Star Trek commits its worst possible sin - being boring - as we review "Vortex". While we are happy to see an old guest star friend, it won't be long before we are talking about what is in our junk drawers. One thing though....is the Federation ever going to pass a law on menacing or are threats just a love language?
The Terminus Systems Arc begins it's climax as the NX-01 rolls in for "The Council". As Archer puts on his best Diplomacy Face, he tries to convince the the Xindi that maybe religiously motivated genocide is bad. Meanwhile, T'Pol leads a MACO to the most redshirt-y death of all time and Degra makes the mistake of resolving his backstory.
Enterprise moves into full 'war is hell' mode as we review "The Forgotten". The crew of the NX-01 digs deep on the heavy questions - death, grief, perseverance - as Trip finds himself in choking distance of Space Oppenheimer. Also, will Reed finally achieve his fondest wish of dying on the ship's hull?
Strap yourselves in, as a whole new show starts as we arrive at "Azati Prime"! This one truly has everything - Time Zucc, relationship drama, murders, Trek lady weak zone exploitation, and all the traumatic brain injury you can handle (also lots of compelling drama and action good grief this was good)!
The crew of the NX-01 bust out all their drama kid skills as we review "Stratagem"! After capturing a very stupid Degra and friends, Archer goes full LARP Goblin with a side of memory chloroform to get some answers.
PJ, Mat and Eliot find themselves in a strange shuttlecraft with Archer and the Xindi commander, Degra. Who are pals now, and have recently escaped from prison. Did we miss some episodes? First Time Star Trek: Enterprise Viewer: Season 3. Most Star Trek fans have watched the episodes multiple times, and after more than fifty years of broadcasting, we are surprised when we meet someone that hasn't watched some of the episodes, or even hasn't watched any episodes in a series at all. Kerry Purvis has been a Star Trek fan since she was a small child, but somehow she passed over Enterprise during its first run, and has only recently begun her first watch of the show. In this episode of Warp Five, hosts Brandon-Shea Mutala and Patrick Devlin are joined by Kerry Purvis to talk about her experience watching season three of Enterprise for the first time. We discuss Kerry's initial first impressions, favorite moments, Degra's arc, stand out episodes, and her favorite character moments. Oppenheimer, Degra, and Jetrel. Star Trek has always been a looking glass through which we see ourselves, a way of examining our world, who we are, and where we came from. Trek.fm is proud to introduce our newest show, Primitive Culture. In each episode, hosts Duncan Barrett and Tony Black tie history and culture to Star Trekand discuss how our own world inspires the franchise we love—and how that franchise inspires us. In the pilot episode, “Destroyers of Worlds,” Tony and Duncan look at the relationship between J. Robert Oppenheimer, father of the atomic bomb, and two of Star Trek’s complex figures: Jetrel and Degra. This time on Trek Trek, Justin and Randy talk about Star Trek: Enterprise season three, episodes 21 and 22, “E2” and “The Council”. Spoilers: Future/past Enterprise helps current day Enterprise through the vortex; Degra is murdered.
For better or worse, Degra was first and foremost a Patriot. In continuing Degra’s character exploration from Warp Five Episode 42, it is apparent that his character arc has even more complexity still left to explore. The Season 3 Xindi arc from September 2003 to May 2004 emulated the U.S. national zeitgeist, post-911, with issues of torture, weapons of mass destruction, and moral compromise at the heart. But without Degra's redemption and the overall resolution of the conflict which hinged upon reconciliation, the story would have been significantly darker and fundamentally not in the best traditions of Star Trek. Conceptually, the initial inspiration for the character of Degra was J. Robert Oppenheimer, one of the fathers of the atomic bomb. Brannon Braga explained in Star Trek Magazine #117, p. 62, "We knew we wanted to create an Oppenheimer-like character who was the mastermind behind building the bomb, who was very committed to his species but wracked with guilt, just like Oppenheimer." So please join us for a deeply philosophical discussion about Degra and how he faced his own morality which ultimately led to his redemption. Degra. Throughout Enterprise's third season we see the Xindi Council debate their plans to destroy Earth. Each species has its say, but the central focus is on Degra, father of the Xindi superweapon. Modeled after J. Robert Oppenheimer, father of the atomic bomb, Degra is the Xindi with whom we can most easily identify because he represents the primate lineage of evolution on Xindus. He also mirrors Archer in many ways, and turns out to be the linchpin in the NX-01's mission to save Earth and the Star Trek future. In this episode of Warp Five we're joined by Tommy Kraft to discuss Degra, how his actions echo those of scientists on our own world, how his immense regret over the damage caused by his creation drives him to help Archer, and how he pays the ultimate price to make sure he saves both his own people and those he originally set out to destroy.
