Murder Club reconvenes to discuss the 2017 doc: Casey Anthony: An American Murder Mystery with Ace and Katelyn.TRIGGER WARNING: This documentary, therefore our discussion, contains talk of child murder, physical abuse, sexual abuse, sexual assault, and rape. A three-night expose into the 2008 murder of toddler Caylee Anthony, one of the most captivating and controversial cases in recent history, sheds new light on the crime and unexpected verdict. Investigative journalists definitively look at every angle of the case and whirlwind prosecution of Caylee's 22-year-old mother, Casey, who was charged with murdering her daughter and was tried in both the court of law and, ultimately, the court of public opinion. The series features exclusive interviews with Caylee's grandparents, Cindy and George Anthony, offering a unique look into the inner-working of the Anthony family; also featured are Clint House, a former close friend and confidant of Casey's; Belvin Perry Jr., the judge in Casey's trial; Kevin Beary, the former Orange County Sheriff who first investigated the case; and Jane Velez-Mitchell and Diane Dimond, both crime reporters and TV journalists who covered the trial.Support the show:To get ad-free episodes and bonus content including 90 Day: The Single Life, cult docs, and Gen X content, please sign up at:https://www.patreon.com/littlemissrecaphttps://littlemissrecap.supercast.com/Give the gift of Little Miss Recap EXTRA: https://littlemissrecap.supercast.com/gifts/newTHE SHOW:Get in touch with us:Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/groups/littlemissrecapFacebook group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/littlemissrecapInstagram: @littlemissrecap Voicemail: www.littlemissrecap.comEmail: Info@littlemissrecap.com Hosted on Acast. James Patterson has written bestsellers in many genres. But as he tells the ABA Journal's Lee Rawles in this episode of The Modern Law Library, he has always been fascinated by legal thrillers, courtroom dramas and crime novels. He even considered becoming a lawyer, before his literary career took off. In his newest release, The #1 Lawyer, James Patterson partnered with co-author Nancy Allen to tell the story of Stafford Lee Penney, a criminal defense attorney in Biloxi, Mississippi, who's never lost a case. But after handing a high-profile murder trial involving the son of a mobster, Penney finds himself on the other side of the bench as a defendant himself, charged with murdering his own wife. Patterson has written and co-written more than 300 books, including bestselling series like Alex Cross, Women's Murder Club and Maximum Ride. He had some writing tips for attorneys, particularly on how to work collaboratively. As Patterson tells listeners in the podcast, he is open about working with other writers on many of his books, and he finds tools like outlining absolutely essential. He also shares with Rawles how he thinks co-writers should handle interpersonal communication while working together. Patterson says one of the major benefits of working with co-authors is pulling from their experiences to make his books more accurate and true to life. When he wrote The President is Missing with Bill Clinton, the former president could tell Patterson the inside details of how a Secret Service detail worked. When he wrote Run, Rose, Run with Dolly Parton, she walked him through the production cycle for a song. Allen, who conducted more than 30 jury trials as a prosecutor in Missouri and taught law for 15 years at Missouri State University, contributed her firsthand courtroom experience to The #1 Lawyer. Patterson says they worked to make everything as accurate as possible—while still allowing for a good story. It's the pair's second book together, following a previous standalone novel, Juror #3. In this episode of The Modern Law Library, Patterson shares some of his favorite law-related pop culture picks; news about new and ongoing projects; and describes a very special birthday event with Dolly Parton. He also discusses how his children's series Maximum Ride got caught up in Florida book bans in 2023. For fans of Patterson's breakout success, the Alex Cross series launched in 1993 with Along Came a Spider, the author shares updates about what's next for the intrepid detective—including details about the upcoming Amazon Prime TV series Cross, starring Aldis Hodge.

In a striking turn of events surrounding the notorious Gilgo Beach murder case, Asa Ellerup, wife of the accused Rex Heuermann, has become the subject of a million-dollar documentary deal with the Peacock Network. The documentary, produced by 50 Cent and G Unit Productions, delves into Ellerup's life as she navigates the complexities of being married to a man charged with being a serial killer. Tony Brueski, host of "Hidden Killers," discussed these developments with Robin Dreeke, a retired FBI special agent, uncovering layers of this unusual and ethically challenging situation.    Ellerup's involvement in the documentary has raised eyebrows and moral questions, with many criticizing the move as capitalizing on a tragedy. However, from Ellerup's perspective, as Dreeke pointed out, this venture might be seen as an unavoidable new role in her life, similar to the daughter of the Happy Face Killer, who also found herself in the spotlight due to her father's infamy.    The conditions of the documentary stipulate that Ellerup has no creative control and that the proceeds cannot be used for Heuermann's defense, a clause meant to maintain ethical boundaries. Despite this, the involvement of a high-profile production company and the nature of the documentary have drawn criticism for potentially exploiting the victims' trauma for entertainment.    The optics of the documentary are particularly challenging. John Ray, representing the family of victim Shannan Gilbert, has expressed deep disappointment, deeming the project "reckless beyond belief." This sentiment echoes the larger concern about the impact of such projects on the victims' families, who continue to seek justice and closure.    Further complicating the matter is the involvement of Ellerup's children, one of whom has special needs. The decision to bring a film crew into their lives during such a tumultuous period raises questions about the potential impact on their well-being and mental health.    Dreeke suggested that the documentary could potentially shed light on Ellerup's innocence or lack of involvement in her husband's alleged crimes. If done well, it might even garner public sympathy for her and her children. However, there is a risk that the documentary could turn into a spectacle, undermining its credibility and further harming the victims' families.    The documentary also presents an opportunity for investigators. With Ellerup not being questioned by the police yet, the documentary might reveal more than intended, providing new insights or leads in the investigation.    As the project progresses, the public watches with a mix of anticipation and apprehension. The documentary could either be a platform for Ellerup to reclaim her narrative or a catalyst for more controversy and scrutiny. The ethical considerations surrounding the production, especially its timing and the potential impact on the victims' families, remain at the forefront of this unfolding story.    The case of Rex Heuermann and Asa Ellerup continues to evolve, marked by complex dynamics and a web of moral and legal questions. As this documentary moves forward, it prompts a critical reflection on the intersection of crime, media, and ethics in our society. How will Ellerup's story unfold, and what consequences will it bring for all those involved? Only time will tell. Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE?
