South Auckland's Tangaroa College has asked students to cover uniforms in public after videos of student brawls surfaced. Tension between students at Manukau schools is also spreading into online goading. One video shows about 15 young people fighting, with one lying on the pavement being kicked in the head. Principal Chris Bean says because Tangaroa College's uniform is so distinctive, he doesn't want students wearing it around and about. "We just wanted to be sure that they could move through from home to school and vice-versa in a safe way." LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

If you've ever attended a large concert in a stadium, you'll be aware of the efforts performers go to in order to make the crowd jump, dance and scream as loud as possible, in order to build up an intense atmosphere. Some concerts seem to go further than others, with recent reports that both Taylor Swift and Travis Scott gigs caused earthquakes, due to the jumping crowds.Sean was joined by Chris Bean, Head of geophysics at the Dublin institute for advanced studies to discuss…

Generally speaking, Ireland is a pretty safe place. For example, when it comes to natural phenomena, insects, or animals, very few things can do you serious harm. We have no snakes, bears, wolves, or venomous species, and our spiders are 99.9% benign. And it's also the case that seismic activity is very rare here and even if it is detected, it pales in comparison to our nearest neighbour, the UK. Why? Chris Bean who leads the Geophysics Section at DIAS joins Jonathan to discuss.
Chris Bean, Senior Professor and Head of Geophysics at the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies (DIAS), discusses the scale of the earthquakes in Turkey and Syria.

Getting the latest on the earthquake was Guardian Journalist in Turkey, Ruth Michaelson, Country Director for Goal Syria, Jeannie Zielinski, and Senior Professor of Geophysics at the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies, Chris Bean.

Dan Jones and Chris Bean introduce Chronscast, the official podcast of SFF Chronicles, the world's largest science fiction & fantasy (and horror!) community, with over 20,000 members and growing. In episode 0, we give an overview of season 1, outlining what people can expect from Chronscast, why we're doing it, and how it links back to SFF Chronicles. As SFF Chronicles (or "Chrons" as we call it) has a large writing community embedded in it, we'll be taking a look at some of the great genre books (and the occasional film) from the perspective of writers, trying to figure out why something works (or doesn't), and what we can learn from it. Each episode we'll have a special guest who'll help us through the text of that month, and who will also talk to us about their own work and journey. Our guests will include authors, teachers, publishers, literary agents, and other podcasters.Further ReadingRead Dan's blogs, short fiction, and essays at danjonesbooks.club Read Chris's blogs and flash fiction at beanwriting.comAnd join the world's largest SFF community for free at sffchronicles.com

Sorry for the two and a half week break! We are back and going strong again. This is our 5th episode of Knowing You Know Nothing (the official podcast of The Philosophes). This week I am fortunate to have my friend and fellow Philosophes member, Chris Bean. We will be introducing the discussion of whether or not American is a land of opportunity. This topic is a difficult one to tackle in just one podcast. We may revisit this topic more in the future with more guests. The podcast sparks a great chance for this discussion to continue on our open Facebook group. www.thephilosophes.com Instagram and Twitter: philosophes2018
