Richard Langston in conversation with David Eastaugh https://feralhouse.com/the-clean/ https://www.amazon.co.uk/Clean-Dreamlife-Need-Rubber-Soul/ In 1978 in Dunedin , New Zealand, the Kilgour brothers, Hamish and David, and their schoolfriend Peter Gutteridge, got together to form a band called The Clean. When Robert Scott joined in 1980, the band found a combination that endured for nearly forty years. The Clean profoundly changed alternative music: hitting the New Zealand charts for months with a single made for 50 dollars, 'Tally Ho!'; helping establish Flying Nun and a music scene independent of the big labels; pioneering a low-fi, do-it-yourself approach to rock music; and touring internationally to influence bands like Pavement and Yo La Tengo. Raw and immediate, this is the story as told by members of The Clean and their inner circle - fellow musicians such as Chris Knox, Martin Phillipps, Graeme Downes and Ira Kaplan, friends and family, pub promoters and sound engineers, and their good friend, Richard Langston. From teenagers in a Dunedin practice room to New York City on 9/11 - this is the band's history as it unfolds.

From a $50 single to global influence, The Clean helped shape the sound and spirit of independent music as we know it.In this episode, we dive into the definitive story of The Clean—formed in Dunedin, New Zealand in 1978 by the Kilgour brothers and their friends—and how their raw, lo-fi approach sparked an entire movement. From the underground success of “Tally Ho!” to their role in building the Flying Nun scene, The Clean's impact can still be heard in bands like Pavement and Yo La Tengo.Featuring an in-depth interview with Richard Langston, author of The Clean: In the Dreamlife You Need a Rubber Soul, we explore the band's story in their own words—through the voices of the musicians, collaborators, and friends who lived it. brianturnershow.com, eastvillageradio.comRichard Langston, author of the new Clean biography In The Dreamlife You Need a Rubber Soul, joins The Brian Turner Show. The two will be chatting extensively about this brilliant band's 1978-2016 life, which was punctuated by periods on inactivity but inevitably continual returns that netted them deep and dedicated international fandom. Founded by brothers Hamish and David Kilgour, initial rotating lineups traversed their New Zealand homeland with budget tours, met with degrees of alienation from the established Auckland punk scene. Their psychedelic pastiche contained deep love of Barrett, The Beatles, Velvets, Hendrix, and Arthur Lee, which showed in their rudimentary DIY ethic; a heady formula out of fashionable step and thus triggering retreat back to their Dunedin hometown. However,  surprise success of their first single hitting the top 20 trigged a great leap forward for not only the Kilgours (now joined by future Bats founder Robert Scott), but a newfound communal scene in The Clean's wake that launched not only the Flying Nun label but a score of kindred spirit groups. They eventually achieved notoriety internationally despite periods of pause, and massively influenced a big slab of American indie rock units as well. Langston chronicles the great heights of this band live and on record with dutiful shoutouts to those in their circles who helped elevate them. Join Sandra for a profound and deeply healing conversation with author, spiritual medium, and former psychotherapist Tammy Lee Anderson. Tammy's extraordinary life has been shaped by not one, but three near-death experiences—beginning in infancy—which ignited a lifelong journey to understand the true nature of love and consciousness. In this episode, Tammy shares the vivid memories of her NDEs, including the overwhelming feeling of returning "home" to a place of peace and unconditional love. She discusses her diverse and fascinating path, which includes earning a 5th-degree black belt in Aikido, working as a hospital chaplain, and spending over a decade living in monastic communities, where she earned the playful nickname "The Flying Nun." Tammy opens up about her unique gifts, including her rare ability to create "Spirit Drawings"—sketching portraits of loved ones in spirit with guidance from the other side. She also shares wisdom from her 40 years as a healer, offering powerful insights on how suffering can be a doorway to deeper love and expansion, and why she believes we are here to "turn our grief into gratitude." It's time for another label spotlight, as we count down some of the best singles from the legendary New Zealand indie Flying Nun Records. Joining us for this discussion is a musician who, despite being on the other side of the world in Los Angeles, has felt the impact of Flying Nun very profoundly - Sharif Dumani from Exploding Flowers. Flying Nun was formed in Christchurch in 1981 by music store manager Roger Shepherd.  Described by The Guardian as "one of the world's great independent labels", Flying Nun is notable for bringing global attention to the "Dunedin Sound", often characterized by jangly guitars and a lo-fi, DIY production. Pivotal bands on the Flying Nun in the '80s and '90s include The Clean, The Chills, The Bats, Tall Dwarfs, Sneaky Feelings, Straitjacket Fits, 3Ds, Look Blue Go Purple, The Verlaines, and Jean-Paul Sartre Experience. The label continues to flourish, with a crop of 21st century artists like Betchadupa, Aldous Harding, Fazerdaze, The Courtneys, and Vera Allen. Exploding Flowers are a Los Angeles quartet who have crafted their own universe of guitar-based pop, with its flourishes of piano, organ, synthesizers, vibraphone and glockenspiel on top of a foundational rhythm section. Led by Sharif Dumani, who has worked with a variety of artists from '60s underground heroes Nick Garrie and Silver Apples; punk and post-punk pioneers such as Alice Bag (The Bags), Rachel Love (Dolly Mixture), Jowe Head (Swell Maps, Television Personalities), and Nikki Sudden (Swell Maps); and artists and bands like Cody Chesnutt, Sex Stains, the Moon Upstairs, Classics Of Love, and many more. Watermelon/Peacock is Exploding Flowers' third release packed with analog production, poetic lyricism, and the same strong melodies and hooks we've now come to expect from a band that prioritizes its songwriting with smart left turns. Both economic and expansive, they utilize all measures to craft something both beautiful, grand, and driving. Susan and Sharon continue their conversation with legendary 80s TV Lady -- and The Facts of Life writer/producer -- Margie Peters! In Part 2, the conversation turns to the challenges of making comedy out of date rape and toxic masculinity; “comedy sparring” in the Different World writer's room with Debbie Allen, Thad Mumford and Susan Fales-Hill; the creative opportunities for “women of a certain age”; and the lasting impact of the cruel moniker “The FATS of Life”. Margie Peters has written and produced over 140 hours of television, including The Love Boat, Valerie, One Day at a Time and A Different World. But her longest and best-known gig was the six years she spent on The Facts of Life.THE CONVERSATION “YOU'VE GOT SPUNK!” -- How watching The Mary Tyler Moore Show gave Margie the chutzpah to try her hand at TV writing!Margie shows off her 1989 IMAGE Award from Planned Parenthood for the “No Means No” episode of A Different World (S2; EP20): “It's in the living room next to my television.”The time Debbie Allen explained to Margie that Duane calling a girl “Big Butt Brenda” is a compliment -- not an insult! The joys of working with Valerie Harper on Valerie. A lot! On Episode 152 of the RETROZEST podcast, Curtis concludes the celebration of the 45th Anniversary of the premiere of STAR TREK: THE MOTION PICTURE! This film is a 1979 American science fiction drama directed by Robert Wise. It is based on and stars the cast of the 1966–1969 television series Star Trek created by Gene Roddenberry, who serves as producer. In the film, set in the 2270s, a mysterious and powerful alien cloud known as V'Ger approaches Earth, destroying everything in its path. Admiral James T. Kirk (William Shatner) assumes command of the recently refitted Starship Enterprise to lead it on a mission to determine V'Ger's origins and save the planet. Assisting Curtis in this endeavor in an exclusive interview is CRAIG HUXLEY, former child actor and inventor of the "Blaster Beam" (the musical instrument which makes the V'GER Sting sounds on the Star Trek: The Motion Picture soundtrack)! He has used this instrument in other films including Star Trek II and Star Trek III, as well as more modern films like 10 Cloverfield Lane. What's even more interesting is that Craig was also a child actor and he actually appears in the 1967 Star Trek TOS episode "Operation Annihilate!", wherein he portrayed Captain Kirk's nephew, Peter Kirk. The following year, he had a different role in the TOS episode "And the Children Shall Lead". Additionally, he appeared in television shows such as Bewitched, The Flying Nun, Kung Fu and The Brady Bunch. Craig is joined in this interview by his lovely and talented daughter FIONA HUXLEY, who is a wonderful singer, songwriter, actress, and speaker in her own right! She masterfully assists Craig in talking about his career in and out of Star Trek, and how so much of what he has done has weaved itself into so many parts of the pop culture of the 1960s all the way up to the present! Be sure and follow Craig on Facebook, X (Twitter), Instagram and YouTube! You may also follow Fiona on Facebook, X (Twitter), Instagram and YouTube! EPISODE 66 - “WHEN CLASSIC FILM'S SUPPORTING ACTORS STEAL THE SHOW” - 12/16/2024 There is nothing quite like watching a film when suddenly a supporting character comes in and walks away with the film. (Think THELMA RITTER, S.Z. SAKALL, or GALE SONDERGAARD in almost every one of their films!) This week we are focusing on some of our favorite supporting charters who come in and snatch that scene right about from under the big stars. "The lady in blue was seen bilocating more than 500 times from her cloistered convent in Spain, to the indigenous people of what is now Southwest America. More than 60,000 were baptized here." ---------- Hi there! Trapper Jack here. How did this one slip by the historians? As we gathered around the Thanksgiving table this year, somebody brought up the original Thanksgiving story of Pilgrims and such. The 102 souls who ventured from Europe for religious freedom. It gave me an opportunity to share the much bigger story which occurred in the same timeframe. Few seem to know about the 60,000 indigenous people, otherwise known as Indians, who were baptized into Christianity, right here in what we now call America. Since I have not talked about this on the podcast for more than five years, let's have a go of it again. It opens the door to the saintly types who walk among us, in particular, the venerable Maria de Ágreda (Mary of Jesus) who bilocated to what is now the southwest of the United States from her convent in Spain. This sister, in her blue habit, was seen flying in and out of what we now call Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas. Don't believe it? Just give a listen and watch the video link to a priest and the documentation. Send us a textToday's podcast features James Winter, the visionary co-founder and director of Brand X, which has been creating affordable spaces for artists since 2005. With a background in dramatic and performing arts, James recognized a need for reliable, affordable rehearsal and creative spaces, leading him to establish Brand X over 20 years ago. We spoke with James about the changing face of Sydney and the impact of the cost-of-living crisis on artists. He shared why he founded Brand X, how it operates, and his concerns about the lack of diverse arts programming in the city. James highlighted how this gap could lead to fewer opportunities for unique, high-quality art to be created and showcased in Sydney, ultimately affecting the city's cultural landscape. Brand X now manages the City of Sydney Creative Studios, offering a wide range of subsidised spaces for musicians, dancers, actors, and artists, available for both short-term and long-term hire in the heart of Sydney. Each year, Brand X also organizes Petite Suite, a performance residency set in a hotel. Fiona and I attended this year, and it was an incredible experience!Currently running is The Flying Nun, another Brand X initiative, which we highly recommend. For just $25, you can see these unique performances. The Flying Nun provides performing arts residencies where each project receives $2,600, a week in the venue, and a two-night performance run, keeping the majority of box office revenue. Grab your tickets here! Brand x - We re-purpose empty properties so performing, recording and visual artists can practice their craft.'We do this by working with Property Developers, Landlords and Local Governments to transform empty spaces into cultural places that allow artists to contribute, flourish and be sustainable in the community. We are driven by the belief that artists, when given appropriate space, inspire a renewed sense of belonging, harmony and pride of place for the entire community.Brand X provides subsidised workspace and creative development programs alongside facilities for hire where artists can traverse the entire creative process from development to presentation. We maintain a charter that is relevant and responsive to the Independent Arts sector dealing specifically with arts-practice sustainability, skills development and capacity building. Our objective is to afford artists the opportunity to take risks, innovate and to create work. This is achieved by offering artists affordable rates for hire, residencies and opportunities for income-generation through our activation projects. By providing Independent Artists with support while reinvigorating local communities we stimulate a vibrant cultural life for Sydney.'

Topics this segment include why Here Come the Brides is often overlooked by such other Screen Gems shows of the 1960s and '70s as Bewitched, I Dream of Jeannie, The Flying Nun, The Partridge Family, and The Monkees. Henry Jaglom trained with Lee Strasberg at The Actor's Studio in New York, where he acted, wrote, and directed plays.  And at age 21, he was best friends with an equally young Richard Pryor, as both struggled to break into stand-up comedy. Henry went to Hollywood to become famous. After appearing in TV series like, “The Flying Nun,” Henry wanted more and worked with Jack Nicholson to edit the movie, “Easy Rider.” Easy Rider's game-changing success launched Henry into a filmmaking career that continues today. He's written and directed 21 films, including “A Safe Place”, “Sitting Ducks”, “Tracks”, “Can She Bake a Cherry Pie,” and “Train to Zakopané.” He worked with Hollywood greats like Lee Grant, Maximillian Schell, Dennis Hopper, Roddy McDowell, Vanessa Redgrave, Faye Dunaway, David Duchovny. Henry made three movies with his best friend, Orson Welles. Their recorded, weekly lunches at Hollywood's “Ma Maison” resulted in Peter Baskind's revealing book,  “My Lunches with Orson.” Henry is as funny as he is brilliant.  Click now for a wild conversation!
