His resilience, reminiscent of an indomitable tree, stemmed from a conviction – a conviction to decode the mysterious symbols of this state-of-the-art technology. Space Technologies This is another episode in the series I'm doing with Monash Tech School focusing on the Victorian Priority Sectors, and one of the sectors is Space Technologies. When we think of space we often go straight to thinking about space travel, but there are a whole range of careers in this area including advanced manufacturing, robotics, artificial intelligence, computer science and cybersecurity, and Thales (where my guest, Mohit, works) is one of the major global companies working in the space technologies industry. Mohit shares in this episode what it's like to work at Thales, and if you're interested in pursuing a career in this industry I suggest you take a look at their website (link below). Choice in VCE Mohit moved to Melbourne from Dubai during Year 10, and so when he was choosing his VCE subjects, he was surprised at the range of choice he had in terms of which subjects he could choose. He had earlier worked in different education systems where his teachers would have chosen his pathway for him based on his ability in maths and science in particular, so he loved the fact that in Year 10 he could try different subjects like Legal Studies and decide whether or not he wanted to pursue that path for himself. Studying and Working in Cyber Security Initially, Mohit started a Bachelor of Marine and Offshore Engineering in Tasmania, but he moved back to Melbourne when he didn't really enjoy it, he moved back to Melbourne and started investigating other courses. At a Deakin information session, he found out that if he studied Cyber Security he could learn how to hack ethically, and as he'd recently been a victim of  a phishing scam, this really interested him. Mohit completed the Bachelor of Cyber Security at Deakin University with a major in Computer Forensics and Counterterrorism. But, taking the government's word for what they found during the search of your devices is a very bad idea!   Helping us get Set For Sentencing is computer forensics expert, Tami Loehrs.  She brings more than 30 years of legal and computer experience, as well as hundreds of hours of computer forensics training to the table.  Ms. Loehrs gives us the straight scoop on how to defend crimes involving computers, particularly at sentencing.   Her message is simple -- when it comes to computer forensics, question everything! WARNING: This episode is not for the faint of heart.  Computer forensics issues most often arise in the context of offenses involving child sexual exploitation, either through the downloading and sharing of offensive images, or improper contact with minors online.  These are horrible crimes, and we talk in detail about the facts of specific cases.   IN THIS EPISODE: The importance of using forensics to put the underlying offense in context at sentencing; Just because something is deleted doesn't mean it's deleted; How law enforcement routinely attempts to thwart comprehensive forensics evaluations by the defense; Just because it's on your computer doesn't mean you're guilty; The need to examine devices the government ignored; Controlling the "re-victimization" narrative in CP sentencings; Do the feds have the digital tools to eradicate CP?  If so, why don't they? LINKS: Visit, loehrsforensics.com for more information.  For articles and other information written by Ms. Loehrs, visit the MEDIA PAGE on her website. Here's an earlier episdode we did after the Supreme Court confirmation hearing of Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson, where the CP guidelines were front and center.  It will give deeper context to the conversation with Ms. Loehrs:   Senators Sell Sentencing Snake Oil @ KBJ Confirmation Hearing. Another related episode is #5, Understanding Autism at Sentencing.  Many of the cases involving clients on the Autism Spectrum are online offenses and therefore likely require forensics.  Lastly, if you would like to see the redacted exceprts from the sentencing video played during the podcast, please visit our YOUTUBE Channel for the video version of the podcast.  While you are there, please hit the SUBSCRIBE button!

Law firms are sweet targets for hackers given the rich data they store, from intellectual property to confidential merger details to personal and health information and more.  The last decade is littered with headlines about data hacks and ransomware attacks at even the most sophisticated global law firms. Yet, according to the 2020 Legal Technology Survey Report conducted by the American Bar Association's Legal Technology Resource Center (LTRC) fewer than half of the firms polled employ some of the most basic security measures, such as email and file encryption.  What can smaller firms do to protect their data and that of their clients? Joining me to discuss this important issue is Ondrej Krehel, CEO & Founder of LIFARS, a New York City based incident response and digital forensics firm specializing in solutions to optimize an organization's cybersecurity protections. Ondrej is recognized for his digital forensic expertise and ethical hacking skills He participates in high-profile engagements around the world using his proprietary methodology to achieve the most rapid root-cause analysis and remediation. SHOW TITLE: Meet Iris, the FBI's Only Electronic-sniffing Dog: An Interview with Jeffrey Calandra BLURB: Criminals and terrorists often hide data on electronic devices and then hide these devices. And they re often very clever about doing so. In such search situations, many subjects hide flash drives, hard drives, and other electronic components so if the police come, the instruments of their crimes may not be found. Take the example of a child ography case where a subject will put pictures of innocent children on a thumb drive and hide it in the yard, behind walls, and all sorts of other places. In a normal search, a human investigator may not find the media. What's the FBI to do? Enter Iris, a young, eager, lab who is the FBI's only canine capable of sniffing out these devices. And she's one of only five in the world. How does she do it? How was she trained for such specialized work? In this episode we talk with Jeffrey Chandra and he can tell us how all this accomplished, as well as how dogs are used in other criminal detection activities. BIO: Jeffrey Calandra possesses a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science and a Masters in Criminal Justice with concentration in Computer Forensics. He spent 6-1/2 years as a special agent working child ography, criminal computer intrusions, fraud, and bomb threat cases. HE has also assisted on Counter Intelligence, Counter-Terrorism, Drug, and Gang cases and has served as a member of the Hostage Negotiator team. He is currently a K9 handler for the FBI Electronic Scent Detection K9 Iris. Iris, a 20 month-old black lab, is the first of her type in the FBI and one of 5 in the world. She will be the future of law enforcement. Already we are getting requests from across the country for her assistance. For a little background, Iris was trained as a seeing eye dog for a year and then was selected to be a law enforcement dog.
