In this episode, James Jefferies and Jane Gulliford Lowes engage in a lively discussion with author Luke Turner about the complexities of Bomber Command's history, model-making, the legacy of the Dambusters film, his fascination with 158 Squadron, and the personal stories of individuals like Bertram Warr. They explore themes of masculinity, memory, and the importance of memorials, while also addressing the overshadowing of lesser-known squadrons and operations. In this episode I'm reading from Graeme Rendall's book 'The French UFO Wave of 1954'.In the second half of 1954, France was the location of numerous UFO sightings, some of which involved encounters with or observations of strange beings. It was the first large-scale "wave" of reports that occurred outside the United States since the start of the modern-day UFO phenomenon at the end of June 1947. A somewhat sceptical public found themselves bombarded with almost daily stories of strange lights, spherical craft or disc-shaped objects in their local newspapers, the press faithfully reporting on the hundreds of incidents that came to their attention. A few were hoaxes but the vast majority involved ordinary French citizens faced with the complete unknown. This new book lists most of the cases where at least some detail beyond a simple "light in the sky" is mentioned, culled from contemporary newspaper accounts. It tells the story of a perplexed nation, one that found it difficult to make sense of what was happening. Witnesses being paralysed, vehicle engines stalling and small hairy beings - the cases here provide a fascinating look at the French UFO "wave" of 1954.BioGraeme Rendall is a full time author and a commentator on the Unidentified Aerial Phenomenon (UAP) issue. He is also a contributor to the "The Debrief", an American news website dealing with cutting edge science, tech and defence news, and a frequent guest on various podcasts looking at UAP. He also writes articles on the subject for UAP Media UK. Between 1990 and 1992, he was the Editor of an amateur aviation magazine. Graeme has written a critically-acclaimed work looking at the "Foo-Fighters" witnessed during World War Two and the numerous wartime cases that occurred before the term was coined in November 1944. He has been an aviation and World War Two history enthusiast from an early age, when he was given Airfix model aircraft kits "to keep him quiet". This week I'm talking to Graeme Rendall about his book 'Chasing Shadows: Aerial UFO Encounters 1955-1956'.By January 1955, the United States Air Force had already established and terminated two official UFO investigation programs, and was now well into its third, Project Blue Book. Thousands of pages of witness testimony, reports, and analysis had already been typed up and yet little if anything was known about UFOs. These strange objects and lights were written off as planets, weather balloons, and other aircraft, whilst unidentified radar contacts were labelled as nothing more than weather-related phenomenon (“anomalous propagation”). The official USAF response regarding UFOs was that they simply did not exist.Yet reports of sightings continued, reported by airline pilots, jet interceptor crews, and private plane owners across the world. Chasing Shadows: Aerial UFO Encounters 1955-1956 describes in detail their encounters during those two years, drawing from official air force intelligence reports, newspaper articles, and testimony of individual witnesses.Chasing Shadows complements the author's three previous volumes dealing with reports between 1946 and 1954 (Dawn of the Flying Saucers, Flying Saucer Fever and Intercept & Identify), plus his critically-acclaimed examination of the "Foo Fighter" phenomenon, UFOs Before Roswell: European Foo Fighters, 1940-1945.BioGraeme Rendall is a full time author and a commentator on the Unidentified Aerial Phenomenon (UAP) issue. The feature of interest, "The Power of Solitude" suggests our solitary hobby is good for our health if you exclude the chemicals we may be breathing in! The term used is "crafting solitude" where we carry out a meaningful solitary activity which reduces stress and anxiety and improves relaxation. Here in the UK some doctors working in our National Health Service ( still 'free' at the point of delivery) do social prescribing linking people to activities and social groups to improve well-being. Help for Heroes has already established that model making helps with mental health. So maybe the next time I visit my GP, I will be prescribed an Airfix model kit!Best wishes to the team.ArtiSurrey. We've reached number 10 on our list of the greatest products we make in Britain. And it's a true icon. The Spitfire. In this episode of The Factory Next Door, we visit two factories both making their own versions of this legendary plane. In Margate, we pop into model maker Airfix to chat with researcher Luke about their 1:24 scale Spitfire replica. And in a hanger in Oxfordshire, we meet Paul who – along with a group of volunteers – are building a squadron of Spitfires that will tour the country (appropriately called the Ace Squadron). We learn what makes this plane special, the beauty of pop rivet patterns, take a flight in a Spitfire simulator, look around an empty factory, and so, so much more.Say hello on Instagram, search the ‘The Factory Next Door' or email steve@thefactorynextdoor.comLet's make more makers!
Graphic designer, painter and sleeve artist, Andie Airfix was born in Scotland but grew up in Warrington in the north west of England. After studying art and English literature at Chester teacher training college, he spent almost a year teaching art and English in Southampton. In 1970 he started travelling around the USA, Canada and Mexico, a trip funded by selling psychedelic paintings to poster companies in New York and San Francisco. On his return to the UK, he spent some time in Devon where he concentrated on painting and writing before heading off again to India for a few years. His is a fascinating life story, involving some of the biggest rock and pop bands of the 1970s–1990s with whom he formed an integral and lasting creative bond. Sadly, Andie Died in 2018 a few years after relocating his design studio called 'Satori' from London to Brighton, UK. You can find out more about Andie's life and work on his website but in this podcast episode I speak with his brother, Tony, all about Andie's work, design legacy and the impressive exhibition that he has created at Warrington Museum and Art Gallery - Saturday 3 February until Sunday 31 March 2024. A book about Andie's extensive portfolio is also in the works by Tony and I'll share information about it in the 'Art on your sleeve' Facebook group as soon as I hear anything. “You see a photograph and you'd be hard pressed to say that's a model… I can still get tricked.”Many of us will have nostalgic memories of building Airfix model kits of planes as a child. In the UK, the name 'Airfix' has become practically synonymous with plastic models of the iconic British WW2 fighter plane, the Spitfire. However, Airfix (and their parent company Hornby Hobbies) make model kits of a wide range of vehicles and aircraft, from sports cars to classic and modern jets, trains, tanks and even warships. Their models range in complexity all the way from starter kits to very complex designs. Senior Designer Chris Joy tells us about the development of new kits and the detailed research which is required to make Airfix models the most detailed and accurate representations of planes and vehicles as possible. He explains the artistry involved in putting together the smallest details on model planes, including making the outside look weathered and beaten, and discusses how computer-aided design has helped models to evolve over the years. We then speak to Head of Strategic Delivery Jamie Buchanan who tells us why he thinks people are still so drawn to practical model kits in a world of technology. We also hear from Brian Thompson, who heads up PTC's CAD division. He explains why PTC's CAD software CREO is such a crucial part of allowing designers to capture the small details of aircraft which make the Airfix models so accurate. Find out more about Airfix here.Find out more about CREO here.Your host is Paul Haimes from industrial software company PTC. Episodes are released bi-weekly. This week the I am reading from Stephen Hawley Martin's book 'You Are Eternal: Infinite Tomorrows Await You' and Graeme Rendall's book 'Intercept and Identify: Aerial UFO Encounters, 1953-1954'.Stephen Hawley MartinWhat if you knew for certain that you are an eternal spiritual being that is temporarily residing in a kind of spacesuit—aka a human body—that allows you to operate in this reality, and that there are other, nonphysical realities you will go to when your spacesuit wears out? What if you knew that if you get bored in nonphysical reality, you could choose to come back to this one? Would that change how you think about life? Would it change your behavior? The author relates a theory that explains what reality is really all about, and he relates the facts that back it up. Not only does it explain what caused the Big Bang and how life on earth came to be, it makes clear that faith is not required to believe your consciousness will continue after your body dies. It also indicates that you possess what likely has been until now undreamed of power.BioBestselling author Stephen Hawley Martin has had a half dozen titles achieve bestseller status on Amazon.com and is the only three-time winner of the Writer's Digest Book Award, having won first prize twice for fiction and once for nonfiction. He also has won a first prize for visionary fiction from Independent Publisher and a first prize for nonfiction from USA Book News. In all, he has written seventeen books under his own name and has ghostwritten a half dozen more. For two years, he hosted a successful weekly Internet talk radio show, “The Truth about Life,” which averaged 30,000 listener downloads per episode.https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0C2J6HST6https://www.shmartin.com/Graeme RendallIn the aftermath of two weekends in July 1952 when airspace over the American capital was filled with strange lights and radar contacts, the US Air Force sought to shut down the UFO issue, falling back on "identifications" such as balloons, weather anomalies and cockpit reflections. Yet the following two years saw numerous reports being filed about encounters with strange objects and lights in the skies over the United States - and elsewhere around the world. This book looks at pilot and aircrew sightings from 1953 and 1954 - two years' worth of incredible reports from across the globe involving fighter jet and transport crews, airliner captains and private pilots. Many witness statements were dismissed in favour of explanations that simply don't make sense when referring back to the only evidence - the testimony itself. This new book continues the author's look at aerial UFO encounters during the 1940s and 1950s - and the fevered attempts behind the scenes to explain the problem, and when that wasn't possible, to diminish its importance entirely.BioGraeme Rendall is a full time author and a commentator on the Unidentified Aerial Phenomenon (UAP) issue. The fourth episode on our mini-series on the maritime history of Australia takes us to Perth and the workshop of Gerry Westenberg. Gerry has been hand-crafting scale model ships for well over 50 years and has built more than 130 in that time. He started this lifelong job by trying to modify a 1/600 scale Airfix kit of HMS Ajax to be HMAS Perth...with mixed success. Over time he has improved his skills and found a scale that works for him – 1/192 - based on the Empirical scale of 1 inch to every 16 feet. Over the years Gerry has built ships such as RMS Queen Mary, a Roman bireme, an Egyptian Royal Barge, HMS Hood, HMAS Sydney I, II, III and IV, RY Britannia, and HMS Barham, to name but a few. He has had two exhibitions held at the Western Australian Maritime Museum in Fremantle, the first in 2019,with the second held in 2021, whilst a third exhibition will commence on April 8th this year running for approximately 3 months. The centrepiece of Gerry's collection consists of over 40 Australian fighting ships tracing all major classes from the inception of the RAN to today's modern fleet. To find out more Dr Sam Willis visited Gerry at his workshop. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

The 2nd series of the "Hornby: A Model World" comprises of 11 new 1 hour episodes going behind the scenes at Hornby, Britain's best loved model making company, to reveal 'how they do it': How they go about shrinking mighty trains, planes & automobiles to create a new generation of miniature masterpieces in the worlds of Airfix, Corgi , Scalextric & Hornby. Montana Hoerem is a working writer, who has now enjoyed a good 8 years with the 100 year old Hornby group, rising to a leadership role as Head of Brand. Her enthusiasm is infectious. Her knowledge is impressive. Her optimism is persuasive. Her smiling voice is a constant tonic! And she has her own family back story, too. Her mother was born in Montana, hence her name. Her father returned to Australia before Montana was born. Don't worry - Montana has not just survived, she has thrived. She has an MA in Creative Writing and she is totally committed to the opportunity of lifelong learning. Was it not Albert Einstein who suggested that the two essential elements for a great life are love and work? Montana loves her work, loves her family and her colleagues. She loves words. She loves running. She loves ideas. She also loves cake! All kinds of cake! Montana is heard here promoting a new 11 episode series on TV that takes the viewer behind the scenes at the Hornby headquarters in Margate and introduces some of the company's most celebrated customers. including Pete Waterman and Jules Holland. Now it is even trending on TikTok! It is becoming much more of a family hobby, involving imaginative layout, scenery and realism, rather than a predominantly solitary activity. 100 years young, Hornby Is offering 21st century miniature enthusiasts a brilliant opportunity to relax with a rewarding nostalgic escape into a private world, accompanied by other family memTune in next week for more stories of 'Distinction & Genius' from The Good Listening To Show 'Clearing'. Episode 31 of Paranormal Stories. This week I'm talking about Graeme Rendall's book 'Dawn Of The Flying Saucers: Aerial UFO Encounters & Official Investigations 1946-1949'.On 24th June 1947, a private pilot by the name of Kenneth Arnold entered the history books when he reported seeing a line of nine strange fast-moving objects near Mount Rainier in Washington State. His sighting - and the twisting of his description of the objects' movement through the air into the phrase "flying saucer" - sparked off a phenomenon which continues to baffle, intrigue and inspire millions of people seventy-five years later. The UFO subject remains unsolved even now, with new reports of civilian and military encounters emerging in the 2020s.Arnold's sighting was not the first in 1947, but the press attention it received and the subsequent reports of flying discs and other mysterious objects by airliner crews and military pilots stirred the US Army Air Force into action. By the end of the year, the newly-created US Air Force had established its first official UFO investigation program, Project Sign, charged with collecting sightings reports and analysing them. Sign would give way to a similar program, Grudge, in 1949.Whilst there are several infamous UFO sightings from the 1946-1949 period in addition to Kenneth Arnold's, many of the aerial encounters that took place during this time are much less well-known. This new work charts these events, including aircrew testimony and official evaluations. Intertwined around these sightings are the stories of the USAF investigation programs Sign and Grudge, which are fascinating in themselves. If you consider yourself knowledgeable about the UFO subject, this book should still hold information that you've never come across before. For those readers who have come to Ufology after the ground-breaking events of December 2017, when three infamous US Navy FLIR videos showing mysterious craft were publicly released, this work will give you an incredible insight into the early years of the modern-day UFO phenomenon, setting the present day into context. If you don't necessarily believe in this sort of thing, then the story of how something gripped a nation is interesting in itself. Finally, if you are sitting on the fence in terms of what you believe about UFOs, this book offers a relatively unbiased look at what transpired between 1946 and 1949. The author is not trying to tell you that men from Mars were invading the Earth, or aliens from Zeta Reticuli. However, something was going on back then - and continues to even now, seventy-odd years later.BioGraeme Rendall is a full time author and a commentator on the Unidentified Aerial Phenomenon (UAP) issue. This week I'm talking to Graeme Rendall about his book 'Dawn Of The Flying Saucers: Aerial UFO Encounters & Official Investigations 1946-1949'.On 24th June 1947, a private pilot by the name of Kenneth Arnold entered the history books when he reported seeing a line of nine strange fast-moving objects near Mount Rainier in Washington State. How do you fit a cow with rigour mortis into the back of a car? What on earth is a half eternity ring? And what will happen when the seagulls finally come for you? If you want to know the answers to these burning questions then this week's The Gavel and The Gabble is for you. Listen in for amusing anecdotes from auctioneers Harry and Simon on the rise of Airfix, Rob Becketts LEGO sets, and find out the more interesting ways customers have tried to take their purchases home. Now we know there are lots of TV shows about buying and selling antiques and collectables but we thought followers of this podcast would like to hear about what goes on behind the scenes of an actual working auction house as we go about our daily business, the characters we meet, the things we find, and the things we wished we had never found. Famed for our slightly different auctioneering style, constant chatting on the rostrum, awful jokes. Stick with us as we bunk off to record anecdotes, interview others in the industry and basically gabble on. Music from Lemonmusicstudio Production by David Burd

As you wander round the streets of our magnificent capital city today, you’ll probably most likely be aware of all the shops and offices, albeit deserted if we are still in lockdown. What you will not see so much of are the relics of London’s glorious industrial past, unless of course, that is you know where and what to look for. From brewing giants such as Guinness, toy manufacturers like Airfix and Lesney who made the world-famous matchbox cars, to the aircraft makers like De Haviland and Handley Page—these and many more instantly recognisable brands had major and often iconic bases in London. Urban archaeologist Mark Amies author of London’s Industrial Past understands the importance of our magnificent machine age, when London was once the powerhouse of the world. Join us as we wander the street of London in search of what once was Londoners very essence. This is Your London Legacy. “If you’re not careful—there are bits of London that you’ll never go and see.” 6:50 Mark’s love for London’s industrial past and architecture in general might trace back to car rides with his father. He would sit in the back of the car as his dad pointed out buildings and what factories they used to be, the people that worked there. There were stories hiding there, histories fading to mist, and Mark found himself yearning to dig into those histories and uncover what used to be there. These places were once social hubs, where people met and went out after work to bond and form relationships. While Mark admits not all factory work was glamorous or free of danger, the social impact of industrialization is undeniable on a social level. “Fortunately for me, they thought I was some kind of expert. I always thought myself more of an enthusiast.” 14:00 The road to Mark’s book was a long one, but started off when he was looking to do something more with his life outside of work. So, he went back to his passion for London’s history and started a blog—back when blogs were the cool thing to do. This led to him writing a few pieces for the Londonist, which can still eb found today, and ultimately led him to filling in slots for BBC Radio London on the Robert Elms program. It was on Mark to take his experience there and approach publishers directly, without an agent, to propose his book: London’s Industrial Past, which he landed by letting his enthusiasm and background shine. And the book is remarkable, not only for its written content but the images that accompany it. Some of these were holdovers from companies wanting giant, wide flyover pictures of their factory and grounds to show off in boardrooms—and the detail you can see in them is remarkable. The book covers industry from aeronautics, to biscuits, to toys—and covers a wide breadth of the history and modern day usage of the facilities—since some were located on areas that formed into their own miniature cities, with businesses and healthcare facilities built specifically for the workers there. London’s Industrial Past is a remarkable read, and guess what—Mark is working on a second, more specific and focused book about London’s past as we speak. Make sure to keep your eye on him via social media, and as he would want, keep your eye on the hidden histories of London as well. Ever thought of making your own playset for vintage Star Wars action figures because 'those that should' back in the day didn't cater for all of our vintage cardboard enthusiasm? Thats exactly what young Lee Gregory thought and decided to do something about it. Hear his unique Manchester-based experience as he rights those wrongs. The lads debate further "Vintage 2.0":- most people have collected everything figure wise, it appears we are turning slightly to the continuation of the line and wanting new-old-new stuff In Rebel Briefings Richard recalls a story where vintage is found behind a hole in a wall, we look at the prices realised at Astons final auction and another Propstore auction unearths a few oddities. The Licensee section this month talks AIRFIX, that loveable brand of kits we all remember accidentally glueing to grandma when we were kids, Andy Preston and Mr. Spoons share some great memories. Spain's migrant fruit pickers face tougher challenges than usual in the era of coronavirus. Hannah Wilson is a lawyer in the Madrid office of Women's Link Worldwide, which campaigns to advance the rights of women and girls, and explains how the industry sources migrant workers from Morocco. Spanish strawberry picker Ana Pinto who runs workers' rights group Jornaleras en Lucha describes the poor working practices she has seen Moroccan migrants subjected to. And Peter Andrews, head of sustainability at the British Retail Consortium, tells us whether his organisation feels labour standards in Spanish fruit fields need to be improved. Also in the programme, Eric Schmidt, adviser to the US Department of Defence, and former head of the internet giant Google, has told the BBC that Chinese electronics firm Huawei is a threat to western nations' national security. BBC security correspondent Gordon Corera brings us the latest. Plus, Lyndon Davies, chief executive of model train company Hornby, tells us how the coronavirus pandemic has actually led to an increase in sales for the firm, which also owns the toy car racing brand Scalextric and model plane maker Airfix.
What would Brian Bevan say is honoured by the presence of the BBC's Mr Rugby League, Dave Woods. Strap in for a marathon podcast, as Dave discusses his endurance rowing achievement and his feeble pet guinea pig he keeps in his garage that he's trying to Mirror into a fine physical specimen. We discuss Dave's road to journalism - and Lincolnshire - but more importantly we discover the difference between catering at a 21st birthday party and a 25 year wedding anniversary bash. But the beatings don't stop there, as a lanky Kangaroo fullback is slayed by Welsh-side-step-wizardry and a man the size of Sampson. Dennis looks for a forward for his new RL cookbook, but will Dave save Dennis' bacon? Sam's Statistics are undermined by a Locker Cup programme. And just what colour would you paint Dave's genitals with the choice of only two Airfix paints? Enjoy and please stay safe.
Pete Long visited the Blue Vanguard Jazz Club on February 27th 2020. He recorded this conversation and tunes with Craig, Coach and for one night only Jim Rintoul and bass. Pete's career began fairly inauspiciously at the age of 18 deep within the bowels of the Nat West bank in Marble Arch putting bank statements into envelopes. An unfortunate incident involving a picture of a lady and a horse being accidentally sent to the Convent of the Sacred Heart along with their financial records led to a re-think and a few days later, Pete had enrolled at the Royal London College Of Music. After a couple of years of hard study, ruthless self-denial and curry, Pete was out on the road with the National Youth Jazz Orchestra, and during his time there, got to play all five saxophone parts, the solo flute part, the bass guitar, and on one rather messy occasion, the fourth trumpet. Having the unusual inclination to play modern jazz on the rather “old-fashioned” clarinet led to several works for clarinet and big band being commissioned during his stay, and established a tradition of clarinet solos in NYJO which has plagued the saxophone section ever since. After the apprenticeship had been served, fame and endless riches were only around the corner in the form of the John Simons Rhumba Showband on the QE2, and Pete's orange frilly flamenco shirtsleeves and sassy sombrero became one of the familiar sights in the bars, clubs and clinics around the ports of the Caribbean Sea. At this time, Pete acquired the knack of bandleading, assembling ad-hoc ensembles on the ship for various passenger and crew functions. Serious playing work followed on the return to Blighty, as the award winning Sax Quartet Itchy Fingers had a job going on Alto Sax. Pete passed the audition, and toured Brazil, Venezuela, North Africa, Russia and Europe during his three year stay there, working with, amongst others, Dizzy Gillespie, John Scofield, Chick Corea and Supersax. Due to an inspired bit of orchestral management by “a friend”, The bulk of Pete's work for the next six years was in and around the West End theatres, where his versatility on many different woodwind instruments stood him in good stead, most notably on the notorious Clarinet solo in the closing sequences of the hit show Oliver. In recent years, Pete has returned to bandleading at the head of an organisation called the Echoes Of Ellington. This is a 21 piece band which sets out to re-create the Duke Ellington sound by using original manuscripts from the Smithsonian Institute in Washington DC, and has achieved great critical acclaim and commercial success. Recently, Pete's skills developed as front man for the Echoes Of Ellington have led him to presenting Big Band Special, the weekly magazine show for big band buffs on BBC Radio 2, and talking on the early morning news review on GLR. Pete was recently involved in live and studio work with Jools Holland's Rhythm and Blues Orchestra, the BBC Radio Big Band, arranging for and directing the poll-winning 9;20 De-Luxe. 10-piece swing band and re-creating the music of Dizzy Gillespie in quintet and big band formats. In the course of playing with Jools, Pete has worked with a diversity of popular icons from Vinnie Jones to Lionel Richie and The Blind Boys Of Alabama to Sting. Working with Jools Holland has also enabled Pete to arrange music for Sir Paul McCartney, Chrissie Hinde, Jane Horrocks, Ray Davies and the unique talents of Marianne Faithfull! The famous oboe intro on "Handbags and Gladrags" by the Stereophonics is also Pete's work, and a recent high was playing solo baritone saxophone in Dr John's UK band. In his spare time, he makes Airfix planes in his garden shed and is restoring an old Karmann Ghia. Thank you to Yamaha UK for the above

Historian Kasia Tomasiewicz discusses how to commemorate war. Reporting for her first day shadowing the curatorial team at the Imperial War Museum, Kasia found herself conflicted. Feeling awe at the size of the tanks, planes and other machines of war, and remembering the pleasurable associations from Airfix kits and games with her siblings from her own childhood, she tried to balance these feelings with the awareness that the objects also embody death and destruction. How do these different responses affect what Kasia describes as the 'pleasure culture of war'? Producer: Giles Edwards.

Pre-Christmas edition: Bitcoin update (and does money exist anyway)… Branson, Sugar, Trump and the illuminati… real cream, imaginary milk, Dale Vince and dreadlocks… Eden and Venus Projects, Dom Joly and ringtones… experiences vs possessions… last-minute present shopping… better-organised better halves… Bristol vs Cheltenham… elves, robots and Tesco home deliveries… stamp collecting and painting Airfix models, puzzles, dry stone walling and the aesthetics of painting by numbers, meccano, mousetrap and spirograph, broken LED watches and stapling thumbs on Christmas morning… and a jingle!
The sound and fury: the mighty rumbles of both the Rolls Royce Merlin and the Holden 173 cubic inch straight-6 represent victories in the 1941 Battle of Britain and 1974 Australian family suburban mobility, respectively. And just as the farty growl of a Kingswood was the sound of childhood for us here at Better Breeders, so too was the highly toxic stench of Airfix poly cement the noxious odour of our cherished childhood. To the amazement of Benlife and Theblackdouglas, Airfix kits are still very much around and popular. Better Breeders discuss in #106 the enduring aesthetics of Airfix kits and wonder whether today's children still re-enact the Battle of Britain up at the oval on Saturday afternoons with the aid of a 'borrowed' Bic lighter and a jar of metho, as did we? Or has the age-of-screens ameliorated the urge to engage in pyrotechnics for the serotonin rush? Is this a good thing? Better Breeders have always thought the broadcast radio AM band to be a good thing. "GO! YOU GOOD THING!" is an oft heard phrase on the average Australian back porch on Saturday afternoon, accompanying the dish-licker race call on 2KY. Better Breeders do like dogs but do not condone gambling; not that we are wowsers - Benlife and Theblackdouglas have indeed been known to enjoy a Reschs DA shandy on occasion. But we prefer 2SM and 2WS over any station on the FM band. Indeed, it is Better Breeders' ambition not only to comprise programming on an AM station but also to dominate Australian radio...from the obscurity of the AM band. Hear the Better Breeders controversial and curious AM band manifesto in episode #106. Benlife has just turned 50 and Theblackdouglas is also just about to 'raise the bat' for his half-century. The existential question - to party or not to party for a 50th? - is examined at length. Who should - and should not - be on the guestlist? Exciting & inappropriate guests v obligated dullards? To have a costume party v 'smart casual' - i.e. dressing like an off duty policeman. Our two master podcasters this week also debate whether or not to revive their previously unfulfilled Australian Kraftwerk Show project as entertainment at the 50th parties. Better Breeders believe the name of their Brechtian/ bank manager-esque style band should be 'Macrame'. We invite listeners to email in if they have a better suggestion for the name. Whist such an artistic venture is a no-brainer, Better Breeders believe the perennially popular flashmob is never a good idea at a 50th birthday party. Provocative? Sure. Listeners will have to tune in to #106 to hear the reasons! As we all reach 50, do we get any younger? Clearly, no. Many of us refuse, quite rightly, to go gentle into that good night. 'Boys' weekends proliferate at our tender age as a result. In #106, Benlife and Theblackdouglas decode and elucidate the sometimes complex and confusing playground laws of the jungle for these midlife rump-sniffing symposiums. Boys toys and the evolution of former Alpha males in to Beta and even Gamma males. We told you it was tricky. We have diagrams and Excel spreadsheets. No wuckers, mate.
The Vintage Rebellion returns with a plethra of changes. Simon McOwan joins the team for his first show as a full time host, alongside Andy Goulding who joins the team as guest host for this month. Derek Ho joins Stuart and Simon for this months main interview as we delve into his collection and growing up with Star Wars in Singapore. The lads get together for possibly the most varied New Acquisitions yet, where the conversation ranges from the Popy range to Airfix kits. Simon pulls a Hutchinson with a Palitoy catalogue, Richard speaks of a beater Kea Moll and gets introduced to Uncle Gundy beaties. The main element is an in depth discussion on Luke Skywalker original... or is it Farmboy??? Rebel Briefings sees the guys bravely tell Ron Salvatore (from a good distance away) that he's got something wrong on a SWCA blog post. This is followed up with a cracking interview on a diorama display and a closing of the baggiegate story... for now. Grant says goodbye to the podcast with his final Beyond The Toys section, as he speaks with Jonathan McElwain for the concluding part of looking at food tie ins. We also have a Farthest From special where we here from Edd Grant, Dan Burgess, Scott Cato, Stephen Savory, Darren Quinn and Jason Smith who all attended the show. And watch out at the end as Episode 40 will see the team return to a permament five piece and we announce the final member to make up the crew. We hope you enjoy the show.
