The speaker begins by highlighting the critical importance of personal discipleship, noting a concerning lack of personal mentoring among church leaders. Reflecting on a seminary lesson, three key insights emerge: the internal transformation is more crucial than external events, our character outweighs our actions, and we cannot give what we do not possess. These principles set the stage for a broader conversation on the state of discipleship and its cultivation within church communities. Critiquing prevalent church practices, the speaker contrasts the self-contained "frog" with the outward-reaching "lizard," lamenting the church's focus on internal programs rather than proactive disciple-making efforts. Central to this critique is the assertion that the type of gospel preached shapes the disciples produced. Misrepresentations of the gospel, such as the "forgiveness-only" or "prosperity" versions, result in incomplete discipleship outcomes. Instead, advocating for a holistic "discipleship gospel" is crucial, centered on following Jesus as the model for life. The speaker portrays Jesus as a revolutionary, initiating transformation from individual hearts to cultural shifts within society through authentic discipleship. Redefining grace as an active catalyst for growth rather than a passive concept becomes integral to this mission. Personal narratives reveal the speaker's own journey, including struggles with pastoral responsibilities and personal trauma, which underscore the critical need for genuine discipleship within the church. Aligning current practices with biblical ideals prompts a renewed focus on fostering discipleship as core to church identity. Practical examples like the "with God life" illustrate the transformative journey of discipleship, urging listeners to reconsider love as an ongoing sacrificial pursuit of God's best for others. The episode culminates with a poignant story emphasizing love as the foundational principle guiding life and mission, echoing Jesus's radical call to transformative love. Overall, "Bonheoffer 4" challenges us to evaluate our personal discipleship journey, the authenticity of the gospel we proclaim, and the transformative power of love in our lives and communities. The traditional answer, centered on performance and duty, is not resonating with men today, leading many men to feel confused and disconnected from their faith. Let's let Tim share some insights with us on how we can begin to foster biblical understanding and spiritual growth in our churches. The episode focuses on the question 'What is a biblical man?' and discusses the inadequacies of traditional performance-based definitions. With statistics showing that men are disengaging from church activities and leadership, the speaker introduces three truths to redefine biblical manhood: understanding one's identity as a child of God, living life through Jesus, and viewing life from God's perspective. The speaker mentions a new model called 'The Man Journey' and emphasizes the need for identity and spiritual growth over performance. Discussions include the importance of scripture immersion, role modeling, group dynamics, and accountability. The session also highlights effective biblical study tools, discipleship, and the significance of transparent leadership to foster true spiritual growth. Highlight – “Do you know what a disciple is?” In part two of our insightful conversation with Jim Putman, we delve deep into defining discipleship as per biblical context. Using Matthew 4:19 as a basis, Putman discusses how we must understand and apply Jesus' invitation effectively to cultivate a deeper relationship with disciples. He emphasizes realizing shared understanding, a shared process, and shared methodology to facilitate unified discipleship. By using Christ's transformed New Testament definition of the church, Putman helps readers redefine words like 'disciple' and 'church' in the original biblical sense. Drawing parallels with sports teams and their teamwork, he underlines the importance of understanding terms and expressions in alignment with culture and scripture to avoid communication deficits. By Paul Moody in Kennewick, WA, Kettle Falls, WA, Spokane, WA - November 4, 2023 - Discipleship includes not only learning what the instructor is teaching but following that instructor in all they do. As Christ's disciples, we should be striving to emulate everything He did as we live this life. When people look at us, they should see a representative of Christ, ultimately seeing Christ in us. There will be challenges, but the rewards far outweigh any cost we may have to pay.
In themselves, emotions are neither good nor bad but this doesn't mean they are insignificant. Paying attention to our emotions can show us the condition of our heart and is the start of becoming emotionally healthy disciples.
Jesus teaching discipleship.
We live in a time where it's become too easy to simply go to church without having a conviction to BE the Church. The U.S. Christian Church has tried to hard to compete with culture rather than impacting culture. Whether it's trying too hard to be entertaining, or bending our theology to be more inclusive - the cost of discipleship has virtually been forgotten.Where are we headed? Who are we becoming? What should we be doing? What does it mean to be a disciple of Jesus?
