If you have heard of Munchausen Syndrome before, it's far more likely you've seen it represented in popular culture than in real life. Like a lot of psychological syndromes, it's used as a dramatic device in many films and series, like Sharp Objects or The Politician to name just a couple.  The most recent example is The Act, which was created by Nick Antosca and Michelle Dean, and first appeared on Hulu in 2019. The series was inspired by a real-life case in the United States, and tells the story of a mother who convinces her daughter and the world that she suffers from leukemia, muscular dystrophy, and other disorders. But bringing the "spicy" subject matter of Rachel Reid's book series to tv audiences would be no small feat. It required the editors to find the right balance of tension, chemistry and character within and around the steamy sexual encounters of the shows main characters. Heated Rivalry follows the lives of two budding hockey superstars, Canadian Shane Hollander and Russian Ilya Rozanov.  Before becoming pro hockey players, the two meet as competitors at an international hockey competition.  Six months later they would be drafted by two rival teams, the Montreal Metros and the Boston Raiders.  Although their on-ice rivalry is amplified by media coverage and public perception, the two develop a private, initially casual sexual relationship that continues intermittently over several years as they pursue their hockey careers.  Keeping this relationship hidden from the world is a challenge greater than either would ever have on the ice. If you have heard of Munchausen Syndrome before, it's far more likely you've seen it represented in popular culture than in real life. Like a lot of psychological syndromes, it's used as a dramatic device in many films and series, like Sharp Objects or The Politician to name just a couple.  The most recent example is The Act, which was created by Nick Antosca and Michelle Dean, and first appeared on Hulu in 2019. The series was inspired by a real-life case in the United States, and tells the story of a mother who convinces her daughter and the world that she suffers from leukemia, muscular dystrophy, and other disorders. Today, Asif gets Ali's thoughts on controversial comedian Shane Gillis (2:22). They discuss his background and his early start in comedy. They discuss his controversial exchange from his podcast that got him unhired from Saturday Night Live in 2019. Ali then gives his thoughts on Gillis' hit special ‘Beautiful Dogs'. They then discuss their thoughts on his new Netflix show ‘Tires' as well as their opinions on his standup in general.    Then, based on the TV show ‘Sharp Objects' as well as the news making Gypsy-Rose Blanchard, Ali asks Asif about Munchausen Syndrome aka factitious disorder imposed on self (26:31). Asif goes over the definition of the syndrome as well as why it was named after Munchausen. Asif then makes it clear how to differentiate it from conversion (functional) disorders as well as malingering (feigning symptoms for financial gain). Ali then asks Asif about what clues doctors into making this diagnosis. Asif then gives some examples of how people feign various illnesses. Asif then discusses what may be going on psychologically in patients with factitious disorder imposed on self.    Ali asks Asif about Munchausen by proxy, which is now called factitious disorder imposed on another. Amanda is doing her best to be supportive while Kyle goes through his rehab program, but she still feels guilty about pushing him to do things she doesn't think he ever wanted to do, while he feels ashamed to have fallen short of his own standards. She definitely needs a friend to lean on, and since she and Eve are still fighting about Amanda having fired Sharp Objects, Amanda seeks support from Peter, fueling rumors: Lexi tells Ryan about seeing Amanda and Peter getting a hotel room key after the foundation fundraiser, Eve remembers how Amanda clung to Peter after he got Ricky G away from her, and the one and only other patient Kyle's talked to in his program is perfectly cheerful about his own wife cheating on him while he's away, leading Kyle to jump to wild conclusions. Lexi and Ryan aren't ONLY talking about Kyle: when they simultaneously land on a great slogan for the Passion Island campaign, they throw themselves a drinking contest to decide which of them will get to present it -- a contest that has consequences that were only unintended to one of them. And while Michael continues carrying out his extortion plan against the hospital, Audrey continues to be an unpredictable force. The good news is that after seeing his worst qualities reflected in his awful father, Kyle has realized that he does, finally, have to tell Amanda what's driven him to drink and pills. The bad news is that he does so immediately after setting the dream house frame on fire and driving off to parts unknown. Amid and around waiting for him to return, Amanda decides to send Ryan to Mexico for a resort client pitch meeting, and Lexi decides to send herself as soon as she knows he's going. Amanda also manages Sharp Objects out of the rock and roll club in Kyle's absence, pissing off Eve, who thinks Amanda's doing it on Peter's orders to sabotage Eve's career. (Peter also finds time to comfort Amanda...maybe a little too well?) Elsewhere, we find out what exactly Michael has been doing with Nurse Audrey, and whether he found the right partner for a scheme based on sexual intrigue. Take her 2012 novel Gone Girl, for example, which she later adapted into a smash hit movie with David Fincher. That murder-mystery tale of a marriage steeped in deceit captivated the world and sparked near-endless conversation about the poison and/or empowerment of its main character, Amy Dunne. That novel and movie – released within two years of each other – didn't just make Flynn a literary darling. It also catapulted her to the summit of film and TV. In 2018, she co-wrote the brilliant Widows with Steve McQueen, and adapted her first novel, Sharp Objects, into a gloriously slow-burning limited series starring Amy Adams. Since then, she's won cult acclaim for her streaming adaptation of Utopia, the British Channel 4 series. In the conversation you're about to hear, we ask Gillian how she pens her captivating characters and the social importance of allowing women to run riot on-screen and in her novels, the way that male anti-heroes are frequently permitted to do.
