For our second episode in the "Corman Graduates: Jack Hill" series, we talk with director, writer and cinematography, Elle Schneider (THE FOOD THAT BUILT AMERICA, PLEDGE NIGHT: AN INTERVIEW WITH ROGER CORMAN, BLISS BLUE, THAT GUY DICK MILLER), about Jack Hill's MONDO KEYHOLE and PIT STOP. In addition to being friends with Dick Miller and interviewing Jack Hill and Roger Corman on multiple occasions, she is a huge fan of PIT STOP. She brings an technical perspective on both of the films that you won't find anywhere else. First, we talk about MONDO KEYHOLE. We discuss the history and legal challenges with making "Nudie Cuties" and "Roughies" films during the 1960s and how that impacted the distribution of MONDO KEYHOLE. We talk about how Jack Hill got involved with movie, the unique approach he took to casting and filming the movie and the fact that it had to play in adult theaters upon it's initial release. Next, we dive into fan favorite, PIT STOP - one of Jack Hill's most impressive films. We talk about the struggle the movie faced trying to get an audience in an era when black and white films were going out of vogue in the drive-in circuit. We share mutual appreciation for Sid Haig's emotional performance - one that is unique to his filmography. Finally, we discuss the filming approach by cinematographer, Austin McKinney and the unfortunate rift with Jack Hill. We even talk a tiny bit about Sorceress. Elle shares stories about Roger Corman including his ambitions to be a studio director and the decision to step away to start New World Pictures. We also spend a little time talking about serial killers, the fallout between Jack Hill and Austin McKinney, and movies with the best scenes featuring Dune Buggies. Why Dune Buggies? Because Dune Buggies are awesome. We want to generously thank Elle for being on the podcast and sharing her perspectives on these films. You can check out her website at http://elleschneider.com and look for her next documentary about educational films. Maybe she'll cover For Safety's Sake: In the Neighborhood? Probably not. Another episode, another low-budget Corman special shot in Southern California. It's 1997's (or 1999's? Unclear) Born Bad! After a daring daylight convenience store heist where the born bad kids steal eight beers and $3.28 worth of snacks, Evan (Patrick Renna) targets the born bad kids for their biggest score yet: the local savings and loan! His step-dad is the president of the bank, who tries to impress his new son by flashing around bank blueprints and safe codes during dinner. They use this insider knowledge to... sneak into the bank at night? No. They just bust in with Point Break masks and rob the joint in the middle of the day. But the blueprints give them an important edge: they know the safe is the big metal room in the back. The crew includes leader/hothead Craig (Ryan Francis), even bigger hothead Bullet (Michael D. Weatherred), burnout moron Marco (Corey Feldman), girl Laura (Heidi Lenhart), and normal guy Brian (Justin Walker). Brian was recently accepted to Bard, and his parents are unable and unwilling to fund his college aspirations, so Brian agrees to the robbery to fulfill his eastcoast rural liberal arts college dreams. As you can probably guess, these petty criminal morons mess everything up. Sheriff Larabee (James Remar) clocks the robbery immediately and singlehandedly causes a hostage situation by calling the teens while they're still inside the bank. Everyone except Brian goes insane after two hours trapped inside the bank. Will they live to tell the tale? Is the sheriff ever going to get them that helicopter? Can Corman find a way to include some sexual assault into this picture? You'll have to listen to find out!
Roger Corman (April 5, 1926 -May 9, 2024)—an iconic figure whose influence on Hollywood is nothing short of legendary—traversed the cinematic landscape from the late 1950's to the 1990's. Celebrated as the "Pope of Pop Cinema," the "Spiritual Godfather of the New Hollywood," and the "King of Cult," Corman was a pioneering force in independent filmmaking, forever reshaping the industry with his innovative spirit. Throughout his illustrious career, Corman collaborated with an impressive roster of emerging filmmakers, many of whom would go on to dominate the industry. Names such as Francis Ford Coppola, Martin Scorsese, Ron Howard, James Cameron, and Jonathan Demme began their journeys under his mentorship. It has often been remarked that Corman's guidance served as a vital training ground—what James Cameron famously referred to as the "Roger Corman Film School." His influence extended beyond mentorship; he was a catalyst for creativity and innovation. Nicolas Roeg served as the cinematographer for The Masque of the Red Death, while many of his protégés achieved Oscar success. Corman's reputation for fostering talent with a blend of encouragement and challenge left an indelible mark on cinema. As he famously advised, “If you do a good job on this film, you'll never have to work for me again,” exemplifying his role as both mentor and pioneer in the cinematic world. Join Azed and Tom as they explore the life and work of Roger Corman, a true maverick and inspiration for all aspiring filmmakers.
Welcome to another Cinema Sounds & Secrets Tribute episode! This week Janet, John, (and Pen) discuss the life and career of an incredible American film director, producer, and actor. Once called “The Pope of Pop Cinema” and “The King of Cult” this massive talent also assisted in jumpstarting many careers of the actors and directors we know and love… It's Roger Corman! While he was an innovator and pioneer in the world of independent film, Corman actually studied engineering at Stanford before discovering his passion for movies. Many of his films would go on to achieve cult following status including A Bucket of Blood (1959), The Little Shop of Horrors (1960), The Intruder (1962), X: The Man with the X-ray Eyes (1963), The Wild Angels (1966), and The Trip (1967). We're unveiling a new series on the podcast: Corman Graduates, where we chronologically discuss the filmography of a director who went through "the Roger Corman school of filmmaking" and we're starting with Jack Hill, director of films like TEH BIG DOLL HOUSE and COFFY. Joining us for this first episode is writer, film historian, and filmmaker Calum Waddell, who literally wrote the book on Jack Hill with 2009's Jack Hill: The Exploitation and Blaxploitation Master, Film By Film. We start at the very beginning of Hill's career with "The Host," his student film at UCLA, and his entry into the world of Roger Corman with his work on 1962's THE WASP WOMAN and 1963's THE TERROR before getting his first feature-length assignment, 1966's BLOOD BATH aka TRACK OF THE VAMPIRE, which saw Hill try to create a film around footage from a film shot in Yugoslavia that Corman had invested in. Corman eventually hands it to Stephanie Rothman, another Corman graduate, who took Hill's film about an obsessed artist who murders his models into a vampire film (at Corman's request, of course). Did we like the film? We discuss! We then talk about what Jack Hill felt was his true directorial debut, 1967's SPIDER BABY, which Hill did away from Corman and took some time before it reached theaters and then was mostly forgotten until Quentin Tarantino stepped in the 1990s when he re-released Hill's 1975 film SWITCHBLADE SISTERS on his now-defunct Rolling Thunder Pictures label. We'll discuss the incredible performances - including Sid Haig and Lon Chaney Jr. - and why the film was so prophetic to the horror films that followed it. Don't miss this look into the beginnings of Jack Hill's career with the keen insight and first-hand knowledge of another exploitation expert, Calum Waddell. Per quale motivo io e te non abbiamo creato aziende unicorno?Ho visto nascere internet e diventare onnipresente nelle nostre vite.Ora sto assistendo all'arrivo dell'Intelligenza Artificiale. The Penn State child sex abuse scandal concerned allegations and subsequent convictions of child sexual abuse committed by Jerry Sandusky, an assistant coach for the Penn State Nittany Lions football team, over a period of at least fifteen years. The scandal began to emerge publicly in March 2011 and broke in early November 2011 when Sandusky was indicted on 52 counts of child molestation, stemming from incidents that occurred between 1994 and 2009.[1] Sandusky was ultimately convicted on 45 counts of child sexual abuse on June 22, 2012,[2] and was sentenced to a minimum of 30 years and a maximum of 60 years in prison.[3]Additionally, three Penn State officials – school president Graham Spanier, vice president Gary Schultz and athletic director Tim Curley – were charged with perjury, obstruction of justice, failure to report suspected child abuse, and related charges.[4] The Penn State Board of Trustees commissioned an independent investigation by former FBI Director Louis Freeh, whose report stated that Penn State's longtime head football coach Joe Paterno, along with Spanier, Curley and Schultz, had known about allegations of child abuse by Sandusky as early as 1998, had shown "total and consistent disregard...for the safety and welfare of Sandusky's child victims", and "empowered" Sandusky to continue his acts of abuse by failing to disclose them.[5]: 14 [6][7] Shortly after the scandal broke, Spanier resigned. The Board of Trustees terminated the contracts of Paterno and Curley. As a result of the scandal, the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) imposed sanctions on the Penn State football program: a $60 million fine, a four-year postseason ban, scholarship reductions, and a vacation of all victories from 1998 to 2011.[8] These sanctions were considered to be among the most severe ever imposed on an NCAA member school. NCAA President Mark Emmert stated that the sanctions were levied "not to be just punitive, but to make sure the university establishes an athletic culture and daily mindset in which football will never again be placed ahead of educating, nurturing and protecting young people."[9][10] The Big Ten Conference subsequently imposed an additional $13 million fine.[11]The Paterno family retained former Attorney General Richard Thornburgh to conduct a review of the Freeh report, which concluded that the report constituted a "rush to injustice" that could not be relied upon[12][13] and that Freeh's evidence fell "far short" of showing that Joe Paterno attempted to conceal the scandal, but rather that "the contrary is true".[13] In January 2013, state senator Jake Corman and state treasurer Rob McCord sued the NCAA, seeking to overturn the Penn State sanctions on the basis that Freeh had been actively collaborating with the organization and that due process had not been followed. In November 2014, Corman released emails showing "regular and substantive" contact between Freeh's investigators and the NCAA, suggesting that Freeh's conclusions were orchestrated.[14] As part of a settlement, the NCAA restored the 111 wins to Paterno's record on January 16, 2015.[15][10]Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-opperman-report--1198501/support.
We close out #PrisonMarch 2: Second Offense with an interview with someone who there at New World from the very beginning: editor Barbara Pokras! After graduating from USC (where she went to school with Dan O'Bannon with whom she would work on RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD), Barbara found her way to Roger Corman's newly-formed New World Pictures, where she went to work dubbing voices and assisting director Stephanie Rothman on New World's first ever movie, THE STUDENT NURSES. From there, Barbara worked on a variety of movies Roger shot in the Phillipines, like NIGHT OF THE COBRA WOMAN, THE HOT BOX, and THE BIG BUST-OUT! We discuss what it was like to work on those movies, how Barbara worked her way up to joining the Editor's Union and landing a job at Cop Rock, the short-lived police procedural musical, and why it was her favorite job. We also discuss I ESCAPED FROM DEVIL'S ISLAND, TOO HOT TO HANDLE, and why Wonder Woman was not her favorite project to work on. We could not have been more thrilled to talk with Barbara Pokras, one of Corman's original film school graduates, and we know you'll love our discussion as much as we did! And when you're done, don't forget to pick up her book, Feeding Mrs. Moskowitz, here. In 1958, the Corman brothers, containing Gene and younger brother Roger, came together, along with director Bernard Kowalski, to bring two monster movies to life. In '58 it was NIGHT OF THE BLOOD BEAST. In '59 it was ATTACK OF THE GIANT LEECHES, a story of some giant leeches that are consuming human that enter their swamp. With little to no money, limited time and monsters made of trash bags and tape, is it one that stands as a Corman so bad it's good film? Or a leave it out in the swamp film? The one and only Edwin Cesar Gomez of @physicalmediasociety returns to the Secret Movie Club podcast fold to discuss American cinema producing legend Roger Corman. When SMC did its first Corman tribute a few months back, Edwin said "Hey! I shoulda been on that pod!" And he was right. Very few folks have seen as many Corman pictures as the ECG. Today, Edwin and SMC founder.programmer Craig Hammill, discuss three more movies that give a fuller picture of how influential Corman was to late 20th century cinema: the 1967 Roger Corman directed LSD movie THE TRIP, the 1976 Roger Corman New World Pictures released HOLLYWOOD BOULEVARD, and the 1979 Roger Corman produced SAINT JACK.
That's right, #PrisonMarch is back for Prison Marc H 2: Second Offense! Once more, we plumb the depths of the women-in-prison movies released by New World Pictures, this time with an Italian knock-off created after New World's THE BIG DOLL HOUSE became a huge success! Yes, plenty of studios were making knock-offs by 1973, but only Roger Corman would popularize a subgenre and then also release a knock-off of the very thing he popularized! Returning to discuss this Italian version of a Corman movie with us is Chris Iannacone from the Get Me Another podcast, who previously joined us for the Italian-produced LADY FRANKENSTEIN. Lucky for us, Chris has been preparing for this episode FOR YEARS! We will discuss this wild tale in our usual NWPP manner: by piecing together the story from the reassembled footage Roger had put together for its American release. Did Sister Maria do a good job rehabilitating the girls? How important is it to know someone with a circular indoor pool? How cool is Jeff? And what's the biggest thing you've ever slept through? We dive into it ALL! Join us and become one our NWPPVIPs, the only listeners we will bury. So claimed the 1980 book The Golden Turkey Awards by Michael and Harry Medved regarding the film Plan 9 from Outer Space and director Edward Wood Jr AKA Ed Wood. But this very title is one of the reasons behind the revival of the film and of Ed Wood. The film has issues with continuity, set design, dialogue and a coherent ‘Plan 9' but something about the film appeals to a subset of film lovers. Perhaps it's the flashes of style, the joy in its failings or perhaps it's a recognition of something beyond the traditional and often formulaic nature of mainstream narrative filmmaking. Today I speak with two wonderful film academics and fans of the film. The Experts Mark Bould is a professor of Film and Literature at the University of West England, Bristol. He has written/edited extensively about science fiction cinema. Do you know how much reggae is played in San Diego? Marc and Ryan do, and Erica sort of does, which makes the NWPP the perfect podcast to discuss Jamaica's first film, 1972's THE HARDER THEY COME, as we continue #FFFebruary (Foreign Film February)! A foreign film where the only language used is English? You bet! But, if you think you won't need subtitles, you'd be wrong (or from Jamaica)! Jimmy Cliff stars in this musical crime film as Ivanhoe Martin, based on a real figure from Jamaican history, who moves from the country to the city of Kingston to make his fortune and dabbles in both music and danger! From fixing up bikes to recording new club hits to taking down cops, director Perry Henzell's debut film not only introduced the Jamaican film industry to the world, but its soundtrack is often hailed as what brought reggae music to the United States, including several tracks from Jimmy Cliff himself! Picked up for distribution by Roger Corman's New World Pictures, the film has enjoyed cult status for many years. We examine Henzell's feelings about New World and Corman's thoughts on the film. We also discuss the trouble with autocorrect, the popularity of barbershop quartets, the proper temperature for a recording studio, when moms don't want you to follow them to the city, and the brand new beverage that is sweeping the country! Really, there's two and they both sound delicious! Don't miss this trip into another under-discussed gem from the New World Pictures vaults! I had so much fun welcoming back Kendra Corman back to the show. An accomplished marketing strategist whose insights are as practical as they are powerful. Kendra's worked with everyone from small businesses to global brands like Jeep, bringing her marketing expertise to a range of clients. Today, we dug into the ever-evolving world of AI and how it can be a real game-changer for social media and email marketing. Now, if you know me, you know my relationship with AI is complicated. I love the possibilities, but I'm a bit wary of giving up too much control, especially when it comes to my voice. But Kendra shared some great tips and tricks to get the best of both worlds—leveraging AI to streamline content creation while keeping it uniquely “you.” Training AI in Your Voice: Start by “teaching” AI how you sound. Share real content, like podcast transcripts to help AI learn your unique tone. The result? Content that's in your voice, whether you're crafting a LinkedIn post, a Facebook update, or an email newsletter. Setting Boundaries with Words: Create a “do not use” list for words or phrases that feel off-brand. In fact, she shares my distaste for terms like “maximize” and “utilize,” which can make marketing feel pretentious. Providing AI with these specifics helps produce content that stays true to your brand's personality. Tailoring Content for Each Platform: Just as you would guide a new employee, give AI instructions to adjust tone and style depending on the platform. That way, each post feels like it fits naturally in its environment—LinkedIn reads more professional, while Facebook is a bit more casual. Refining AI Prompts Over Time: One word can dramatically alter AI's output. For example, the term “conversational” yields a friendlier tone than “informal,” which sometimes comes across as overly relaxed. As you work with AI, make notes of these little discoveries, as they'll save time and improve content quality down the road. Final Editing is Essential: AI can be a great partner for draft creation, but it's not quite ready to go live on its own. Adding that last layer of polish ensures your content sounds natural and true to your voice. If this conversation has peaked your interest be sure to check out Kendra's book, Mastering AI in Marketing Communications, which goes even deeper, offering practical prompting tips for anyone looking to harness AI effectively without losing that human touch. What did you think of the episode? I would love to hear from you. Please take a quick minute to complete the listener survey I can create shows that that keep you coming back, with a few laughs and a lot of practical tips along the way. https://lp.constantcontactpages.com/sv/AWHOIJ0/MTFW 6486580f5a1b70cda54e7df5fb3f5f3eeff4317e

I am an email marketing fan so I was excited to invite Kendra Corman to join me for a conversation on how to make email marketing effective. She started by explaining why email is so important. Sure it is great to build a community on social media, but what will you do if Facebook goes down or cuts off your profile. You are stuck. But if you have email addresses, you own those contacts and can take them wherever you want. You have the flexibility to contact them when you want and to share information they want and need to know.
