Today we zoom in on Vancouver British Columbia to interview Dr. Todd Woodward, who is a professor in the department of psychiatry at the University of British Columbia and director of the UBC Brain Dynamics Laboratory. He's also the Director of the Cognitive Neuroscience of Schizophrenia Laboratory at BC Mental Health and Addictions Research Institute in Vancouver. Dr. Woodward received his Ph.D. in Experimental Neuropsychology at the University of Victoria in 1999, and performed his post-doc in the department of psychology at UBC. Since 2003 he's moved up from research scientist to professor - all at the University of British Columbia. He's been working at the interface of processing methods and well-crafted experimental designs to probe the networks that may be disrupted in schizophrenia and other disorders. He and his team developed almost two decades ago a unique and elegant method known as constrained principal component analysis ( or CPCA), which he has been applying successfully with many different tasks. He's also deeply interested in novel non-pharmaceutical interventions that help augment schizophrenia treatment - having developed a program called metacognitive training (MCT), which may allow those with schizophrenia to be able to step back and begin to assess their own beliefs. This was such a wide ranging conversation which delved into the nuts and bolts of CPCA as well as the potential future role that neuroimaging can play in better understanding and ultimately treating schizophrenia. We hope you enjoy this episode. Episode producers: Omer Faruk Gulban Xuqian Michelle Li

It's Tuesday 10th May, it's Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to. FORD F-150 LIGHTNINGS SEEN STOCKPILED AT DEARBORN TEST TRACK - Production of the Ford F-150 Lightning began back on April 26, but instead of all of those electric trucks ending up in the hands of buyers, it seems as though a good chunk of the EV pickups are "starting to pile up the company test track in Dearborn, MI," according to our spy photographers who are on the scene. - Numerous convoys of F-150 Lightning trucks have been seen coming from the direction of Ford's Rouge Electric Vehicle Center, and entering a side entrance at Ford's Dearborn test track. - Could the Lightning be another victim of the semiconductor shortage? Ford has not said anything about this so far, or announced any possible reasons why Lightnings would not reach owners in time, but why else would it be stockpiling them like that? - It may not necessarily be a lack of chips - it could be another supply chain-related issue that is keeping Ford from shipping these off. Original Source : https://insideevs.com/news/584672/ford-f150-lightning-stockpile-supply-constraints/ VW CEO THINKS THEY CAN SELL MORE ELECTRIC CARS THAN TESLA BY 2025 - Herbert Diess, the CEO of the Volkswagen Group, believes that the German automaker can sell more electric cars than Tesla by 2025. Is that goal even possible? - At the FT Future of the Car 2022 conference today, Diess said that VW has for goal to beat Tesla to the become the top EV automaker by 2025 – though he admitted that it will be difficult (via Reuters): - “It will be a tight race but we won't give up on it. I have to say we didn't expect our main U.S. competitor to be so fast and well-prepared.” - By 2025, Tesla will likely have a production capacity of more than four million electric cars per year. I'd be surprised if VW can jump from 400,000 to four million units in just three years. - With Tesla seemingly being willing to give up the lower-end of the market, there's an opportunity for VW to come in and deliver a lot of volume in the large market of vehicles that start under $30,000. Original Source : https://electrek.co/2022/05/09/vw-ceo-sell-more-electric-cars-than-tesla-2025/ Post | LinkedIn - Spain will be Volkswagen's second European electric vehicle hub after Germany! Therefore Volkswagen Group is investing 7 billion euro in Spain, the overall investment of 10 billion euro including 62 companies in the Spanish #PERTE program - the biggest industrial investment Spain has ever received. - For Volkswagen and SEAT,SA this means: a new Gigafactory in Sagunto close to Valencia supplied by renewable energy, and the electrification of our plants in Martorell and Pamplona. From 2025 onwards several small electric cars of Volkswagen, CUPRA and ŠKODA AUTO a.s. will be manufactured in Spain. - To be very clear: CUPRA is not replacing SEAT, but helping it to become much more profitable. - In times of limited supply of semiconductors for sure we prioritize producing the higher margin CUPRAS over some SEAT entry models. Also for electrifying we prioritize the higher margin CUPRA models or are even launching new models solely under this brand - makes economically a lot of sense. Also our dealers are benefitting from this setup. - So, as SKODA is working well beyond its own brand interest for the group, i.e. designing the new Passat, managing India, taking over platform responsibilities, ….. I am really looking forward for more group contribution from the SEAT team. Predictably coined the E-Transit Custom, Ford has released limited details and several images of the upcoming EV, which like its gas-burning counterpart isn't expected to be sold in America. - Its face is more assertive than the bug-eyed design worn by its internal-combustion stablemate. The electrified version also has chiseled lines around its wheel arches and across its flanks. Just below the passenger-side headlight is a charging port, but Ford hasn't revealed the van's battery capacity or powertrain specs. - E-Transit Custom is expected to have a driving range of around 263 miles on a single charge—we assume this is on the WLTP standard. - E-Transit Custom will start production in the second half of 2023 at its Otosan factory in Turkey. - As with the full-size Ford E-Transit that's sold in the U.S., the smaller Custom model will have Pro Power Onboard, which is a built-in AC power source that's useful at work sites or wherever electricity is needed. Show #1432 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily, you trusted source of EV information. It's Monday 11th April, it's Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to. GIVE AND TAKE: THE TAYCAN AS A BUFFER FOR THE POWER GRID - In future, when electric cars are not being driven, they could also feed energy back into the public power grid. As part of a wider pool of vehicles, they could effectively act as a power plant and help supply what is known as balancing power – electrical power that balances out fluctuations in the power grid. - A realistic pilot test conducted by Porsche, the grid operator TransnetBW and consulting firm Intelligent Energy System Services (IE2S), has demonstrated that electrical balancing power can be stored in the high-voltage batteries of an intelligent swarm of electric cars. Five series-production Taycan were connected to the power grid via the Porsche Home Energy Manager (HEM) both in a domestic environment and under laboratory conditions. Experts from Porsche Engineering had already adapted the software of these control centres beforehand for the field test. - With the expansion of renewable energies, balancing power will become even more important in the future for secure grid operation. This is because the power grid must always be stable, even though the wind and sun are not always producing consistent amounts of energy. If power grids are not stabilised at a constant 50 Hertz power frequency, there is a risk of power cuts. Until now, conventional power plants in particular have been responsible for cushioning these fluctuations. Using high-voltage batteries as a buffer would be a win-win situation: drivers of electric cars could be financially compensated for their contribution to balancing power. - During the pilot test, detailed measurements showed that the target values from the grid control system were met. This applied to both the primary (FCR: frequency containment reserve) and secondary (aFRR: automatic frequency restoration reserve) balancing power. Show #1399 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily, you trusted source of information. It's Wednesday 9th March, it's Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to. ELECTRIC CAR PRICES COULD GO UP EVEN AS FUEL PRICES SOAR - As US gas prices hit record highs in the wake of Russia's invasion of Ukraine, it seems like electric vehicles may not be a safe haven for those looking to save money. That's because Russia plays an important part in the production of the nickel that ends up in batteries used by many electric vehicles — a metal that's rocketed up in price even faster than oil. - On February 25th, nickel was trading on the London Metal Exchange for around $24,000 a ton, according to The Wall Street Journal. By March 8th, it was trading at $80,000 (down from a peak of over $100,000), and the London Metal Exchange had suspended trading. - Russia's role in producing the battery-grade nickel used in EVs is a different story — in a Twitter thread breaking down the issue, the CEO of Benchmark Mineral Intelligence says 20 percent of that supply comes from a single Russian company. - According to Bloomberg and Reuters, nickel prices were already becoming a problem for EV manufacturers even before the invasion. - But, like energy policy, battery production and integration is a big ship for automakers to turn around — if the prices of nickel and other metals stay up, it'll be a race to switch to other tech before the shockwaves of higher prices and sanctions make their way through the supply chain. At the time, the automaker said that production of customer vehicles would begin by the end of the first quarter. - Cadillac's first-ever all-electric production model is based on GM's Ultium platform. It will launch in a single-motor, rear-wheel-drive configuration packing a 100 kWh battery that enables a driving range of more than 300 miles. The battery powers an electric motor rated at 340 horsepower (254 kW) and 325 pound-feet (440 Nm) of torque. - The Lyriq's battery pack offers DC fast charging at up to 190 kW, enough to add 76 miles of range in about 10 minutes of charge. - Pricing starts at $58,795 for the 2023 Cadillac Lyriq Debut Edition Original Source : https://insideevs.com/news/572105/cadillac-lyriq-production-start-march21-report/ E-POWER: NISSAN'S UNIQUE ELECTRIFIED POWERTRAIN - e-POWER powertrain will be introduced to the Qashqai range in late summer - The new Qashqai will be the first model in Europe to be equipped with Nissan's unique e‑POWER drive system. - Nissan developed the e-Power system, specifically tuned for European consumer needs. It offers optimum fuel efficiency without compromising driving pleasure thanks to the combination of two Nissan specialisms: advanced battery and motor technology, plus the innovative variable compression ratio internal combustion engine. - As such e-Power is an ideal technology for those who cannot or do not want to take time to recharge with a cable but face a daily urban or suburban drive, and who are ready to make the first move in their transition to a full EV in the future. - The e-POWER system is comprised of a high-output battery that is complemented by a variable compression ratio 1.5-litre three-cylinder turbo-charged petrol engine generating 156hp, a power generator, inverter and 140kW electric motor - The petrol engine generates electricity, which can be transmitted via the inverter to the battery pack, the electric motor or both, according to the driving scenario. - Under deceleration and braking, the kinetic energy is recaptured and channelled back to the battery to optimise efficiency. - e-Pedal Step will brake the Qashqai at 0.2g, enough to illuminate the brake lights, and reduce the speed down to a “creeping” speed, not a complete stop. This ensures low-speed parking manoeuvres are as smooth as possible. This means that Tesla delivered 23,200 vehicles in China in February. - Of the three versions of the Model Y - Model Y, Model Y Long Range and Model Y Performance - the delivery date for the entry-level version has been reduced by two weeks from the previous 12-16 weeks to 10-14 weeks. EV BATTERIES IN 2030? - Following the announcement of a midium- to long-term strategy by Hyundai Motor and Kia to sell a total of 3.07 million electric vehicles (EV) in 2030, now all eyes are on how the country's leading carmaking group will secure the supply for production on such a large scale. - the annual demand for EV batteries is set to reach a total of 289 gigawatt-hours (GWh) by 2030. This figure is more than the annual battery production capacity of the top three domestic battery makers, LG Energy Solution (155 GWh), SK On (40 GWh) and Samsung SDI (42 GWh), combined. - Experts say that Hyundai and Kia will need to strengthen their partnerships with the three domestic battery companies and global top-tier battery makers, such as CATL in China, to secure a stable supply, and to form a local EV production cluster. - A leading example is the 10GWh battery cell plant that Hyundai Motor Group is scheduled to establish in Indonesia as a joint venture with LGES. Celebrating Women Who Live to 100 and Beyond Encore Episode As we approach the end of the summer, I wanted to revisit some of my staff's favorite podcast episodes of all time. This week we start with my favorite episode with Dr. Amy D'Prix to celebrate our 100th episode. Dr. Amy and I discuss women's longevity and two special women in my life - my maternal grandmother, Nana Mo, and my paternal great aunt, Aunt Alice. While I love being a podcast host and enjoy all my interviewing experiences, I love this one because it highlights two special women in my life that taught me at a very young age that women could change the world. Here are the original show notes and description. I hope you enjoy this encore episode as much as I enjoyed recording it. Happy Listening! kbk In this 100th podcast episode, I celebrate two women in my life who have lived to 100 years old and beyond with Dr. Amy, a life transitions expert. Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Sunday 4th July. It's Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they've built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It's a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. NORWAY MARKS 13,184 EVS SOLD DURING JUNE - In Norway, 13,184 new electric cars were registered in June. The share of electric cars in new passenger car registrations was 64.6 per cent last month. Norway's most successful model across all drive types in June was the Tesla Model 3 with 3,196 new registrations. - The first half of the year, a total of 48,059 new electric cars were put on the road, which corresponds to a market share of 57.3 per cent, according to a statement by the Norwegian Road Information Agency (OFV). In the same period last year, a total of 28,503 purely electric passenger cars were newly registered – a share of 48.1 per cent. - 81.7 per cent of all new passenger cars in Norway from January to June had an external charging connection - The stock of pure e-cars in Norway is approaching the 400,000 mark and reaches a share of 13.56 per cent. If plug-in hybrids are included, the stock of plug-in cars in Norway now stands at 544,106 and a share of more than 19 per cent. China was overtaken by Europe last year as the latter's NEV industry boomed, surging to 44 percent of the total market and beating China's 41 percent - for the full year of 2021, China's global share is estimated to remain above 45 percent - The estimate is based on the premise that China's NEV sales could reach 2.4 million units this year, which the CPCA forecast earlier. - In the segment of pure battery electric vehicles, China probably held a 57 percent global share so far this year, much higher than Europe's 27 percent and North America's 15 percent Original Source : https://www.globaltimes.cn/page/202107/1227762.shtml BMW I4 HAS TWICE AS MANY PRE-ORDERS AS IX IN THE UNITED STATES - Even though crossovers and SUVs (electric or otherwise) are going up in popularity around the world, to the detriment of traditional body styles such as the sedan or hatch, it looks like the new BMW i4 is proving more popular than the iX SUV. According to i4Talk.com, the i4 had already racked up some 2,095 reservations in the United States earlier this week, while the iX had not even reached 1,000 orders (952, according to the source). - One factor that will boost the i4's popularity has to be its lower price compared to the iX, which was designed specifically as an electric vehicle. The iX starts at $83,200 in America, but you can easily exceed $100,000, if you opt for the more powerful variant and add some options. In Europe, specifically in Germany, the iX kicks off at €77,300, but if you want the more powerful variant, that starts at just under €100,000 and once you start adding options, it quickly goes north. The main factor for many maybe that's it's rare to impossible to get ‘free' energy when you've just got batteries. Yes negative or really cheap happens if you have the right tariff, occasionally, but with solar, large chunks of a day are free on a regular basis and even on a gloomy day, you can still produce enough to cover a house ‘on standby'. Match that with 4 hours of cheap electricity overnight as standard on our tariff (5p/kWh), when our PHEV and EV can be charged if it hadn't been sunny, washing and dishwasher timed to go on, etc, and batteries become an expensive piece of ECO Bling. Add in smart home charging tech, like a Zappi, and why have an extra smaller battery put in when you have a larger one sat on the drive? And that's before vehicle-to-grid solutions. RAJEEV NARAYAN If I had to choose between storage and solar energy production, I would have to pick production, though I can see that if someone lived in an area with highly variable power pricing and the grid was fairly green, storage might be preferable. In my case, here in Texas, our grid is much more carbon intensive than it is in England, despite all our wind power, and my price per kWh does not vary with time of day. Which is why I have 17 kW of community and 8 kW of rooftop solar, which produces about 36,000 kWh a year and more than offsets the 46,000 miles of EV driving my wife and I do a year. WADE I have solar on the roof at home and at work… I have 100 % net metering and 2 electric cars… We drive totally on the power of the sun with no bill for electric… With the net metering the grid is my battery. So I am not shuffling power having only a battery. I am net Zero with the solar. I would hands down vote for the solar STEPHEN TROYER I choose solar panels, that way I can know that I'm passively adding more clean energy to the grid. And I imagine that solar AC is a big plus. More sunlight, more energy for the AC. RENE SCHNEIDER I have 15.6kW solar panels since last autumn. And I have no stationary battery. But I have two big batteries, one in the Tesla and one in the Peugeot 208. And the solarmanager, www.solarmanager.ch, a tiny, very reasonably priced computer, loading only when there is sun. Or low tariffs. I'd clearly go for solar instead of battery ALAN NORTHCUTT, WACO i believe rooftop solar and home batteries are both important. however, if one had to chose one because of cost, i would recommend rooftop solar first. this will contribute clean electricity to the grid, which is our top priority. battery storage is also useful, but in homes these are usually only used during power outages. you talk about how the UK power never goes down. this reliability also relates to country. the US has more hurricane hits than any country, and my state of Texas is in the top five of US states that are hit. so the point is: battery back up for black outs ARE useful in many parts of the world. And i disagree on one point: you stated that if you are producing more electricity during the day than you need, that excess is "wasted." not at all: that is clean electricity that goes onto the grid--great for the climate crisis. PAUL DENNEY I have solar and I use it to charge my 75kwh Tesla so if it would only let me get the Lecky back out of it I wouldn't need another battery. Come on Elon sort it out #V2G RON BARBER, SAN JOSE Without a doubt I would install solar over batteries in almost any situation. The one exception I can think of is if I lived in an area with inconsistent power Like a mountainous region where powerlines can be dropped for an extended period of time then the battery solution would accomplish not only peak rate shaving but a peace of mind. I purchased a 4.5kW solar solution in October 2012 and have now generated just over 50 MW of energy with greatly reduced energy bills. The system has no more than paid for itself. JASON HORSMAN, FRESNO Environmentally speaking, solar is the way to go. Batteries for homes can never really scale to the costs without significant improvement. Even if your solar is going back into the grid, that is clean energy your providing for your neighborhood that might not have solar (yet..). Now I do love the idea of at some point in the future all of our cars being two directional so that if there was a need in the power grid or a power outage electric cars could provide a much needed boost to the grid MARIO CABALLERO Depends on your interconnection rules. Here in New Jersey, US, we don't have time-of-use rates and we get a 1:1 net metering benefit. Battery would not make financial sense unless you are looking for backup power during outages (we rarely lose power). So it is solar panels for me. The grid is my big battery

JEROME GUILLEN LEAVES TESLA"Tesla is losing one of its most important executives; Jerome Guillen. Guillen held high-ranking positions at Tesla for more than ten years, but has now left the company, as Tesla announced in a brief notification to the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC)." says electrive.com: " Jerome Guillen was only appointed head of the new Tesla Heavy Trucking division in March, where he was to drive the market launch of the electric truck Semi, and was previously head of Tesla's entire automotive division. The Frenchman has long been considered one of Elon Musk's most important companions. He came to Tesla from Daimler in 2010 and was responsible for the Model S. In his ten years at Tesla, Musk repeatedly gave Guillen responsibility for the major construction sites in the company." https://www.electrive.com/2021/06/08/jerome-guillen-leaves-tesla/ TESLA'S CHINA-MADE VEHICLE SALES SURGE 29% IN MAY"Tesla Inc (TSLA.O) sold 33,463 China-made electric cars in May, including exports, a 29% jump from April, according to data from the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA) on Tuesday." says Reuters: "China's new electric vehicle sales surged 177% to 185,000 cars in May from a year earlier, CPCA said. Overall passenger vehicle sales, however, rose just 1.1% to 1.66 million cars. Tesla, which makes its Model 3 sedans and Model Y sport-utility vehicles in Shanghai, exported 11,527 China-made vehicles in May. In April, it sold 25,845 China-made cars, down from 35,478 in March." https://www.reuters.com/business/autos-transportation/teslas-china-made-vehicle-sales-surge-29-may-auto-association-2021-06-08/ AUSTRALIA'S LARGEST-EVER TESLA SHIPMENT"The largest-ever Australian shipment of Tesla electric cars arrived late last week in Port Kembla, NSW, according to well-informed boat tracking service VedaPrime. It's estimated the delivery comprised roughly 1500 examples of the Chinese-built Model 3 sedan, which remains the only variant from Tesla currently on offer Down Under." says caradvice.com.au: "While Tesla does not release its sales data, figures obtained by CarAdvice show the all-electric brand delivered 3430 vehicles to local customers throughout 2020. Based on those results, the most recent shipment equates to almost six-months worth of stock – more than the US-based brand has ever had to deal with in Australia" https://www.caradvice.com.au/958695/australias-largest-ever-tesla-shipment-arrives-in-port-kembla-nsw/ TESLA SEEKS TO BUILD BATTERY FACTORY NEAR BERLIN"US carmaker Tesla has expanded its application for construction permits to build more facilities in Grünheide — south of Berlin — notably a battery factory. In April, Tesla said it wanted to include a battery production facility in its permit application." according to dw.com: "Given the scope of the changes, the state of Brandenburg's ministry of agriculture, environment and climate (MLUK) must decide in the next few days "whether to involve the public again," the licensing authority said in a statement on Thursday. Following criticism from environmental groups, Tesla also wants to introduce various measures to reduce water consumption so that despite expansion of the plant, water consumption is still expected to be about 1.4 million cubic meters per year." https://www.dw.com/en/germany-tesla-seeks-to-build-battery-factory-near-berlin/a-57775358 MAXUS TO SUPPLY 750 ELECTRIC VANS TO DPD UK"DPD UK will double its fleet of electric vehicles (EVs) after ordering 750 fully electric commercial vehicles from Maxus. The parcel delivery firm has bought 500 E Deliver 9s and 250 E Deliver 3s, increasing its pure electric fleet to almost 1,500 vehicles." says CommercialFleet.org: "Maxus began taking orders for the E Deliver 3, its first compact electric van, last year. Two battery options are available: 35kWH and 52.5kWh, giving a range of up to 98 miles and 150 miles, respectively. Meanwhile, the E Deliver 9, which replaced the EV80, has a maximum range of 219 miles and can be specified with one of three battery options. Trump, is now being investigated by the Securities and Exchange Commission. In a regulatory filing, Lordstown said it will not be able to begin “commercial scale production” without raising more money from investors and lenders. Lordstown, one of about a dozen start-ups in the electric vehicle space that have gone public by merging with special purpose acquisition companies, or SPACs, added that there was “substantial doubt regarding our ability to continue as a going concern” — a legal phrase companies often use to alert investors that they might not survive" https://www.nytimes.com/2021/06/08/business/lordstown-cash-going-concern.html E.ON AIMS TO INCREASE AFFORDABILITY WITH EV SALARY SACRIFICE SCHEME"E.ON has launched an electric vehicle (EV) salary sacrifice scheme following its company car provision going all electric in 2019. This new scheme – created by E.ON and Lex Autolease - enables non-company car drivers to access an EV, offering a range of EVs as well as an option to purchase a home chargepoint through its e-mobility business unit, E.ON Drive, as an additional salary sacrifice benefit." says Current News: "The scheme allows employees to benefit from reduced Income Tax and National Insurance contributions, with this designed to make EVs more affordable. It follows Octopus announcing earlier this year it was offering 100% electric salary sacrifice schemes through a new business unit dubbed Electric Dreams." https://www.current-news.co.uk/news/e-on-aims-to-increase-affordability-with-ev-salary-sacrifice-scheme RENAULT MEGANE E-TECH ELECTRIC"The radical Mégane eVision concept is destined for series production in 2022 as the Mégane E-Tech Electric - Renault's second mainstream EV." sreports Autocar: "The production-ready car has now been revealed in camouflaged prototype guise ahead of a full public debut later this year. The model shown is the first of 30 identically liveried test cars that will be used for advanced development trials on public roads beginning this summer. Proportions are largely shared with Alliance partner Nissan's new Ariya SUV, with which the Mégane shares its CMF-EV platform and powertrain. Renault has confirmed that, like the concept, the Peugeot e-2008 rival has a 215bhp electric motor on its front axle and takes its power from a 60kWh underfloor battery pack good for 280 miles of range on the official WLTP test cycle." https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/new-cars/new-2022-renault-megane-e-tech-electric-280-mile-ev NISSAN SAYS OWNERS OF ELECTRIC VEHICLES TRAVEL 390 MILES MORE "Nissan claims electric car owners across Europe are already covering more miles annually than those driving petrol and diesel cars, despite continued concerns about range anxiety. The average electric vehicle user travels 391 miles (630 kilometres) more each year than those with cars with combustion engines, according to the Japanese car maker's research." according to thisismoney: " A poll of 7,000 motorists in the UK, France, Germany, Netherlands, Spain, Italy, Norway, Sweden and Denmark earlier this year asked car drivers to detail how many miles they cover each year - not including 2020. When drivers of petrol and diesel cars were asked what would convince them to switch to an EV, 38 per cent said the biggest 'pull-factor' would be longer ranges. Almost a third (32 per cent) said easier charging would persuade them to make the leap, while three in 10 said they would need to see an improved availability of public devices before ditching their traditional motors." https://www.thisismoney.co.uk/money/cars/article-9659615/Electric-car-owners-390-miles-year-petrol-diesel.html THE URBAN, LOW-SPEED EV IS HAVING A MOMENT"In China, a 10-foot-long minicar called the Wuling Hongguang Mini — made by General Motors and Chinese automakers SAIC and Guangxi Automobile — is topping 250,000 in total sales. That makes it the best-selling EV in the country, outperforming Tesla's Model 3 and others." says greenboz.com: "Young families are buying the car because at around $5,000 it's cheap, it's easy to drive, park and charge, and it's fun to personalize with a Crayola box of color options and stickers from the likes of Pokemon and Hello Kitty. The car is reportedly ubiquitous in the Chinese city of Liuzhou, which has chargers all over the place; the city offers free parking and charging to support the growing EV market. Along with China, European cities historically have been eager to support pint-sized vehicles for urban living. But major European automakers aren't yet embracing the ultra-cheap EVs being sold in China. Episode 30: Street Medicine BasicsThe sun rises over the San Joaquin Valley, California, today is October 2nd, 2020.I have two sneaky children who are always trying to hide during the week to play video games. Well, I read an article that gave some relief to my worried mind about the benefits of videogames. The article was published in 2007, titled “The Impact of Video Games on Training Surgeons in the 21st Century”. The study consisted in having 33 participants (residents and attendings) to answer a questionnaire, go through a training called Top Gun, and play over-the-counter video games. Then the doctors were evaluated in their performance during laparoscopic procedures. The results showed that video game play correlated with 37% fewer errors and 27% faster completion. Conclusion, video game experience skill correlates with laparoscopic surgical skills. Who would have thought that video games may be a practical teaching tool to train surgeons[1]. “Dementia is one of the greatest challenges in healthcare,” said Andrea Pfifer, CEO of AC Immune, a company developing several treatments for Alzheimer’s Disease. There is a new case of dementia every 3 seconds in the world, currently 50 million people live with dementia, and we still don’t have an effective treatment or cure. The main theory of the pathophysiology of Alzheimer’s is the accumulation of beta amyloid in the brain, but anti-beta amyloid therapies have fallen short in clinical trials, making some researchers reconsider this hypothesis[2]. Some underrated targets may include inflammation and vascular factors. But the tau protein, a key element in the formation of neurofibrillary tangles in the brain, is experiencing a starring moment. Semorinemab is the first anti-tau therapy to enter a phase 2 study. Alzhemier’s disease as a multifactorial condition, may need a combination of treatments with anti-beta amyloid and anti-tau medications, among other therapies. We will continue to hope for a cure as the research continues to evolve in the following years. I cannot do everything, but still I can do something, and because I cannot do everything I will not refuse to do something that I can do.”– Edward Everett Hale (frequently attributed to Helen Keller)You are only one, but you can do something for someone. This quote is very appropriate for our episode today, and you’ll see later why. This quote reminds me of the story of the starfish thrower[3], and I have to admit that I had an impulsive purchase a few minutes ago, because that story connected me to my youth, and I want to read it again, so I just bought the book in Amazon. The story is about a man who throws sea stars back to the sea to prevent their death. Even though there are thousands of stars, that man decides to change the destiny of one star at the time. We may be only one, and we may save only one star, but for that star you make a difference. I recommend you read that story. It’s inspiring. Talking about inspiring, I had a conversation with Dr Beare about street medicine, I hope you enjoy it.Arreaza: We have Dr. Beare with us – He’s famous around here, loved my residents and staff, thank you for your time, Dr. Beare, Chief Resident Rio Bravo Class of 2019.Beare: Thank you for the invite and kind introduction, I am Matthew Beare, Medical Director of Special Populations at CSV, development and implementation of special programs for homeless, migrant farm workers, and patients who suffer from substance use disorder. Street medicine program, branch of our homeless help, has been in place for one year. It opened in October 2019. Arreaza: Ok so you are doing street medicine, and addiction medicine, and primary care.Beare: Yes, and often there is overlap between the two.Definition of street medicineArreaza: What is street medicine?Beare: From a medical standpoint, street medicine is basic medicine; more of a philosophical approach, and I guess there’s a practical difference as well, but what we are trying to do is provide high level primary care to our homeless, chronically-unsheltered patients, to meet them where they are, as opposed to have them meet in clinic. Our philosophy of street medicine is “ go to the people,” so once a week, every Thursday, we pack up our medical supplies and a small team of us go directly into a variety of homeless encampments here in Kern County, in Bakersfield, and we provide care on site, so that can be everything from preventative care to acute treatment of different illnesses including procedures such as I&D of abscesses, joint injections, we can provide on-site prescription medications, and we can also start the process of starting lab work, sending prescription information to various pharmacies. From a medical standpoint, it’s a high level primary care, but it’s rather the philosophical approach of going to the patient versus having them come to you.Training needed for street medicineArreaza: How did you get started in Street Medicine? Any special training? Motivation? Offered a position?Beare: I got offered position of medical director and I was doing more research on homeless populations and how to better serve them. I was at a conference in Washington DC where I learned about street medicine. I learned about the philosophical approach and felt it was something missing in our community. When I started, I kept making plans like, “I need to go out, we need to start this team,” and eventually it got so bogged down in preparing to go out that we never went out, so finally in October 2019 we said, “forget it, were just going to go out, do what we think is best,” so we just went out, started seeing patients in variety of encampments, and since then we have been molding it to document it better and to make sure we are providing the highest level of care that we can. But there is no official title in it, to date. There is one fellowship in Pittsburgh, in Street Medicine, which is the first of its kind, so anyone interested in becoming an “official” Street Medicine provider can look into that fellowship. What you do in a street medicine visitArreaza: You’re doing this on Thursday mornings, can you describe to us what exactly you do?Beare: We take two vehicles, we do it at 6:30 AM because it gets so hot by mid-afternoon. We have medical backpacks with a myriad of supplies, gauzes, bandages, kits for I&D, kits for joint injections, prescription medications that we work with a special pharmacy so we can prescribe those on site, and we also bring some harm reduction materials such as clean syringes, sharps disposal containers to distribute, condoms, hygiene kits, we try to bring with us essentials such as food, water, sometimes clothing, blankets. You don’t bring food and blankets to patients in clinic, and it is a crucial need so we are trying to fill that need. We travel to our campsites, right now we are covering a couple mile stretch between N. Chester and 24th St, there’s a riverbed that flows along there. We have covered that homeless encampment site over the last 6 months. We park our trucks, and walk along the riverbed. A lot of them are wooded areas or clandestine, so you can’t really see them. And we have been fortunate enough to establish good relationships with these patients so they actually allow us into their campsites and sometimes directly into their tents, it’s pretty rewarding in that regard. A street medicine teamArreaza: What support staff do you have? A nurse?Beare: Street medicine teams across the US are all different, there are about over 180 teams acting across the world right now, and they can all vary in how they are composed. Our team is myself as the medical provider, I have my Medical Assistant who keeps track of everything we are doing, the medications we are giving, and takes notes. We have two outreach workers with us who help the patients talk to housing authority, or if they need to get their driver’s license or social security card, they coordinate all those social aspects, and we have our homeless liaison, who maybe the most important person on the team, who has an extended experience in homelessness or substance abuse who acts as our go-between, who can communicate effectively and teach us the culture of the encampment so we don’t overstep our bounds, and then we have with us often residents and students who come along for education.Street medicine fundingArreaza: How does this get funded?Beare: California right now has very strange laws on where you can and cannot see patients, so it’s difficult to bill for visits that are outside of the four walls of a clinic, and we are actively working to change that legislation; we are working with CPCA and DHCS to get that changed, but now, our ability to bill, which is how we have any revenue for this, comes from our mobile unit, the giant RV that we go and take with us. We have very little interaction in the mobile unit itself; it’s there in case we need something, but really its parked there in case we need to use it, or for billing purposes.Patients seen in street medicine roundsArreaza: Who can be seen by you? Can anyone be seen by you or it must be a specific population?Beare: When I am on the street there is no consideration given for your legal status, or your insurance status, if you are someone who is unsheltered and you need help, it is our duty to provide that care. Anyone can be seen when we are doing these street medicine rounds. We see the same patients over and over since we are in the same area, but given the transient nature of these patients we often see new patients and, again, whether they are insured, whether they have legal status as a citizen, it means nothing to us, it is the same level of treatment. Arreaza: And you provide vaccines?Beare: Yes, we do. Every year we are fortunate enough that the Department of Public Health gives us a certain number of influenza vaccines that we can give out. Last year we gave out about 100. If someone needs a specific vaccine outside of their annual flu vaccine, we can bring that out with us in an appropriately cooled container and administer it. And it’s not just vaccines, we give on site injections of Ceftriaxone, we give other on site treatment plans as well, preventative vaccinations and preventative care.Documentation of street medicine encountersArreaza: And documentation, is it just like a normal visit?Beare: Yes, it is like a normal clinic visit, and we do that intentionally as we are submitting these for billing, so we try to follow the same standards as with any other patient. We are currently undertaking some research in this community, so some of the documentation is written in a way for us to pull information from those charts, otherwise the documentation is just like any other patient, and if you read the medical record, you might not know this is a street medicine patient, unless you read “this is a street medicine patient.”A word of advice: Just do itArreaza: That’s great Dr. Beare so if there is someone listening to this episode and considering being a street medicine doctor, what are some suggestions or advice you can give to them?Beare: One of the biggest hiccups I saw when I first started, there was so much time spent in preparing, because it is such a unique way to treat the patients there is a tendency to want to do it perfectly. I could have done research for months or years on how to build the perfect street medicine team, but the only reason the team exists now is because we just went out and did it. I think that’s what it takes because if this is something you are considering implementing into your practice or career, just do it, start it, and make it perfect later, start it first. No one is reinventing the wheel here, there is a street medicine institute, so if anyone needs guidance on how this works, they can reach out or to me directly, I am happy to discuss Street Medicine with anyone who is interested (email: Matthew.Beare@clinicasierravista.org, work phone: 661-328-4283).Safety in street medicineArreaza: Have you ever felt that your safety is in jeopardy when you go out and do street medicine?Beare: I’m glad you brought that up. That is probably the number one concern. When you talk to people who have never experienced or seen street medicine, always the first question is “was it safe, was it dangerous?” Let me just start out, again, with the near 200 street medicine teams, to date, there has not been one reported incident of violence against a street medicine provider, I don’t think the same can be said even about clinic visits, and you’re talking about 200 street medicine teams across the world, not just in California, not just in the US, spanning across every continent, except Antarctica, there are street medicine teams and still there has not been one reported case of violence against a street medicine provider. No, I have never felt like my safety was in jeopardy nor was the safety of my team in jeopardy certainly not by any of our patients. However, you are providing medicine in the elements, and the elements can be brutal especially in an environment like this, so you have to be careful to not get dehydrated, you have to wear sunscreen and stuff like that. And we have had some issues with dogs, but you know we haven’t had, no one’s ever been bit, in my street medicine team. So, if you were at all concerned with safety, it’d be the dogs in the area.PPE in street medicineArreaza: In these times of pandemic what PPE do you use? Gloves? Masks?Beare: When we travel we constantly use our surgical mask, and if we are going to any type of COVID testing, we don the full PPE with the gown, the gloves, the N95 with the face shield, the same precautions we use in clinic, nothing too out of the ordinary. For whatever reason, COVID-19 hasn’t affected our homeless population anywhere near what we thought, it’s affected them significantly less than the general population, and there’s some hypothesis as to why that is, and in our experience, in my anecdotal experience, COVID is less common in our patients.Patient-provider relationshipsArreaza: Any anecdotes you would like to share, anything you saw, any crazy procedures?Beare: Crazy is sort of the norm when we go out. We see a lot of stuff that is surreal sometimes. I think if I wanted to share something about the patients we see or any particular patient, it’s the warmth of which our service is received. The relationships we have built are so profound, we are talking about a population that feels like the whole system has turned their back on them, from healthcare to friends, family, and the community at large has turned their backs on them, and so to get to be that ambassador of the people who genuinely care for you and you deserve the same level of care as anyone in our community, that garners an incredibly rewarding relationship. From a medical perspective, we have been able to treat so many people for chronic illness that they haven’t been treated for years. Dr. Franco, our infectious disease specialist, probably has a huge uptick in treatment for Hepatitis C cases because we have connected these patients to healthcare for the first time in years. We have been able to avoid utilization of emergency rooms because we are managing so many acute infections in the field that these patients don’t need to go to the ER every time they get an abscess. It’s been incredibly a rewarding thing in ways that’s difficult to put in words. Now that I’ve done it for a year, I don’t think I could ever go back to not doing this. I don’t think I know anyone in the field who could not do street medicine once they have been exposed.Arreaza: I feel very fortunate to have you here on our podcast today. You are giving us very valuable information, and the residents are going to appreciate this episode. Thank you because the labor you are doing is a labor of love. You have the knowledge and skills, and you are putting it into practice to help the most vulnerable members of our society.Beare: Well I appreciate you giving me a platform to speak on as well. Arreaza: Dr. Beare thank you for being with us, any last words for our residents or faculty or listeners around the world? Beare: If you have any interest, if this strikes a chord with you, please contact me. I will go out of my way to connect you with the right people. If you need anything regarding street medicine, I am always available.__________________________Speaking Medical: Mittelschmerzby Amy Arreaza, FNP-BC (recorded by Graciela Peña, LVN)We would like to present the winner of our prize for this week. Her name is Amy Arreaza, a family nurse practitioner in Clinica Sierra Vista, who also happens to be Dr Arreaza’s wife (the decision of the winner was unbiased and unanimous). Congratulations, Amy, enjoy your gift card. Now, let’s listen to your definition of mittelschmerz, as read by Gracie Pena.As a woman who has experienced mittelschmerz, I can tell you that ovulation pain is no joke! In fact, severe mittelschmerz can be mistaken for appendicitis and can be included on your list of differentials for a patient presenting with Right lower quadrant or pelvic pain. In most cases, however, mittelschmerz is just an annoying or irritating pain that some women have to put up with mid cycle (hence the name mittelschmerz, German for middle pain). Mittelschmerz is a pain more bothersome than any “pain in the neck” or “pain in the rear” that I have ever experienced. So instead of using those colloquial phrases to show my irritation, next time my husband is getting on my nerves perhaps I'll tell him “You're a big mittelschmerz!” ____________________________Espanish Por Favor: Abscesoby Lillian Petersen, RNHave you heard that you can add an “o” at the end of any English word and turn it into a Spanish word? You can do just that with the Spanish word of this week. Can you guess what the word absceso means? Yes, absceso means abscess. An absceso is a collection of pus that can be located anywhere in the body. An absceso can form anywhere bacteria, fungus and other microorganisms can grow. Commonly, abscesos need an incision and drainage (I&D) if they are external, for example on the skin; and some may need needle aspiration or even surgery in the OR if they are internal. By draining it, some abscesos may get cured, but some may need antimicrobial medication for associated cellulitis, and large abscesos may need regular changes in packing to get cured. Now, you can add this word to your growing Spanish vocabulary, absceso. See you next week! ____________________________For your Sanity: Jokesby Tammy Hilvers, MDWhy did the driver hold his nose? He shared his motivation, inspiration, and modus operandi. If you would like to expand on this topic, you may send us an email or contact him directly at Matthew.Beare@clinicasierravista.org. Mittelschmerz means “pain in the middle”. It’s a pain experienced by some women during ovulation around mid-cycle. Congrats to Amy for her creative definition and for her . Our nurses had a special participation today, Gracie recorded the definition of mittelschmerz, and Lilli taught the word absceso, which is Spanish for abscess. What a great team we have! Welcome to new PRODUCER GRANTON SMITH Welcome to new PRODUCER KEITH A KLIPSTEIN POLESTAR 2 "What we have in effect here is a slightly high-riding, five-door, all-electric hatchback that plays the role both of mass-market leader and rival disruptor to the Tesla Model 3. The Polestar 2 will initially be launched in a single model, that’s available with or without an optional £5000 Performance Pack. Prices starts at £49,990 not including the £3000 government grant, and comes with a very long standard equipment list including a full active safety suite, a glass roof, heated and electric seats front and back, a premium sound system, active LED lights all around, 19-inch alloys , the Polestar 2 will be launched with a 400bhp electric powertrain, all-wheel drive and single high-standard specification in order to rival mid-level Model 3s." says evo.co.uk: "The model we’re driving today includes the Performance Pack, which brings high-end Öhlins dampers and a chunky Brembo brake package to the party, amongst other equipment upgrades, but the question of what the Polestar 2 actually is here is less relevant than the big one facing it. Consider this Volvo interior 2.0 – excellent build quality, materials are mostly excellent and the new Android-based tech is top-notch." https://www.evo.co.uk/polestar/202863/polestar-2-performance-pack-review-verdict-specs-and-prices TESLA BEGINS MODEL Y HEAT PUMP NOISE CANCELLATION RETROFITS "Tesla has started retrofitting an acoustic blanket over the Model Y’s heat pump to reduce the amount of noise it produces. Covering the Model Y heat pump was a suggestion made by Sandy Munro during his teardown of the Tesla SUV crossover. According to TSLA supporter @hwfeinstein, a Tesla Mobile Service ranger came to his house to retrofit his new Model Y with an acoustic blanket." reports Tesmanian: "it seems that Tesla has started retrofitting Model Y heat pumps with acoustic blankets if requested by owners. In a follow-up comment, the Model Y owner referenced someone whose Tesla crossover was already equipped with an acoustic blanket. So it appears that acoustic blankets now come standard with newer Model Y units. So people who received one of the Model Y vehicles from the Fremont Factory’s first batch may need to request an acoustic blanket retrofit " TESLA HIRES GUY BEHIND APPLE PAY TO LEAD SUPERCHARGER EXPERIENCE. WHAT YOU WANT TO IMPROVE? "Tesla has hired the product manager behind Apple Pay to lead the Supercharger experience. Yesterday, Michael Rihani announced on LinkedIn that he left his position as senior product manager for Apple Card and Apple Cash at the Cupertino, California, company to join Tesla as the new product manager for “Supercharger User Experience and Strategy.”" writes electrek: "With strong increases in sales in many markets, Tesla owners are experiencing some long wait times at Supercharger stations in places like Los Angeles and the Bay Area." https://electrek.co/2020/07/08/tesla-hires-guy-apple-pay-lead-supercharger-experience/ JAGUAR EV-TYPE: TRADEMARK FILING HINTS AT ELECTRIC F-TYPE SUCCESSOR "Jaguar has registered to trademark the name Jaguar EV-Type, further fuelling speculation that the brand’s next sports car will be electric. The trademark, which is still pending according to the WIPO global brand database, was first applied for in mid-February." reports Autocar: "The name EV-Type appears to be a reference to the iconic Jaguar E-Type sports car of the 1960s and 1970s. This, along with the fact that the only Jaguar model still using the ‘Type’ suffix is the F-Type, adds considerable weight to the assumption. One stumbling block would be the need to spend big on developing a bespoke platform for an electric sports car, although this issue could be helped if Jaguar Land Rover extends its budding collaboration with BMW." https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/new-cars/jaguar-ev-type-trademark-filing-hints-electric-f-type-successor LOTUS PLANS TO OBLITERATE THE BUGATTI CHIRON "The Lotus Evija, the 2,000-horsepower electric flagship that will pioneer the next-generation of sports cars from the automaker, is not targeting low-speed acceleration. Lotus wants its car to beat the supercars where they thrive—closing in on 200 mph as fast as possible." says Jalopnik: "Gavin Kershaw, test driver for Lotus, spoke to Top Gear about the work going into the electric Evija supercar, and the sort of performance benchmarks it’s being compared to. Apparently, Lotus is really concerned with destroying Bugatti’s 0-186 mph acceleration in just 12.4 seconds and they claim they can shave the time all the way down to just 9 seconds." He said: "“I’ve driven some of the Formula One cars - even the T125 with 1,000 horsepower-per-tonne - and they’re quite brutal. This has got such strength and growth – it’s a bit like going up the runway where you’re pushed back in your seat and held there. It’s a diesel PHEV with a maximum claimed electric range of 99 km (61 miles) thanks to a 31.2 kWh battery pack. According to the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA), U.S. electric vehicle maker Tesla Inc sold 14,954 Shanghai-made Model 3 vehicles in China in June, up 35% month-on-month. CPCA data showed that Tesla sold 11,095 vehicles in May, up from around 3,635 units in April. CPCA uses a different counting method than Tesla’s deliveries. Learn more about your ad choices. Show #804 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Tuesday 9th June 2020. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and hel p you learn about EVs along the way too. Welcome to a new EXECUTIVE PRODUCER via Patreon RICHARD LUPINSKY 'ONE MILLION MILE' ELECTRIC CAR BATTERY IS NOW 'READY TO PRODUCE' "The leadership of a Tesla technology partner in China that is helping to develop a "one million mile" battery says the company is now "ready to produce." Zeng Yuqun, chairman of Contemporary Amperex Technology Co Ltd (CATL), has said the Ningde-based manufacturing firm has the capability of making a battery pack that can last for about 16 years, powering an electric vehicle for 1.24 million miles." writes Newsweek: "According to the SCMP, CATL signed a two-year contract to supply batteries to Tesla in February this year, and its technology is set to be incorporated into the Model 3 range of vehicles being made at Musk's new gigafactory located in Shanghai." On Elon: "We're getting along well and he's a fun guy. He's talking about cost all day long, and I'm making sure we have the solutions." https://www.newsweek.com/tesla-elon-musk-one-million-mile-battery-ready-produce-chinese-partner-catl-says-1509293 FORD REVEALS ESCAPE PHEV PRICE, RANGE AND MORE FOR U.S. "Ford announced its first new plug-in hybrid model in the U.S. market, the Ford Escape PHEV, which earlier was launched in Europe as Ford Kuga PHEV. The Escape PHEV might be one of the top-selling plug-in hybrids and a major competitor to the Toyota RAV4 Prime. It will start at less than $35,000 (MSRP), before destination charge and an eligible federal tax credit of probably over $6,700." says InsideEVs: " The EPA-estimated all-electric range will be about 37 miles (59.5 km) so really not bad, although the RAV4 Prime is able to go up to 42 miles (67.6 km). The battery pack (14.4 kWh) is installed under the second-row seats." Hau Thai-Tang, Ford chief product development and purchasing officer said: “The original Ford Escape was the world’s first hybrid SUV and the all-new Ford Escape plug-in hybrid represents how far we’ve come in technology and efficiency. The all-new Escape plug-in has more power and more passenger space than the Fusion Energi plug-in, as well as four times the cargo volume behind its second-row seats. Escape also has an additional 11 miles of all-electric driving range before it uses a drop of gas.” https://insideevs.com/news/427357/ford-escape-phev-price-range-us/ VOLKSWAGEN REPLACES DIESS WITH RALF BRANDSTÄTTER FOR THE VW BRAND "Ralf Brandstätter is the Volkswagen brand's new CEO as a promotion over his previous role as the marque's chief operating officer. He takes over the role from Herbert Diess who is currently the CEO of both the VW brand and VW Group as a whole. " reports Motor1.com: "The company's board positions this change as letting Diess put a greater emphasis on running the business, rather than splitting his focus between two roles. The shakeup comes amid VW having some problems in Europe. The company had to halt deliveries of the new Golf because of an issue with the software for the emergency call function – a mandated feature in Europe. The problem affected around 15,000 cars that the automaker had already delivered to customers. There are also rumors about problems with the software suite in the company's forthcoming ID.3 electric car. The exact nature of the issue isn't clear, but elements within the system are allegedly not able to communicate correctly. There are reportedly over 10,000 technicians working to solve the problem." Spiegel.de reports (Google Translate from German): "There is also a problem with the electric ID.3, with which VW wants to build a Golf successor in the mass market and establish an E series with billions of dollars in investment. The model from the Zwickau plant, which is to be ordered from mid-June, will initially only come with a slimmed-down range of functions. Reason: software delays." https://www.motor1.com/news/427604/volkswagen-new-boss/?utm_source=RSS&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=RSS-all-news https://www.spiegel.de/wirtschaft/unternehmen/vw-konzernchef-diess-gibt-fuehrung-der-kernmarke-ab-a-5a78ea2b-a531-4f94-b995-dae144216e5a CHINA'S BYD IN TALKS TO SUPPLY JLR FROM UK BATERY PLANT "Chinese EV and battery specialist BYD is in talks with Jaguar Land Rover to supply automotive batteries from a UK plant, a source with knowledge of the situation said." writes Automotive News Europe: "JLR CEO Ralf Speth has previously said the UK needs its own battery cell production, but operated independently of JLR. The UK would be BYD’s first European battery cell factory but the company is also looking at other European locations, the source said. JLR currently sells the Jaguar I-Pace electric crossover, which is built by Magna Steyr in Austria. It plans to produce a full-electric version of the Jaguar XJ sedan at its Castle Bromwich factory in England." https://europe.autonews.com/automakers/chinas-byd-talks-supply-jlr-uk-battery-plant WIRELESS CHARGING UPDATE "Wireless parking places, if they work well with a variety of vehicles, are primed to be part of the gold rush. WiTricity's charging coils, which China chose for its national wireless standard in May, can reach parked electric sports cars and SUVs alike with clearance ranging from 4 in.–10 in." says CNBC: "Charging vehicles in motion is on the table with existing technology too, since the distance between a car's carriage and the road stays fairly constant. Fellow wireless charging company Qualcomm Halo, which WiTricity acquired last year, has built a 300-ft test track in France that can charge cars driving at highway speeds. And Israeli start-up Electreon is electrifying short stretches of road in Israel and Sweden. If automakers can settle on one standard technology, omnipresent, automatic charging stations would let electric vehicles go farther on smaller batteries, reminiscent of Tesla's imagined fuel-free planes. Hands-free charging also will grow more essential if cars get more autonomous, since they won't be able to plug themselves in." https://www.cnbc.com/2020/06/08/researchers-work-on-the-next-generation-of-wireless-charging-for-evs.html ALL-NEW FIAT 500 ELECTRIC NOW AVAILABLE TO ORDER The New Fiat 500 ‘la Prima’ hatchback makes its debut today following the successful unveiling of the New 500 ‘la Prima’ convertible in March. The New 500 ‘la Prima’ hatchback – including the fitment of the easyWallbox – is priced at £26,995, including PiCG. The lithium-ion batteries, with a capacity of 42kWh, give the New 500 a range of up to 199 miles in the WLTP cycle. To optimise charging time, the New 500 electric is equipped with an 85kW fast charge system. The New 500 also comes with a 11kW onboard AC charger. Sherpa mode optimises the available resources to reduce fuel consumption to a minimum - maximum speed is limited to 50mph; accelerator response is managed in order to reduce energy consumption; and deactivation of both the climate control system and heated seats. The electric motor has an output of 87kW, providing a maximum speed of 93mph (self-limited) and acceleration from zero to 62mph in 9 seconds and zero to 31mph in 3.1 seconds. The New 500 electric is the first FCA car to be equipped with the new UConnect 5 infotainment system, the connected platform designed for the future. Developed with the idea of providing customers with a completely new user experience, UConnect 5 is compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto operating systems and can be used in wireless mode. My Remote: checks the battery charge level from a smartphone; schedule vehicle charging during the most convenient time periods; know the exact location of the car; lock and unlock the doors and set the climate control system. MERCEDES GLA 250 E 2020 REVIEW Mercedes-Benz CLA 250 e Coupé, CLA 250 e Shooting Brake and B 250 e plug-in hybrids are available to order now. . The GLA with plug-in hybrid drive system will follow a few weeks later "The new GLA 250 e is plug-in hybrid motoring at its best, and for many prospective buyers this could be the GLA to go for. Impressive all-electric running combines with surprisingly sporty yet economical hybrid drive when the petrol engine is brought into play." is how AutoExpress reviewed it: "Joining electrified versions of the latest CLA and CLA Shooting Brake in British Mercedes showrooms is the new GLA 250 e, which shapes up as a rival for plug-in hybrid versions of the latest BMW X1 and X2 and the Volvo XC40. Total system power stands at 215bhp and 450Nm, while the electric power is stored in a 15.6kWh battery. The GLA 250 e can recharge at 24kW." 38 miles on EV power, 86mph on the motor. https://www.autoexpress.co.uk/mercedes/gla/352426/new-mercedes-gla-250-e-2020-review The Mercedes B 250 e is now on sale, with first deliveries expected in late summer. It is only available with AMG Line Executive equipment grade or higher, so prices start from £35,280. CHINA’S EV MARKET IS RECOVERING "In China, exactly 55,829 battery electric cars and 14,370 plug-in hybrids from local production were sold in May. The sales figures for so-called New Energy Vehicles were thus 25.8 per cent lower than in the same month last year, but 19.5 per cent higher than in April 2020." reports Chris Randall for electrive: "The best-selling electrified model in May was the Tesla Model 3: CPCA statistics show 11,095 units of the locally manufactured American electric sedan sold in China. That is a good three times as many as in April (3,635). However, sales of the Model 3 in April were also down sharply on March (10,160). Tesla itself probably contributed to the new high with a price reduction for the Model 3 Standard Range announced at the end of April. " That price drop kept it in the window for Chinese subsidies. And what about the Long Range RWD Model 3 they started delivering at the end of May? David Leggett, Automotive Analyst at GlobalData: "This is the second consecutive monthly rise for the Chinese vehicle market, as it rebounds from sharp declines in the first quarter caused by the COVID-19 coronavirus. China was first into the COVID-19 crisis and first out of it, so developments in China’s economy are being watched very closely." https://www.electrive.com/2020/06/09/chinas-ev-market-is-recovering-sowly/ WOULD YOU SWAP TO AN ELECTRIC CAR IF THEY WERE £6,000 CHEAPER? Government could announce a scrappage scheme for only electric vehicles Motorists who scrap an old petrol or diesel car would get £6,000 off a new EV Plans could be announced next month, according to report from The Telegraph It mirrors plans in Germany that are part of a €130bn Covid-19 stimulus package EV buyers there will receive an industry and government-backed subsidy of €9k "It could mean that the price of the British-build Nissan Leaf electric vehicle falls from £26,845 to just £20,845 and would see a new VW ID.3 zero-emission hatchback cost around the same as an entry-level petrol-powered Golf. The Prime Minister would also see the move as a positive break for UK manufacturing, with the popular Nissan Leaf build at the Japanese firm's factory in Sunderland and Mini's Plant Oxford producing the all-new Mini Electric." writes This Is Money: "The price of a Nissan Leaf would drop to around £20,000, which will be on par with the Nissan Qashqai, starting from £20,565 in the UK. The all-new £24,400 Mini Electric would fall to just £18,400 - a like-for-like fee as a petrol Mini Cooper. Tesla's most affordable Model 3 would decrease from around £40,000 to £34,000, around the same a a mid-spec BMW 3 Series saloon." Read more here: https://www.thisismoney.co.uk/money/cars/article-8398385/Boris-Johnson-considering-slashing-prices-new-EVs-6-000.html Add £3000 for the PiCG and that's £9000 off the price. Fiona Howarth, chief executive at Octopus Electric Vehicles: "'Consumers who want to switch to greener driving can be put off by the more expensive initial outlay for an electric vehicle compared to petrol or diesel. But by reducing this cost, EVs will become more affordable and dramatically increase uptake. In 2019, around 100 people every day were losing their life due to poor air quality. The government can really make a difference and save lives by encouraging the switch to clean, electric cars." QUESTION OF THE WEEK How far does a plug-in hybrid need to drive on EV power only? Official Q1 2020 sales data from China has been released from the CPCA. Tesla delivered ~16,700 Model 3's in China in March, with ~10K coming just in March. This implies that Gigafactory Shanghai is at a 150K/yr Model 3 production rate TODAY. The Shanghai ramp is progressing way faster than expected. I think this is a an epic storyline that will come to light on Tesla's Q1 earnings call.
Tesla Inc sold 10,160 vehicles in China in March, its highest ever monthly sales in the world’s largest auto market, the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA) said on Thursday. CPCA secretary general said ,Tesla, which aims to produce 150,000 Model 3 sedans from its $2 billion Shanghai factory, sold around 30% of the battery electric vehicles sold in China. Tesla sold around 3,900 units in February, up from 2,620 vehicles in January, CPCA data showed. CPCA uses a different counting method than Tesla’s deliveries. The nation’s first health centers opened in 1965. Today, expansion of the federally supported health center system has grown to over 1,400 organizations, operating more than 10,000 clinic sites serving more than 29 million patients and generating $55 billion in economic activity annually. Health centers help increase access to crucial primary care by reducing barriers such as cost, lack of insurance, distance, and language for their patients. In doing so, health centers provide substantial benefits to the country and its health care system. Learn about the vital role that community health centers play in the American health care system. Hosted by: Dan Hawkins Dan Hawkins is Senior Adviser to the President and CEO at the National Association of Community Health Centers, Inc. (NACHC). From 1981 through 2018, he headed the Public Policy and Research Division of NACHC, where he provided NACHC's membership with federal and state health-related policy research, analysis, advocacy, and leadership. During his time in policy, federal support for health centers grew from $350 million in 1981 to $6 billion annually in 2018, and the number of people served by health centers has grown from 5 million to over 28 million. Prior to joining NACHC, Dan served as a VISTA volunteer, Director of a migrant and community health center located in south Texas, and as an assistant to HHS Secretary Joseph Califano during the Carter Administration. He has written numerous articles and monographs on health care issues, and has provided testimony before several Congressional Committees. Dan has lectured on health policy topics at the George Washington University and several other universities, and has been interviewed frequently by major newspapers and radio/television networks. Dr Sean Arendse from the CPCA (Cosmetic Physician's College of Australia) talks about the changes in the aesthetics industry when it comes to safety - injectable safety especially. He talks about how it's important for clinics to get back to basics and be prepared to deal with any patient side effects, complications or issues. Patients also have a responsibility to know what to look for when it comes to their practitioner and this podcast talks about how to do that.

Patient safety has been front and centre of the cosmetic medicine industry this year which is where it should be. Trish chats with Dr Molton about the state of the industry, consumer confusion when it comes to practitioner qualifications, patient safety and making informed decisions.
BRAND SECRETS AND STRATEGIES: Empowering Brands | Raising The Bar
This episode's FREE download Your brand's selling story is the cornerstone of all effective business building strategies. Learn How To Get Your Brand On The Shelf and What Retailers REALLY Want. This Is Your Roadmap To Success. CLICK HERE TO GAIN INSTANT ACCESS TO MY FREE TURNKEY SALES STORY STRATEGIES COURSE Shoppers want healthy natural organic products. Organic produce is the gateway to driving sustainable natural organic sales in center store. This is the audio recording of the presentation I facilitated for the Category Management Association. The Category Management Association reached out to me to facilitate four webinars geared toward helping mainstream retailers and brands understand what makes natural natural. Today's podcast includes the audio from the third in the series, all about produce and how produce is driving center store sales. As consumers begin to experiment with organic and they try to understand and learn a little bit more about it, it's easier for them to make the connection between produce and other products within the store. The key point here is that produce is what drives sales in center store by helping those consumers understand and appreciate the value of natural organic products on the perimeter of the store and how they relate to other categories within the store. If you'd like to download the presentation that we refer to in this webinar, you can easily access it at categorymanagementsolutions.com/cma3. As a little bit of additional background, the Category Management Association (CMA) defines the standards of category management proficiency. There are three levels; CPCA, CPCM, and CPSA. I'm a Certified Professional Strategic Advisor (CPSA). The CMA also provides a wealth of information and resources to help support their members which predominantly include mainstream brands and retailers. For any natural companies listening, the reason this matters is because category management includes the advanced strategies that the big brands rely heavily upon. The point being is that if you want to play at that level, you need to BE at that level. That's what the focus of this podcast is, all about to help small natural brands and retailers compete head-to-head, toe-to-toe with the big guys. I would like to thank the CMA for supporting this important cause and for bringing this information to you. If you want to learn more about the CMA and how they work with brands, you can always connect with me or reach out to them directly. I'll put links to them and Category partners, my guest on this webinar, in the show notes and on this podcast webpage. Here are Adam Brohimer and Tom Barnes with CATEGORY PARTNERS Download the show notes at: brandsecretsandstrategies.com/session39.

In this episode we discuss the antics and power politics in play between Rome and the Chinese Patriotic Catholic Association (CPCA)**, especially the significance of the current Roman Bishop in White ordering a duly-appointed Bishop in China to step down in favor of an excommunicated, schismatic member of the CPCA. As long as a given tactic of Satan works he will continue to use it, and the “divide and conquer” tactic is one that has worked all too well throughout human history. We also discuss how “Divide et Impera” has played out in the Church Militant from Apostolic times through the current day, with an emphasis on the formation and early history of the Society of Saint Pius X and what is currently known as Traditional Catholicism. **Yes, SuperNerd got the name of the ersatz Catholic Church in China wrong twice… and he’s chagrined and embarrassed about that. Why is important that our seniors matter? Our seniors are the fabric that holds a community together. They laid the foundation for the success of our communities, and are still a vital and important part of it’s ongoing success. We thought it was important that seniors and their caregivers have a place to ‘go’ weekly to learn, share ideas, share experiences and create a new online community for the betterment of everyone, especially seniors. On “Making Our Seniors Matter” today: Scott Terrio from Cooper & Co. joins us to chat about seniors co-signing loans and mortgages for their children, and the unique benefits and challenges this presents Scott also pitch hits for Constable Wells and joins Glenn in studio to talk about a current CRA SCAM targeting seniors; Rhonda Latrielle MBA, CPCA chats about how her business trains other businesses to provide an age-appropriate customer service experience for their 50-plus clients; This and more on today’s Making Our Seniors Matter! Phycobilins are light harvesting pigments of cyanobacteria and red algae. In cyanobacteria, four phycobiliproteins are organized in phycobilisomes: phycocyanin (PC), allophycocyanin (APC), and often also phycoerythrocyanin (PEC) or phycoerythrin (PE). Their phycobilin chromophores, linear tetrapyrroles, are generally bound to the apoprotein at conserved positions by cysteinyl thioether linkages. A final step in phycobiliprotein biosynthesis is the post-translational phycobilin addition to the various biliproteins. In vivo, the correct attachment of most chromophores is catalyzed by binding-site and chromophore-specific lyases. Only two such lyases, which both belong to the E/F-type were known at the beginning of this work. Two additional types, S/(U)-type and T-type lyase, have been characterized during this work. In addition, the correct structures of the products from all three lyase types have been verified, and evidence was obtained for the reaction mechanisms. This characterization relied on two methodological advances. The first is the use of a multi-plasmidic expression system for reconstitution of phycobiliproteins in E. coli. After cloning of apophycobiliprotein genes, phycobilin biosynthesis genes and (putative) lyase genes from several cyanobacteria, various phycobiliproteins could be biosynthesized in the heterologous E. coli system using dual plasmids containing the respective genes. This heterologous system produces higher yields than the in vitro reconstitution, it is nearly devoid of spontaneous binding, better reproducible, and more easily controlled. The second methodological advance is the consequent use of a combination of chromatographic, electrophoretic and spectroscopic tools that allowed a full characterization of the structure and binding sites of attached chromophores. This included, besides optical spectroscopy, in particular mass and magnetic resonance (1H-NMR) spectroscopy. Using the unmodified genes coding for both subunits of PEC, as well as their cystein mutants, three lyases were identified for the three binding site. Besides the already known isomerizing lyase, PecE/PecF, for Cys-84 of α-PEC, these are the two new lyases, CpcT (all5339) for Cys-153 of β-PEC, and CpcS (alr0617) for Cys-82 of β-PEC. The spectroscopic analysis proved that the chromophores (PCB and PVB)are correctly attached to these three binding sites. Similarly, three lyases were identified for the three binding sites of CPC. The well known heterodimeric lyase (CpcE/CpcF) catalyzes the covalent attachment of PCB to αC84 of CPC, CpcS catalyses the site-selective attachment of PCB to cysteine-β84 in CpcB; and CpcT for cysteine-β155 of CpcB. CpcE/F is specific for CpcA, while CpcS and CpcT can react with both CpcB and PecB. We also tested the lyase activity of the deoxyhyposyl-hydroxylase (DOHH) from the malaria parasite, Plasmodium falciparum. This enzyme has Heat-like repeats that are characteristic for the E/F-type lyases, but it had not chromophore-attaching activity. The substrate specificity of the new lyase, CpcS (coded by alr0617), was further tested with APC subunits; It is very unspecific with regard to the acceptor protein and attaches PCB to ApcA1, ApcB, ApcD ApcF, as well as to the product of an additional gene, apcA2; of unknown function that is highly homologous to apcA1 coding for the APC α-subunit. Obviously, this lyase has a much broader substrate specificity than the E/F-type lyases, but it has high site-specificity, attaching the chromophore exclusively to the Cys-84 (consensus sequence) binding site of the APC subunits. CpcS from Anabaena PCC7120 is a relatively simple system, it acts as a monomer, and does not require any cofactors. CpcS binds PCB rapidly (
