Across the globe and in the U.S., environmental crises loom large and threaten our most vulnerable populations.  “There's a lot of dying that's happening now, and it's primarily among poor, Black and Brown people,” says Dr. Cherly Holder, who's on a personal mission to inspire clinicians to act on climate change.  Holder explains that a person's health and well-being is directly impacted by the environment they're surrounded by. “In celebrating and recognizing the environment, we recognize that this is how we define humanity, and how we create the environment for us to grow and thrive,” she says. In honor of Earth Day, which is coming up this month, we're dipping into our archives to bring you a conversation with Dr. Cheryl Holder. She's now retired, but at the time this conversation was recorded and produced for the Health Disparities podcast in 2021, Dr. Holder was serving as the Interim Associate Dean for Diversity, Equity and Inclusivity and Community Initiatives, and associate professor at the Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine, Florida International University.  This episode was originally published in 2021 with host Elise Tolbert. Why the 1960s Damaged the American Dream with Tim Goeglein

This week Roger welcomes Tim Goeglein, the vice president of external and government relations for Focus on the Family, a Christian ministry and nonprofit organization. They discuss how the cultural and moral shifts of the 1960s shaped many of the challenges American society faces today, how the seeds for these changes were planted earlier in the 20th century by progressives like Woodrow Wilson and John Dewey and how the Great Society programs of the 1960s (despite good intentions) led to unintended consequences that undermined traditional American societal institutions. Plus, why the path forward lies in grassroots efforts to rebuild civic institutions at the local level rather than relying on top-down government solutions.Prior to joining Focus on the Family, Goeglein was a special assistant to President George W. Bush and deputy director of the White House Office of Public Liaison, conducting outreach for conservative and faith-based groups. During his White House tenure, he played an integral role in nominating Supreme Court justices Samuel Alito and John G. Roberts and was also integral in helping to establish the Office of Faith-Based and Community Initiatives. He's written four books, his latest title being, “Stumbling Toward Utopia: How the 1960s Turned Into a National Nightmare and How We Can Revive the American Dream,” which was published in September of 2024 by Fidelis Publishing. The Liberty + Leadership Podcast is hosted by TFAS president Roger Ream and produced by Podville Media. In this episode of the Glowing Older podcast, host Nancy Griffin interviews Cate O'Brien, MPH, PhD, Senior Vice President of Mather Institute and Community Initiatives, discussing the organization's mission to improve the lives of older adults through innovative research and community initiatives. They explore various topics including the challenges faced by Generation X, the importance of planning for solo agers, the role of mindfulness in aging well, and emerging trends in person-centered wellness.  About Cate  Cate O'Brien, MPH, PhD, joined Mather as a Senior Research Associate in 2005. She leads the Institute's research team to identify, develop, and conduct research programs in wellness and engagement across the aging services field. She also conducts and disseminates various research projects and establishes partnerships with universities to expand Mather's reach and enhance the Institute's reputation as a thought leader. Cate collaborates with all areas of Mather to evaluate the impact of internal initiatives. Cate also leads the Community Initiatives team in developing and implementing strategies to grow the number of older adults served through virtual and in-person programs, such as the popular D.I.T. (Do It Together) Creative Art Kits.  Cate earned a Master of Arts degree in Cultural Anthropology from University of California, San Diego; a Master's in Public Health (epidemiology) from San Diego State University; and a PhD in public health and community health sciences from the University of Illinois, Chicago. Key Takeaways Mather Institute focuses on creating ways to age well. Mather's three areas of aging services include: four senior living communities, community initiatives and the Mather Institute. Solo agers often lack support and planning for aging. Nearly one third (27%) of people 60 and older qualify as solo agers. Mather Institute's research on Generation X spans three years. Year one focused on Gen X's top three priorities: family, career, and health. Year two took a deep dive into health and wellness, and year three will focus on the workforce. Mather's research shows Gen Xers experiencing more stress in their lives than Boomers, which could be a result of the sandwich generation caring for kids and parents and also related to finances. Non-clinical interventions like social prescriptions and nature prescriptions are proven to improve health and wellness.

In this episode of *Art Heals All Wounds*, I sit down with Jimmy Ramirez, an artist and high school teacher from Oakley, California. We talk about Jimmy's film Above Ground, which delves into the ways that streams and creeks in Oakland have been ‘entombed' in culverts in Oakland, California. We also discuss re-imagining our relationship to water.**Key Topics Discussed:** 1. **Discovery of Hidden Waterways**:   - My personal experience of discovering the hidden Providence River during my college years in Providence, Rhode Island, drawing a parallel to the hidden creeks of Oakland. 2. **Jimmy's Film "Above Ground"**:   - The film explores how Oakland has buried many of its natural waterways under concrete, a practice known as "entombing." This impacts local ecosystems previously supporting species like salmon and trout. 3. **Personal Connection to Peralta Creek**:   - Jimmy discusses his family's history with Peralta Creek in Fruitvale, Oakland, emphasizing how urban development has drastically altered the waterway. 4. **Impact of Water Management Practices**:   - Water management practices designed to prevent flooding have dried out natural water bodies despite heavy rainfalls, disrupting ecological balance. 5. **Historical Decisions and Urban Planning**:   - The conversation addresses the historical decisions to bury natural waterways and how early urban planning overlooked long-term environmental impacts. 6. **Environmental and Mental Health Implications**:   - We discuss the concept of "slow violence" where the lack of natural elements in urban areas contributes to mental health issues and community stress. 7. **Neighborhood Disparities**:   - Disparities between wealthier neighborhoods with more greenery and lower-income areas in Oakland are highlighted, showing the uneven distribution of environmental resources. 8. **Community Initiatives and Successes**:   - Some residents have successfully removed culverts to restore natural water flow, though legal ambiguities persist. 9. **Government and Political Dynamics**:   - Oakland officials have shown interest in Jimmy's film to raise awareness about these environmental issues, and the conversation touches on the politicized nature of water management in California. 10. **Reimagining Water Use**:    - Jimmy advocates for a collectivist approach to water systems, inspired by indigenous wisdom, contrasting America's individualistic mindset. 11. **Challenges and Resistance**:    - Addressing restrictive regulations around rainwater collection and gray water reuse, and how contractors are now more conscious about concreting over backyards. 12. **Future Projects and Art's Role**:    - Jimmy discusses future projects and the significance of art in processing climate grief and inspiring change. He also expresses gratitude for support from the California Arts Council. **Closing Thoughts and Listener Engagement:**Don't forget to go to my website and leave me YOUR story of belonging to feature on a future episode!Buy Me a Coffee!Follow Jimmy! InstagramLinkedInFollow Me!●      My Instagram&

Ask yourself: “What is the magic of my brand?” Every brand has it. It's the special offering your company has that no other one does. That's where you focus the message of your content. And it's one of the things we're talking about today. In this episode, we're learning from the magic of the world of Disney. With the help of our special guest, Domo CMO Mark Boothe, we'll talk about working your magic, focusing on feeling, and the power of distribution.About our guest, Mark BootheMark Boothe is Chief Marketing Officer at Domo. Mark brings over 15 years of diverse marketing experience and is passionate about driving Domo's business growth through marketing initiatives. His mission is to empower all Domo customers and prospects with the insights and tools they need to make better business decisions and achieve their goals. In his previous role as VP of Community, Partner, and Field Marketing, Mark and his teams established new and strengthened existing programs to address customer pain points and create a greater sense of community. They also executed campaigns, programs and events that showcase the value of the Domo platform. Before joining Domo, Mark spent more than 10 years working in customer relations and marketing at Adobe and worked at Instructure as its senior director of customer marketing. He received his MBA from Utah State University and a bachelor's degree from Brigham Young University. Outside of work, Mark enjoys spending time with his family and traveling. What B2B Companies Can Learn From Disney:Work your magic. Whatever the magic is that your brand has, that magic that sets you apart from competitors - make that the focus of your content. Mark says, “For Domo specifically, what's our magic? We're really, really good at helping people to use data effectively. We can help them make accessible interactions and interactive automations and simple integrations. We help people get value out of their data. And so for us, that's what the magic is. So we have to make that simple. We have to make it easy. We may have to make it understandable and the product has to work. That's what remembering the magic looks like for a software company that's selling visualization and BI and automation software.”Focus on feeling. Does your content feel like it's part of the brand? Does it all evoke the same feeling? Ian says, “One of the things that Disney understands so well is the importance of the property fitting into their overall brand, but that the properties all are standalones. And I think that this is not something that we really understand in marketing. Like, we get obsessed with the colors or the style. We obsess over making it look right instead of feel right. But Disney, the brand is all about the way it makes you feel.”Have a distribution plan for your content. Before you make any content, make sure you have a plan to get it out in the world, and in front of the right people. Mark says, “For so long the phrase has been content is king. But my fight would be that distribution is emperor. Yes, content is really, really important. And it's amazing what you can do with really good content, but you can do a heck of a lot more with really good content that has exceptional distribution behind it. I can do really good things with really bad content that has exceptional distribution strategies and tactics put behind it. The key is, how do you make sure that you're developing and creating and synthesizing really good content that you can then put the right kind of resources behind so that you get it in front of the people that you really care about?”Quotes*”For so long the phrase has been content is king. But my fight would be that distribution is emperor.”*”I'm a big fan of test, test, test, test, test, test, and learn. But you live in a world today where you can make micro optimizations to pieces of content and things. So use the technology and the things that are in place to be able to make the micro changes you need to make content work.”*”Content is everyone's responsibility at this point. No matter what discipline you are in within marketing, you are a content marketer. We get so caught up sometimes then, ‘Hey, this quarter we're going to do X number of blog posts.' Why? To what end? ‘We're going to create this many YouTube videos.' Okay, ‘we're going to create a whole bunch of stuff on TikTok.' Great! Like, what's the purpose? And backing up enough to say, Who's the audience? If your ICP is for a certain amount of these accounts that look like this, and these people who buy like this and need these things, and yet you're talking to all of them in the same way, you're going to fail.”*”Take the time to create really, really good content. We're not in the days anymore of ‘If you build it, they will come.' There is more content generated right now than in any other time. So just to build good content doesn't get the job done. Building good content and then having that distribution strategy and then being willing to make the micro changes you need to, you'll give it a good shot.”*”Don't be afraid to fail sometimes. If failure is, ‘We learned a whole lot of stuff and we won't make that same mistake again,' then it wasn't really failure.”*”Make sure as a marketer, you're staying true to the creative piece of your job, but that you're using data to make sure that it's all a strong reality. Cause I think too often, we can fall to either side, whether it's we're falling too hard on the creative side or we're falling too hard on the data side. And it is, it's an art and a science. So nail both the art and science.”Time Stamps[0:55] Meet Mark Boothe, CMO of Domo[2:33] The Launch of Disney Plus[4:25] Disney Plus Marketing Strategies[7:36] The Impact of Disney Plus on Consumers[18:13] Content and Distribution in B2B Marketing[22:05] Creating Quality Content in Business[22:20] The Importance of Distribution Strategy[22:43] Learning from Failures[22:58] Challenges in Content Creation[25:21] Investing in Brand and Community[27:14] The Role of Community in Customer Retention[28:25] Evaluating Content ROI[29:32] Building a Customer-Centric Community[32:00] The Impact of Community Initiatives[35:50] Balancing Creativity and Data in Marketing[37:57] Advice for other CMOsLinksConnect with Mark on LinkedInLearn more about DomoAbout Remarkable!Remarkable! is created by the team at Caspian Studios, the premier B2B Podcast-as-a-Service company. She emphasizes the importance of self-reflection and examining our own participation in cycles that lead to radicalization. Neumann suggests that changing the media structure and reducing the influence of fear-based news could contribute to a healthier society. She also highlights the need for grassroots efforts within churches and communities to address the underlying factors that contribute to radicalization. Neumann emphasizes the role of the church in providing answers to the unmet needs of belonging and significance, which are key factors in radicalization. She calls for a return to the teachings of Jesus and the practice of love, kindness, and gentleness as a counterexample to the divisive and extremist tendencies in society. Neumann also addresses the role of the church in addressing the rise of Christian extremism and the need to establish norms of kindness, patience, and gentleness. She emphasizes the importance of de-escalating hostility and reducing the number of people susceptible to radicalization. Finally, Neumann discusses the potential consequences of another Trump term, including the empowerment of extremist ideologies and the erosion of guardrails in national security and domestic policy.Buy Kingdom of Rage: The Rise of Christian Extremism and the Path Back to Peace: https://a.co/d/elWZ4IbGuest Bio:Neumann's tenure spans the George W. All Home Care Matters was honored to welcome a distinguished guest, Mr. Jim Towey.     Jim Towey was a trusted advisor and personal friend of Mother Teresa of Calcutta for twelve years and did the first reading at her Mass of Canonization in Saint Peter's Square. He headed the White House Office of Faith-Based and Community Initiatives under George W. In 1996, with Mother Teresa's encouragement, he founded the nonprofit advocacy organization Aging with Dignity and created the Five Wishes advance directive, which has sold over 40 million copies and is used in all fifty states.     Towey met his wife, Mary, in Mother Teresa's Washington, DC, AIDS home, and they have five children and three grandchildren. He continues to provide pro bono legal services for the Missionaries of Charity. His book, To Love and Be Loved: A Personal Portrait of Mother Teresa, was published by Simon and Schuster in September 2022.
