Types of moving kitchens have existed for generations. After all, people can't always make it home for lunch, BUT, the first real “food truck” dates back to those rooting tooting days of cowboys and cowgirls - the Wild West. Now, of course, they didn't have cars back then, or trucks, so these “Mobile Kitchens” were called Chuckwagons. Tune in to find out all about them!

Welcome to the MWSA Podcast for Thursday, June 17th. We begin with the continuing conversation on racism in Alberta. We hear the personal experience of Author and Lawyer, Dany Assaf. Dany explains the motivation behind his book “Say Please & Thank You & Stand In Line: One man's story of what makes Canada so special – and how to keep it that way.” Earlier this week we got more details about what Stampede 2021 will look like, but what about Stampede events that normally happen around town off of Stampede Park? We catch up with Global News Reporter Sarah Offin. We know that this year's Stampede won't include the Chuckwagons, but the wagons are still going to ‘roar' in 2021. We get details on the competition that'll take place next month in High River from the Vice President of the High River Agricultural Society. Looking to keep the kids busy this summer? We get suggestions on Summer Camp options available in the city from Ellen Percival, Editor of “Calgary's Child” magazine. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Mention Chuckwagon Racing and it is bound to get the heart pumping!! This is a fast paced, exhilarating discipline that marries the traditions of our western heritage with todays sport performance horses. It has many fans and loyal supporters that follow the wagons around the circuit of Western Canada throughout the spring and summer. The last two years have been difficult for the wagon families, as it has been for many of us, but with families to support and dozens of horses on top of all that, it has been awesome to see them able to start racing again this summer! With so many horses that go down the road with them, they require extensive care. It was great to be able to sit down with two individuals who work diligently on every aspect of their programs. From conditioning, to feed, to herd management, to pre and post care routines and more, Chad and Caitlin opened their doors to us as we sat down to talk all things Chuckwagons. Chad and Caitlin Fike of Chad Fike Chuckwagon Racing, have been living this life since they were born. Both raised in the industry, Chad as a 4th generation chuckwagon family and Caitlin as a daughter of a racehorse trainer, they take it all to heart. This is a family affair and requires everyone to pitch in to make it all happen. For more information on Chad Fike Chuckwagon Racing, check out their social media on Facebook under the same handle, or Instagram @cfikechuckwagon. I love when random events and experiences not only leave you feeling excited (heck, thrilled!), they also offer valuable opportunities for lessons!Such was my experience at this year's Calgary Stampede. Now, for those of you who may not know, Calgary Stampede is a 10 event centred around western events (think full on rodeo). There's bull- and bronc-riding, cowboy-styled horsemanship challenges, heavy horse pulls, barrel racing, and of course, chuck wagon racing (and so much more!!).Stampede is more than just the western events however. There's naturally lots of food trucks, rides, games, trade shows, demonstrations and lots and lots of concerts and party halls. Really, the entire city shuts down for Stampede - it's a big freakin' deal. And I love every minute of it.This year I had the fabulous opportunity to be hosted to the Stampede, and, for the first time EVER, go to the chuck wagon races and the grandstand show!To say I was excited is putting it mildly. As I was driving home afterward and thinking about all that I experienced, I began to see a number of takeaways that I wanted to share with you.So today's episode talks about my 5 Takeaways from the Calgary Stampede, touching on things like:>The (super) loaded topic of chuck wagon racing - not everyone is on board>Personal growth reminders and practices I had while watching horses race through dirt>A highly valuable exercise I tried in picking the winners for each heat (and how I aim to practice more of that in my business!)>Chuck wagon horses, aka: competitors, and the idea that 'how you do one thing is how you do everything'And so much more! I love today's episode and I trust you'll gain a TON of value from it!

This Food Non-Fiction podcast episode tells the history of food trucks. The forerunners to food trucks are the chuckwagons of the cowboy cattle drives and the pushcarts of busy cities. Chuckwagons were invented by Charles Goodnight in 1866 to feed cowboys during long cattle drives that sometimes lasted for months. Chuckwagon cooks were called "cookies" and they would wake up bright and early to stoke a fire with firewood from the chuckwagon and prepare food with surfaces and supplies provided by the chuckwagon. Pushcarts have been around for ages and have a fascinating history of clashes with law enforcement. Since the 1600's New York has passed several laws to try and manage pushcart vendors and the current food truck laws are reminiscent of the pushcart laws. The food truck laws in New York haven't been changed since 1965 and the NYC Food Truck Association is pushing for changes to make the laws more modern. We interviewed 2 food truck owners in Durham - Saltbox Seafood Joint and Tootie. They gave us on insight on the business of food trucks.
