Married Man: Live at Sonic Masala Fest, Greenslopes Bowls Club, 17 August 2019 Married Man began life as the solo project of Sydney musician Sarafina Pea, expanding in 2017 with the addition of bassist Kim Sukit and drummer Marnie Vaughn. A double A-side 7", "Meet Me At Penn Station/Clear As Hell" was released in 2017 and in 2019 the band launched their debut album, "Hard Bargain". This set features Owen Penglis, who recorded the band's album, filling in on bass. Recorded by James Fearn-Wannan Mixed by Branko Cosic Life Strike: Live at Sonic Masala Fest, Greenslopes Bowls Club, 17 August 2019 Though a Melbourne band, none of the three members of Life Strike are locals. Bassist Nick Pratt is originally from New Zealand, previously playing in the band Deaf Wish. Guitarist Patrick McCabe and drummer Scotty Brique both come from Brisbane, McCabe having played in Dollar Bar and Brique in Nova Scotia, Seaplane and Air Jordans. Playing their first show in 2016, the band released a self-titled 7" EP on Unwound Records in 2017. In 2019 their first album "Primitive Future" was released, featuring songs depicting an offbeat, post-apocalyptic future through the lens of upbeat, Flying Nun-influenced post-punk. Recorded by Duncan Adamson Mixed by Finn Diggles Show production, engineering and host: Scott Mercer Originally aired via Zed Digital, 7-8pm, Sunday 22 March, 2020

As the sun begins to sink to the west of Eclectic Kettle, we're trying to bring back some of our favourite guest hosts from over the years. This week it's Johan Oskarsson from 1.21 Gigawatts. This week is also really special as we'll be featuring excerpts of Ben's interview with Super Furry Animals front-man Gruff Rhys. He's here to talk about his new solo record Babelsberg, and his show next week at the Chapel in San Francisco.Gruff is a smart, thoughtful man and one of Ben's all time musical heroes, so this was a treat. The full interview is featured alongside this show as a special standalone episode (along with a transcript, since we were recording a Welsh accent over the telephone.) Listen in full here. You can win a pair of tickets for Gruff Rhys at The Chapel by visiting our giveaway page. He's always a delight, but as you'll hear in the interview, this album in particular should make for an especially good show. Email giveaways@bff.fm with the subject “Gruff” to win! Deaf Wish: Starting in 2007 in MELBOURNE, Deaf Wish have been making flat out rock and roll noise that straddles the fine line between melody and chaos. Their intense sound is backed up by a ferocious live show that has seen them tour all over the world. The heart of Deaf Wish’s sound lies in their philosophy; Keep it loud and keep it simple. To further strengthen their rep as a hard hitting rock n roll group they have released one EP and one Album through legendary Seattle Label Sub Pop. Recorded at PBS Fm Studios, Melbourne, 2nd February 2016. Recorded & mixed by Alicia Saye and Paul Maybury. Mastered by Paul Maybury. Deep Heat: Deep Heat began in 2010 with two bassists who wanted to play guitar, and a guitarist who wanted to play bass. Their frantic punk rock sound is topped off with three shouting vocalists that creates a kind of chaos that could cave the walls in at any moment while you shout along with them. Recorded at PBS Fm Studios, Melbourne, 2nd February 2016. Recorded & mixed by Alicia Saye and Paul Maybury. Mastered by Paul Maybury. Bearhug: Known for their hazy, slacker indie-rock vibes, Sydney band, Bearhug has a knack for infusing a sometimes carefree, sometimes agitated but always nostalgic sound into their music. Driven by walls of guitar hooks, noodling melodies, and bare-bones drums that careen under laidback vocals, the band captures that “hair-in-the-face” adolescence spirit that aligns them to 90s stalwarts Dinosaur Jr., Sonic Youth, and Screamfeeder. Recorded at Newtown Social Club, Sydney on the 18th of September, 2014. Recorded by Hugh Fasher and Harvey O’Sullivan. Mixed by Harvey O’Sullivan. Airing details: Originally via Zed Digital, 7-8pm, Sunday 27th March 2016. Show production and engineering: Branko Cosic.
Will, Barrett and Chris discuss music by Deaf Wish and Cambodia's Lost Rock and Roll, plus Jim Nabors and the University of Wisconsin Russian Folk Orchestra.
