This week, we are operating on a generally elevated baseline of anxiety. Between hosting an 11-kid birthday party with a piñata, Erin's washing machine dying right when she needs to wash couch cushion covers, and a slammed hand in a truck door, the stress is very real. We crack open a full sugar Red Bull and a Spindrift to try and get through it. We kick things off with some "anti-motivation" for your hot summer runs: when the wind and heat are getting you down, just remember that you could be enduring 36 hours of labor or passing a kidney stone. We also vent our absolute rage over our posture after seeing photos of our rounded shoulders in the new Team Struggle Run shirts. Desk life and side-sleeping are clearly taking a toll, but we do have some positive fitness updates, including Erin mastering the dead hang and building sturdy wiffle ball strength through her pull up training. Next, we go on a massive rant about app registration requirements. We are completely sick of immediate pop-ups, cookie preferences, and forced account creations. Honestly, it would be easier to just hand-deliver our passwords, blood tests, and retinas straight to Jeff Bezos so he can just have all our data once and for all. We celebrate our former podcast guest and track-and-field Paralympian, Beatriz Hatz, who is making history as the first differently-abled contestant on Love Island. We also touch on the crazy drama of a local police officer quitting his force to join the same show. We then dive into a dedicated FIFA segment, covering three wild soccer stories. First, there's an alleged ban on outside water bottles that will force fans to buy overpriced water in the blistering heat. (I think FIFA recently repealed this, but we recorded before that.) We also discuss Heineken's clever "solo fan" commercial featuring Xavi, which leads us to admit we would absolutely fail to recognize a celebrity like Bad Bunny if he sat next to us undercover. To wrap up the sports talk, we share a wholesome video breakdown of the Japanese national team arriving in Nuevo Leon, Mexico, in matching suits to receive traditional rancher hats from the governor. Moving into pop culture, we give a behind-the-scenes look at how TMZ actually gets the scoop, from keeping producers stationed daily at hospitals and courthouses to instantly calling everyone from mailmen to neighbors when news breaks. We also issue a quick reality TV PSA regarding Amanda Batula from Summer House: beta blockers are for lowering your heart rate during fight-or-flight moments, not for zoning out like benzos. For our "No Bad, No Sad" segment, we review arguably our best viral video yet, a corporate dad letting his inner DJ out on the turntables at a Guitar Center with his daughter. I have to be honest — when I put out the casting call for people with interesting jobs, I wasn't expecting anything quite like this. Alexandra Sunshine is a senior editor at Kensington Books and, as she describes herself, is the number one romantic editor in the U.S. right now — meaning she has acquired more projects in the romantic genre than anyone else in the country. And yes, "romantasy" means exactly what you think it means: fantasy worlds, magical creatures, swords and crowns... and a lot of very explicit sex.In this conversation, Alex takes me on a full tour of the spicy book world — from the BookTok explosion that completely disrupted publishing, to the sub-genres you didn't know existed (shifter romance, omegaverse, dark romance, "why choose"... we get into all of it). We talk about why women are devouring these books right now, what it says about female sexuality and modern relationships, and why the "touch her and die" trope is basically the ultimate female fantasy. We also get into the surprisingly funny realities of her job: copy editors fact-checking whether a sex position is physically possible, boardroom conversations about explicit content, and the "chili pepper scale" that her sales team ultimately rejected. We also ended up having a really honest conversation about my own book (the psychological thriller I'm currently working on), and Alex gave some genuinely great advice for anyone who's been sitting on a story idea and hasn't started yet.Follow Alex: https://www.instagram.com/Alexhsunshine/Follow Kensington Books: https://www.instagram.com/kensingtonbooks/Alex's Book RecommendationsRain of Shadows and Endings by Melissa Roehrich: https://amzn.to/4cZJg6A Chasing the Wild by Elliott Rose: https://amzn.to/4d5ZcEeChasing the Ring by Lauren Rowe: https://amzn.to/4cQZIY7Chasing the Rush by Lauren Rowe: https://amzn.to/4tMkwWBSponsors:Ogee: Thanks to today's sponsor, Ogee: A higher standard for beauty. Nation – Ashley talks about her deep ties to New York City and a life largely spent on the road for work. She also shares her path into CPG from a master's in higher education and then into the supplement world and applied lessons from her experience to B.T.R., Ashley's discusses evolution as a spokesperson and her belief that brands need a consistent "face," explains B.T.R.'s origin story and how losing both parents to rare cancers before age 30 shaped her mission and her decision to avoid natural flavors. She describes how trust and community grew "organically" through direct customer engagement and helps generate retail discovery and online reorders across channels. She also details how B.T.R. approaches growth with constant iteration while keeping affordability and velocity in mind, and shares practical learnings on Meta advertising and how to pair digital attribution with retail data stories to win new accounts. Once Upon a Farm is officially public — and it could mark a turning point for better-for-you brands. In this episode, the hosts break down the baby food company's $198 million IPO, what its $724 million valuation signals for the CPG landscape, and why going public may be emerging as a viable alternative to traditional acquisition. Is this the start of a new era for mission-driven food brands looking to scale on their own terms? Plus, they dig into the growing battle over how "healthy" gets defined at retail. Kroger adopted FoodHealth's nutrient scoring system, which aims to guide shoppers with a balanced approach to nutrient density and ingredient quality. Meanwhile, the Non-GMO Project's stricter Non-UPF Verified certification draws a hard line against processed oils, gums, and natural flavors. Are these systems complementary, competitive, or just confusing? Show notes: 0:23: Fiber Bowl. AMA In MIA. OFRM's IPO. UPF, Maybe Or No? A Burst Of Mayo, Protein & Powder. –  The hosts kick things off with lighthearted Super Bowl banter and a recap of their game-day food spreads before previewing the upcoming Taste Radio Miami Meetup at Casa La Rubia on Feb. 18. The team highlights event features including live podcast interviews, networking, brand sampling, and a new "Ask Me Anything" table hosted by Atomos Strategic Marketing, encouraging founders and industry professionals to attend. The conversation then shifts to industry news, notably Once Upon a Farm's IPO, which raised $198 million and valued the baby and kids food brand at over $724 million. The hosts discuss the rarity of successful CPG IPOs, the tradeoffs between going public and selling to a strategic buyer, and what the move could signal for other better-for-you brands. From there, they explore evolving nutrition standards, comparing FoodHealth's nutrient scoring system with the stricter Non-UPF Verified certification from the Non-GMO Project, touching on hot-button topics like processed oils, natural flavors, and consumer education. The episode also features commentary on innovative products such as Graza's olive oil mayonnaise strategy, protein soda from Joyburst, protein-enhanced fruit spreads from BamJam, and the straightforward drink mix brand Fave. Brands in this episode: Royo Bread, Once Upon a Farm, Annie's, Vita Coco, Bai, Graza, Koia, Joyburst, BamJam, Drippy, Dappie, Fave, BTR Nation, Cadence, Spindrift, Duke's

But a shocking new investigation reveals most brands can't prove it. Dr. Christian Gonzalez reached out to 19 of the biggest bottled water companies with one simple request: show proof your water is tested for PFAS, heavy metals, microplastics, and industrial solvents. The results? Fourteen brands disappeared or flat-out refused to respond. Only FOUR companies could stand behind their claims with real data. This isn't about being picky, it's about protecting your hormones, liver, and nervous system from daily toxic exposure. When you drink contaminated water multiple times a day, you're compounding exposure to chemicals that disrupt your entire system. The hidden toxins lurking in "clean" bottled water: • PFAS (Forever Chemicals) linked to hormonal imbalance, reduced sperm quality, and thyroid disruption • Microplastics found in up to 93% of bottled water globally, leaching endocrine-disrupting phthalates and BPA • Heavy metals like arsenic and lead from contaminated sources or outdated bottling systems • VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds) including dry cleaning solvents and gasoline additives from industrial runoff • Toxic packaging that makes the bottle itself part of the problem In this episode, Dr. Christian Gonzalez exposes the 2025 Bottled Water Audit and reveals: • The full list of 19 brands tested—and which ones refused to respond • The ONLY 4 bottled water brands that passed with transparency and clean testing • Why major names like Evian, Fiji, Spindrift, and Liquid Death couldn't (or wouldn't) provide proof • The marketing manipulation behind "pure" and "spring" water labels • How to identify truly clean water and protect yourself from daily contamination • The endocrine disruption, liver burden, and nervous system damage caused by chronic water toxin exposure This episode goes beyond hydration. It's about taking back control of what you put in your body every single day, and demanding transparency from an industry built on marketing mystique, notreal science. Today I'm joined by Evan Harrison CEO of Kiss The Ground.Regenerative Agriculture is a powerful growing movement, which is so much more than simply a way for farmers to farm. It is a reconnection for all of us to the food we are consuming and the soil beneath our feet.  It offers us a truly viable solution for both personal and planetary health, a more prosperous life for the farmers who feed us and steward the land and more nutrient dense foods available in our local communities, which is the foundation to improving our own health and wellbeing. There are 4 core principles to Regenerative agriculture but it doesn't have to be all or nothing, it is an ecosystem approach where we learn to listen, work with and respond to nature, it is not new, drawing on the practices from Indigenous people. It is already having an incredible impact on our health and environment. Evan reminds us it's important to meet people where they are and share information that will excite and inspire them. Kiss the Ground have an incredible diversity of resources to support consumers to find healthier food but also to share the stories of the farmers who are writing a new story in which both nature and humans can thrive. Learn more about  EvanEvan Harrison is the CEO of Kiss the Ground, the leading nonprofit promoting Regeneration and healthy soil as a viable solution for human and planetary wellness. Ten years ago, the idea of canned milk powering a fast-growing brand might have seemed far-fetched. And yet, Slate – which recently announced $23 million in fresh funding – has proven just how powerful a novel concept can be. What can CPG founders – and the industry at large – learn from its rise? The hosts also look back on an unforgettable meetup in San Francisco, where industry veterans, insiders, and ambitious early-stage founders came together in a high-energy atmosphere. Show notes: 0:25: SpearsTok. S.F. Straightaway. Soaring Slate. Aggressive Snacks & Sprinkles. — The show kicks off with banter about AI job titles and algorithm-driven social media feeds, before the hosts reflect on the energy of Taste Radio's recent San Francisco meetup and how the event fostered valuable industry connections and spotlighted emerging brands. They also preview the show's London meetup on October 2 as well as BevNET's Live events in December. The hosts then turn their attention to a $23M funding round for milk-based protein beverage platform Slate, which sparked a deeper conversation about brand evolution, product positioning and the importance of timing in industry success. They also discuss a plant-based meat snack brand with “aggressive” branding. Ray highlights Sprinkles' new cupcake bites, John gulps Zico's organic coconut water, Mike touts THC and turmeric drinks and Jacqui spotlights an innovative CPG brand designed for women. Brands in this episode: Slate, Spindrift, Health-Ade, Trip, In Good Taste Wines, Slapp, Dokkaebeer, Kechi, Mindful, Jules Matcha, Fort Point, Standard Deviant, Straightaway Cocktails, Plift, MixMix, KiuKiu, Uncle Matt's, ZICO, Drink Folks, Q Drinks, Benni Pops, Sprinkles, Rootless, AGRO, Yasso, Forager Project, Uncracked, Yerba Madre

From college campuses to cannabis aisles, this episode explores how emerging CPG brands are carving out space in crowded categories. The hosts unpack Better Sour's rapid retail expansion – including an exclusive Sprouts flavor and placement on United Airlines – while also spotlighting Toom's strategic refresh that helped turn a niche garlic dip into a national brand. Plus, the challenges of adaptogen overload, and how design influences consumer trust. Show notes: 0:15: Joe Who? Better Breakfast. Too(m) Good. Old Gold? Stock & Shot. Review & Win. – Jacqui's unfamiliarity with football legend Joe Montana sparks lighthearted banter about generational divides and the pitfalls of marketing to “old men.” While Mike is understandably deflated by the moment, he and Ray quickly pivot to recap a recent breakfast with the co-founders of Better Sour, a better-for-you gummy brand. The brand has secured new retail placements at Boston University, Total Wine, United Airlines, and is gearing up to launch an exclusive tart cherry flavor at Sprouts. The hosts also shine a spotlight on Toom, a garlic dip brand led by founder Matt Joyce, and commend his deliberate, slow-growth strategy. Later in the episode, the conversation turns to the relevance of endorsements from athletes of past eras and whether they still hold sway with today's consumers. The hosts also sample a range of new THC and functional beverages from brands including Woodstock, Tonik, and Golden Root. Ray gives a special shoutout to Elephant Green Chili Chutney, a zesty new condiment featured on Taste Radio's Elevator Talk series. The episode wraps with a call for listeners to review the podcast, sweetened with the promise of free T-shirts in return. Brands in this episode: Better Sour, Poppi, Toom, Yaza, Gold Bar Distillery, Spindrift, Woodstock, Golden Root, Tonik, Elephant Green Chutney

Kevin McGee used his law degree more than he expected when his family took over legacy California craft brewery Anderson Valley Brewing Company (AVBC), including in legal battles over distribution rights.    Now that the family has sold the brewery,  a move announced in March, McGee is putting his degree to use full time.    On the latest edition of the Brewbound Podcast, McGee recounts recent franchise law cases and victories in the Golden State and shares his expectations for more challenges to craft brewers' ability to switch distributors in the future.    McGee, who acted as AVBC's president and CEO, also shares when he and his family knew it was the right time to sell the brewery. He explains what brewery owners thinking about selling need to consider, how they should prepare and what the current buyer market looks like.   Before the conversation, Brewbound editor Justin Kendall and senior reporter Zoe Licata discuss Anheuser-Busch InBev's sale of its New York City wholly owned distributor to Southern Glazer's Wine and Spirits and why they believe more moves are on the way.   Plus, Justin and Zoe play Another Round or Tabbing Out on Spindrift pulling the plug on its spiked seltzer brand and the crossover bev-alc market.

In one of the strangest scandals to hit the CPG world, BetterBrand, the startup behind the high-protein, low-carb “Better Bagel,”  is now facing lawsuits, unpaid debts… and a missing founder. The hosts weigh in on the chaos surrounding entrepreneur Aimee Yang and her calamitous company. They also discuss a new, seemingly BFY beverage alcohol segment and why protein donuts deserve better ingredients. Show notes: 0:35: Hoste-ing In Chicago. Moldy, Mired, Messy. A Refreshing ABV?
