The Spring Election is two short weeks away and on today's show, host Douglas Haynes is in conversation with Madison Metropolitan School District School Board Seat 6 Candidates, challenger Daniella Molle and incumbent Blair Mosner Feltham. They speak about their priorities for the school district, how they would address opportunity gaps, safe learning environments, public funding for schools, student enrollment in the district, and more. School Board Seat 6 Candidate: Daniella Molle Danielle Molle's educational journey began in public schools in Bulgaria before she attended public universities in the US. She has worked as an education researcher for 15 years with an emphasis on the needs of multilingual students. For the past five years, she has worked as a research partner to districts across the country that are changing their systems to advance equity in schools. Molle says there hasn't been someone on the School Board with a background in language development; and in a district where a quarter of the students are bilingual, the School Board needs to understand their experience. She is concerned about the adoption of new math and literacy curriculums and how they would address opportunity gaps. She also discusses her perspective on restorative justice practices and ballot referenda. Daniella Molle is an education researcher at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She has two children in the Madison schools, one at Hamilton Middle School and one at West High School. She volunteers weekly in a math classroom at Cherokee High School, and is a parent representative on the district’s Advanced Learning Advisory Committee. School Board Seat 6 Candidate: Blair Mosner Feltham Blair Mosner Feltham has been a teacher since 2010 and says you can't produce curriculum unless you've been in the classroom. She wants to keep her seat on the School Board so she can see her vision of a stable future for the district in practice. She is the first Board member to run for reelection to Seat 6 in more than 10 years. Mosner Feltham says the district needs collaboration with political leadership to address opportunity gaps. The school district provides transportation and food banks, but she wants to think bigger about how affordable housing and healthcare are other barriers that affect students' opportunities. Recently, she worked with the School Board to pass a resolution to advance safe firearm storage. She also discusses student cell phone use and state funding formulas. Blair Mosner Feltham is a classroom teacher, a mom to two MMSD students, and has been serving on the MMSD Board of Education since 2023. She is the only serving Board member and the only candidate who is a public school teacher. Over the last 15 years, she has taught in public schools in 4 districts and two states, including for 7 years in MMSD, mostly at West High School, where she also served as a union rep for many years. This is also not a Second Amendment issue. He wasn't walking down the street, minding his business, and accidentally flashing a concealed carry gun. He was in direct physical conflict with law enforcement while armed. According to reporting, he had allegedly been “on duty” the week before, tracking ICE, and had been taken to the ground by agents, injuring his ribs. This time, when he went back “on duty,” he brought a gun. I understand why people instinctively hesitate to side with federal law enforcement. I really do. But if we're being honest, this situation demands a clear-eyed assessment—not emotional reflexes or ideological posturing. If the political alignment were reversed—if this were someone at a protest you agreed with—would you still argue the outcome was justified? In this case, my answer is still yes, the individual was at fault, regardless of ideology. As gun owners, we talk constantly about personal responsibility. That responsibility includes knowing what situations you do not escalate, especially when armed. A fight you cannot win is a fight against law enforcement officers when you are carrying a firearm. The moment you insert yourself into a physical confrontation with LEOs while armed, you are the one escalating the situation. Everyone knows this. This is not new. As far as the US Citizens that interact with ICE, yes they are 99% detained and released upon verification of status. The 1% that are arrested/hurt are the people who escalate the Interaction instead of cooperating, like Jeremy said. En Ouganda, un nouveau type de catch local gagne en popularité ces dernières années, devenant même une sensation virale sur internet. Le catch ou lutte, non pas dans une salle, sur des mousses de protection ou une toile, mais dans un ring de terre et de boue. Une discipline et un sport développés au niveau local, le « soft ground wrestling » (« lutte sur sol mou »). Reportage dans le centre d'entraînement à Mukono, à une vingtaine de kilomètres à l'est de Kampala. De notre envoyée spéciale à Mukono, Quelques centaines de spectateurs sont autour d'un ring de boue installé au milieu d'un champ. La présentatrice annonce les premiers combattants. Parmi eux, George Wamala, 23 ans. Son nom de scène : « Bullet » (« balle » en anglais). « On s'entraîne tout le temps : des pompes, des squats, pour avoir la force de soulever nos adversaires. On s'entraîne aussi pour la sécurité, pour apprendre comment rouler ou comment exécuter les mouvements sans blesser l'adversaire », confie « Bullet ». Prises aériennes depuis la corde ou le coin du ring, sauts périlleux, projections, etc. Sous les cris du public, en quelques instants, les catcheurs sont recouverts de la terre abondamment arrosée avant le début du match. « Être dans la boue, ça nous donne encore plus d'énergie. C'est incroyable de commencer en étant tout propre sur soi et de finir par ne faire qu'un avec cette boue. Cela montre qu'on a apprécié à la fois le match, mais aussi notre terre », explique Justin Omadi, le « Géant de l'Est », est l'un des principaux combattants du centre d'entraînement. Le « soft ground wrestling » est un sport, mais aussi un spectacle de plus en plus populaire en Ouganda et ailleurs, avec plusieurs centaines de milliers d'abonnés sur les réseaux sociaux et plusieurs millions de vues cumulées. Un engouement partagé par les combattants. « On vient de cette terre (boue), et on s'entraîne sur cette terre. C'est pour ça que j'adore ce sport, et c'est aussi en même temps une promotion de notre pays. Il y a une réponse positive qui nous donne de la force, parce qu'à chaque fois que je rentre dans le ring, j'entends le public crier. Et ça nous rappelle que cette boue n'est pas juste dédiée à la culture, mais qu'il y a tellement d'autres choses qu'on peut développer grâce à cette terre », estime le « Géant de l'Est ». Un catch ougandais porté par le fondateur et directeur du centre d'entraînement, Daniel Bumba, ancien traducteur en luganda des championnats de catchs américains. « Nous croyons que le catch va conquérir l'Ouganda dans les prochaines années. Les Ougandais adorent ça parce qu'avant tout, c'est très divertissant, et ça ne trahit pas leur culture et leurs valeurs. Nous utilisons simplement ce que nous avons ici, et ils croient en nous pour devenir les principaux catcheurs de toute l'Afrique. Et nous conserverons notre boue, car c'est notre identité », affirme-t-il.
