We are replaying one of the most popular shows for you this week! * * * Today, we’re talking about Jon McMahon’s docuseries and his journey to conquer obesity and reverse diabetes. Imagine being over 357 pounds with triglycerides topping out at 2170 and making the decision to turn it all around. That is exactly what Jon did. We couldn’t wait to share his personal story and applaud his bravery in sharing his journey with the world in hopes of inspiring others to do the same. * * * About Jon At 312 pounds with advanced type 2 diabetes and all of its complications, Jon’s future looked bleak and he knew it. The question that remained for him was this: “Do I want to live?” His answer was yes. And in 2017, Jon embarked out on a quest to get to the heart of the problem underlying the epidemic of diabetes and how people are successfully reversing it without medication. The result was a nine-part documentary series, iThrive: Rising from The Depths of Diabetes and Obesity. The series has inspired hundreds of thousands of people to transform their lives and has given Jon his life’s mission of helping others rise from the death, from the depths, and reclaim their health. * * * How Bad is the Diabetes Problem? In a paper written by Dr. David Matthews, in 2010, he says, “What is coming is the black plague.” Neil Barnard, from the Physicians Committee on Responsible Medicine, says, “It’s going to be worse than the black plague. Millions and millions and millions of people are going to suffer long, and then they’re going to die in a lot of pain.” Google search results “Diabetes in Mexico” - “Diabetes in Mexico, an epidemic and the number-one killer.” “Diabetes in China,” China’s the most populous country with the most diabetics in the world, 109 million, and that’s not even pre-diabetes. “Diabetes in India,” oh, India and China are in competition for the “Diabetes capitol of the world.” “Diabetes in America,” over 100 million people in America with diabetes. Pre-diabetes - 86 million in the United States with pre-diabetes. 90 percent of them, says the Centers for Disease Control, don’t even know it. Wes Youngberg said even the standards for measuring pre-diabetes are too lax. Just between three countries, 300-400 million people. And that’s not counting all the ones with pre-diabetes, another 200-300 million people. Myths Around Type-2 Diabetes You have to be fat. Obesity is highly correlated with it. Wes Youngberg says, “If you think you’re skinny and you’re off the hook, think again.” 20 or 30 percent of those with diabetes are in their healthy BMI range. You have to be old, in your 40s or 50s to get diabetes. Young people are getting diabetes now in college, in their teens, now in high school. Epigenetics - gene expression can be turned on by your environment and what you do. If you take one parent that is obese, one parent out of two that’s obese, their child is four times more likely to be obese. If both parents are obese, this obesity risk factor increases the child’s risk factor for diabetes, not by 1 ½ times, or 1 ¾ or 2 times, by 30 times. If both parents are obese during the conception, the birth, and the raising of the child, the child is 15 times the likelihood to be obese. Jon’s Mission Wake people up. When they’re awake, inspire them. If people ever wanted to change the world, it would be by changing ourselves from the inside out. We Are All Individuals We have individualized needs, and our genes are different. In large ways, we’re similar, but in small ways, we have a lot of variance. Jon’s Journey A friend said to Jon, “Jon, I’m not going to bug you anymore. I’m not going to ask you what you ate. I’m not going to ask you how you’re doing, what your weight is, how you’re—if you’re following—you’re reaching your goals, or whatever. Because I care more about you than you care about yourself. Jon, you’ve got to decide whether you want to live.” Jon was intentional about his decision. “I want to live.” Educated himself on type 2 diabetes and obesity. Andi Battaglia entered the house and carefully covered her nose and mouth with her handkerchief before proceeding. Cops say once you smell the odor, you know it instantly, an observation that doesn't make the effect any easier to handle. June in Florida with the air conditioning off had turned the house into a vile-smelling sauna. Andi greeted the man and woman who stood near the patrolman, ready to transport the body either to the local mortuary or to the Medical Examiner in Fort Pierce if there was to be an autopsy. Andi hadn't been called, but she'd been in the area when she heard the report on her car radio. If it was a homicide, it would be her first in her new job as a detective, and she'd notified the station that she was going to the scene. No one would argue -- certainly not the other detectives who didn't want any more work than they already had. Holding her handkerchief tightly over her nose and breathing through her mouth, Andi entered the bedroom... The man's eyes were open, his eyelids drooped half-shut... -- A Reason to Kill, Carole Sojka I have the great pleasure this time of interviewing one of the most lovely and interesting of writers: Carole Sojka. Carole has lived a lifetime of adventures, notably with her husband as one of the first thousand Peace Corps volunteers, and traveling all over the world. She worked, traveled, raised a family, and in retirement, turned her hand to writing. And so a new adventure began. Carole has two books to date and a third on the way in her Andi Battaglia police series, set in Florida. The first, A Reason to Kill, introduces Andi as she tries to break away from her past and start fresh. But of course the past always has a way of sneaking up on you. In her second book, So Many Reasons to Die, it's Andi's partner Greg who finds that the past is hard to lay to rest. Especially when she winds up murdered on your turf. Carole's third book is a stand-alone, Psychic Damage, about a woman who is addicted to visiting psychics -- right up to the moment one of them is murdered. Oh, and if you're looking for more information about the fascinating House of Refuge which features in A Reason to Kill, you can check it out here. Carole gives a shout-out to author Doug Lyle, who I've had the pleasure of hearing lecture. A terrific writer and a generous spirit, you can learn more about him at his website. If you are a mystery writer, I can't recommend his book, Forensics, highly enough. Carole also mentions one of her favorite writers, Julia Spencer Flemming, whose work inspired Carole to get her detectives out of Florida and into the snow in their next adventure. And finally, Carole gives a shout out to her friend and editor, Candy Somoza. You can see Candy read from her own work here. Meanwhile, keep tabs on Carole, see her fabulous pics from Somalia, and check out excerpts from her books via her website: http://carolesojka.com/ As usual, if you'd rather read than listen, the transcript is below. Enjoy! -- Laura *************************************************************************************** Transcript of Interview with Carole Sojka Laura Brennan: My guest, Carole Sojka, writes mysteries -- and lives adventures. She and her husband were among the first thousand Peace Corps volunteers and they have traveled to every continent except Antarctica. Her mysteries capture that sense of adventure and romance -- although of course the bodies do tend to pile up. Carole, thank you for joining me. Carole Sojka: Thank you for having me. LB: You have led a very exciting life. CS: It doesn't seem like that in retrospect, but I guess it was, or it has been. LB: Did it seem like that at the time? When you took off for Africa and the Peace Corps, did it seem like this is the most exciting thing I'll ever do? CS: Yes, it did. I remember that no matter what was going on during our Peace Corps time,
Suspense Magazine was started by us in 2007. We thought there was a need to have a platform where all authors could showcase their work. It's tough enough to write, but selling your books is like climbing Mt. Everest without oxygen. We started Suspense Radio a couple of years later and in 2014 we expanded the radio network to include four shows. Crime and Science Radio hosted by Doug Lyle and Jan Burke, www.crimeandscienceradio.com. Next bestselling author Steven James hosts The Story Blender where he talks great storytelling by great storytellers, www.thestoryblender.com. Inside Edition is where it all started, where you will hear author interviews and more. Then Beyond The Cover is hosted by master reviewer and author Jeff Ayers and John Raab. Here we cover everything within the genre, not just books, but movies, plays and more. We have created a place where everyone can enjoy the news and creativity within the genre of mystery, suspense, thriller and horror. You can email editor@suspensemagazine.com for more information on the magazine and to email anybody on the radio, email radio@suspensemagazine.com. Our mailing address is: 26500 Agoura Rd #102-474 Calabasas, CA 91302
SHOW TITLE: Meet Iris, the FBI’s Only Electronic-sniffing Dog: An Interview with Jeffrey Calandra BLURB: Criminals and terrorists often hide data on electronic devices and then hide these devices. And they re often very clever about doing so. In such search situations, many subjects hide flash drives, hard drives, and other electronic components so if the police come, the instruments of their crimes may not be found. Take the example of a child ography case where a subject will put pictures of innocent children on a thumb drive and hide it in the yard, behind walls, and all sorts of other places. In a normal search, a human investigator may not find the media. What’s the FBI to do? Enter Iris, a young, eager, lab who is the FBI’s only canine capable of sniffing out these devices. And she’s one of only five in the world. How does she do it? How was she trained for such specialized work? In this episode we talk with Jeffrey Chandra and he can tell us how all this accomplished, as well as how dogs are used in other criminal detection activities. BIO: Jeffrey Calandra possesses a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science and a Masters in Criminal Justice with concentration in Computer Forensics. He spent 6-1/2 years as a special agent working child ography, criminal computer intrusions, fraud, and bomb threat cases. HE has also assisted on Counter Intelligence, Counter-Terrorism, Drug, and Gang cases and has served as a member of the Hostage Negotiator team. He is currently a K9 handler for the FBI Electronic Scent Detection K9 Iris. Iris, a 20 month-old black lab, is the first of her type in the FBI and one of 5 in the world. She will be the future of law enforcement. Already we are getting requests from across the country for her assistance. For a little background, Iris was trained as a seeing eye dog for a year and then was selected to be a law enforcement dog.
