In our second episode of the season, we discuss Neil's superb, recently published book Music Films: Documentaries, Concert Films and Other Cinematic Representations of Popular Music. We explore their significance, evolution, and the complexities surrounding their creation and reception, along with Neil's reflections on the challenges of writing for diverse audiences and the expectations of music fans. The conversation touches on the validity of music films in modern culture, the messiness of the genre, and the importance of representation, particularly regarding black artists and women in music. They also examine the ethical implications of music documentaries and the power dynamics at play in the portrayal of artists.  Neil's book is so comprehensive we couldn't cover everything but some of the films under discussion include Don't Look Back (dir. Welsh musician and songwriter Gruff Rhys (of Super Furry Animals, the pop outfit known for their catchy songs and weird videos) poetically harnesses both the gritty and the trippy in his own music. But he's also a composer, producer, filmmaker and author. His latest release, the 25th album of his career (individually, collaboratively and as a member of various bands), is a solo album called Sadness Sets Me Free, sung in English, and left open to chance. Rhys and his bandmates play some of these new songs, in-studio. Sadness Sets Me Free by Gruff Rhys

Brìghde Chaimbeul, Rhodri Davies, Sam Amidon and Linda Buckley discuss the roles of tradition and place in music, and what they might think about when performing.Brìghde Chaimbeul is a Gaelic musician, composer and bagpipe player. Her music stems from traditional Gaelic material, particularly sourced from archival recordings, of songs, stories and music from the Highlands and islands of Scotland. He's released seven solo albums and regularly works with groups such as Hen Ogledd, Cranc, the Sealed Knot and Common Objects. Sam Amidon is an American singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist from Vermont. He plays the fiddle, guitar and banjo, and is a member of the Icelandic music collective/record label Bedroom Community. He has released a string of acclaimed albums, ranging in theme from interpretations of traditional Irish fiddle pieces to old-time melodies and tales from traditional American folk history. His collaborators include classical composer Nico Muhly, experimental composer/producer Ben Frost, composer/violinist Eyvind Kang, guitar legend Bill Frisell and veteran jazz drummer Milford Graves.Linda Buckley is an Irish composer and musician who creates electronic and acoustic music working across many disciplines, most notably film, and drone and dark ambient music. Careful of Your Keepers, the sixth full-length album by This Is the Kit, ends with the mantra-like benediction of "Be Okay". It's a beautifully delicate place to land, after ten songs that navigate their way through a world full of actions, their equal and opposite reactions, and the inextricably linked, overwhelmingly human dance between beauty and pain.  It's an album that starts with a goodbye. Or more precisely, it starts with a track called "Goodbye Bite", which carries on with plenty of bite throughout. The lyrics and imagery are are full of teeth and clawing and chewing. As Kate Stables sings on the chorus to the song "Inside Outside" – quoting Ralph Wiggum's celebrated Valentine note to Lisa on an episode of The Simpsons – "Bite off as much as you can chew/ I chew chew choose you."   Kate Stables is the singer/ songwriter/ multi-instrumentalist/ banjo enthusiast at the heart of this project. She grew up and fell in love with music in Winchester, one of Old England's oldest cities. She then moved on to the magical music city of Bristol, also the birthplace of groundbreaking acts like Portishead and Massive Attack. It's been a couple of decades since she moved to the artists' mecca of Paris, along with her husband (and fellow musician/bandleader) Jesse Vernon.  She and her musical collaborators have quietly built a body of work that's seen This Is the Kit become one of the most revered and distinctive creative forces in folk music. Their much-acclaimed 2023 album builds on 20 years of creative evolution, and finds them collaborating with a hero of Kate's from back in her teenage years – Gruff Rhys, who came to fame as the frontperson for Welsh '90s indie rock deities Super Furry Animals.  During the course of a wintertime 2024 tour through Alberta, Kate Stables stopped off at CKUA's Calgary studios to share an illuminating conversation about the elliptical nature of reality, her musical beginnings and creative evolution, drawing inspiration from a century-old banjo discovered in someone's attic, her surprisingly robust connections with Canada and/or Canadian music, working with one of her heroes, and what she always carries in her handbag.

On this week's Talkhouse Podcast we've got a pair of songwriting visionaries who came to prominence in the 1990s with well respected indie bands, and who both have vital new music out now: Jason Lytle and Gruff Rhys. Lytle started making music under the name Grandaddy back in 1992. He was pro skateboarder who found a second passion in home recording, and as you'll hear in this chat, kind of stumbled upon some guys who helped him flesh out the sound into something both humble and grand. The first run of Grandaddy albums—including Under the Western Freeway and 2000's classic The Sophtware Slump—felt a bit like quieter, more heartfelt cousins to the music the Flaming Lips were making at the time. After that initial run, the band eventually split up, only to reform sporadically over the years. Lytle also recorded some really fascinating solo records while also time—as you'll hear—to try and leave the music world behind a little bit. But he's been called back to the Grandaddy world with a brand new album called Blue WAV, and it's everything you'd expect from him brain: a mixture of sweet sadness with fuzzy guitars and synths from another age. Check out “Cabin in my Mind” from Blue WAV right here. The other half of today's conversation is Gruff Rhys, who just released his 25th album overall in a career that has spanned 35 years and taken some fascinating turns. He's still probably best known as the frontman of the colorful, psych-leaning Welsh pop band Super Furry Animals, which was signed to the venerated Creation Records label back in the 1990s, and whose records and visuals always zigged when you thought they might zag—that's a compliment. For his solo work, Rhys has been genre-expansive to say the least, but his brand new record, Sadness Sets Me Free, is refreshingly straightforward pop. As you'll hear in this chat, it was recorded pretty quickly, without a lot of fuss. It doesn't sound miles away from the new Grandaddy album, really. Check out “Bad Friend” right here. As it turns out, these two toured together a million years ago, and each has fond memories of that time—a soccer match, a special parting gift, and more. They also chat about Lytle's preference to stay away from the madness of the big city, even as he lives perilously close to it once again as well as their tendency to make up words in their songs when the ones that exist just won't do. Enjoy. Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast, and thanks to Gruff Rhys and Jason Lytle for chatting. If you liked what you heard, please follow Talkhouse on your favorite podcasting platform, and check out all the great stuff at Talkhouse.com. We had the pleasure of interviewing Alison Sudol over Zoom video! London-based, American singer-songwriter and actress Alison Sudol releases her autobiographical new album Still Come The Night via Kartel Music Group. Formerly known under the moniker A Fine Frenzy, this intimate album is an impassioned effort that signals the welcome return of a unique artist, a powerful voice armed with candid lyrics and authentic musicianship. Written and co-produced by Alison with London-based multi-instrumentalist, producer and composer Chris Hyson - half of adventurous collective Snowpoet - Still Come The Night owns its intimate sound to the backdrop at Giant Wafer studios, situated in an area of outstanding natural beauty, nestled between sheep fields in the Welsh countryside. Chris recruited Welsh twin brothers Lloyd and Alex Haines on drums and guitar and engineer Alex Killpatrick to join them at Wafer. There they worked together from morning until midnight, writing song after song, creating a hushed intimacy and sense of space among, even, the many layers of songs with their subtle harmonies and intricate instrumentation. While making the core of the album (those four songs were written by Alison while isolating at her friend's farm with her partner), she just found out she was pregnant when the world suddenly stopped, filming on Fantastic Beasts - the movie franchise in which Alison stars as Queenie Goldstein - had been indefinitely suspended, the tour with Goldfrapp postponed, and for some reason she couldn't taste or smell anything. The mood in London was strange, tense. No one knew how long this thing would last, and the risk for pregnant women. There, without any wifi, set with the changing seasons and the quiet solitude of their borrowed cottage as the backdrop, the first songs of her intimate and introspective yet powerful, poetic record came quickly and quietly. London went into lockdown. Days later, they lost the baby. When Alison began writing Still Come the Night, she knew that she wanted to make an album to process the different stages of grief that she and her partner experienced with the loss of their first baby in pregnancy. This new album spans the emotions of Alison's journey, from the exhilaration of early love into the tightrope walk of excitement and uncertainty of pregnancy and ultimately through the complex and mysterious landscape of grief. Now based in London, Alison Sudol is an American singer-songwriter, musician, actress and video director. Having released three critically acclaimed albums under the name A Fine Frenzy during which she toured with Rufus Wainwright and opened for The Stooges at SXSW. Making her comeback to music as Alison Sudol in 2018 she released two EPs, Moon and its follow-up, Moonlite both co-produced with Yard Act and Gruff Rhys' producer Ali Chant, and featuring Portishead's Clive Deamer and Adrian Utley and John Parish. Her acting credits include the Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them franchise and the critically acclaimed TV series Transparent and Dig. We want to hear from you!
