Type 2 diabetes affects more than 422 million people worldwide, yet many don't realize that it can be reversed with the right approach. This figure comes from the World Health Organization (WHO) and unfortunately, continues to increase. Lewis Bertus, PA-C, is on a mission to change that. As the founder of Diabetes180, Lewis has helped countless individuals transform their health using a low-fat, whole-food, plant-based approach. Featured on the NHA Health Science Podcast with Dr. Frank Sabatino, Lewis shares his groundbreaking methods and personal journey, which combines professional expertise with deeply rooted values. A Holistic Start: From Theology to Medicine Lewis's foundation in holistic health began early, growing up in the Seventh-day Adventist faith, which emphasizes the connection between physical and spiritual well-being. His undergraduate studies in theology further shaped his belief in holistic healing, and his early career in community outreach gave him firsthand experience addressing preventable health challenges. “I grew up understanding that if you nourish the body correctly, it can heal itself,” Lewis said, crediting his upbringing for introducing him to plant-based principles long before they were mainstream. Personal Experience Sparks Professional Mission The inspiration behind Diabetes180 came from a personal challenge—helping his wife reverse her diabetes. Despite following conventional dietary advice and even experimenting with a keto diet, her condition persisted. Frustrated but determined, Lewis dove deep into research and implemented a low-fat, whole-food, plant-based diet. “Within six weeks, her blood sugar normalized,” Lewis shared. “Her success became the catalyst for what is now the Diabetes180 program.” Breaking Down Diabetes: Addressing the Root Cause Contrary to popular belief, Lewis explained, type 2 diabetes isn't caused by carbohydrates. Instead, he highlighted how excess dietary fat creates insulin resistance. Excess dietary fat creates a barrier that prevents insulin from effectively delivering glucose into the cells. By focusing on a low-fat, whole-food, plant-based diet, clients in the Diabetes180 program can significantly enhance their insulin sensitivity and take meaningful steps toward reversing diabetes. The Diabetes180 Program: A Path to Transformation Lewis's three-month program offers a comprehensive approach to reversing diabetes, focusing on: Dietary Transition: Guidance on adopting a low-fat, plant-based diet. Mindset Coaching: Practical tools for managing stress and fostering a positive outlook. Exercise Recommendations: Customized plans incorporating both aerobic and resistance training. Lewis's wife, a former diabetic, co-leads the program, bringing personal insight and emotional support to clients navigating similar journeys. Tackling Sugar Cravings and Integrating Fasting Addressing sugar cravings effectively requires a complete dietary reset, as gradual changes often prove less successful. The program also incorporates intermittent fasting as a powerful strategy for clients with persistent insulin resistance. By synchronizing eating patterns with natural circadian rhythms, fasting promotes faster recovery and supports improved metabolic health. Bridging the Gap Between Patients and Physicians One of the biggest challenges Lewis faces is overcoming the widespread misconception that carbohydrates cause diabetes. By educating clients—and sometimes their physicians—on the science of insulin resistance, Lewis helps pave the way for sustainable health improvements. Lewis ensures that clients understand his role as a supportive coach and resource, complementing the care provided by their primary healthcare team rather than replacing it. This collaborative approach empowers clients to make lifestyle changes while maintaining the guidance of their existing medical professionals. Ready to Reverse Diabetes? What if instead of managing diabetes with drugs, we focused on reversing it? In this episode of The Dr. Hyman Show, I sit down with Sami Inkinen, CEO and co-founder of Virta Health, and Dr. Greeshma Shetty, a board-certified endocrinologist, to discuss an approach that's transforming how we treat metabolic disease. They share groundbreaking research and real-world results that prove type 2 diabetes isn't a lifelong sentence—it can be reversed with the right nutritional and care model. In this conversation, you'll learn: Why mainstream medicine still treats type 2 diabetes as a progressive disease—even though science shows it's reversible. How Virta Health is using a combination of nutritional therapy and continuous remote care to achieve Ozempic-level results, without the drugs. The critical role of personalized dietary interventions in reversing metabolic dysfunction. How a high-touch, tech-driven approach to patient care is leading to long-term success. The real cost of diabetes—not just for individuals, but for the entire healthcare system—and why prevention and reversal should be the priority. Did you know nearly half a billion people worldwide are grappling with type 2 diabetes? It's a staggering statistic, revealing a global health crisis. But here's the good news: It doesn't have to be a life sentence! Our guest today, Lewis Bertus, a passionate Physician Assistant with a personal connection to diabetes, has dedicated himself to transforming lives through a holistic, plant-focused approach. Inspired by the impact he's seen in both his patients and his wife, he founded Diabetes 180 to show that reclaiming health is truly possible. In this episode, we explore his evidence-backed strategies, the power of dietary shifts, and his mission to spread a plant-based message of hope and change. For anyone facing diabetes or supporting someone who is, this conversation is one you won't want to miss! “Type 2 diabetes, I should say, is a disease where your body is no longer sensitive to its own insulin. So your pancreas is now in overdrive, overproducing insulin. And this is why the disease gets worse because the pancreas gets stressed. Type 1 diabetics is different, but they can also suffer from insulin resistance. With a Type 1 diabetic, their pancreas is no longer producing a sufficient amount of insulin. But, even the insulin they inject can get to the point where your body is rejecting it. The lifestyle and the diet is basically promoting resistance to the insulin. So when you go on the right lifestyle – low fat, whole food plant-based, intermittent fasting, exercising is a good thing. I encourage people to build their lean muscle. See it as cabinet storage for sugar. So it takes less insulin to do its job, whether you're injecting it as a Type 1 diabetic or your body is producing it. And that's what really leads you to reverse the disease because guess what? Now you could eat carbs, a bowl of fruit for breakfast, and your body just responds like it normally should.” - Lewis Bertus Pa-C What we discuss in this episode: - How Lewis's wife transformed her health through a plant-based diet. - Understanding diabetes, fat intake, and insulin resistance. - Strategies for coping with sugar cravings. - Benefits of intermittent fasting for patients, including how it works and supports health. - Inspiring success stories from Lewis's patients. - Lewis's recommendations for starting a plant-based diet. Today, I'm fortunate to welcome Dr. Jason Fung for the fifth time. Jason Fung, MD, was born in 1973 and trained in Los Angeles and Toronto as a kidney specialist. He founded The Fasting Method (TheFastingMethod.com) to provide evidence-based advice for weight loss and managing blood sugars, focusing on low carbohydrate diets and intermittent fasting. In this episode, Dr. Jason Fung emphasizes that fasting should not be followed by binge eating, as it negates the benefits of the fast. The purpose of fasting is to allow the body to use its stored calories, such as glucose and fat, which is beneficial for weight loss and managing type 2 diabetes. If one consumes excessive calories after fasting, the body will store these extra calories as fat, thereby hindering progress. Tune in as Dr. Fung explains certain foods stimulate GLP-1, a hormone that helps regulate appetite. Protein-rich foods make you feel full quickly, while bitter foods like arugula, dandelion greens, ginger, and spices such as turmeric, fenugreek, and cinnamon can suppress appetite. However, while pharmaceutical interventions targeting GLP-1 can be powerful, they are not always ideal due to potential side effects, such as nausea and loss of enjoyment in food. With so many people jumping on the “compassion” bandwagon, Dr. Nandita Shah, founder of SHARAN (Sanctuary for Health and Reconnection to Animals and Nature), is an inspiration in the realms of holistic health and compassionate living. With over 40 years of medical practice, Dr. Shah's transformative journey from a busy Mumbai practice to the tranquil community of Auroville has profoundly shaped her approach to health. Her commitment extends beyond personal well-being to advocating for a cultural shift towards wellness, reconnection with nature, and compassionate living. During this episode of the NHA Health Science Podcast, Dr. Shah shares her journey from decades ago to now and what she is committed to in the future for the animals, the environment and health. Early Years and Transition to Veganism Born and raised in India, Dr. Shah initially embraced a vegetarian lifestyle. However, the belief in the necessity of milk for protein led her to consume three glasses of milk daily, along with yogurt and other dairy products. A realization of the ethical and health implications of dairy consumption prompted a swift transition to veganism. This marked not only a change in dietary choices but a resolute commitment to a lifestyle in harmony with nature and animals. Full post at: www.HealthScience.org/060-Nandita-Shah

In 1992, Dr. Wortman developed type 2 diabetes and quickly discovered that it could be controlled by restricting dietary carbohydrates. He went on to do clinical research on low-carbohydrate diets and became a little bit famous for a study he did in the Namgis First Nation of Alert Bay which was the subject of the CBC documentary film, "My Big Fat Diet". His research interest in the dietary management of obesity, pre-diabetes and diabetes led him back into clinical practice where he prescribes therapeutic diet changes for a range of physical and mental pathologies. We found a diamond in the rough world of Diabetes! Today's guest is Dr. Mariela Glandt an Endocrinologist and founder and CEO of OwnaHealth, an online consulting company aimed at reversing diabetes and helping patients ditch their drugs, especially the dreaded Insulin. After being approached by a best friend who confronted her on how “the medical system” seemed to be backwards in its dietary approach to managing Diabetes, Dr. Glandt reconsidered what she learned in Medical classes. After some hesitation, she became forward thinking enough to start using the principles of basic physiology and stop the perpetual cycle of using drugs over food and lifestyle modifications. Go figure! (and if you haven't seen the South Park episode about flipping the food pyramid, don't laugh but they actually were on to something!) As we perpetually see a continued rise in the obesity epidemic and the increasingly dangerous effects of Type 2 Diabetes and its complications, Dr. Glandt is helping her patients achieve MAJOR health changes, ditch their medications and achieve their amazing results with diet modifications- specifically LOW CARB diet. She expertly and simply explains to her patients and our listeners here, the mechanism by which Insulin is causing more inflammation and damage, and how to She admits she is a unicorn in her field but is hopeful the paradigm will soon shift. For those of you lucky enough to have found her here, check out her website and consider making a dramatic health and life change you won't regret. Shout out of the week! We are lucky to be joined by the "Carb Addiction Doc,” Dr. Robert Cywes. Dr. Cywes works in the trenches and has a wealth of knowledge to share about preventing and managing diabetes. This episode touches on the challenges of balancing conventional and natural approaches to diabetes treatment. Plus, Dr. Cywes discusses the various ways to minimize your chances of developing diabetes and the importance of changing one's mindset to improve health outcomes. This episode is packed with valuable information for anyone looking to prevent diabetes, manage diabetes, and tackle diabetes risk factors.Diabetes: A Growing Problem, a Growing Need for SolutionsMedication is a tool that can be used to treat a variety of medical conditions, including diabetes. However, it is essential to understand that medication alone cannot fix the root cause of the problem. In the case of diabetes, high blood sugar is just the tip of the iceberg. There is much more to be addressed to truly help those with diabetes.Dr. Cywes emphasizes the importance of addressing behavior and treating the cause of the disease. Medication can be used as an accelerant to treatment, but it should not be relied on as the sole solution. Instead, medication should be used in conjunction with lifestyle changes and addressing the root cause of the problem. This can ultimately lead to remission of the disease and the ability to deprescribe medication.CGMs: A Game-Changer for Diabetes CareOne crucial tool for managing diabetes is the continuous glucose monitor (CGM). CGMs provide real-time information about blood sugar levels, which is essential for effective diabetes management. Blood sugar levels should not be a flat line. Instead, blood sugar levels should fluctuate within an appropriate range for each individual. CGMs can help patients understand their blood sugar fluctuations and adjust their diet and medication as needed.Sugar Trap: How to Avoid Insulin Resistance and DiabetesDr. Cywes highlights the adverse effects of excess sugar consumption on insulin resistance. The body has a delicate balance between glucagon and insulin, which work together to stabilize blood sugar levels. However, when excess carbohydrates or protein are consumed, the body prioritizes the storage of these nutrients, leading to insulin dominance instead of glucagon dominance. This can lead to insulin resistance, where the body blocks the insulin receptors to protect cells from the damaging effects of excess sugar.Key Takeaways:[02:31] Treating diabetes beyond blood sugar[07:06] Blood sugar and glucagon[11:53] Insulin and glucagon dominance[17:36] Insulin resistance causes and theories[21:26] Carbohydrates and fat consumption[25:09] Medication for insulin resistance[32:25] Insulin management in diabetes[36:19] Insulin testing and dysregulation[40:11] Glucagon's importance in health[43:04] Satiety hormones and pathways[57:10] Insulin suppression in carnivores[01:03:06] Personalized medicineResources:JSAPA: https://obesityunderstood.comYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCk4Mk7vArjSYBa1VKv9-chAInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/carbaddictiondoc/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/carbaddictiondoc/TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@carbaddictioSupport the show

Diabetes has taken a foothold in recent years. As a matter of fact, I have seen an exponential increase in this condition in my practice as a cardiologist. The situation is problematic not only for the people who have diabetes but also for their loved ones and the nation as a whole. In order to speak about this severe issue, I have invited Dr. John Poothullil to the podcast.Dr. John Poothullil is a compelling guest. He's known across the country as the doctor speaking about diabetes, surviving cancer, and how chewing can be a revolutionary strategy to reduce insulin resistance. Furthermore, Dr. Poothullil has groundbreaking viewpoints on some “true and trusted” concepts in traditional medicine. These are some of the topics we cover during the episode: - Thoughts on diabetes and insulin resistance- Proper diet for reversing diabetes- Chewing as a powerful mechanism of the brain- Multiplication of cells and its relationship to cancer- Strategies for people diagnosed with cancer Undoubtedly, Dr. Poothullil has an incredible breadth and depth of knowledge. Dr David Unwin is on the podcast with Sakina today. Many of you will recognise him as the GP from the Norwood Surgery in Southport, who is a strong advocate of lifestyle medicine and a low carb diet. To date 110 of his patients have achieved drug free remission of their T2 Diabetes. He is the RCGP National Champion for Collaborative Care and Support Planning in Obesity and Diabetes and a RCGP Clinical Expert in Diabetes. His work on diabetes has been published in multiple journals and it is pretty impressive. But Dr Unwin's work is unconventional and doesn't come without criticism from many academics who fear that a low carb strategy is not an appropriate diet longterm. What I like about Unwins approach is the simplicity of it and how achievable it has proven to be for many of his patients. I also believe he genuinely cares about this huge problem. What I feel this conversation lacks is a deep dive into mechanisms behind low carb diets, the applicability of it to the wider population, the pitfalls and where people can slip up. For example I know many patients who start a low carb approach on a Monday and fall back to high sugar consumption later in the week which is a dangerous combination of high fat, high sugar and is essentially a standard American diet. We'll have to get Dr Unwin back on the pod at some point in the future but for now I'm sure you'll enjoy listening to him talk about how he started getting interested in nutritional interventions and how we could start using them today.
On today's podcast, Paul talks about how diabetes is diagnosed, how it's treated by mainstream medicine, what he believes it is caused by, and how you can reverse your diabetes or pre-diabetes without medication. A note from Paul: Throughout my training and practice as a physician I have come to one very disappointing conclusion: Western medicine isn't helping people lead better lives. Now that I've realized this, I've become obsessed with understanding what makes us healthy or ill. I want to live the best life I can and I want to be able to share this knowledge with others so that they can do the same. This podcast is the result of my relentless search to understand the roots of chronic disease. If you want to know how to live the most radical life possible I hope you'll join me on this journey.
