Welcome to the latest episode of Simply Trade podcast. Dive headfirst into this richly immersive conversation as hosts, Andy and Lalo, steer the show into the logistical heart of trade. Tapping into logistics and its monumental role on the trade, they host a special guest, none other than the logistic guru and CEO of FreightWaves, Craig Fuller. This is part 1 of 2 of our interview with Craig. The hosts and Craig plunge into a fascinating exploration of various sectors: 1. Impact of COVID-19 on the Transportation Industry: Craig Fuller discussed the significant effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on the transportation industry. According to Fuller, COVID-19 instigated a freight recession that began in the first quarter of 2020. This led to a substantial decline in freight volumes and overall market activities, hitting a low point in mid-May. 2. The Freight Industry's Recovery: Despite the substantial downturn, Fuller saw signs of hope for the industry. Recovery was evident as a gradual upturn in the freight industry began. Despite a significant 45% drop in manufacturing orders due to the impact of the pandemic, the industry has shown remarkable resilience and has begun to bounce back. 3. Boom and Bust Cycle in Logistics Industry: Fuller drew attention to the cyclical nature of the logistics industry. It reflects a three-year "hypercyclic" pattern, alternating between periods of boom and bust, which was further exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, causing the industry to hit extreme lows and highs within a compressed timeframe. This episode resonates with the subtleties of change within the logistical heartbeat of trade. The fresh insights Craig Fuller offers are invaluable, reflecting the indomitable resilience of the industry, pushing back against COVID-induced turmoil and heralding an imminent recovery. Greetings, and welcome back to the rose bros podcast. This episode we are joined by Craig Fuller - CEO and Founder of FreightWaves - the largest provider of proprietary high frequency data & market intelligence to the global supply chain industry (think Bloomberg for finance). Data on the movement of goods across the world (air, ocean, rail, truck) allows customers to understand the state of physical goods in the economy and manage their business operations more effectively. FreightWavesprovides supply chain data on about 85% of the physical goods in the global economy from Iowa to China - which in turn represents ~40% of the total world economy and trillions of dollars in value. As a result, this data is able to provider a good bellwether on the state of the global economy. Prior to founding FreightWaves, Fuller was the founder and CEO of TransCard, a fleet payment processor that was sold to US Bank. He also is a trucking industry veteran, having founded and managed the Xpress Direct division of US Xpress Enterprises, the largest provider of on-demand trucking services in North America. We sat down for a smooth cup of rose bros coffee and discussed how Freight waves helps supply chain business, the current oversupply of goods on the market and the resulting bullwhip effect, why North American supply chains are vulnerable, how supply chain is a good bellwether for the economy and why its pointing to dark clouds now.Enjoy! This episode is also available on YouTube, so check out the rose bros channel, and if you enjoyed the conversation, subscribe to the channel.
