Chris Matts used his extensive knowledge of financial derivatives to develop an approach on how to deal with decision-making and named it real options. Unlike the "traditional" Real Options approach that is based on Black-Scholes, his approach avoids complex mathematics and focuses on the practical implications of options. His model teaches us to understand the timing of decision-making and discover new options that were never appreciated. Chris teamed up with Olav Maassen and Chris Geary to create the first business graphic novel about managing risk on projects. In the novel, the main character Rose Randall learns how to apply the real options approach to the way she manages her new project. He joins Ryan Shriver to discuss risk management, Real Options, how to improve decision making, key project management tools, and so much more. I liked Melissa’s description of product managers as bad idea terminators. I see this as more of a behavior during the convergent thinking phase of product design. I also liked her description of real options, which I have recently been reading about in the book Commitment by Olav Maassen, Chris Matts, and Chris Geary. Liz told a story about how conference organizers gave themselves options by over-ordering on the engraved trophies. The very affecting second half of this podcast episode was focused on the #metoo movement. Joe and Alex talked about how she applies her training in linguistics in her career in software testing. It turns out that such training was actually helpful as it taught her how to move back and forth between detailed and abstract ways of thinking. They got into a discussion of test data management, which Alex likened to continuous integration because it is something that starts out being painful when you don’t address it often enough or when you push it onto the testers and it becomes easier the more often you pay attention to it and when you make it everyone’s responsibility. Chris Geary is an MPP1 at the Harvard Kennedy School. Chris was a public school teacher in Colorado and subsequently worked on Mike Johnston’s 2018 Colorado gubernatorial campaign. Chris shares his experiences and perspectives on the charter school debate, systematic inequality and racism, and putting students first in education policy. “Everyone always says the system is broken, but the system is actually doing exactly what it was designed to do: create enduring inequality. Don’t assume there’s a simple policy solution to centuries of racism in our educational system or that there’s going to be some little innovation you can tap into. But rather go connect with someone who’s been really negatively affected by systematic oppression and go learn from their perspective.”
