Ireland's biggest astrophotography competition 'Reach for the Stars' is now open for entries. Organised by the School of Astronomy and Astrophysics at the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies (DIAS) the competition aims to find the best astro-photographs taken in Ireland between 26 April 2024 last year and 02 June 2025. This year, for the first time, Under 18s can enter the smartphone category -the 'Night Sky in Your Hand'. Shortlisted entrants will be announced in late June with the public invited to vote for their favourite to win the "People's Choice" category at that time. Run in partnership with The Irish Times and sponsored by the Astronomical Observatories of Ireland and MKC Communications, full details about the competition can be found on www.reachforthestars.ie. Photographs taken between 26 April 2024 last year and 02 June 2025 can be entered in five distinct categories: Night Sky in Your Hand (Category expanded to include U18s): Images taken with only a smartphone, and without telescopes, of an astronomical scene. Out of this World - Planetary: Images of the planets, sun and moon. Out of this World - Deep Sky: Images of celestial objects that exist outside our solar system such as nebulae, star clusters, and galaxies. Back on Earth - Landscape: Images that depict a feature of astronomical interest as a prominent feature and elements such as nature, land or water. Back on Earth - Landmark: Images that depict a feature of astronomical interest as a prominent feature and elements such as cityscapes, buildings, houses, historical structures or monuments. Entries will be judged by Alan Betson, The Irish Times, PPI Press Photographer of the Year; Michael McCreary, President, Irish Astronomical Society; Professor Peter Gallagher, Senior Professor and Head of Astronomy and Astrophysics at DIAS; and Dr Lisa McNamee, Co-Founder, Space Medicine Ireland. Launching the competition today, Dr. Eucharia Meehan, CEO and Registrar of DIAS, said: "This is the fifth year of DIAS 'Reach for the Stars' and this year we're making one big change to the competition. In opening the smartphone category to U18s we hope to encourage the curiosity and interest of young people in the night sky, and of the many astronomical events and wonders on show. Mobile phones have such great cameras today making astrophotography a really accessible activity and we can't wait to see what they submit". "Chair of the judging panel and Director of DIAS Dunsink Observatory, Professor Peter Gallagher said: "People have a natural interest and deep curiosity about the stars and the planets. The images captured each year are breathtaking and give us an insight into the beauty of the night sky. In recent times, the northern lights have been visible from Ireland, and so we look forward to seeing photographs that capture these dancing displays from across the island". Reach for the Stars Competition Details Entrants may submit up to two images per category to the competition. The deadline for entries is 5pm, 04 June 2025. All entries will be screened by a shortlisting panel to ensure they meet the eligibility criteria. The shortlisted images in each category will then go forward for consideration by the judging panel and for an online public vote on reachforthestars.ie.

In the second episode, Dr. Mimi Haddad meets with Rev. Dr. Aída Besançon Spencer to explore key ways Scripture goes against the grain of culture. While some scholars uphold Bible cultural as the moral standard, Aída encouraged readers to begin in the New Testament. For example, in the story of Martha and Mary (Luke 10:38-42), Martha was anxious that Mary would help her serve the disciples a meal. But Jesus said, “Martha, Martha … You are worried and upset about many things, but few things are needed—or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.” Jesus reversed women's priorities from domestic spheres to theological spheres: learn God's truth. Paul also said, in 1 Tim 2:11, “A woman should learn in quietness (silence) and full submission.” Insisting on women's silence was/is a to call women to learn as the theological scholars (Rabbis) did at the time of Christ, in silence—with rapt focus. Aída believes we need more scholarly reflection on women and silence in Scripture. Aída ends with a warning to always view people as created in God's image and considers passages also embrace the shared dignity and agency of women. Reflecting on the marginalization for Native Americans who were accused of and punished for alleged idol worship, by white colonizes who believed they were given the US given as theocracy, Aída and her husband William David Spencer address both topic in a powerful article titled, Calling on God or Colonial Oppression. Aída addresses the leadership of women in the early church, with a focus on context. Whereas women's leadership in Ephesus was different from women in other contexts, like women planting churches like Lydia in Greece. Aída ends by reflecting on Helen Barrett Montgomery (1861-1934) was elected the first president of national Woman's American Baptist Foreign Mission Society. She was also elected the first president (and woman) of an American denomination, the Northern Baptist Convention in 1920. She's also the first woman to translate the New Testament in 1924. Her translation of Roman 16:1-3—interpreted Pheobe as a “minister” and “overseer,” yet it has taken so very long for other translators to see the same biblical truth (in 1843). Barrett Montgonery's The New Testament in Modern English was republished in 1952, and translated Romans 16:1-2: “I commend to you our sister Phoebe, who is a minister of the church at Cenchreae. I beg you to give her a Christian welcome, as the saints should, and to assist her in any matter in which she may have need of you. for she herself has been made an overseer to many people, including myself.” Prostateo, the verb meaning to be leader or ruler of, hold office, authority for providing, regent (Liddell & Scott's classical dictionary). Guest Bio Rev. Dr. Aída Besançon Spencer, Ph.D., Th.M., M.Div., is Senior Professor of New Testament at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary, S. Hamilton, MA. Born and reared in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, she has served as community organizer, minister, and educator in a variety of urban and suburban settings. She has over 200 publications, including 20 books, among these are commentaries of James, 1 Timothy, 2 Timothy, Titus, 1 Peter, and 2 Corinthians and books encouraging women in leadership, such as Beyond the Curse: Women Called to Ministry, Global Voices on Biblical Equality, Christian Egalitarian Leadership, The Goddess Revival: A Biblical Response to Goddess Spirituality, Marriage at the Crossroads, and the novel Cave of Little Faces. An ordained Presbyterian minister, she is married to the Rev. Dr. William David Spencer. Their blog is entitled Applying Biblical Truths Today. They have one adult son, Stephen. The history of Baptists in the United States is a long and convoluted story of victory and failure, unity and division, momentum, and decline. But, if we pay attention to the stories of those individual leaders within the movement, we discover a very important lesson – namely, that when men are full of faith in God and his word, and fearlessly preach it, they can be mightily used for the kingdom of God. Conversely, men who trade truth for pragmatism or divide the body of Christ for their own righteous causes, will often do more to harm the kingdom then Today we have invited O. S. Hawkins, former pastor of First Baptist Church in Dallas, Texas and the Chancellor and Senior Professor of Pastoral Ministry and Evangelism at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary to discuss two historic Baptist pastors that serve to help us heed these lessons.Hawkins is the author of over 50 books, including the book we will be considering today, In the Name of God: The Colliding Lives, Legends and Legacies of J. Frank Norris and George W. Truett.Visit https://www.lfbi.org/learnmore

Episode 3: Innovating urban governance: the Creative Bureaucrat Does creativity have a place in City Hall? The idea that bureaucracy should or can be creative certainly runs counter to common ideas we have of city government. But recently, that has begun to change. Innovation in city governance is being recast as ‘creative problem solving'. Drawing on stories from city governments around the world, in this third episode of ‘Innovating Cities', Tom Baker and Pauline McGuirk discuss what it takes to build creative capacity within bureaucracies. Tom Baker is Associate Professor in the School of Environment, University of Auckland. His research focuses on how public policies are made and implemented, addressing social, institutional, ideological and spatial dimensions. Pauline McGuirk is Senior Professor of urban geography and Director of the Australian Centre for Culture, Environment, Society and Space, University of Wollongong. Her work revolves around critical studies of urban governance, its changing geographies, material practices and politics, and the differential implications for urban places, communities, subjectivities and power. Episode 1: Innovating urban governance: the work of Innovation Units In this first episode in the Innovating Cities Series, Pauline McGuirk and Tom Baker discuss what innovating city governance means and explore one key example of urban governance innovation in practice: innovation units. Drawing from research on innovation units in the United States, Europe and Australia, the team tackles questions around how these innovation units work, what they hope to achieve, and the challenges they encounter in practice. The episode also raises wider questions about the longer termed implications of working in ‘innovation mode' for urban governance. Guests Pauline McGuirk is Senior Professor of urban geography and Director of the Australian Centre for Culture, Environment, Society and Space, University of Wollongong. Tom Baker is Associate Professor in the School of Environment, University of Auckland. Thanks to our special guests Eliza Erickson (former Director of Innovation and Strategy, Office of Innovation and Technology, City of Philadelphia); James Corless (Executive Director, Sacramento Area Council of Governments); Nico Diaz Amigo (Chief Innovation & Data Officer Office of Accountability, Performance, & Innovation, City of Syracuse); and Shane Waring (Lead Dublin Beta Lab). Innovating Cities Series Across the series of episodes the Innovating Urban Governance team will be exploring these questions in conversation with practitioners from around the world about their insights in to the work of innovating city governance and its implications

Al Roxburgh and Jenny Sinclair meet Mark Lau Branson (Pasadena, California USA) to reflect on the concrete ways he has borne witness to the Gospel in his community and multi-ethnic church in a disruptive society. Mark has a unique gift of connecting the local with the broader changes in society. He is a Senior Professor of Practical Theology at Fuller Theological Seminary, serves as Senior Community Engagement Strategist on the Advisory Board of CHERP Solar Works, and participates in his local church. Jenny and Al chat with Mark about his sense of the unraveling, and we get a picture of how this looks in the cultures and the churches across the USA. Are we still successful if our evangelism sees little or no conversions? How do we gauge our evangelism effectiveness, especially if it leads to hatred and societal ostracism? When did evangelism become so mushy and pragmatic, and how do we get back to a biblical approach? Western Christianity had a significant influence on the culture for several centuries. It is accustomed to “success” in some degree or another. Today it is no longer that way. When it comes to evangelism, what do we do in light of such circumstances? Modern evangelism is rife with gimmicks and the wisdom of man. It wasn't always this way, so what happened and where do we go from here? By looking at the Scriptures and church history, these are the questions answered in this book. Now more than ever we must trust in God's Word—not only for how to do evangelism, but to know what will happen to those who evangelize. Ryan Denton has given us an essential handbook on evangelism that is like eating frozen concentrated orange juice straight from the cylinder. Dr. Tom J. Deep Calls for LifeGood health is not something to take for granted. Just ask Dr. Chuck Elliott, Senior Professor of Communication at Cedarville University. Throughout his life, he's been a model of good health. That was until he began experiencing severe headaches and uncontrollable high blood pressure while teaching in Hong Kong. Ultimately, the high blood pressure left significant damage to Chuck's kidneys, and two years ago, doctors noticed a significant change in his health. He was in the beginning stages of kidney failure. Just one year later in May 2022, Chuck's kidneys were in full-blown failure, causing him to need dialysis — nine hours every day. With the reality of needing a kidney to survive, Chuck was in a difficult position. How does a person go about getting a new kidney? It's not like Chuck to share his situation with anyone, let alone ask someone if they would donate a kidney to him. This was an uncomfortable situation for someone who made his life as a communications professor. Well, several Cedarville University students were presented with class projects that could help Chuck in his quest of a new kidney. Enter Deep Calls for Life, a project headed by a team of marketing and communication students. Their sole purpose was to create a social media campaign that would communicate Chuck's health crisis and his need of a kidney transplant — preferably from a live donor — for their beloved professor. As part of a virtual communication class project, the students created a social media campaign intended to bring hope to the Cedarville professor, and, possibly someone who could provide the perfect kidney for Chuck. ---------And now, several months later, Cedarville Stories Podcast is please to share good news about Chuck Elliott!Listen here to learn more about Chuck's story and the answer to many prayers on the Cedarville Stories Podcast.

In this episode, Robert and I discussed how cinema can feed our spiritual growth. One of the foremost figures on the subject of theology and film, Robert shared his thoughts on an array of issues, from how the movies have influenced the public's perception of Christianity to the ways film can inspire theological reflection. We also talked about the challenges posed by new technologies that have influenced the way we watch films in our current digital age.
