost at CEO: An Entrepreneur's Guide to Strategy” by Carl J.
