“Men are afraid to be masculine, they're shying away from their strengths, they're apologizing all the time for just being what they are inherently, they're not able to hold down healthy relationships anymore, they don't know how to interact with women anymore, they don't know how to be self confident anymore. We're destroying an entire gender for the sake of being politically correct.” Over the last several generations, the image of men and masculinity has been distorted to the point that, as our guest Ilan put it, “we now have a baseline vilification of masculinity across the board”. This conversation goes deep into history, politics and current events to clarify the true situation. Everything we do today to restore the true image of men and masculinity is an investment in future generations. Full Text of ReadingsWednesday of the Fifth Week of Lent Lectionary: 253All podcast readings are produced by the USCCB and are from the Catholic Lectionary, based on the New American Bible and approved for use in the United States _______________________________________The Saint of the day is St. Catherine of SwedenSt. Catherine was born near the beginning of the fourteenth century to parents Ulfo and St. Bridget of Sweden. At the age of seven, Catherine was sent to the Abbey at Risburgh by her parents and placed under the care of the abbess to receive an education and to build a foundation for her spiritual life.At the age of 13, Catherine was taken from the abbey and given in marriage to Egard, a German nobleman. Upon meeting Egard, Catherine persuaded him to make a mutual vow of perpetual chastity with her. Catherine and Egard dedicated themselves to the service of God and encouraged each other in works of mortification, prayer and charity.Around the year 1349, after the death of her father, Catherine accompanied her mother on a pilgrimage to Rome to visit the relics of the Roman Martyrs. The two spent several years living in Rome. In 1373 St. Bridget died and Catherine returned to Sweden with her mother's body. Two years later, Catherine returned to Rome to promote the cause for her mother's canonization and to gain approval for a Rule she had written for a group of religious women.After gaining approval for her rule, Catherine returned to Sweden and became abbess of Vadzstena. Catherine served as abbess of Vadzstena until her death in 1381. During the final 25 years of her life, Catherine was known for her austere lifestyle and her practice of making daily use of the Sacrament of Confession. Catalina, quien había vivido en un hogar de profundas convicciones religiosas, acordó vivir con su marido en castidad, la misma noche de bodas. Cuando su madre abandonó Suecia para presentar en Roma las reglas de su nueva orden (del Santísimo Salvador), pasó muy poco tiempo antes de que Catalina se le uniera. En 1351 recibió la noticia de la muerte de su marido y decidió permanecer al lado de su madre en Roma hasta la muerte de ésta, participando en las actividades de oración, ayuda a los necesitados y peregrinaciones dentro y fuera de Italia. A la muerte de Brígida el 23 de julio de 1373, Catalina se convirtió en su heredera espiritual y como tal la sucedió a la cabeza de la nueva orden. Acompañó los restos mortales de su madre hasta Suecia, para sepultarla en el convento de Vadstena. Ella misma ingresó como monja dentro del convento y se convirtió en la primera abadesa del mismo. En el verano de 1375 regresó a Roma para participar en las investigaciones sobre la canonización de Brígida. Permaneció en Italia hasta 1380, proveyendo información sobre la vida de su madre en Suecia, Italia y otros lugares, pero debido al cisma de Aviñón en la Iglesia su trabajo no llevó a ningún resultado. Sin embargo, consiguió la ratificación en la aprobación de las reglas de la orden brigidina, alrededor de 1378. Back in August of last year we dropped an episode on male friendships. We covered how trash we can be as friends sometimes and even brought in research that suggests men struggle at maintaining fulfilling friendships. We also talked about what men can do to establish deeper connections with each other. So today we revisit the subject but dive a bit deeper on the subject and cover not only male friendships, but the rise of Men's Groups popping up around the country. However when it comes to Men's Groups there's the good, the bad, the beautiful and the ugly.  So we talk about Men's Groups today because believe in the importance of all male safe spaces.  We also announce the launch of our own Men's Group on Facebook: Let's Talk Bruh Facebook Group And sorry ladies, the Facebook Group will be an all male space. Many of us at times depend on women for our emotional outlets so we want to be better at creating spaces for us to heal with each other.
