He was a board-certified internist, author of 13 national best-selling books and co-founder of the McDougall Program who dedicated over 50 years of his life caring for people with diet and lifestyle medicine.             Steven M. Wise Steven M. Wise was President of the Nonhuman Rights Project, Inc. He held a J.D. from Boston University Law School and a B.S. in Chemistry from the College of William and Mary. He practiced animal protection law for 30 years throughout the United States and was admitted to the Massachusetts Bar. Steve taught “Animal Rights Jurisprudence” at the Vermont, Lewis and Clark, University of Miami, and St. Thomas Law Schools, and taught “Animal Rights Law” at the Harvard Law School and John Marshall Law School. This episode originally aired July 7, 2022. We reshare it today as a tribute to his work and legacy.Dr. John McDougall was drawn to medicine because of his own health “fate.” At 18, he suffered a massive stroke and was an anomaly to the doctors in Michigan who wanted to explore “why” and “how” this could happen to someone so young. This health scare inspired his own journey to become a doctor, which eventually led McDougall and his wife, Mary, to Hawaii to practice medicine on a sugar plantation in Hawaii and service over 5,000 residents. What he saw there changed the course of his medical practice forever.The healthiest people on the island, the first-generation elders who had come from China, Japan, Korea, and the Philippines, were the healthiest and most vibrant people…still active, with no medications, and still in bodies fit for movement. It was their children and grandchildren, however, those second and third generations, that were struggling. Why? They had adopted a western diet of meat, dairy, and processed foods. The secret, Dr. McDougall discovered, was STARCH. Those healthy islanders subsisted on a diet comprised mostly of rice, potatoes, vegetables, and fruits and THAT inspired the work he does today through his McDougall programs and education.Beyond diet, the McDougalls are also dedicated to informing citizens about the positive effects of dietary therapy on chronic disease and our Planet. At the age of 47, our guest today, marathoner, author, and world record holder Dr. Ruth Heidrich, received the terrifying news that she had stage 4 breast cancer. After answering an ad to participate in a cancer and diet research study conducted by Dr. John McDougall, she immediately chose to adopt a whole food plant-based diet and forgo chemotherapy and radiation. Two years later, she was in remission and became the first vegan to complete the Ironman Triathlon.    Dr. Heidrich has since been named one of the ten fittest women in North America, and you might recognize her from her appearance in Forks Over Knives. He pulled out a file drawer and he said, ‘You're welcome to spend as much time as you want looking at the research that I based this on.' And he spent a full two hours with me. You know, when was the doctor ever going to do that? I'm a retired high school English teacher, vegan enthusiast, and blogger. I started my vegan lifestyle in 1995 but faltered with the criticism of doctors and friends, maintaining a vegetarian diet until 2009. My husband, Paul, and I changed our lifestyle 13 years ago after watching Food Inc., which launched our new lives together and our plan to live a long, happy, disease-free life. What we eat and how we live determines our health and future. Diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis at 14, my mother struggled throughout her childhood and adulthood. Although told not cautioned about bearing children, my mom ignored her doctor's warnings and had my sister and me. Despite being ill for most of my childhood, she desperately tried to fight to regain her life. My father traveled often for his job. However, my grandmother raised my sister and me because of my mother's illness. When I turned 10, my mother suffered paralysis on one side of her body and lost sight. Now bedridden and unable to care for herself or my sister and me, my grandmother moved into our house to help. We feared she would die, and although I hate to admit it, I avoided visiting my mother's bedroom. Throughout her battle with MS, my mom also learned about her hypoglycemia. Simultaneously, a friend of my mother's introduced her to Dr. John McDougall, a physician who believed in food as medicine. In a last-ditch effort to regain her life, my mother started the McDougall program, adopting an oil-free, plant-based diet. As a former smoker and social drinker, my mother adapted to a new lifestyle. Her health improved, and she regained her sight and ability to walk. I watched my mother, once paralyzed and blind, earn a bachelor's and master's Degree from Wayne State University and pursue a successful career as a social worker at Children's Hospital in Detroit, Michigan. Dr. Miriam Maisel, a pioneer in plant-based nutrition and lifestyle medicine, is this week's featured expert on the Health Science Podcast with host Dr. Frank Sabatino. Dr. Maisel shared her personal journey and professional experiences, as well as her work in stress management and palliative medicine.   Growing up, Dr. Maisel was inspired to become a vegetarian, driven by her love for yoga and environmental concerns. While in medical school, she had to hide her vegetarianism due to stigma.   Her exposure to the internet led her to explore medical fasting and plant-based nutrition. As a result, Dr. Maisel visited True North Health in California and began reading works by renowned experts like Colin Campbell, John McDougall, and Dean Ornish.   During her younger years, Dr. Maisel lived in a community in Israel that was among the first to practice organic farming.   She also became interested in meditation and Tai Chi, which eventually led her to Japan for three years. Her experience there inspired her to return to conventional medicine, seeking an evidence-based approach.   In Israel, she has observed a strong focus on tertiary care and hospital medicine. While there is some emphasis on prevention, diet is often overlooked. However, she emphasizes that there is a growing interest in plant-based nutrition and lifestyle medicine.   Throughout her career, Dr. Maisel has been drawn to palliative and hospice medicine, working in various hospice departments in the UK.   In recent years, she has also focused on stress management, earning a qualification from the Benson Henry Institute at Harvard. The program, called Smart Stress Management and Resiliency Training (SMART), teaches individuals to recognize and manage stress.   Dr. Maisel believes that teaching stress management to doctors can help them better understand their patients and provide more effective care. She has taught several groups of doctors in the UK, offering continuing education credits for her course.   In her practice, Dr. Maisel takes a compassionate approach, offering extended consultations and making her services accessible to those with limited resources. Dr. McDougall was on the podcast on Episode 151, and we took a look at his storied life and career as a pioneering physician and talked about his discoveries that informed his unwavering practice of a starch-based diet. Dr. John McDougall was drawn to medicine because of his own health “fate.” At 18, he suffered a massive stroke and was an anomaly to the doctors in Michigan who wanted to explore “why” and “how” this could happen to someone so young. This health scare inspired his own journey to become a doctor, which eventually led McDougall and his wife, Mary, to Hawaii to practice medicine on a sugar plantation in Hawaii and service over 5,000 residents. What he saw there changed the course of his medical practice forever. The healthiest people on the island, the first-generation elders who had come from China, Japan, Korea, and the Philippines, were the healthiest and most vibrant people…still active, with no medications, and still in bodies fit for movement. It was their children and grandchildren, however, those second and third generations, that were struggling. Why? They had adopted a western diet of meat, dairy, and processed foods.  The secret, Dr. McDougall discovered, was STARCH. Those healthy islanders subsisted on a diet comprised mostly of rice, potatoes, vegetables, and fruits and THAT inspired the work he does today through his McDougall programs and education. Beyond diet, the McDougalls are also dedicated to informing citizens about the positive effects of dietary therapy on chronic disease and our Planet.
