In this episode of These Three Things, Deborah welcomes Aimee Bateman, an award-winning career coach and former CEO of Careercake. Aimee shares the three things that have profoundly impacted her life and career. First, she speaks about an unknown client she calls "John", who inspired her to stop working for corporations and start working for the people. Next, Aimee describes the comfort she finds in her newly bought family home. Having grown up in foster care, when moving home was a regular and sometimes immediate occurrence, she now has the stability and peace she was looking for in her youth. Lastly, she reveals the dog collar worn by her then puppy, Oscar. This tiny red dog collar, symbolises to Aimee, the journey she took into motherhood and the unconditional love of her rescue schnauzer. The A Better HR Business podcast looks at how consultants and tech firms in the broad Human Resources field grow their business; and how they help employers get the best out of their people. In this episode of A Better HR Business, we are kindly joined by Aimee Bateman, founder of the renowned career development platform Careercake. Aimee shares her extraordinary journey of building and scaling her business, from the early challenges of technology limitations to the successful sale of Careercake to SocialTalent. Her insights on creating valuable products and fostering strong relationships are inspiring. Aimee has spent 22 years in the career development space. A former recruiter who became a career performance coach and eventually the CEO of a venture-backed Edtech startup.  As a recruiter, she placed over 2,000 professionals in new roles before founding Careercake, an e-learning company that was voted the UK's No.1 career development platform. As the CEO, she defied the odds by securing VC and angel investments across two continents, despite operating in a landscape where less than 1% of funding goes to a female founder. Together with her team, Careercake scaled into 42 countries supporting companies such as Nationwide, Companies House and Tech Nation to up-skill their people. In 2022 Aimee sold Careercake to the fabulous hiring skills platform, SocialTalent, before exiting and giving birth just 30 days later. 10 million people have taken Aimee's professional development courses, including 3 million on LinkedIn Learning and she's been featured as a career expert on the BBC and Sky.  In a wide-ranging discussion on the podcast, Aimee and Ben talked about: ✅ How she started the business, Careercake (it wasn't about making money). ✅ How it turned into a business. ✅ Taking on VC money and angel investors. ✅ How and why the business pivoted when it wasn't working. ✅ The new direction takes off. ✅ Selling the business to SocialTalent. ✅ Aimee's not sure what she'll build next - how she's deciding what to do. ✅ And much more. Today, we're going to be chatting with Aimee Bateman, the CEO and Founder of Careercake, about this. On work-life balance; It changes depending what time of month it is or year or what's going on in my life. Work-life balance is such a personal thing. Firstly do you like your work. Everybody deserves 8 hours a day to go somewhere where they feel seen, heard and valued so that it impacts the rest of their lives. Aimee started off as a commercial recruiter. In 2010 there were an extreme amount of talented people who found themselves out of work in South Wales. The focus of the recruiter (at the time) was on placing people in roles for companies; not necessarily focusing on the people themselves. This didn't sit well with 29 year old Aimee who was about to earn a big commission on the back of placing someone in an Financial Director role! In that moment everything changed. Careercake On the back of that moment, Aimee went home and bought a cheap camera on eBay and started making videos in her kitchen. Videos that would teach people how they would not need people like her. These included 'How to'; Write your own CV Get your own interviews Contact people via email to get an interview All with a view to helping people power themselves and take control of their own situation. It was 2010 and no one was really doing anything with videos at that time. In 5 years Aimee received over 42 million views on YouTube. Having been to university and got her first job in recruitment, her self esteem changed completely. To the point that it was oozing out of her! A lot of that came through being in a job where she was valued. Admittedly, Aimee lost her way a little bit. For a couple of years she lost her 'why' she was doing it. IN THE SHOW Where or how have you felt most alive this week? Sue’s been blown away by a recent episode of one of the UK’s Continuing Dramas exploring male rape and male suicide –  often taboo subjects, both explored with rawness and respect – and drawing true excellence from the whole production team.   Sherry thoroughly enjoyed her weekend with her NCT Tribe (especially the geeky bits!), in particular the sense of ‘coming home’ when spending time with people with similar intentions, values and ambitions. Delighted that On The Tipping Point got a special mention at the event! (01.40 – 8.50) How have you been challenged? This week we talk about setting intentions and big hairy goals! Our big goals are the ones that motivate us to keep going, no matter how scary or daunting they are.   There’s something about setting audacious goals that ensures they are energising and challenging and also very personal to us as individuals. No-one’s ever been excited by a SMART goal, right?! We explore how to set goals and intentions in a way that not only lights our fire, but also helps us to gather personal evidence that we are specifically achieving what we set out to achieve, in a way that keeps us on track with our mission. (08.51 – 36.32) So where are you building momentum right now? As we keep saying, momentum is critical in getting past the Tipping Point. Sue has a new online course that has just gone live, a version of the flow challenge, in partnership with CareerCake.com – another alliance with fantastic women who are on a mission to help people take control of their careers!   Sherry remains hugely busy with her NCT project and is therefore looking at how to get into consistent and sustainable habits of self care to be fit for the task ahead. (36.33 – 40.30) How have you been inspired this week? Sue’s been inspired by some feedback she received on her Advanced Communication Skills course, where someone used one of the techniques she taught on the course to re-visit and clear a negative experience from earlier in their career which had huge impact on their career since. It turned into a powerful reminder that we don’t need to be perfect in what we do to have a life-changing impact.Sherry shares a TED talk podcast she listened to, by Susan David, about emotional agility. Two quotes in particular resonated: “We own our emotions, not the other way around” and “Our emotions are simply data, we don’t need to allow our emotions to be directive.” (40.31 – 45.12) What else or what next? Sue decides she will be more audacious, especially in her mission mapping.   Sherry decides to set a big hairy goal for her business. We’ll feedback in due course!   (45.13 – 46.35)  Here are the resources mentioned in this week’s show: Built to Last: Successful Habits of Visionary Companies By Jim Collins & Jerry Porras Sue’s new online course to help you find your flow: Being The Best You: Self Improvement Modelling On The Tipping Point LIVE!
