The three authors, an accomplished business leader, a business school professor and renowned Competition lawyer and author of the bestseller Say Please and Thank You & Stand in Line, share how their research shows Canadian businesses are falling behind and why bold leadership is necessary to reverse the decline. They explain how leaders in all fields must embrace the power of technology, pursue competition on an international stage, recognize built-in monopolistic advantages may not last as long as they think, and above all take risks to energize their careers and companies. The conversation, hosted at the University of Toronto's Rotman School of Management, is an important listen for anyone who wants to build a great career -- or a great company. I saved this episode for the holidays, as it is an excellent time for reflection. If you do listen and feel the way I do about Dany's message, please share it with others. The best way to lift and unite Canada is through our collective spirits. First and foremost, we are not East or West, left or right, gay or straight, Liberal or Conservative. We are Canadian. Together we can make this the greatest country on Earth for generations to come. So what is this episode all about? Imagine, for a moment, that this scenario happened to you. You are Muslim, a proud Canadian, and part of a family that has lived in and contributed to its community and country for generations. Like many other kids, you dream of playing hockey in the NHL. 9/11 happened, and overnight a sign appeared on your neighbour's lawn. OSAMA BIN LADEN LIVES CLOSER THAN YOU THINK. The sign points to your house. That moment puts my guest, Dany Assaf, on a lifetime quest to unite Canadians and remind us of who we are and why and what truly matters. Today, Dany is respected globally as one of the world's top competition lawyers, with Torys LLP, a former adjunct professor at Western University and an author. Dany has just released a remarkable book titled: Say Please and Thank You & Stand in Line: One man's story of what makes Canada special and how to keep it that way. This is Dany's inspiring and moving story and message, which will warm your hearts over the holidays. I invite Alan Depencier, CMO of RBC, who I have come to know over the past two years. Alan joins the show to talk about the episode, and I ask him about the role organizations like RBC can play in supporting all Canadians and their dreams during these challenging times. Alan speaks from the heart versus marketing speak. To purchase Dany's book:  https://www.amazon.ca/Say-Please-Thank-Stand-Line/dp/1989555373

#025 Should we make our kids apologise or say please, thank you, excuse me?

Parenting With Pam

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 9, 2022 37:27

In this week's episode I talk about whether we should make our children say sorry, please, thank you or excuse me. We want our kids to grow up to be polite, considerate and respectful to others We are brought up in a society that expects children to be well behaved, that judges parents (or parents feel judged) if their kids aren't polite. Children learn from what we do. So if we are polite, thank people when we mean it, apologise when we're wrong, they will learn to do it too. This episode is about so more than teaching good manners. It is about understanding our children's true nature, what motivates their behaviour and trusting ourselves to trust our children. Thanks for joining me. If you're ready to get your kids listening so you don't have to shout, and instead you can start enjoying being a parent, then get signed up to my next virtual Peaceful Parenting Masterclass. Welcome to the MWSA Podcast for Thursday, June 17th. We begin with the continuing conversation on racism in Alberta. We hear the personal experience of Author and Lawyer, Dany Assaf. Dany explains the motivation behind his book “Say Please & Thank You & Stand In Line: One man's story of what makes Canada so special – and how to keep it that way.” Earlier this week we got more details about what Stampede 2021 will look like, but what about Stampede events that normally happen around town off of Stampede Park? We catch up with Global News Reporter Sarah Offin. We know that this year's Stampede won't include the Chuckwagons, but the wagons are still going to ‘roar' in 2021. We get details on the competition that'll take place next month in High River from the Vice President of the High River Agricultural Society. Looking to keep the kids busy this summer?  We get suggestions on Summer Camp options available in the city from Ellen Percival, Editor of “Calgary's Child” magazine. In this lesson, I will introduce how to say "Please don't do something" in Japanese. In order to ask someone not to do something, you need to use a negative plain form together with でください. ここ で たべない でください。 Please do not eat here. ここ で はしらない でください。 Please do not run here. おおきなこえ で はなさない でください。 Please do not speak loudly. きょう は おさけ を のまない でください。 Please do not drink alcohol today. Please refrain from using the expression using a te-form together with はいけません, which means "You must not do something" unless you are in a position of authority or the action is prohibited by regulation. It is strong expression. Twitter: https://twitter.com/yuyaman1986

Say “Please and thank you.” It’s one of the first lessons we learn as children. Usually eager to please, we do as we’re told. Then the surly teen years hit and all bets are off. Most of us do come back to some semblance of civility. (Granted, some more than others.) As we grow into adulthood the amount of appreciation we express, and our ability to sincerely say “Thank you” has a dramatic impact on how we relate to others.

Hi Mosen at Largers. We've made the big time at last and are now on Spotify, so welcome if you're listening to us there. Speaking of which, Spotify has introduced a new daily playlist to help you discover new podcast content.   During the week, Bonnie and I were refused an Uber ride because of her Seeing Eye dog. I recount the experience and how Uber handled it, and seek your own experiences like this. Do you think it's better for blind people to disclose when they are travelling with a guide dog, or should we simply expect any driver to follow the law?   Aira has released an update taking advantage of dual and triple cameras in newer iPhones.   More listeners chime in on grammatical and linguistic pet peeves.   Apple is apparently rethinking the way it tests iOS builds for quality following multiple serious bugs with iOS 13. It's not before time, but will it really make any difference?   A listener asks for help selecting text with VoiceOver in iOS.   There's a bit of enthusiasm for a book I recommended on The Mosen Explosion last week, "Get Back, Imagine, Saving John Lennon" by Donovan Day.   Are you still watching See on Apple TV Plus. A listener suggests it's worth persevering with.   More thoughts on using an iPhone or iPad as your notetaker versus using a dedicated blindness-specific product.   Bonnie is here once again with her bulletin.   Do you ever say "please" to your virtual assistant, such as Siri of soup drinker? We have some interesting data on who does and does not.   If the big juicy batteries of the new iPhone aren't enough for you, Apple has released battery cases for its latest iPhone range with an interesting user interface enhancement.   Google has just announced a cool new parenting feature called My Storytime.   And there is every indication that those two new Abba songs we were promised last year could be about to turn into a full new Abba album! Dude!

We also look at what happens when “The Berenstain Bears Say ‘Please’ and ‘Thank You!'” https://ia801501.us.archive.org/32/items/dibcep209/DIBC-EP209.mp3

I know that this is one of those topics where most people will think "why does this matter," or "is Scott losing his mind? I learned this in the first grade." Just hear me out and see why I think that saying please and thank you is more important when you're an adult than it ever was as a kid. - Scott McSimpleThings --- I am not a doctor, so do not treat this as therapy or medical advice. As a child goes from a baby to a toddler, they begin to understand rules. Words like "NO" come into play. When they are toddlers, it's a great idea to establish family rules that everyone needs to follow. It begin to teach them boundaries. We created a family rule rule chart and I'll put a link to it in the show notes so people can download it as an example. Ours were: 1. Listen to each other 2. Say Please & Thank you 3. Use nice words 4. Always tell the truth 5. Love each other 6. No whining 7. Help around the house 8. Eat good stuff before bad 9. Exercise & Play 10. Be happy You might choose to get very specific: for example: take your shoes off before coming into the house or no food is allowed outside the kitchen. It has to work for your family. Here are some general tips for making it work: Include everyone in the creation - Have a family meeting and discuss what the plan is. Explain the purpose of it and why it's important. Ask your child or children what rules they think should be on the list. They will be more inclined to want to follow them if they create it. Write down any decent suggestion. Keep them simple - If you have young kids, they need to be able to understand it Narrow down the list - After you have received input from everyone, begin to discuss what are the most important rules. Try to keep it somewhat limited. 10 rules is a good number but you can use whatever works for your family. Explain that the rules apply to the family, wherever we are and within our house if there are guests. So if a friend is over, they need to follow the rules too Try to keep it positive - Instead of saying "no yelling" maybe consider "use nice words to everyone" - Instead of saying "no hitting or kicking", you could say "keep hands and feet to ourselves" - Instead of saying "no lying", say "always tell the truth" Print it and display it - Laminating is even better. Put it in multiple places if needed Refer to the list often - If rules are being broken, refer to the list. Maybe review it on a regular basis with your child to make sure they are understanding them. Review the list regularly - make sure it is something you still want to have as a rule. Or maybe you need to focus on some other things If you are interested in the sample you can download our Family Rules chart.

Mouse whispered in Daddy Bear's ear.“Mouse says, excuse me, please,” said Daddy Bear.Little Bear ran to play on the train. Mouse whispered in Daddy Bear's ear again.“Mouse says, can she have a ride on the train, please?”Little Bear snatched the popcorn from his friends.Mouse whispered in Daddy Bear's ear once again.“Mouse says, would you like some popcorn, Bunny and Mole?”When it was time to go, Little Bear stood silently on the doorstep.“Mouse says, thank you for having me,” said Daddy Bear.Little Bear looked at Mouse. Then he looked at Daddy Bear. Then he looked at Little Bunny's mummy and said, “And thank you for having me.”“Oh, thank you for coming, Little Bear,” smiled Little Bunny's mummy.“You and Mouse can come and play any time.”“Mouse likes the way you said thank you,” said Daddy Bear.“And so do I.”

Episode 44: Lion or Lamb: Part 3 - Gentleman Doesn’t Mean Pansy The word PANSY is often used to describe a weak man - but let’s make sure not to equate that title with the title of gentleman. My grandmother always told me that a pansy was actually a tough flower. It could stand against the cold, and grow in pretty adverse conditions… it still though has a reputation for being “girly” – and the flower’s name has been embedded culturally to imply weakness or a lack of masculinity. This civility does not erase the wild, passionate strength that lies in a man’s heart. A gentleman can hold his own in a bout of fisticuffs or fencing. He can heft a child on to his shoulders, pick up his bride to carry her over the threshhold, and defend the tender things he holds dear with ferocity and strength. My thoughts on this are two-fold. 1. Just because you wear a tie to work, or drive a minivan, or eat kale – does not exempt you from the wilder side of manhood. Make sure that you know how to defend yourself and the things and people you love. Make sure you keep your physical body strong and ready to perform. 2. Inversely, just because you are a strong and brave, do not neglect the tender touches needed in civilized life. Say Please and Thank you. Snuggle with your children. Read poetry. These things do not affect your ability to be manly. In fact, I believe they enhance them. http://www.manlihood.com/lion-or-lamb-gentleman-doesnt-mean-pansy/ --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/manlihood/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/manlihood/support

PLEASE Don’t Say Please What does thawing bait in the microwave have to do with boundaries in business? This week, Jodi and Eliot discuss hard boundaries and why it’s not always kind to be polite.  Why is that important for business? Often, in an effort to be nice or polite, we make ill-kept or porous boundaries. We try to ask for things politely, when really, we want to be setting a hard boundary. Sometimes, we are prioritizing the person’s feelings over the boundary. And other times, in the want to keep the possibility open, we put off the boundary. Yet, there is a soft hostility, or soft torment, to something less than a definite answer. Allowing expectations to linger can be crueller than a hard boundary; being more definitive about expectations can be a relief. This lives at the intersection between kind and nice, and they are not always the same. It shows both empathy and compassion to let no be a complete sentence. What story do you want to tell? The response has been overwhelming. Judi lives in Lido Beach, with her husband and their 2 children in NY on a small barrier island off the coast of Long Island.
